Stronger than Autoimmune

By Desiree Werland

As an autoimmune warrior myself, I understand living with autoimmunity isn't easy. You are not alone, this podcast is to give hope to living with a chronic illness. I will interview individuals living with autoimmune disease along with experts, and businesses to help provide knowledge, and hope. As a health coach, I understand there is no cure for autoimmune disease but creating small changes like diet, stress management, movement and more can influence on how we feel. Finding Peace with Chronic Illness: An Interview with Xenia Brandstetter

Finding Peace with Chronic Illness: An Interview with Xenia Brandstetter

In today's episode, I discuss finding peace and your true self in living with chronic illness or autoimmune disease with Xenia Brandstetter. She used to work in Finance until she fell ill in her mid-20s with multiple autoimmune diseases. She couldn't keep up with my job and my life, was bedridden for a while, and eventually decided to quit while focusing only on my recovery. During that time, she overshot and became obsessed with living a healthy lifestyle, struggling with depression and disordered eating. She was eventually able to turn it around and find balance, which is when true healing finally happened for me. She is now symptom-free and became a health coach because I want to support others who are going through the same thing & share my knowledge!

Would you like a chronic pain reset? An interview with Dr. Afton Hassett (S2, Epi. 63)

Would you like a chronic pain reset? An interview with Dr. Afton Hassett (S2, Epi. 63)

In this week's Stronger Than Autoimmune podcast episode, I discuss chronic pain with Dr. Afton Hassett. A subject that autoimmune warriors know all too well. Dr. Afton L. Hassett is an Associate Professor and Director of Pain and Opioid Research in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Michigan. She is a principal investigator at the Chronic Pain & Fatigue Research Center who has over $14M of research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Viewed as a leader in the field of chronic pain and resilience, she recently gave the Keynote address at the 2023 Pain Consortium Symposium on Advances in Pain Research for the NIH. While studying established treatments for chronic pain and developing new approaches is her passion, her frustration is that exciting research discoveries rarely make it to the people who could benefit the most. Thus, Afton’s mission was to write Chronic Pain Reset to bring evidence-based strategies from research and academic medical settings directly to people who live with chronic pain with the hope that they will gain new tools to lead more rewarding lives with less pain.

What's new with Type 1 Diabetes: An interview with Dr. Ake Lernmark (S.2, Epi. #50)

This week's podcast features Ake Lernmark, MD, PhD. His research interest in autoimmune type 1 diabetes dates back before his islet cell surface antibodies report in 1978. Which was followed by the first islet autoantigen, the 64K in 1982. He also discovered the genetic association between HLA-DQ and autoimmune diabetes. He helped develop the “Golden Standard” which is used to detect newborns for diabetes risk and other diseases. His Swedish laboratory is the largest TEDDY location which screened and followed newborns at increased genetic risk for type 1 diabetes and celiac disease. His personal interest is to uncover the mechanisms that allow prolonged infections and the immune response to deviate to autoimmunity. I brought him on the show to share what is next in type one diabetes research. Sex and Chronic Illness

Sex and Chronic Illness

Warning: This today’s episode (number 31) contains adult sexual content that may not be suitable for some audiences and is inappropriate for children. The content is intended for mature audiences only.

My guest today is Elle. She is a chronic illness warrior, sex coach and educator.  For the last 3 years, she had taught and presented, and written for organizations including Mental Health America and the Endometriosis Foundation of America. She is currently completing my Masters in Social Work with a focus on relationships and sexuality. I brought her on the show to discuss sex with chronic illness. My intention for this episode like all of my episodes is to bring hope to chronic illness suffers especially the topics that are less spoken about like making whoopie. If you are needing more help in the bedroom please reach out to Elle at @s3xandchronicillness . Just a reminder there is a giveaway for the lube. Go to my IG @desireewerland and enter the giveaway and share the link with others.

As a bonus, Elle wanted to do a shout out to Come as You Are” by Emily Nagoski Book. The book is about the way stress impact our sex drive and it's an amazing resource for people who are looking to understand their changes in desire.

Make a difference with Imyoo

In this week's podcast, I speak to Emily Harari and Keyla Caba in this week's episode. Emily is the Engagement and Outreach Lead at ImYoo. Keyla Caba is a model, IBD warrior, Advocate, and Imyoo champion. ImYoo is a company trying to connect the dots on autoimmunity. Their tech looks at gene expression from samples that patients collect themselves at home. They are working to democratize research by sourcing ideas from the patient community. They collaborate with doctors to make research clinically actionable and making research more transparent by posting budget and project updates.

Remember anyone can help the research happen in record time. Anyone with RA or IBD can sign up to participate at zero cost. ImYoo is offering a more transparent way of doing research. You can finally make a donation to the research and see exactly where it's going, because we post our budget upfront on Kernls. If you want to learn more or interested in participating in the research please check out the links.

Thank you for listening, I am wondering if you interested in trying hypnotherapy or Nano Vi but first as Dr Debbie said, before starting any supplements or additional interventions: start at the beginning check and notice how much sleep are you getting? Is it quality sleep? What about your water intake? Are you able to go to the restroom. If you are beyond that or interested in Dr Debbie's new program please check out her website.
