20 - Where is HAPPINESS?

20 - Where is HAPPINESS?

In this episode of Living Deeper Lives I ask a very simple question: Where is happiness?

The answer is far more elusive and complicated than we first imagined. Yet when we find it, it is far simpler than we imagined.

Happiness is something that seems to elude many although that is the one thing we are all searching for.

I'm your host Steven Webb and I help people with active minds and busy lives enjoy inner peace.

Transcript

Where is happiness? Try to pinpoint where happiness is right now. I'll just give you a few seconds. It's quite a simple question to ponder upon. And it's something I've been thinking about recently. So, where is happiness? It's not so easy to locate, is it? It's not a place, it's not an object, it's not somewhere out there, it's not a place you need to get to. It's a feeling. So, what is happiness?

That sounds like the question on today's podcast. I'm Steven Webb and this is Living Deeper Lives and also Stillness in the Storms podcast. And this podcast is for you, if you have an active mind and you have a busy life, and you don't have time to sit and meditate for hours every day, but you still want a little inner peace.

Happiness, what is it? Where is it? How do we get it? We all want it as children, what do you want to be when you grow up? Well, I want to be this, I want to be that because we think it's going to make us happy. And as parents, whenever you ask a parent, what do you want your kid to be when they get older, they might say a doctor or something like that. But above all, they always come back and say, “I would like my child to be happy.” And I think that's what we want for our partner, our children, our parents, everybody, we want them to be happy.

But what is happy? What does it mean to be happy? If I asked you when you're happy, so why are you happy? You're very often might mention something on the outside world, “Well, I just got a job promotion or I just got a pay rise or I just passed an exam, got a new car, just start a new relationship” or something or just got out of a relationship perhaps, more than likely, you will mention something externally. You won't look up and say, “I just feel happy.”

And then if you say to other people, “What will make you happy right now? What will improve your circumstances right now?”

And, they'll say, “Well, if I had a bit more money, if I was a bit healthier, if I lost a bit of weight, if I gained a bit of weight, if I had a bit better tan.” Nowadays, it’s liposuction, lipo-fillers or either fake eyebrows or a few more likes on Facebook, etc.

And now it's like, I'm not interested in likes, I want the love. I don't want any of the other things, you know the likes, are no longer interesting. And this is really funny, and I talk about the happiness line. And if you imagine a piece of paper, draw a line right in the middle of the piece of paper and then if I say to you that line is your center line, that's the line when you feel normal. You're not excited, you're not in intimate moments, you're not cuddling anyone, you're not feeding any kind of excitement or enlightenment or spiritual bliss or any of those things. And below that line is everything, and you go to the doctors find out you are ill or cannot pay your debts or you're feeling lonely or you're feeling depressed or anything like that has blurred the line.

And depending on whether how far up or down on the scale above and below the line you go, you know, if you're going on holiday, you're quite high up above the line. If you're in bed and having an intimate moment, you're having sex with somebody, you're quite well up above the line. And then the moment you climax, you're like top of the paper, off the paper, off the scale. But then when you go to the doctor's and you suddenly get diagnosed with something that isn't that good, or you hear

In this episode I discussed why that happens, and why we feel very unsatisfied with our lives. Why we become everybody else, instead of that ambitious child that was going to stand out and make a difference.

One of the fundamental things about making changes is your ability to understand how you got to where you are. When you understand how you become this person you do not recognise, you then have the gift of what to do about it.

Your host Steven Webb, explains with a simple analogy of a glass and how we build up this ego of the person we are, and what we need to do about it.

Intro: Hello, and welcome to my podcast. I'm Steven Webb, and this is Stillness In the Storms of life. It's the podcast that will help you have a little inner peace when you have it least and you need it most.

On today's show, I'm going to help you to get the benefits of meditation, even if you're somebody that cannot shut off your mind. How does that sound? But today, first of all, let's I have a word from my sponsors. Okay, I haven't gotten those sponsors yet, but if you would like to sponsor the show if you would like me to give you a shoutout, head over to stevenspodcast.com and you can support me on Patreon and then I would give you a shout out on the show. If you're a business or you know a business or somebody that really wants to support and help the show grow so I can reach more people, help more people have a little more inner peace - I almost said have a little less inner peace -if you can support the show in any way like that, head over to stevenspodcast.com and you'll see a link to the Patreon site in which you...but not only that, you get videos. Like right now, I'm recording the video of this. And it's very much on the video, which makes it a lot better, a lot more entertaining.

Why did I start meditating?

On today's show, why did I start meditating? Let's start with that because it will make sense. Are you somebody that has got a really active mind and your mind goes completely blank when you don't need it to, at the worst times, like recording a podcast? On the other hand, does your mind have constant overthinking when you want it to go blank a little bit, like when you're trying to go sleep or when you try to focus on something or you're listening to a really important podcast or film, but you're tired and your mind is like, just, I can't listen anymore, my neuro synopsis is just saying enough? And then you get the idea that I'm going to sit down and meditate for like 10 minutes. And there you go, boom! Your mind goes into overactive mode straight away.

Well, I started meditating first in my late twenties, but it lasted about four minutes, I believe. I started meditating for the wrong reasons. I thought it would be cool and I thought it might even get me a girlfriend or get me laid - sorry to admit that one. You know, we were all young once, but then when I turned 40, I hit rock bottom and I found myself in a position where I could not sleep. I found myself single and the only thing my mind would do for a long, long time was to go over the questions I had for my ex.

I was mad. If I sat her down for just 30 seconds, it would go like, what are they doing now? What's happening? What are they up to? Why did they do that to you? How dare they do that. And it would go to the craziest times of thinking, which is completely irrelevant, but it gave me no peace whatsoever. And so, I started reading books a few weeks later because I couldn't sleep so I had to almost mask my voice, I had to mask the thoughts in my head. And the only way I could do that was to keep my mind busy or doing something else.

Alcohol did not work. I drunk for about two weeks and after about four days, I doubled the amount. Then about another four days, I doubled the amount again. It got a little bit

4 - Can Over Thinkers Meditate?

4 - Can Over Thinkers Meditate?

Can people that think a lot really get the benefits from meditation?

Something that would confuse many people when they spend time with me, and even my clients is that I am an over thinker. My brain has this ability to think crazy stuff up almost constantly, and most of the time when I don't want it to.

What is it about bedtime? Suddenly everything is important, from how aeroplanes work to what I'm going to buy my niece in six years time for her 30th birthday. It's crazy.

In this episode I helped to enlighten us about meditation and how even over thinkers can meditate.

Transcript

Intro: Alexander Pope, one of the greatest English poets of the 18th century said, "Blessed is he who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed.: I love that. That's one of my favorite sayings. I'm Steven Webb and this is Stillness In The Storms Podcast.

On today's show, I'm going to share how to stop expectations from ruining your inner peace. We all have these expectations of what life is going to be like, how people should show up, all these stories in our heads of all different types of how life should be. I guess that's the overarching thing of expectations. So on this podcast, we're gonna see why do expectations block your happiness? Should we drop expectations entirely? Why healthy expectations?

So I want to go back to that first quote, 'Blessed is he who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed', Alexander Pope, I guess that's what it comes down to, here on the spiritual journey alone and that is don't expect anything. Should we be really not expect anything from a partner or a family member? Is it really the way the world's gonna work nowadays? Well, we'll explore about that a little later, but I want to share one other quote as well, because it goes two ways. Bruce Less says, "I'm not in this world to live up to your expectations and you're not in this world to live up to mine.'

I love that quote also because that does the other side of it as well. let's look at why expectations are, where do we have them in life? Well, as we're going through school and we think about careers, think about work, what we're going to do in life, we have expectations of us. Where our lives go and we have expectations of life and career. I can remember at school and whenever I bumped into any family members or people I hadn't seen for a while, it was like, "What do you want to be when you're older?"

"What are you gonna do?:"

 "How are your exams going?"

Expectations of yourself
