Aaron means Mountain

Aaron means Mountain

In this episode I'm talking about a reintroduction and reimagining about how we view ourselves and the work we do.

Have you ever used a life metaphor for yourself? Do you know the origin of your name? I was reminded and felt inspired by mine recently so I'm inviting you to explore your own.

I also share a poem from the collection I'm writing during National Poetry Month called "Tomorrow Again".

Tomorrow Again

When tomorrow is
just another yesterday
we pace around the truth
buried beneath our feet

instead of digging under
the walled garden and
breaking new ground
on the other side of struggle

we hold ourselves stuck
with the story that bears repeating
we cuddle burdens to stay comfortable
repeat the words that cudgel us
into a seed on broken ground

when we place ourselves
at the source of fertility
we regenerate ourselves
rooted in the domain of a new season

leave yesterday
lean into tomorrow
long live today

What it means to move from weakness to STRENGTH

What it means to move from weakness to STRENGTH

A few weeks ago my friend Tony Sanders, an excellent content creator and podcaster, creator of 60 second stories, go follow him @tonyrsanders interviewed me about Resume Best Practices.

Really happy with how it turned out, go check out the show on his podcast and instagram.

But before we got into that he asked me about this show, Strong Com Podcast and this whole Strong Com movement and asked me a question I hadn't spent a lot of time on, to be honest

He asked me why strength?

Which is a great question.

So today I'm diving into that question a bit.

We're going to color in those lines a bit

Get clear on what strength is

Then I want to share a few things

One is our media landscape and why it's important for you to have STRENGTH in your Comms now

And the other is our cultural landscape and how we can have Stronger Communities during trying times

And the last is how you can move from weakness to strength through what I call STRONGVISION

Tashara Parker is Pursuing her Potential through her Passion for People

What an honor it was to have journalist, host, and news anchor Tashara Parker as a guest!

After 3 years of serving the East Texas community at CBS19, she recently announced that she has joined the team at WFAA in Dallas as their newest morning anchor and traffic reporter.

Our conversation starts with her current thoughts and feelings after receiving the news that October 28th will henceforth be known as Tashara Parker Day.

We also dive into the roots of her career and the skills and experiences that have shaped the person she is today.

Then we jump into the pillars of the podcast; communication, community and company.

We talk about the power of 1 on 1 connection, building meaningful relationship, sharing on social media, her favorite thing about East Texas, her motivations and influences, connecting with others, networking, and much, much more!

There's a bunch of info to tease out of this episode for anyone interested in strengthening their communication and community building skills, and especially for those considering a career in the news.

I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did and decide to follow Tashara on social media as she continues to impact the community she serves so passionately.

A Marketing Degree Is Not Enough - but you are

A Marketing Degree Is Not Enough - but you are

This past Thursday I had the honor of being a returning speaker at the annual UT Tyler Career Success Conference.

Dozens of local leaders and UT Tyler alumni spend a day networking with students and sharing personal experience that could help students experience similar career success.

This year I had the goal of connecting specifically with the next ( generation of marketers to help equip them with the skills necessary to become a valuable asset to the companies they apply to, the communities they hope to lead, and the profession as a whole.

This podcast is the full audio from my session of the day with all my “ums” edited out. :)

This talk covers a lot of ground so I’m probably going to follow this episode up with deeper dives into each of the power point slides in later episodes.

If this is your first visit to the “Strong Com” experience, welcome!

I’m here to help businesses get creative and creatives get business.

If you have any specific questions about anything in this talk or would like my input on something you’re working on, don’t hesitate to reach out via email or social @aarondunnworks.

One of my goals is to get 1,000 subscribers on YouTube before the end of the year.

If you want to help, check out my channel by clicking

If you haven’t subscribed the the Newsletter yet, you can do that here:

For those interested, here are the slides from my presentation:

Strong Com Q&A

Strong Com Q&A

It’s been a while since I’ve had the opportunity to record something and I felt like making something happen while I had the chance!

This is a Q&A episode that I recorded while going live on my Instagram. (@aarondunnworks)

I had a lot of fun doing this type of episode and might bring it back sometime!

Here are the questions I answer:

What are you doing when you feel the most present?

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome lately?

What made you start the podcast, what made you want to start?

What have you been reading lately?

What music are you listening to these days? (Electronic music recommends and my thoughts on NF & Chance the Rapper)

What adjectives do you hope describe you when you’re 75?

What is the next poetry slam or open mic you are doing?

Do you believe that giving makes you rich?

What inspires you?

What’s been your favorite part of the writing poetry/podcast journey?

What is your next big goal?

What’s your family tradition?

*Announced a slight shift to how podcast episodes will be produced and shared*

What are your favorite podcasts to listen to?

Do you have any tips on how to facilitate a good interview?

How to keep a guest on topic?

What kind of software/equipment do you use for recording the podcast?

If you could have any view from your bedroom window, what would it be?

This was a lot of fun and I hope you enjoy getting to know me a bit more through this episode.

If you enjoy the Strong Com Podcast I would greatly appreciate if you shared it with someone!

The Great Outdoors Episode

The Great Outdoors Episode

Creative work is easier to create and more effective with a process.

Businesses find success through efficient systems.

Because of this, over the past few weeks I’ve been recording and sharing podcasts on a regular schedule in a relatively structured format.

But there’s only so much rule following I can tolerate before I decide to deviate and experiment to see what could come from it.

This podcast is one such example.

My wife and I recently took a quick camping trip to Tyler State Park. It was our first time there and only second time camping, and we had a lot of fun. I’ve never considered myself an “outdoors man” as I am a guy who typically eats pizza with a fork but now that most of my days consist of temperature controlled office and knowledge work, I welcome any reason to get outside of my head and into my body.

We (eventually) set up the tent, hiked, weathered some light rain, got vandalized by raccoons, unplugged, napped, took a dip in the lake and enjoyed our time away from the city.

Inspired, I took some time to record the experience with a poem, which you can find below

I also recorded a reading of it and included it in this episode.

This podcast is different because I attempted to break away from the typical way I record and get a bit more creative with the audio experience I’m working to create for you. The audio quality varies a bit because of this, but it is still 100% listenable.

I also included two quick conversations (both 15 minutes each) with Fallen Outdoors and Prodigal Lures. These are two “outdoorsy” brands that I met at a recent East Texas Locals event at Gander Outdoors.

The Fallen Outdoors is a Veteran 501(c)(3) all volunteer organization established to facilitate hunting and fishing trips for veterans. We aim to connect Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors and Marines, with a network that will serve them locally and nationally.

If you’re a Veteran and would like to become a part of our community, please click
here.

Prodigal Lures is is a Christian based lure company focused on spreading the word of God through a unique line of fishing lures. Our lures are designed to help maximize your time in the water giving you an increased chance of catching fish.

Visit them online at their website or Facebook Page.

These conversations enhanced my appreciation for our planet and especially our region. Chelsey and I can’t wait to go camping again because of how beneficial it was to remove ourselves from our screens and information overload to simply soak in God’s green Earth.

I hope you find value in this podcast and discover a way to get outdoors and discover how mentally refreshing and beneficial it can be.

Email Subscriber Question:

Do you consider yourself “outdoorsy”?

What is one “rule” you could break that could get you outside the box?

Thanks for reading,

Aaron

P.S.

I’m working on some great stuff for the month of July! (Scheduling podcast conversations, an article on personal branding, an article on creative work, 2 videos)

Subscribe so you don’t miss it!

Hip Hop Heads - June 2019 Rap Recap w/ DJ Cicero

Hip Hop Heads - June 2019 Rap Recap w/ DJ Cicero

Originally streamed in the Hip Hop Heads Facebook Group on June 17th, my friend Chris Patton (DJ Cicero) and I had a chat about what’s been going on in hip hop for 2019 thus far.

We start the conversation with the impact of Nipsey Hussle’s life and untimely death, DJ Khaled & Tyler the Creator drama, and Kanye West’s Sunday Service.

Then we break into our top albums of the year so far at the time we recorded.

Albums that made our lists and our conversation:

2 Chainz - Rap or Go to the League

Yelawolf - Trunk Muzik 3

Bun B & Statik Selektah - TrillStatik

Denzel Curry - ZUU

Your Old Droog - It Wasn’t Even Close

Little Simz - Grey Area

Skepta - Ignorance is Bliss

Tee Grizzley - Scriptures

Tyler the Creator - IGOR

If you’re a hip hop fan, I hope you decide to join the Hip Hop Heads group! It’s pretty active and there is definitely someone there who has a similar taste as yourself.

Cicero and I will be back toward the end of the year to recap the year and cover our favorite albums that dropped after this episode, the XXL/DJ Booth Freshman list, our album of the year picks, Grammy nominations and any other breaking news that hits before 2020.

Be sure to check out Cicero’s newest EP on Spotify, Lumens by clicking here
