Verhaal: Wijkbewoners gaven aan graag een dier of sterrenbeelden terug te willen zien op één van de muren. En wat is er dan beter dan een gave mural van een ram? Het astrologische symbool van durf, doortastendheid en ambitie? Het sterrenbeeld dat graag nummer één is en vooraan de dierenriem staat. Een onverzettelijk dier dat staat voor uitdagingen en avontuur. En bovendien het sterrenbeeld van kunstenaar Dopie én de bewoner van het huis.
Alles komt samen in mural Het Sterrenbeeld: RAM. Het kunstwerk vormt een kleurrijke toevoeging aan de kleurrijke Sluiswijk en is daarmee een passende ode aan de ziel van deze buurt.
Voor de oplettende kijker: Dopie maakte een knipoog naar het “Volkoren Sluis Biscuit”.

Verhaal:
Wie droomt er niet van om een superheld te zijn? In Sluiswijk vind je superhelden achter allerlei voordeuren. Zo hoopt één jongetje nog altijd uit te groeien tot spiderman, wilde een meisje per se een groene ninja zien en wordt een andere jongen al sinds zijn derde ‘de Hulk van de buurt’ genoemd.
Kunstenaarsduo PWH (Pipsqueak Was Here) maakte aan de hand van deze verhalen een Stencil Art mural, met als centrale figuur een meisje van 6 meter hoog dat zich als superheld heeft gekleed en stoer over het speelpleintje voor haar kijkt. Dat niemand het in zijn hoofd haalt om het kwaad naar Sluiswijk te brengen!
Aan de linkerkant op de muur: “piep zei de muis in het voorhuis” met iets lekkers in zijn pootjes…zie jij wat het is?

Verhaal: Kijk om je heen en je ziet spelende kinderen in deze wijk. Geen wonder dat de bewoners minimaal één muur wilden toewijden aan de kleinste kinderen van Sluiswijk. Dat deed kunstenaar Hedof. En hoe.
In deze mural zie je twee hoofdfiguren spelen in een speeltuin, een jongen en een meisje. De jongen glijdt van een glijbaan, die in zijn verbeelding de slurf van een olifant is. Het meisje bovenin zit op een wipwap. Een wipkip wordt met verbeeldingskracht van de kinderen een konijn, die speelt met een voetbal.
De bakkersmuts op het hoofd van de jongen verwijst naar de Sluismascotte op de oude koekblikken van de vroegere biscuitfabriek die hier furore maakte. Ook heeft hij een biscuit vast en een ouderwetse deegroller. Op de achtergrond zie je een fabriek. De schoorsteen dampt en door de straten dwarrelt een heerlijke koekjesgeur.

Verhaal: Sluiswijk is een thuis voor mooie verhalen. Bijvoorbeeld die van de wijkbewoonster en haar liefde voor panters. Het dier loopt al haar hele leven met haar mee. Van kinds af aan is ze gefascineerd door dit mysterieuze dier. Ze heeft zelfs thuis een beeldje staan van een panter die veel voor haar betekent. Met de kracht van een panter zorgde ze voor anderen en werkte ze om haar kinderen een liefdevolle en stabiele basis te geven. Nu haar kinderen op zichzelf wonen, is het haar tijd.
Nicky Nahafahik vertaalde dit naar de mural: “Calm saves the day”. Met de beeltenis van een machtige gevlekte panter in een ontspannen pose.
De boodschap? Met kalmte overwin je elke situatie en ervaar je de sereniteit van een vlinder. De mural kwam mede tot stand door de kinderen uit de buurt.

Verhaal:
Onder de rook van de Adelaarshorst klinken regelmatig de stemmen van vier andere exotische vogels. Dat zijn de ara’s van één van de bewoners. Ze zijn een begrip in de wijk, maken flink wat geluid en zijn de grote liefde van de bewoner. Hij heeft er maar liefst vier. Twee binnen, twee buiten. “De mensen uit de buurt weten wel dat de Ara bij mij hoort. Een ara op de muur zou mooi zijn.” Zo geschiedde. Dankzij de creatieve mural van Nina Valkhoff, die het verhaal op botanische wijze op de muur verbeeldt. Zie je trouwens de “volkoren” verwijzing in de schets?

Verhaal: In één van de huizen in Sluiswijk is het altijd lente. Want in het huis van één van de bewoonsters vind je altijd bloeiende bloemen. Zonnebloemen, margrieten, rozen en tulpen in kleurrijke boeketten, ze kleuren haar leven.
Kunstenaar Joost Zwanenburg liet zich inspireren door de bewoonster en creëerde een mural aan de hand van een foto van een zelf gemaakt boeket. Dat niet alleen. Hij bracht ook de bloemenliefhebster én haar dochters op creatieve wijze terug in de muurschildering. Haar dochters komen terug als twee koolmezen die de buurt opfleuren, net zoals deze dochters graag doen met stoepkrijt.
Nu we het toch over koolmezen hebben, zie je waar de linker koolmees van snoept?

Verhaal:
Een wijk op zich is het, de Sluiswijk. Maar wel een wijk die middenin in de wereld staat. Met bewoners die zich zorgen maken over de toekomst van onze maatschappij en planeet. In het bijzonder die ene ras-Amsterdammer die in Deventer kwam wonen. Hij wil minder vervuiling op de wereld, meer schoon eten en drinken en een schone omgeving waar iedereen van kan genieten. En vrede in de wereld. Daarom vond hij het tijd voor een muur met een beetje flowerpower. Een beetje hippie en een beetje sixties.
Dat gevoel bracht kunstenaar Timber Sommerdijk terug in deze mural. Je ziet hoe een heelal van bloemen wordt opgeslokt of omarmd door een persoon. De mens is onderdeel van de natuur, dat mogen we vooral niet uit het oog verliezen. De vredesduif kijkt toe, net als de hond in deze wijk vol hondenliefhebbers.
Natuurlijk zit er ook een “afgehapt (honden)koekje” in deze mural. Zie jij hem zitten?

Verhaal:
Wie door Sluiswijk loopt ziet hoogstwaarschijnlijk ergens wel iemand op zijn rug onder een auto liggen. Sleutelend. Werkend. De liefde voor auto’s zit diep bij veel van de wijkbewoners. Eén van de bewoners was zelfs een ware snelheidsduivel en een onbevreesde autocoureur. Hij woonde in Kampen en was gek op snelheid. In de woonkamer hangt nog een foto van hem in de auto. Op een prominente plek natuurlijk.
Wanneer Max Verstappen zijn gaspedaal indrukt zitten hier de Formule 1-fans gezamenlijk voor de televisie. Al deze ingrediënten gebruikte kunstenaar Zenk One voor zijn grafische ontwerp op deze muur. Het kleurenpalet is gebaseerd op de omgeving van de mural.
Maar zie je ook wat voor lekkers er op de schouder van de monteur zit?

Verhaal: Zeearend Harly vliegt al vele jaren ererondes door ‘zijn’ Adelaarshorst, het voetbalstadion van Go Ahead Eagles dat nauw verbonden is met deze wijk. Geen wonder dat de liefde voor adelaars diep geworteld is bij bewoners. Vele van hen leek het dan ook mooi om het dier te vereeuwigen in een mural. Het liefst middenin de vlucht. Een machtig roofdier. Intimiderend. In volle actie.
Dzia vertaalde de wensen naar de mural Deventer Adelaar. Een schitterende schildering van de adelaar die het heeft voorzien op een prooi in de bosjes onder de mural. Een indrukwekkende ode aan de wijk, de adelaar uit het Deventer stadswapen en natuurlijk ‘De Eagles’ verderop.
En trouwens: heb je ook het “koekiemonster-koekie” en de rood met gele vlinder gespot?

Verhaal:
Sluiswijk is niet vernoemd naar een sluis, maar naar Biscuitfabriek Sluis. En dat verhaal mag iedereen kennen. Daarom neemt Peter je mee in de geschiedenis van de plek en laat met zijn illustratieve stijl de oude koekfabriek herleven.
Op basis van oud beeldmateriaal brengt hij de typische fabriekselementen als de grote schoorsteen met de bedrijfsnaam, de schuine fabrieksdaken en de naam die destijds groot op het dak stond terug in het straatbeeld. In de sfeer van weleer lacht een vrouwelijke fabrieksmedewerker je toe, met een biscuit in haar hand, terwijl de koekjes met de Sluis-transportwagen door het land worden verspreid.
De adelaar keek en zag zo alle murals samenkomen...

Deze muurschildering van schilders-collectief De Strakke Hand brengt een ode aan het rijke markt- verleden van Deventer. In de Middeleeuwen vonden er jaarlijks vijf jaarmarkten plaats in de stad, die soms wel twee weken duurden. Kooplui uit binnen- en buitenland boden hun waren aan en de befaamde stokvis en Deventer Koek werden in groten getale verhandeld. Hoewel, verhandeld... Deze ondeugende jongen kan zich niet inhouden en neemt, ondanks de strenge blik van zijn moeder, een paar grote happen van die heerlijke kruidkoek.
Terwijl op de achtergrond het Bergkwartier en de Bergkerk schitteren valt ineens een rood gele voetbalsjaal op. Een subtiele knipoog naar het heden. En komen de gezichten je bekend voor? Dat zou zo maar eens kunnen. De vrouw en de jongen op de schildering kun je namelijk gewoon vandaag in Deventer tegenkomen.
Hanzesteden fietsroute
Deze muurschildering is onderdeel van het project Internatio- nale samenwerking Hanzesteden toen en nu. Binnen dit project is onder andere een internationale fietsroute gereali- seerd. NL: #KopjeOnder | Margot Olde Loohuis | Fietstunnel Hovenpad Deventer/Twello | Street Art streets
De gemeente Voorst zocht een creatieve manier om de fietstunnel bij Twello te laten opgaan in de omgeving. Een ontwerp met kleur, ruimte voor natuur en een link met de historie van deze plek. Want deze gemeente is bijzonder.
Voorst is de groene oase tussen drie (middel)grote steden. En deze plek vormde ooit de natuurlijke grens tussen al deze gebieden. Hier stroomde namelijk eeuwenlang de IJssel. Het is nu niet meer dan een slootje, maar deze ‘Oude IJssel’ is nog steeds de officiële grens tussen Gelderland en Overijssel.
Dat inspireerde de Deventer kunstenaar Margot Olde Loohuis tot het creëren van de mural ‘Onderwaterwereld’ of #KopjeOnder. Met deze muurschildering neemt Margot je mee onder water in de oude IJssel. Fiets onder het waterop- pervlak, kijk naar de lelies en geniet van dit vernieuwende perspectief, de vervreemding en de verwondering die het teweeg brengt. Een ode aan de plek, de geschiedenis en het water dat deze omgeving zo veel bracht.

Story: Neighbourhood residents expressed interest in seeing an animal or zodiac sign on one of the walls. And what would be better than an impressive mural of a ram? The ram is the zodiac sign for courage, perseverance and ambition-an uncompromising animal that stands for challenge and adventure. It’s also the sign of the artist Dopie and one of the house’s residents.
Everything has come together in this mural: The Zodiac Sign: RAM. The artwork adds a colourful touch to the colourful Sluiswijk neighbourhood and is a fitting ode to the soul of this neighbourhood.

Story: Who hasn’t dreamed of being a superhero? Here in Sluiswijk you’ll find superheroes behind all kinds of doors, such as one small boy who always wanted to grow up to be Spiderman, a young girl who wanted to see a green ninja, and another child who has been known since he was three years old as the “Hulk of the neighbourhood”.
Inspired by these stories, Artist duo PWH (Pipsqueak Was Here) created a Stencil Art mural depicting a very tall girl, an impressive six meters to be exact. She’s dressed as a super- hero, looking very cool and tough as she watches over her neighbourhood playground making sure no one gets any ideas about bringing evil to her Sluiswijk neighbourhood!

English: HEDOF- “Imaginary playground” - Muren & Buren Deventer
Story: Look around and you will see many children playing in this neighbourhood. It’s no wonder that the neighbour- hood wanted to dedicate at least one wall to Sluiswijk's youngest residents. That's what artist Hedof did.
In this mural, you see two main characters playing in a playground, a boy and a girl. The boy is sliding down a slide, which in his imagination is the trunk of an elephant. The girl is playing on a seesaw. With the children's imagination, a seesaw becomes a rabbit, playing with a football.
The baker's hat on the boy's head is a reference to the Sluis mascot on the old biscuit tins of the former biscuit factory, which caused a sensation here. He is also holding a biscuit and an old-fashioned rolling pin. In the background, you can see a factory. The chimney is steaming and a delicious smell swirls through the streets.

Story: Sluiswijk is home to many great stories including this one about a neighbourhood resident and her love for panthers. This animal has always followed her throughout her life. Since her youth, she has been fascinated by this lovely creature and even has a statue of a panther at home which has been very meaningful. With the strength of a panther she cared for others and worked to give her children a loving and stable base. Now that her children live on their own, this is her time.
Nicky Nahafahik translated this into the mural: “Calm saves the day” with the depiction of a powerful, spotted panther in a relaxed pose. What is the message behind this mural? Through calmness you can overcome difficult situations and experience the serenity of a butterfly. The mural was created with help from neighbourhood children.

Story: Under the smoke of the Eagle's Nest, the voices of four other exotic birds are regularly heard. These are the macaws of one of the local residents. They are a household name in the neighbourhood, make quite a bit of noise and are the resident's great love.
He has no fewer than four of them. Two inside, two outside. "People in the neighbourhood know that the macaw belongs to me. A macaw on the wall would be nice." And that’s how it happened.
Thanks to Nina Valkhoff's creative mural, which depicts the story botanically on the wall. By the way, do you see the "whole grain" reference in the painting?

Story: : In one of the houses in Sluiswijk, it is always spring. That’s because in this particular house, you will always find blooming flowers: sunflowers, daisies, roses and tulips in colourful bouquets. Artist Joost Zwanenburg was inspired by this special neighbourhood resident and created a mural based on a photo of a homemade flower bouquet. But that’s not all; he also creatively brought the flower enthusiast and her daughters back into the mural. Her daughters appear as two woodland birds brightening up the neighbourhood, just as her daughters love to do with sidewalk chalk.

This mural’s story: In one way, Sluisdijk is just a neighbourhood. But it is also a neighbourhood in the middle of the world with local residents who are concerned about the future of our society and planet. In particular, a former Amsterdam resident who came to live in Deventer. He would like to see less pollution in the world, clean and healthy food and water, a beautiful environment which everyone can enjoy, and world peace. A little bit hippie and a little bit sixties. Timber Sommerdijk captured that feeling in this mural. You’ll see a universe of flowers being engulfed by or embraced by a single person. People are part of nature; we cannot lose sight of that fact. This mural’s story: Anyone walking through Sluiswijk will most likely see someone lying on his back under a car somewhere, working and tinkering. The love for cars runs deep in many of the neighbourhood residents. One of the local residents was even a true speed demon and a fearless car driver. He lived in Kampen and loved speed. A picture of him in a car still hangs in the living room in a prominent place, of course. When Max Verstappen presses his accelerator, Formula 1 fans sit here together in front of the television. Artist Zenk One used all these ingredients for his graphic design on this wall. The colour palette is based on the mural's surroundings. But can you also see what goodies are on the mechanic's shoulder?

This mural’s story: The bald eagle Harly has flown for years through ‘his’ Adelaarshorst (eagles’ nest), the football stadium of Go Ahead Eagles, the beloved football team that is deeply connected with this neighbourhood. It’s no wonder that neighbourhood residents have a deep appreciation for eagles. Many residents expressed interest in paying tribute to this powerful and intimidating bird of prey in one of the murals and seeing it portrayed in flight and in full glory. Dzia translated those wishes into the mural Deventer Eagle, a gorgeous painting of the eagle on the hunt for prey in the bushes underneath the mural. It’s an impressive ode to the neighbourhood and, of course, the “Eagles” located just down the road. And, by the way, can you find the cookie monster cookie on this wall?

This mural’s story:
Sluiswijk is not named after a lock, but after Biscuit Factory Sluis, and it’s a great story everyone should know, which is why street artist Shortlife guides you through the history of this place, using his illustrative style to revive the old biscuit factory. Based on old camera footage, he brings typical factory elements back into the streetscape such as: the large chimney with the company name, the sloping factory roofs, and the name that used to appear in large letters on the roof. In the spirit of yesteryear, a female factory employee smiles at you, with a biscuit in her hand, as the treats are being distributed across the country with the Sluis transport truck. The eagle was watching and saw that it was good.

About the Walls and Neighbours project
Local residents of Sluiswijk knocked on Rentree housing association's door in 2020. The bright white painted walls in the neighbourhood were not particularly attractive to them. The neighbours had a much better idea for those walls: street art! Rentree approached Street Art Streets, the collective for street art in Deventer, and together with the neighbourhood, Kunstcircuit, Kunstenlab and Voor Elkaar-Teams , they developed the amazing street art project: 'Walls and Neighbours'.
Stichting de Tijdmachine (The Time Machine Nonprofit) travelled around the neighbourhood to collect and organise neighbourhood stories into various themes -from heroes to animals and from history to city pride. These themes were then translated into murals by nationally and internationally renowned street artists.
The murals can be seen around the Gooijerstraat in Deventer. From there, you can easily walk from artwork to artwork. Want to know more about this project and other street art murals in Deventer? Then visit: streetartstreets.nl.

This mural by painting collective De Strakke Hand pays tribute to Deventer's rich market past. In the Middle Ages, five annual markets took place in the city, sometimes lasting up to two weeks. Merchants from home and abroad offered their wares and the famous stockfish and Deventer Spiced Cake were traded in large numbers. Well, usually traded... this mischievous boy cannot hold back and, despite his mother's stern gaze, takes a few big bites of that delicious spiced cake.
As the Bergkwartier (Berg Quarter) and Bergkerk (Berg Church) shine in the background, a red and yellow football scarf suddenly catches the eye; a subtle nod to the present. And do the faces look familiar to you? They just might. After all, you might just run into the woman and boy in the painting today in Deventer.

The municipality of Voorst was looking for a creative way to make the cycle tunnel near Twello blend into its surroundings. They were looking for a design with colour, space for nature, and a connection to the history of this place. Because this municipality is special. Voorst is the green oasis between three (medium-sized) cities. This spot once formed the natural border between all these areas. After all, the river IJssel flowed here for centuries. It is now no more than a ditch, but this 'Oude IJssel' is still the official border between the Gelderland and Overijssel provinces, which inspired Deventer artist Margot Olde Loohuis to create the mural 'underwater world'. With this mural, Margot takes you underwater in the old IJssel River. Cycle under the water's surface, see the waterlilies and enjoy this innovative perspective, the alienation and wonder it creates. An ode to the place, the history and the water that brought so much to this area.

Graduated in 1997 from the CHK Constantijn Huygens in Kampen. (Now ArtEZ Zwolle). Since 1998 she lives and works in Deventer. As a child I loved to draw and paint. In essence, little has changed. Painting gives me a sense of adventure, I enter another world, another feeling and I want to convey that through my paintings. The process and the end result are part of that, but the discovery is the most important element. Since 2007 she mainly paint water in all its aspects. She like the character that is always mobile, reflects, is transparent and refracts the light. And when viewed from below the surface of the water, even more emerged. In recent years, this innovative perspective, showing an often invisible underwater world, the alienation and wonder it engenders, has become an almost philosophical source of inspiration.

Entrepreneurship, growth, crisis, war and casualties: this area has been through everything over the past few centuries. What began with the oil and hulling mills of Noury and van der Lande in 1838 grew into an area full of energy, innovation and renewal now known as S/park. Artist Johan Moorman has brought this eventful history together in his colourful mural.
Johan Moorman finds inspiration in retro-futuristic images, architecture, music and technological innovation. With his distinctive illustrative style, he leads the viewer from the Noury and van der Lande windmills and the historic building known as the “The Three Herrings” to the chemistry of AkzoNobel (now Nouryon) and further through the open doors of the innovation incubator S/park: a place for start-ups, students and researchers.
The mural is a colourful illustration of the chemistry happening at the Zutphenseweg. It’s a chemistry between people, where different groups are connected, and innovative minds work together on chemical and technological innovations that prepare us for the future. The mural lets us see that exciting and interesting things are happening at S/park, while, at the same time, the safety of people and the environment always comes first. The mural was made possible by a gift in connection with the 50th anniversary of the Wesselings-Van Breemen Foundation.

Deventer would not have become the city it is today without the cooperative power of the Hanseatic League. To bring this message creatively to young people, artist Hedy Tjin designed this "Wake Up Wall". In total, the artist created four of these murals for the new Canon of the Netherlands.
The text on the mural reads ‘Wij vermenigvuldigt de kracht van ik’ which translates to 'We multiply the power of I', a testament to the former Hanseatic League, a commercial and defensive confederation of merchant guilds and market towns in Northern Europe. The painting also shows a cog ship being loaded or unloaded by two people carrying bags and barrels, with a cityscape in the background.

This halftone portrait by Egbert.EGD is an ode to a pioneer, a man who fought against the tide for an industrial area in the Havenkwartier (harbour quarter). He became a catalyst for the Deventer economy and the namesake of this street: Mr. H.F. de Boer.
De Boer was an alderman at a time when Deventer was a fairly poor city. Every penny counted and not everyone saw the need for creating an industrial area. It was H.F. de Boer, in particular, who fought for the realisation of the port facilities. His idea was that the government should invest in the necessary infrastructure, and entrepreneurs should build for their own use. It turned out to be a move that would greatly improve the city’s industriousness.
The spirit of De Boer still lives on in the harbour area. Since 2012, it has once again been given a new lease of life, now boasting a hip and gritty area for creative entrepreneurs and residents. Once again, the government has invested in the infrastructure, and entrepreneurs and residents have (re)built for their own use.
Thanks to Egbert.EGD the former alderman looks onto the area with satisfaction. The viewer, however, may have to look twice. Up close, the mural seems to be a play of lines because of the half tone effect. But if you take a photo or a step back, the pieces will fall into place.

Artist GOMAD used the passage to the Adwaita courtyard as a canvas for this unique mural. The namesake of the courtyard, the poet Adwaita, is the focal point. He is surrounded by flora and fauna, a nod to Brahmanism, an Indian philosophy from which Adwaita drew inspiration for his poems.
GOMAD held onto his unique style, in which eyes, plants, animals and organic colour forms play an important role, but also crawled into Adwaita's head. He delved into a text about the Hindu God Brahmâ, who, as the story goes, created a woman, with whom he himself fell in love. She tried to escape his lovestruck stares, but each time Brahmâ grew another head so he could keep looking at her.
GOMAD draws the viewer into the story with piercing eyes looking anxiously at the courtyard. What else is there to see? Come take a look for yourself. Once inside the courtyard, the portrait of J. Dèr Mouw (Adwaita) will gaze upon you with a look of satisfaction.
This mural was created in March 2020 at a time when everything seemed to stand still. Homebound residents saw a work of art coming alive right in front of them. It has given a bright spot for the residents, a more beautiful entrance to the Adwaita courtyard and positive energy for the city.

The 1250th anniversary of Deventer in 2018 was an excellent opportunity to be inspired by our city’s past, present and future, which is exactly what Rotterdam illustrator and street artist Joren Joshua achieved with this mural.
The artist tells the story of this unique location in the Sluiskwartier, a former millworks that in the 19th century sat at the corner of the former city moat and the inner harbour, which has since been filled in. This location, where the lock was located, formed an important gateway. Next door the Raambuurt emerged as one of Deventer's first industrial areas.
Joren Joshua hopes you will see what you want to in his work. For one person, it might be an homage to our past as a port city with two docker workers busy carrying freight. The other may see the imprint of industry and workers in an old steamship and a red cogwheel. And the observant viewer will recognize the colours that perfectly suit Deventer and its birthday -the red and white of Deventer's coat of arms and, of course, red and yellow, the colours of our jewel, the football club - Go Ahead Eagles.

Industrial heritage, creative enterprises, art and culture, and the raw edge of former dock labour. This building on Scheepvaartstraat has everything that makes Deventer unique. Rotterdam illustrator and street artist I AM EELCO brought it all together beautifully in this mural, commissioned by Street Art Streets and Creative Event location PUNT, which are located in the building.
The mural is an ode to the characteristic Havenkwartier (Harbour Quarter), a place that in recent years has developed into a creative, mix-used hotbed, where hospitality, business and housing are combined with an active inner harbour. This specific Bodenloods dates from 1958 and functioned as a warehouse where general cargo and packages were processed and transported to Amsterdam by inland waterway.
In his mural, Eelco brings together both the history and the contemporary function of the location, also leaving room for interpretation. The bird could allude to the creative breeding ground that this area has become. The boy by the tree might represent a former dock worker or someone who is now relaxing in the Havenkwartier. The woman next to the curious fox could be a skipper’s wife anxiously awaiting her husband's return. The cup of coffee, the cosy cat and the dots are easier to interpret: a reference to the quirky event location now located in the building.

Deventer artist Will-Yoow (Wiljo Damstra-Rouwenhorst) designed a new freedom memorial in honour of an unforgettable Liberation Day that centred around 75 years of freedom in the Netherlands, but also reminded us of the fragility of freedom due to the oppressive Covid 19 pandemic.
Will-Yoow created two doves that, together, untie the symbolic ribbon that held Deventer in its grip and open the way to freedom. The colours red, white, blue and orange symbolise patriotism, which fits seamlessly with the celebration of the liberation 75 years ago. The red heart symbolises the love for the city of Deventer but also the heart for life and for the care that was so important for our society in 2020, the year of corona. In the blue part of the mural, a few corona particles are also visible.
This modern memorial was organised by Street Art Streets in honour of 75 years of freedom and was presented on May 5, 2020 by Deputy Mayor and Alderman for Culture, Carlo Verhaar.

How can one illustrate the constant tension between nature and recreation on the banks of the Ijssel River? Rotterdam artist Danny Rumbl did just that with his #Spoorbrugtrap, located on the sides of the stairs leading to the nature reserve area known as the Ossenwaard.
Danny Rumbl illustrated the unique natural value of the Ossenwaard by including two special bird species that breed in this area. On the side facing Deventer, there’s an illustrated corncrake (above) and spotted crake (below). The colourful flowers and plants are inspired by the flora which grows around the staircase and ensure that the mural fits in seamlessly with the beautiful nature reserve.
But even more than an ode to local ecology, the artist depicts the sometimes abrasive connection between humans and nature. On the other side of the staircase facing De Worp, a hare (inspired by the logo of IJssellandschap) shoots through the legs of a young person in pink shorts walking through the area. Hopefully, the mural will prompt visitors to think about their own connection and impact as they enter and exit the nature reserve.

With Street Art Streets we want to tell the stories of Deventer by using different forms of Street Art. This Street Art is created by regional, national and international artists and tells the stories about the past, present and future of Deventer.
The artists are always asked to first take the surroundings of the area into account. Based on the information about the place, the residents and the owners, they can start designing their work. An important condition is that the artworks are always placed on large visible walls in the municipality of Deventer. Street Art is temporary art, so it’s possible that after a few years the artwork will disappear, something which is inherent to this art form.
Street Art Streets connects seamlessly with the Deventer brand: authentic, innovative and a little bit stubborn. Street Art makes Deventer a more colourful city. Not only do we have a beautiful, historic city centre, but also a city with modern art forms. Old and new come together and the artworks tell the stories of Deventer.

Mural door JOHAN MOORMAN ter ere van 50 jarig bestaan SWvB
Ondernemerschap, groei, crisis, oorlog en slachtoffers: dit terrein maakte alles mee in de afgelopen eeuwen. Wat begon met de olie- en pelmolens van Noury en van der Lande in 1838 groeide uit tot een plek vol energie, innovatie en vernieuwing onder de naam S/park. Kunstenaar Johan Moorman bracht deze bewogen geschiedenis samen in zijn kleurrijke Street Art Streets mural.
Johan Moorman vindt inspiratie in retro-futuristische beelden, architectuur, muziek en technologische innovatie. In zijn uitgesproken illustratieve stijl leidt hij de kijker via de molens van Noury en van der Lande en het historische pand ‘De Drie Haringen’ naar de chemie van AkzoNobel (inmiddels Nouryon) naar de open deuren voor start-ups, studenten en onderzoekers van innovatiebroedplaats S/park.
De mural vormt een kleurrijke illustratie van de chemie aan de Zutphenseweg. Chemie tussen mensen, waarbij partijen met elkaar worden verbonden en vernieuwende geesten samenwerken aan chemische en technologische innovaties die ons klaarmaken voor de toekomst. De mural laat zien dat er op S/park spannende en interessante dingen gebeuren, waarbij de veiligheid van mens en milieu altijd voorop staat. De mural is mogelijk gemaakt door een gift in het kader van het 50-jarig bestaan van de Stichting Wesselings-Van Breemen.

Dit half tone portret door Egbert.EGD is een ode aan een pionier. Aan een man die tegen de stroom in vocht voor een bedrijventerrein in het Havenkwartier en daarmee een aanjager werd van de Deventer economie. Die man is de naamgever van deze straat: Mr H.F. de Boer.
De Boer was wethouder van 1913 tot 1923, een tijd dat Deventer een arme stad was. Ieder dubbeltje telde en lang niet iedereen zag de noodzaak van een bedrijventerrein. Het was vooral mr. H.F. de Boer die streed voor de totstandkoming van de havenwerken. Zijn idee: de overheid investeert in de infrastructuur en ondernemers bouwen voor eigen gebruik. Het bleek een zet die de bedrijvigheid in de stad flink zou verbeteren.
De geest van De Boer leeft nog steeds in het havengebied. Vanaf 2012 werd het havengebied nieuw leven in geblazen. Nu tot hippe, rauwe plek voor creatieve ondernemers en bewoners. De overheid investeerde in de infrastructuur, ondernemers en bewoners (ver)bouwen voor eigen gebruik.
Dankzij Egbert.EGD kijkt de oude wethouder tevreden toe. Ook al moet de kijker soms even knipperen met zijn ogen. Door het half tone effect is de muurschildering van dichtbij een lijnenspel, naarmate je meer afstand neemt, of een foto maakt vallen alle stukjes op hun plaats.

Wake Up Wall voor Canon van Nederland in Deventer
Deventer zou niet de stad zijn geworden zonder de samenwerkingskracht van het Hanzeverbond. En om jongeren dat op een creatieve manier te laten zien, ontwierp kunstenaar Hedy Tjin deze "Wake Up Wall". Ze maakte deze mural voor de nieuwe Canon van Nederland.
In de muurschildering lees je de tekst ‘Wij vermenigvuldigt de kracht van ik’. Een statement naar het oude Hanzeverbond tussen allerlei (binnen)havensteden in Noord-Europa. Op de schildering zie je ook een Koggeschip dat geladen of gelost wordt door twee mensen met zakken en tonnen, met op de achtergrond een stadsgezicht.
De Canon van Nederland laat jongeren kennismaken met de geschiedenis van ons land, vanuit verschillende invalshoeken. Met creatieve streetart worden jongeren gestimuleerd om na te denken en te discussiëren over de betekenis van onze geschiedenis. Hedy Tjin verwerkte de Hanzegschiedenis tot een kleurrijk kunstwerk met empowerment-statements die jongeren doet inzien dat zij zelf de regie hebben over hun toekomst. Met de lessen uit het verleden als wake up calls voor het heden. De murals ter ere van de Canon van Nederland zijn naast Deventer ook te zien in Amsterdam, Groningen en Nijmegen.

Dit pand aan de Scheepvaartstraat heeft alles wat Deventer uniek maakt. En de Rotterdamse illustrator en straatkunstenaar I AM EELCO bracht dit prachtig samen in deze mural, in opdracht van Street Art Streets en Creative Eventlocatie PUNT, die in het pand gevestigd zijn.
De muurschildering is een ode aan het karakteristieke Havenkwartier. Een plek die zich de afgelopen jaren ontwikkelde tot een creatieve broedplaats, waar horeca, ondernemen en wonen gecombineerd wordt met een nog werkzame binnenhaven. Deze specifieke Bodenloods stamt uit 1958 en fungeerde als loods waar stukgoed en pakketten werden verwerkt en via de binnenvaart werden vervoerd naar Amsterdam.
In de muurschildering brengt Eelco zowel de geschiedenis als de hedendaagse functie van de locatie terug, waarbij hij ruimte laat voor eigen interpretatie. Zo kan de vogel verwijzen naar de broedplaats die het Havenkwartier is en kan de jongen bij de boom verwijzen naar oude havenarbeiders of juist iemand die nu ontspant in het Havenkwartier. De dame naast de vos zou een schippersvrouw kunnen zijn die met smart wacht op de terugkeer van haar man. De kop koffie, de kat en de verschillende punten laten zich wat makkelijker duiden: een verwijzing naar de eigenwijze evenementlocatie die nu in het pand zit.

“75 jaar vrijheid vieren tijdens de Corona lock-down”
Deventer kunstenaar Will-Yoow (Wiljo Damstra-Rouwenhorst) ontwierp een nieuw vrijheidsmonument voor een onvergetelijke Bevrijdingsdag. Een Bevrijdingsdag die draaide om 75 jaar vrijheid in Nederland, maar ons ook wees op de kwetsbaarheid van vrijheid door de beklemmende coronapandemie.
Will-Yoow maakte twee duiven die samen het symbolische lint dat Deventer in zijn greep hield los maken en de weg naar vrijheid openen. De kleuren rood, wit, blauw en oranje symboliseren vaderlandsliefde die naadloos aansluit bij de viering van de bevrijding 75 jaar geleden. Het rode hart symboliseert de liefde voor de stad Deventer, maar ook het hart voor het leven en voor de zorg die zo belangrijk was voor onze maatschappij in coronajaar 2020.
Dit moderne monument werd georganiseerd door Street Art Streets ter ere van 75 jaar vrijheid en werd op 5 mei 2020 gepresenteerd door locoburgemeester en wethouder van Cultuur Carlo Verhaar.

Kunstenaar GOMAD gebruikte de onderdoorgang naar het Hof van Adwaita als canvas voor deze unieke muurschildering. In het kunstwerk staat de naamgever van het Hof, de dichter Adwaita, centraal. Hij wordt omgeven door flora en fauna die passen bij het Brahmanisme, een Indiase filosofie waardoor hij zich liet inspireren voor zijn gedichten.
GOMAD hield vast aan zijn unieke stijl, waarbij ogen, planten, dieren en organische kleurvormen een belangrijke rol spelen, maar kroop ook in het hoofd van Adwaita. Hij verdiepte zich in een tekst over de Hindoe-God Brahmâ. Brahmâ schiep een vrouw, waarop hij zelf verliefd werd. Zij probeerde aan zijn verliefde blikken te ontsnappen, maar telkens kreeg Brahmâ er een hoofd bij om haar te kunnen blijven zien.
Hij neemt de toeschouwer mee in het verhaal. De kijker ziet indringende ogen angstig naar het hofje kijken. Wat is er te zien in het Hof van Adwaita? Als kijker moet je wel een kijkje nemen. Eenmaal aangekomen op de binnenplaats kijkt het portret van J. Dèr Mouw (Adwaita) je tevreden aan.
Deze mural werd gemaakt in maart 2020. In een tijd waarin alles stil leekt te staan zagen thuiswerkende bewoners een kunstwerk voor hun neus ontstaan. Een lichtpuntje voor de bewoners, een mooiere entree voor het Hof van Adwaita en positieve energie voor de stad.

Project: #Spoorbrugtrap / Natuurpark Deventer IJsseloevers Artist: Danny Rumbl Locatie: De trap aan voetgangerskant spoorbrug Zwarte Pad/ spoorbrugtrap Date: Mei 2019 Mogelijk gemaakt door: Gemeente Deventer, Street Art Streets, Bestwerk “Spoorbrugtrap vol leven uit de Uiterwaarde!” Hoe illustreer je de continue spanning tussen natuur en recreatie aan de oevers van de IJssel? De Rotterdamse kunstenaar Danny Rumbl deed het op dit object namelijk de Spoorbrugtrap, op de zijden van de trap naar de Ossenwaard. Danny Rumbl illustreerde de unieke natuurwaarde van de Ossenwaard door gebruik te maken van twee bijzondere vogelsoorten die broeden in dit gebied. Aan de kant van Deventer zie je namelijk een geïllustreerde kwartelkoning (boven) en porseleinhoen (onder). De kleurrijke bloemen en planten zijn geïnspireerd op de flora rondom de trap en zorgen ervoor dat de muurschildering naadloos aansluit bij het mooie natuurgebied. Maar meer nog dan een ode aan de ecologie verbeeldt de kunstenaar de soms schurende verbinding tussen mens en natuur. Aan de zijde van De Worp schiet namelijk een haas (geïnspireerd op het logo van IJssellandschap) door de benen van een jonge man of vrouw die in roze korte broek door het gebied loopt. Dit zet de bezoekers en gebruikers hopelijk aan het denken, als ze het gebied in of uit lopen. Deze muurschildering is gemaakt in opdracht van de Gemeente Deventer als onderdeel van het ‘Natuurpark Deventer IJsseloevers’ georganiseerd door Street Art Streets.

“Arbeidersstad aan de IJssel 1250 jaar“
Het 1250-jarig bestaan van Deventer in 2018 was een uitgelezen kans om je te laten inspireren door het verleden, het heden en de toekomst van onze stad. Dat is precies wat de Rotterdamse illustrator en straatkunstenaar Joren Joshua deed voor deze mural.
De kunstenaar vertelt het verhaal van deze bijzondere locatie in het Sluiskwartier. Een voormalige molenmakerij die in de 19e eeuw de hoek vormde van de binnenhaven, inmiddels gedempt, en de oude vestinggracht. Een locatie waar de sluis een belangrijke poort vormde en waarnaast de Raambuurt zich ontpopte tot één van de eerste industriegebieden van Deventer.
Joren Joshua wil graag dat je in zijn werk ziet wat je zelf wilt zien. De ene kijker ziet een hommage aan ons verleden als havenstad, met twee havenarbeiders die druk in de weer zijn met vracht. De ander ziet het stempel van de industrie en de arbeiders in een oud stoomschip en een rood tandwiel. En de oplettende kijker herkent de kleuren die perfect bij de stad én haar verjaardag passen. De kleuren rood en wit van het wapen van Deventer en natuurlijk rood en geel, de kleuren van juweel, van voetbalclub Go Ahead Eagles.
