Supporting Children Affected By Domestic Abuse - our approach

In this, the final episode of the series we hear from some of the organisations who are at the Children Affected by Domestic Abuse Conference.

They tell you more about the important work that they’re doing in Stockport, how they’re linking into the Stockport's Domestic Abuse Partnership projects and what they think are the next steps for this initiative.

Hear from Clare Osment from Ongoing Women's Local Support also known locally as OWLS to support women who have left refuges and are trying to rebuild their life.

Clare set up the group in 2016 after experiencing the same challenge herself.

Clare spent 10 weeks in a refuge run by Stockport without Abuse, a charity you heard from in Episode 2 of this podcast.

This is a survivor’s story, so some of the subject matter and language may not be suitable for all audiences.

Hear from Stockport without Abuse, a charity that provides a range of services to help support women, men and children who are affected by domestic abuse.

First up is the charity’s CEO Naz Ghodrati who tells you what they’ve learnt from their Safe Choices programme, which works prominently with high risk young people with complex cases.

After Naz you’ll hear from their Children and Young Persons prevention worker Emily Norman. She’s here to tell you about a fantastic Domestic Abuse resource project that’s currently being piloted in a school in Stockport. She tells you more about what’s been going including how they’re using stop motion animation to share key messages about domestic violence.

Hear from Stepping Hill Hospital about how they’re addressing domestic abuse. They’ve piloted a  dedicated independent domestic violence advocate to work with staff and patients to remove the stigma and fear about disclosing, asking about and reporting domestic abuse.

You’ll hear from Rebecca Oatway, Lily Blundell and Janet Wilcox who are working across the hospital's departments such as maternity, neonatal and children's to help safeguard victims.

Hear from Chris McLoughlin, Director of Children's Services at Stockport Council who introduces the overall Children Affected by Domestic Abuse project.

Plus, Erykah Blackburn IDVA /Community Manager,  part of the Caring Dads project in Stockport. This is an intervention programme for men who have been physically or emotionally abusive towards their children's mother. Erykah tells you all about their impact, learnings and future plans.

Dan outlines the latest stats relating to domestic abuse, explains the importance of a multi-agency approach when it comes to domestic abuse training and why you should consider getting your team trained in this important issue.
