Ep.66 Discussion about Nuclear Waste storage with Jarkko Stenfors from Posiva Part 2

In this second part of the discussion about nuclear waste storage with Jarkko Stenfors from Posiva, we are discussing how the copper canisters containing the waste are treated and store in the long term. Also some explanation on what experiments and testing have been done to ensure the safety of the storage for hundreds of years. And finally we go into future scenario to hypothesize what could happen to the storage site when all the people that build it are not around anymore, what precaution need to be employed to keep it safe in the unforeseen future.

Ep.65 Discussion about Nuclear Waste storage with Jarkko Stenfors from Posiva Part 1

Ep.65 Discussion about Nuclear Waste storage with Jarkko Stenfors from Posiva Part 1

In this first part of the episode we are discussing about Posiva, how the nuclear waste is generated in the power plants and its short term storage. Then we start the discussion about Posiva's plans for long term storage in their underground facilities in Olkiluoto. In there the nuclear waste is transferred from the short term storage to copper canisters that will then be welded shut and moved to the final resting place over 400 meters underground.

In the next part we are discussing what happens to the canisters after they are closed and about all the testing done in the last 20 years by Posiva.

Ep.53 Nano-materials research in EU, roll-to-roll manufacturing, Microfluidics and printed electronics

In this episode I'm going through some results from a CORDIS results pack about nano-materials (Cordis website)  while going a bit deeper into what Microfluidics is, some applications  and roll-to-roll fabrication. The at the end a bit about printed  electronics in connection with the roll manufacturing.

Microfluidics is a research field that focuses on small liquids  amount and small hardware dimensions to work in laminar flow, this opens  the possibilities for several applications in medical, chemical and  more fields. The roll-to-roll production enables the cost of devices to  be lower with high production capability.

Ep.50 Inputs and human-machine interaction with focus on keyboard layout research with Anna Fait

In this episode we have a very interesting discussion with Anna Fait from ETH Zurich (Twitter @AnnaFeit and http://annafeit.de)  about her research on inputs methods and optimization of keyboard  layouts in particular the research on the new French official layout  (more info here and here the layout (in French) ).

The discussion is about all the new input solutions that are  researched from better typing to VR and how the research is performed.  The french layout is the best example of that, using algorithms and real  data from people typing to analyze where all the special characters in a  keyboard should be placed.

Sorry for the audio quality, we had some connection issues apparently  and it is really hard to remove those clicks. I will try more and  re-upload the audio if I manage to get it fixed.

Ep.42 1000+ downloads! Then some discussion about Anchor podcast hosting and the new Samsung Flex

Ep.42 1000+ downloads! Then some discussion about Anchor podcast hosting and the new Samsung Flex

In this episode we are celebrating the 1000 downloads milestone.  Might not be much but it is nice to know that people actually want to  listen to us (or start to just to making us feel nice) and we hope that  we will continue improve the content going forward. Next milestone is 52  episodes, the real 1 year of podcasting.

The we go to speak about Anchor,  a podcast hosting service that is actually free and we might try soon,  free is good. There maybe we even get some sponsorships? That would be  another massive achievement.

Since we need to speak also abut something cool, the new foldable  Samsung "phone" is out soon and that is definitely something interesting  to see!

Ep.41 Discussing Trigoni with Project manager Aleksa Pesic from YIT

In this episode we have a discussion with Aleksa about the Trigoni project, the tower complex in the Pasila district of Helsinki built by YIT. The Trigoni is a new complex of several towers as high as 180 meters combining residential, commercial (offices and shopping centers) as well as an hotel. The project is utilizing the space left from the old train depot near the Pasila station.
During the episode we discuss about the history of the project, how is it to actually create something of this scale and how the Trigoni connect with the area. Also some interesting details about how the towers' shape came about and the style of the architecture.

Ep.39 DeepMind's AI against professional Starcraft 2 players

Ep.39 DeepMind's AI against professional Starcraft 2 players

In this episode we are discussing the recent results of Alphastar, the new deep learning algorithm from DeepBlue, playing Starcraft 2. The AI went 10-1 against 2 different pro gamers in Protoss vs Protoss matches. The discussion is not on the technical side unfortunately because we are not expert in deep learning in any way but more on the results. Is the AI really having better strategies or the micro and technical "skills" are mainly its advantage?
Interesting discussion when mostly knowing the SC2 side of things, we hope to find someone that would come to speak with us about how the deep learning algorithm actually work.

We have a nice discussion on the distillery, the only one in Helsinki at the moment, the business of distilling spirits and in general about Gin and Whiskey.
Nice discussion as usual where we are still learning new things about distilling even after few episodes on the topic. And BTW if you can, try their Dry Gin, it is really worth as well as the other nice and sometimes a bit weird products.

Ep.27 ALD surface chemistry and Simulations with Simon Elliott

In this episode I'm joined by Simon Elliott (@simon_D_Elliott) from Schrödinger to talk about what computer simulations can teach us about the chemistry of ALD at the atomic level. The discussion starts with some introduction and example of how the ALD deposition works at the smallest scale, too small for the normal analytical technique to analyse.
Some discussion about simulations are performed and the computer hardware necessary. As usual we did not manage to get too deep into some particular topic because we need to keep the podcast in a good listening time but we will probably come back on the topic in the future.
Next week we will take a break from ALD and change the topic but we will be back with a guest from the industry to see the other side of the technology.

In this episode we have our friend Miia from Fazer speaking with us about how food (cookies in particular) is made in an industrial scale. How are new products developed and then what is research in the food industry.
Not surprising that a lot of the food is produced in a factory similar to at home but on a bigger scale. Ep.19 Nuclear Fusion research with Pietro Part.2

In this second episode we are again discussing with Pietro, a researcher at consorzio RFX in Padova (Italy) about Nuclear Fusion. This week's episode is more focused on the physics of nuclear fusion with focus on Pietro's research on the atomic beam insertion into the plasma and tech in general to sustain the plasma in the reactor.
It is really interesting for us to discuss the topic with an expert because the technology is well known by most of the people as being the future energy revolution but the details are much less known. We learn a lot and hopefully you will too.
