Special Episode, Auckland Shareholders Association, Interview with Paul Harrison from Salt Investment

Special Episode, Auckland Shareholders Association, Interview with Paul Harrison from Salt Investment

The Auckland Shareholders association runs regular investor meetups and presentations and had one planned for later this month. Unfortunately, the event was cancelled due to the Covid-19 lockdown. Each event has guest speakers, often CEOs of NZX listed companies as well as other well-known market specialists. The events are a great place to enhance your investing knowledge, meet likeminded people and get an insight that is not normally allowed to retail investors. The shareholders association also does a lot of work to represent your interests as shareholders, they advocate and scrutinise boards, attend annual meetings and send out a regular investing newsletter. For a nominal annual fee, the shareholders association is some of the best value you can get in the markets at the moment. Find out more information and how to join your local branch at www.nzshareholders.co.nz

In this special episode of the podcast, I interview Paul Harrison, who was due to be one of the guest speakers that was due to present at our event later in the month.

Paul has more than 28 years of experience in the finance sector. Paul is a Director and Shareholder of Salt and a Portfolio Manager of Salt's wholesale funds.

Paul started his career as an Accountant with Ernst & Whinney in 1985. He then spent nine years working as an Associate Director for Southpac Investment Management and five years as Investment Manager for Goldman Sachs JB Were Asset Management. Other roles have included Director and CFO for software company EstarOnline Limited and an Institutional Adviser for share broker Doyle Paterson Brown.

Immediately prior to founding Salt, Paul was employed for over five years as Portfolio Manager/Head of Equities at BT Funds Management (NZ) Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Westpac Financial Services Group Limited.

You can find out more about Salt by going to www.saltfunds.co.nz

Episode 51, The Port of Napier, will it be the little IPO that beats the market?

In Episode 51 of the Stock Market Movers podcast we discuss the upcoming IPO of the Port of Napier.  The NZX feels awash with IPOs recently.  At one end of the spectrum we have had Cannasouth which is going to be duking it out in the medicinal marijuana space.  Port of Napier is at the other end, having its history dating back 150 years.

During the episode we discuss the nature of IPOs and what it means to participate in them.  In the episode Jeremy attempts to value the IPO and get an insight into the sellers and what they are looking to achieve.

The Podcast turns 50! An interview with a very very SPECIAL GUEST

The Podcast turns 50! An interview with a very very SPECIAL GUEST

50 is always an important number.
It is an important birthday. There are 50 states in the United States of America. You raise your bat in cricket when you score it, a one day cricket match is also contested over 50 overs. We even have 50 Shades of Gray and 50 Cents. I still remember today my Dad giving me a 50 cent coin as my first ever pocket money.
50 is the smallest number that is the sum of two non-zero square numbers in two distinct ways: 50 = 12 + 72 = 52 + 52. It is also the sum of three squares, 50 = 32 + 42 + 52, and the sum of four squares, 50 = 62 + 32 + 22 + 12.
In the action movie Speed, which depicts a Los Angeles cop (played by Keanu Reeves), who must rescue civilians on a bus that has a bomb rigged to it which will detonate if the bus's speed drops below 50 mph. Sticking with roads, in New Zealand the speed limit on most urban roads is 50 kmph.
The phrase "fifty-fifty" commonly expresses something divided equally in two; in business this is often denoted as being the ultimate in equal partnership.
Finally, 50 follows 49 and precedes 51. And this is where we are at with the podcast. I am doing this spiel to delay saying who the special guest is on the show. But one thing I can tell you is that the host is Matt Joass, you can find out more about Matt by listening to episode 36 or by going to his website,
www.mattjoass.com and checking out some of his free blog posts.
Thanks very much for listening to the podcast, I really appreciate everyone who tunes in each week and I am humbled by the feedback that I have received.
Oh, and in stocks, a 50 bagger is when a stock increases in value by at least 50 times its purchase price.

49, What does the Cricket World Cup, Z Energy and Warren Buffett have in common?

They have nothing in common except that they are the three topics in Episode 49 of the Stock Market Movers podcast.  It was another quiet news week on the NZX so Jeremy took the chance to talk about his views on the Cricket World Cup for a couple of minutes, we talk about Z Energy and their recent quarterly update and we spend some time looking at some more Berkshire Hathaway Annual General Meetings.  This time we talk about a question Warren Buffett got at the 1997 AGM about intrinsic value.

48, The Unscripted off-the-cuff episode: AWF Madison, Michael Hill & Paysauce

To be completely honest, I was flat out this week and did not get to do much in the way of podcast preparation.  I have had work and the cricket world cup taking up too much of my time.  So this week I did an unscripted episode where I just looked at information and talked.  In the first half of the episode I run through the notes from a presentation I did earlier in the week on the NZX recruiter, AWF Madison.  Then I talk about Michael Hill and their recent market update, I do this by reading the information off the screen and not planning out what I am going to say.  Finally we finished off the show with an update on Paysauce, again, what I am saying here is completely off the cuff.

47, Abano Healthcare, Warehouse Tour and Chris Heaslip hits the sell button on Pushpay

47, Abano Healthcare, Warehouse Tour and Chris Heaslip hits the sell button on Pushpay

On this weeks podcast I dive into a recent trading update from Abano Healthcare, the $100 million dollar New Zealand and Australian dental care provider.  The most interesting thing about Abano is to take a look at the goodwill on the balance sheet and make assumptions from there.

The biggest news of the week was Chris Heaslip selling around half of his Pushpay shares.  While I will not be able to say this definitively I believe that this is a logical action for a guy that wants to realise a return on his investment and set himself up for life.  The news should be neutral to the stock price.

Finally, during the week I did a tour with the local Shareholders Association of the North Island distribution centre for the Warehouse Group.  I learnt a few things that I share on the podcast.

Episode 46, King Salmon, Greencross Health, Fletcher Building, Mainfreight and TIL Logistics
