Stripped Down Podcast

By Amnesty International Kenya

Stripped Down is Amnesty International Kenya’s podcast that aims to demystify human rights issues by having simple but powerful conversations.

The title, Stripped Down, has a double meaning. When human rights violations occur, victims are stripped of their dignity. The term Stripped Down also means dissecting an issue and reduce it to the essentials.

Episode 4 || Ile ya Health, Leadership, Youth and Vying as an Independent Candidate (With Njambi Koikai)

Episode 4 || Ile ya Health, Leadership, Youth and Vying as an Independent Candidate (With Njambi Koikai)

What is it running as a young woman and an independent candidate? We had to get the Fyah Mummah herself, Njambi Koikai, in the studio with our Stripped Down Podcast host, Joseph Styles, to discuss this, health, and so much more. Not trying to brag but it is a must-listen.

What are we Jamming to this week? After listening to this episode, we immediately had to put on "Power" by Muthoni Drummer Queen. We have another repeat offender on the playlist, but as we think about leadership, youth and the upcoming elections, let's remember the power that our vote and voices have. You can listen to the whole Jam of The Week playlist here!

Episode 3 || Ile Ya Amnesty In 2022 (With our ED Irũngũ Houghton)

In 2021 we took #AmnestyKwaGround as part of our new strategic framework! Our ED, Irũngũ Houghton,  joined Stripped Down podcast host Joseph Styles to talk about the new framework, #AmnestyKwaGround and Amnesty Kenya’s plans as the country heads into the general election.

What are we Jamming to this week? We thought you’d never ask! We are listening to “Tujiangalie” by Sauti Sol and Nyashinski. Yes, we know it’s a repeat offender on the playlist, but as we head into the elections, we need to reflect on the power of our vote and the type of leaders we want to see elected. You can listen to the whole Jam of The Week playlist here!

Episode 6 || Ile Ya Human Rights Day (With Li Fung)

Episode 6 || Ile Ya Human Rights Day (With Li Fung)

Could we have a Human Rights podcast without including an episode on Human Rights? It didn't seem right to us either. For Human Rights Day, we talk to Li Fung, the Senior Human Rights Advisor to the UN Resident Coordinator in Kenya, about Human Rights in a pandemic and the importance of commemorating Human Rights Day.  What are we Jamming to this week? We’re glad you asked! This week we love Redemption Song by Bob Marley & The Wailers. "Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery.  None but ourselves can free our minds. " Those lyrics ring true today as they did in 1980 when this song was released. Real quick, before you go. You can join Amnesty as a member here! Episode 5 || Ile Ya Privilege (With Bev and Dam)

Five minutes to listen to Bev and Dam didn't seem right to us, so this week they strip down their privilege and how it impacts their work in the Human Rights Movement.

What are we Jamming to this week? We’re glad you asked!

This week we're listening to Tujiangalie by Sauti Sol feat. Nyashinski.

When two Kenyan greats come together, this magnificence is the outcome. This song just forces you to introspect.

Episode 3 || Ile Ya Artivism (With Javan The Poet) - Bonus Episode

Episode 3 || Ile Ya Artivism (With Javan The Poet) - Bonus Episode

Art + Activism = Artivism

In this enlightening bonus episode, we sat down with Javan Ofula aka Javan The Poet from Dandora on his experience of mixing his art with his work as a human rights defender. Javan wears many hats as an activist,  artist, community leader, active member of the Dandora Community Justice Centre and representative of Embakasi North in the Youth Council.

Don't forget to check out Javan's work on YouTube here!

What are we Jamming to this week? We’re glad you asked!

This week we're throwing it back to Angalia Saa by Ukoo Flani. Do you guys remember this jam? It's a complete throwback by Ukoo Flani Mau Mau. Other than the amazing falsetto, the 12 year old song is dedicated to all the shujaas who fought for us during the first liberation. The 5 minute video that is mostly in black and white is almost like a snapshot of such critical moments and themes in our history. If you're Gen Z and you are listening to us wondering what, who?... Well, head over to youtube and check it out!

Episode 2 || Ile Ya Modern Day Mekatililis (With Rachael Mwikali and Wanjiru Wanjira)

Episode 2 || Ile Ya Modern Day Mekatililis (With Rachael Mwikali and Wanjiru Wanjira)

What is it like being a woman working in the human rights field? This week, Amnesty Board Member and Convener of the Coalition of Grassroots Human Rights Defenders, Rachael Mwikali and Wanjiru Wanjira, co-founder of the Mathare Social Justice Centre, strip-down being young women HRD’s.

What are we Jamming to this week? We’re glad you asked!

This week we're loving Power by Muthoni Drummer Queen.

“Wale wanafikiria sindiria ni weakness, you keep telling us it’s not the right time .” In her characteristic eccentric fashion, Muthoni Drummer Queen kills it in this jam.  Muthoni Drummer Queen dedicates this song to the many women who organize and resist oppression, break moulds and defy stereotypes, forge paths and occupy spaces. She says we will not let them erase you. If you’re all about girl power, this is one to head bob to for sure-check it out on youtube.

Episode 1: Ile Ya Mayouth (With Stevo, Toure and ZamaZama)

What is it like being a young human rights defender?

For our first episode we hear from Stevo from Mathare Social Justice Center, Toure from Mukuru Community Justice Center, and ZamaZama from Kiambiu Justice and Information Network on being young HRD's in Kenya.

For more of the work they do at the social justice centres, you can follow them on Twitter @MathareSJustice, @mukuru_cjc, @KiambiuJustice and @UhaiWetu.

What are we Jamming to this week? We’re glad you asked!

This week we are twisting our waists and bobbing our heads to this absolute African classic, A Luta Continua by Miriam Makeba. A luta continua –Portuguese for the struggle continues was the rallying cry of the FRELIMO movement during Mozambique’s war for independence. Popularized by Miriam Makeba, better known as Mama Africa, a South African singer, songwriter, actress, United Nations goodwill ambassador, and civil rights activist. The song was written for her by her daughter Bongi Makeba following a trip to Mozambique.
