5-Minute Movie Review #7: Dunkirk. Director Christopher Nolan dives into his first fact based film about the evacuation of 400,000 allied troops from the town/beaches of Dunkirk. The story is portrayed in an original and creative way that has not been attempted before. From the opening scene you are immersed in 3 separate timelines that, when meshed together, give a picturesque telling of the collaborative efforts needed to overcome the German forces. Rather than focusing on character development, Nolan uses quick edits and edge of your seat intensity to depict a battle that would not have been won had one of the depicted timelines not done what they did. The mission goes well but as they return they find that something is hunting them. Nearly invisible, it blends in with the forest, taking trophies from the bodies of its victims as it goes along. 5-Minute Movie Review #11: The Graduate. What a wonderful time capsule. Not being old enough to grasp the entire "Swinging 60's" movement, I can't help but think this was pretty true to form to what was going on back then. Dustin Hoffman is of course great, but Ann Bancroft steals the movie, dominating every scene even when she's not in it. It must have been quite a risk for her to not only play an "older woman," especially in age conscious Hollywood, but also to play so much against "type." The music, the clothes, the houses all harken back to when America was discovering not every one lived like Ozzie and Harriet, and that a stiff martini could certainly loosen ones morals. 5-Minute Movie Review #10: Alien. In 1979 Ridley Scott directed a movie for the ages, Alien.  This is one of the finest science fiction films ever made. Everything is so carefully and expertly constructed to the point that repeated viewings are just as good as the first. Also, the atmosphere, along with the amazing sets, is real shocker and few movies have managed to create the same kind eerie feeling.  The story starts with the crew of the cargo vessel "Nostromo" waking up before schedule. They soon realize their on-board computer has detected life on a nearby planet and they go to investigate. One of them unwillingly brings back an...ALIEN (!) which soon becomes a very unwanted passenger. The introduction of the title creature in the famous chest-burster scene is a real jolter. This movie doesn’t try too hard and doesn’t take any cheap shots. It’s humorous, dramatic, revealing and heart warming to create a fully well rounded movie.
