Stoop Sits

By Gina

At the start of the quarantine and shelter in place orders during the COVID19 pandemic, I decided to create a virtual neighborhood stoop on which come together, talk about how we feel, apply some yogic wisdom and do a daily guided meditation.

The first season episodes were all originally on Instagram Live with accompanying video and live participation from guests and we called it "It's A Workable Day In The Neighborhood" for those 32 days.

For Season 2 onward, these weekly, lively, un-polished sessions are called simply "Stoop Sits" so we can keep the neighborly goodness going.

Stoop Sits - 08/18/20

“Take It As It Comes” sparked today’s talk and reminded me of the Hindu deity Ganesha and seeing perceived obstacles as path.

It’s such an important time to care for yourself so that you don’t lose sight of your incredible capacity to keep showing up as your true self, come what may, obstacles be damned.

Stoop Sits - 07/21/20

Today we explore the idea of probing some of the ways we may unintentionally restrict or “incarcerate ourselves” and the concept of getting into behavioral grooves that may ultimately leave us feeling toxic. Then we sit and remember that our thoughts and emotions are our domain alone, we can always choose what we soak in. Love you all!!

Stoop Sits - 07/14/20

After a friend dumped me on Instagram, I got to pondering this idea that some people think we can't be serious about what's going on in the world if we're still engaging in play, silliness and joy. And that's just a part of our conditioned consciousness that says we're either THIS or THAT. But Nature is not black or white, me or other, work or play. It's YOGA, the union of what appear to be polarities. Yoga is like a Venn diagram, that union space between what seem to be opposites. Trust me, we can be very serious about our activism AND still laugh and find joy. I share a teaching from the author Audre Lorde about how joy provides the power for change (which is why joy is an act of resistance!) and from Dr. Chelsea Jackson Roberts' 95 year old granny. Give a listen.

Stoop Sits - 6/30/20

Hey neighbors! In today's episode I talk about how challenged we’re feeling with everything that's happening in the world, playing the long game, getting into top nervous system shape and exactly how meditation can help (vs a vague “it’s good for you”). May it be of benefit! 🙏

Stoop Sits - 6/23/20

It’s my birthday week! 48 is right around the corner and I’ve been in REFLECTION. Today I talk about how “healing is the unlearning of patterns” and what that means to me. I also talk about how to use the practices of Yoga to support that process and then we get right to it with a Wholeness Meditation. Feel free to share! May it be of benefit 🤗

Stoop Sits - 6/16/20

Hey Neighbors! Join me on the Stoop to talk about the call to awaken to your conditioned consciousness, do the inner work to disrupt some regressive patterns and then the outer work to activate change in the world, starting with you. Trick is, little things like identifying as "non-confrontational" can bring that external work to a stand-still. On the Stoop today I unpack how we began to identify this way and talk about how to apply a gentleness to that story but also a firm resolve to stop feeding it in the face of absolutely necessary change. May it be of benefit!

Stoop Sits - 6/9/20

We are back on the STOOP! We had a powerful week on mute and I was so grateful for the invitation to speak to this concept of feeling “high vibration” vs “low vibration” emotions and the harm those labels can do. I also riff on wholeness, metabolization and the generation of empowered compassion. And we meditate together as we always do.

Thank you neighbors! Feel free to share as you like and remember these sits are also available on video at IGTV www.instagram.com/yoginiontheloose/channel May it be of benefit!

Stoop Sits - 5/19/20

Today the neighbors slide onto the virtual stoop and we talk TRUTH. Right now we're all trying to figure out the day to day truth and some of us are taking this time to explore our bigger and deeper truth. Is there “the truth” or only YOUR truth? Obstacles to finding it and the two necessary ingredients to find truth. May it be of benefit!

Stoop Sits - 5/12/20

On the Virtual Stoop today we explore whether we're treating this time as a "pause" or a "shift"? And also whether we are WAITING for things to change and in so doing if we're missing the opportunities to find meaning and be meaningful? Are we contributing to our own suffering by waiting through these moments in hopes of different moments? And then of course we do our guided koshas meditation together. So much love to you on this wild journey. May it be of benefit!

Stoop Sits - 5/5/20

It's A Workable Day In The Neighborhood is back as Stoop Sits! In today's episode we have a very happy return to Instagram Live to connect with the live crew again. Gina talks about her vision for this next iteration which includes a lot of rawness, a marked lack of polishing and a lot of authentic spontaneity. She also talks about a tendency to incubate ideas to death while waiting for the "perfect" circumstances (the "when/then syndrome") which leads to nothing every really coming to fruition, a feeling of failing to launch your visions into the world and why all this may be... And then some HOORAH for carpe diem and do it NOW. The icecaps are melting y'all! It's time!!

PS - I tried out a brand new mic for this and the setup wasn't quite right so the audio is off. I commit to keep working on it until it is nectar to your ears ;)

It's A Workable Day In The Neighborhood - 4/16/20

Today, on our last stoop sit before I head into 10 days of Advanced Teacher Training, I share the 2 words that emerged when I focused on this last day: CARPE DIEM. I get REAL fired up talking about the opportunity we have amidst all this and what I think the Universe is offering us. And I'm overcome with gratitude and love for all y'all. Thanks for being my neighbors and supporting every single day being WORKABLE. And we sit together for koshas meditation! May it be of benefit!

It's A Workable Day In The Neighborhood - 4/15/20

Today's invitation to stay awake, present and intentional in the midst of all this is to explore a strength or growth that has been revealed through this experience so far and a regressive pattern or "exciting gap" that has been revealed. This gives you a chance to celebrate growth and identify where to apply your mindfulness to change regressive to progressive or  manure into fertilizer! And of course, we sit together in our koshas meditation. May it be of benefit!

Today I share a sweet surprise gift from my friend Monica and what my 2nd favorite job of all time is. Then we discuss ESSENTIAL in depth, as relates to each layer of your consciousness as well as short term essential vs long game essential. What is truly essential to your thriving and surviving in the long run as a co-creator? How will we be showing up in our future together? And, of course, we sit in meditation. May it be of benefit!

Today's topic du jour is RESILIENCE!! And how it is deeply rooted in your sense of self and reflects your fluid power. And that no external teacher/person/guide can ever give it to you, it can be supported but only YOU can generate it within yourself. Awareness is key. And of course we do our whole-being koshas sit. Thank you neighbors!! May it be of benefit!

Happy Day to you, whatever you may be celebrating! Today I share a little family snapshot of our Easter mornings and candy with a side story about my one and only Seder meal. Then explore the theme of renewed life and rising up as relates to where we are in this junction space between old and new paradigms. And I share a chant I've been using to sustain my capacity for action and optimism. MAY IT BE OF BENEFIT!

It's A Workable Day In The Neighborhood - 4/10/20

Today's human question is around zit stickers and then I dive right into an exploration of Negativity Bias - why we do it and how profoundly depleting and upsetting it can be. My suspicion is that we're all likely doing it right now, riding the Negativity Bias Flume Ride. Then I give 4 steps to work with it when you witness it happening inside you. Then I give (late) hugs and, of course, we sit in the spirit of KNOW THYSELF so we can be more intentional. May it be of benefit!

After I go a little bit cookoo at the beginning of our stoop sit and share my new t-shirt, I tell the super quick, Ginafied version of the Ramayana with emphasis on Hanuman and why he is an interesting role model for the times we find ourselves in. I incorrectly name a translation author, not Eknath Easwaran, who is AWESOME, but RK Narayan. (Another interesting version I have liked is "Arrow Of The Blue Skinned God" by Jonah Blank). YOU CAN DO THE IMPOSSIBLE! And then, of course, we sit and observe our wholeness from skin to soul. May it be of benefit!

It's Taco Tuesday and I wanted to Tacobout the fact that you've already done what we might have labeled impossible. And I share how I make it through a morning run and how that feels like exactly what we're doing to make it through this challenge stronger and wiser than before. And of course, we sit with our whole selves, together. May it be of benefit!

It's A Workable Day In The Neighborhood - 4/6/20

It's A Workable Day In The Neighborhood - 4/6/20

I come clean about my neighborHOODIE collection with this one that embarrasses me. And talk about how the ways we have fed our "identity" on the level of manomaya kosha may be causing you to suffer right now and hinder your ability to track how you're really feeling and how best to use your resources of the moment. And we go into our koshas sit to remember our whole selves and not just our identities. The Guru is the Self! May it be of benefit!

It's A Workable Day In The Neighborhood - 4/5/20

Super Soul Sunday! Today I read a quote from Sally Kempton on Loneliness and read the stunningly gorgeous and timely poem The Invitation by Oriah Mountain Dreamer. I read it years ago but it has never meant more than it means to me right now when we're co-creating a new paradigm through which we see each other and connect. And of course, our daily koshas sit where we commit to the power of awareness and recognizing our wholeness. May it be of benefit!

Today I offer an invitation to explore 1) What changes/commitments/rituals/practices have BEEN WORKING for you over the last 3 weeks and 2) What changes/commitments/rituals/practices have NOT BEEN WORKING for you over the last 3 weeks. Its a great time for a check in and an acknowledgement that we're writing this playbook as we go and letting go of something that isn't working is NOT failure. In the second 3rd of our stoop sesh, I open it up for Q&A and get a wide range of fabulous questions. In the final 3rd, of course, we sit together for our koshas meditation. You've got this. May it be of benefit!

It's A Workable Day In The Neighborhood - 4/3/20

Today I'm moved to tears of joy at witnessing the support and love from others who are in equally dire straits. I share a story from the anthropologist Margaret Mead about what the first signs of civilization are in a culture and how we now have the opportunity to be the most civil we've ever been. It's stunningly beautiful. And then we sit together in meditation on the virtual stoop. Loving you all so much. May it be of benefit.

While it's probably the least April Foolsy feeling April Fools Day ever, I wear my bathrobe hoodie (I see you Lebowski) and talk about Hasya, one of the Tantric Nava Rasas or 9 emotional essences. It is one of the 9 "flavors" of human emotion and one we don't want to forget, even in the toughest times. Engaging in the humor of being human keeps us from drying out! I also talk about random hats as tools to keep silly alive and, of course, we sit together in Kosha Meditation. May it be of benefit!

Today I talk about why I'm wearing an enormous Burton sweatshirt from 1993 and why I'll never get rid of it. What snowboarding taught me about my ego and expanding my shame threshold to stay with the things I really want and believe in. The transcendence of the conditioned patterns of our ego is WHAT YOGA IS ALL ABOUT! Consistency gives more than it asks for! Keep your stories close y'all. Short calming pranayama followed by our koshas meditation! May it be of benefit.

"Reverend" Gina is in the house today!! Then we go into a calm-inducing pranayama right into our koshas meditation. May it be of benefit.

It's A Workable Day In The Neighborhood - 3/29/20

It's Sunday! I sing the chorus of U2's Sunday Bloody Sunday and the moment my world expanded at U2 in Oakland in 1987 on the Joshua Tree tour. We have a moment of silent gratitude for the healthcare professionals that are having to heal people physically and hold space for their intense emotions. And for the decision makers right now, everywhere. I read Jalal Ad-Din Rumi's poem The Guest House and talk about shifting perspective from something being done TO us, to an invitation to grow, evolve, adapt. Suffering is always the catalyst for change on our evolutionary journeys. Let's do it so we can hold space for others when they come off the line. Then we do our daily koshas meditation. May it be of benefit neighbors!

I say hi to as many neighbors as I can today, sing Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting by Elton John, I talk about my theory of your preferred way of dressing being from the period of your life when you were forming your identity, we do some Q&A about music and meditation and teaching and then go into our Koshas Meditation! Today we sing a little Friday I'm In Love by the Cure, talk about wearing hoodies from schools you didn't go to, rank our friends based on who you would call to break you out of jail and then I riff on how to hold space for your feelings and inquire into what they're trying to tell you based on the koshas model of consciousness. Then, our daily koshas meditation! May it be of benefit!

New hoodie alert! And I talk about waning enthusiasm for "workability" and the importance of having Reliable Ritual Resources at the Ready for when you start to mentally and energetically dip. We're unlikely to make them up in the peak of panic so good to know thyself and have them on hand and turn to them, consistently, over and over and over. Then I offer one I just created based on the 5 senses coping technique - 5 movements of prana, 4 4-count breaths, 3 things you're grateful for, 2 things you've learned and 1 person you're sending love to in this moment. Then we do our kosha meditation. May it be of benefit!

It's A Workable Day In The Neighborhood - 3/23/20

Real talk about how to make use of this time when we're feeling the loss of things we love and a feeling of loss around our freedoms. In the pandemic time, we might label this "quarantine" but in other traditions, like Vipassana and Buddhism, there are voluntary times of this reduction called retreat. And they are for a high spiritual purpose. To generate compassion. Followed by a sit and a big virtual hug.

Hey neighbors! Today I talked about the root of our fears being uncertainty. No playbook. No precedent. And we tend to focus on what we DON'T know. But right now is a call for us to recognize what we DO KNOW and that we are adaptable and can rise up to whatever changes happen. Reading from Pema Chodron's Comfortable with Uncertainty. And a nice sit. Love you all.
