FLY HIGHER: Unleashing Resilience & Courage with Combat Pilot Sarah Furness - The Leadership Lounge

FLY HIGHER: Unleashing Resilience & Courage with Combat Pilot Sarah Furness - The Leadership Lounge

In this episode of The Leadership Lounge, we speak to Sarah Furness.

After graduating from Cambridge University, Sarah followed her dream to become a combat helicopter pilot in the RAF. As a Squadron Leader she led on operational combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and she was the first female helicopter pilot to fly and lead UK Special Forces missions in Iraq. During her experiences both at home and at war, she made two important discoveries;

- resilience and performance under pressure is NOT instinctive

- BUT humans have an extraordinary ability to thrive and even excel under pressure when they know how.

She now has ONE mission. To share the secret to outstanding resilience, performance and courage “under fire”.

Sarah is the No1 Best Selling author of FLY HIGHER - train your mind to feel as strong as you look. All of her mental training techniques are backed by science and proven in combat. She is fluent in “alpha male” and whilst she takes her work seriously, she doesn’t take herself too seriously. She has an 8 year old son who she adores and who inspires her every day.

Dive Deep: From Competitive Swimmer to Navy Diver with Rob Hinton - The Leadership Lounge

Dive Deep: From Competitive Swimmer to Navy Diver with Rob Hinton - The Leadership Lounge

In this episode of The Leadership Lounge, we Dive Deep: From Competitive Swimmer to Navy Diver with Rob Hinton.

The average body is 60% water, in the case of Rob, this is unsubstantiated - as he has been swimming competitively since age 4.

On a rugby trip to South Africa, he found his love of diving and started his diving career there in 1999.

Always one for a challenge, Rob entered the Royal Navy as a direct entry Clearance Diver candidate. Of the 29 candidates on his Aptitude only 3 passed, Rob being one of them, thankfully.

Rob then went on to have a successful career, carrying out mine clearance and bomb disposal on sea and land. Serving in: Fleet Diving Unit 2, HMS Inverness and Northern Diving Group.

After the Royal Navy, Rob dived commercially for 14 years working in oil & gas all over the world.

Along with being a founder of Hold Fast, Rob was an assistant instructor for military rebreather courses - working across the continents.

Apparently, Rob has a sense of humour!

UK'S No. 1 Motivational Business Speaker Brad Burton - The Leadership Lounge

UK'S No. 1 Motivational Business Speaker Brad Burton - The Leadership Lounge

In this episode of The Leadership Lounge, I speak to the UK'S No. 1 Motivational speaker Brad Burton.

Speeches that inspire action, by someone who has actually walked the walk.

Yes, Brad is a motivational speaker - but he was a shrewd businessman first. He's been there, done it, got the t-shirt and his resume speaks for itself.

He's the highest-rated motivational business author on Amazon. The UK's No.1 Motivational Business speaker. The author of 4 best-selling books. The founder of the largest business network in the UK.

In 2022, Brad sold his business, after 16 years at the top of the networking scene. But Brad's life wasn't always rainbows and butterflies. As a kid, he grew up on a council estate. Had no qualifications. Spent years on benefits. By 31 he was in £25,000 worth of personal debt and delivering pizza.

How did he go from 31-year-old pizza delivery man to the distinguished businessman he is today?

Mindset. He changed his life with his mindset.

Now, he helps global organisations, CEOs and their teams to do it at the highest level.

He's humble. Hilarious. Human. But more importantly, he's a specialist at using the lessons from his life to move audiences.

Renowned across the UK for his unconventional presentation style. Brad is unlike anything you've ever seen or heard before.

He is one of the most powerful speakers you'll ever have the pleasure of watching.

Inspired to take action. That's the Brad Burton effect.

Podcast - Episode 122 - Paul Minter - Founder of Charity helping Veterans to improve mental health

On this week's episode of #Leadership - What's on your mind? I speak to Paul Minter.

Born and brought up in East London.

Paul Joined the Army, The Household Cavalry Regiment at 16. Served for 18 years. Got to the rank of Staff Sargent. Served with both Princes William and Harry. Joined a specialised unit called The Brigade Reconnaissance Regiment. Completed 5 front line tours, one in Iraq and four in Afghanistan. I have been blown up twice, once by Rocket Propelled Grenades in an ambush where less than half (3) of us survived by fighting our way out and another time by an Improvised Explosive Device. I have been awarded a bravery award for my actions in Afghanistan (Mention in Dispatchers). I suffered very badly with paranoia, anxiety and depression (PTSD) after my 4th tour. A few years later it eventually caught up with me and was forced to seek help. After realising it was not the right help for me and loosing several friends to suicide, I took myself away and learnt multiple holistic methods I could implement in my day to day life to improve my mental wellbeing. I then started helping dozens more, with great success. Eventually I left the Army in Nov 2020, to set up a charity to help more on grander scale. Along with three other veterans we set up Head Up Charity and are in a two year fundraising and brand awareness phase to create a 7-day residential retreat where anyone in the Armed Forces and veterans can go to learn multiple methods to improve their Mental Health.

Please see video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsbYt1yNHBA

As part of letting people know who we are we are all doing big challenges and I recently finished mine. 5,000 mile record breaking run around the coastlines of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Isle of Wight and the Isle of Man. I done this running 6 days a week for 7 months. Staying with different people every day, carrying a 10kg bag with all my stuff in and averaging 30 miles a day. Over 700 people ran with me, and thousands supported me in some way. I achieved dozens of national media platform attention and I have won awards including the Pride of Britain award, increasing the attention of our cause.

Podcast - Episode 119 - Mark Stanton - Leadership Coach and former Police Officer

Podcast - Episode 119 - Mark Stanton - Leadership Coach and former Police Officer

On this week's episode of #Leadership -  What's on your mind? I speak to Mark Stanton.

Mark is an authentic, open and engaging leadership coach and mentor.  His aim is to help strengthen, support and enhance the potential of everyone he works with. As a former police officer who served for three decades with both West Midlands and Merseyside Police, achieving the rank of Chief Superintendent, he understands the challenges and impact that senior leadership can have in operational, business and personal terms.

Mark’s ethos is that true leadership starts with yourself, but to get to know who you actually are can be a voyage of exploration, challenge and sometimes an emotional roller coaster. As head of department for over 500 people he oversaw transformational change programmes saving £millions whilst ensuring that the people elements of change were front and centre of all he did – whether this was his own team or wider stakeholder groups. Having operated at the heart of complex and challenging operational environments including armed policing and riot situations Mark knows how to challenge and be challenged on his own views. He is known for applying critical thinking and positively disrupting the way things are done.

Mark is open, honest and easy to relate to. He will engage and inspire on a human-to-human level. Mark believes in justice and fairness and he brings all of these qualities into his sessions. Mark is a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership & Management.

Podcast - Episode 118 - Kerryn Price - 14 years in the NHS

On this week's episode of #Leadership -  What's on your mind? I speak to Kerryn Price.

"Hi, my name is Kerryn Price, I currently work in the charity sector as an Internal Auditor & Risk Manager.  Prior to this role I worked in the NHS for 14 years in various roles within Clinical Governance and Lloyds Banking Group before this for 7 years.  My leadership journey started when I was working for Lloyds Banking Group, however I didn’t appreciate this at the time; mainly because ‘leadership’ wasn’t known in the same way as is it now and the learning was not there in the same way. I have grown so much in recent years whilst working for the NHS and have felt my leadership journey go from strength to strength particularly since graduating from Lancaster University in December 2021 having completed a Msc in Senior Leadership. I am very grateful for the experiences I have had (good and bad!) and look forward to continuing to learn and grow as I progress through my career."

Podcast - Episode 114 - Jim Wheat - Strategic Brand Development Specialist & Contemporary Creative

On today's episode of #Leadership - What's on your mind? I speak to Jim Wheat.

Wheat was educated in Chester & Wrexham, where he studied Civil Engineering before pursuing a Master’s Degree in California. Moving to Dubai in 2002, Wheat was influenced by the rich culture and heritage of the Emirates combined with the energy of money in the contemporary atmosphere funding the growth of Dubai in the early 2000s. He boldly  explored both sides of the coin within the commercial world of Brand, Sponsorship and Art from Construction workers labour camps to the Golf and leisure facilities in the Middle East after a particularly testing time in 2009. Now thriving on collaborating with and helping develop a rich variety of authentic brands, charitable causes andcommunities Wheat’s creation and development of his unique model of Engage : Create : Facilitate in a systematic yet free-flowing approach that he has lived and breathed for over a decade. His shift of focus came following an unexpected lightbulb moment during his community engagement programme at H.M.P Berwyn, Wrexham where he realised the value of self-worth applies to others aswell as himself. This epiphany from ‘ME’ to ‘WE’ has enabled him to harness his  talents and share with others the skills he has learned throughout his career.  Wheat now primarily focuses on developing not only his own legacy through his body of work but with brand partnersthrough creative workshops with groups, sports associations, corporate enterprises and communities helping  Stakeholders form, clarify and ultimately achieve their commercial goals. This is then often interpreted in a unique contemporary way whilst ensuring a duty of care within wider reaching inclusive communities. With this solid  platform in place more meaningful, measured and relevant Marketing campaigns with high impact content creation and engagement programs following on. The Metaverse arrived at the perfect time – it’s time to humanize that magical space as old Artworks are now brought to life as physical serves digital and vice-versa.

In this week's episode of #Leadership - What's on your mind? I speak to Mark Hunter.

Mark Hunter is a triple Olympian who has had three different experiences, the good-winning gold, the ugly winning silver, and the bad - coming last!

He is a warm, honest and articulate speaker who brings a story of success and, more importantly, an awareness of what it takes to achieve. Sacrifice, failure, hard work, determination, and a brutal diet contribute to Mark’s remarkable story.

He offers his account of his career and achievements with humor that contrasts sharply with his vivid recollections of the moments when he wondered if he could, or should, continue chasing his dream.

What kept him going? Who helped along the way, and how? What made him continue to train, and how did he maintain focus through numerous setbacks? How did it feel to experience the sweet taste of success finally?

Mark is able to use his experiences and learning to answer these questions, and many more, with ease and charm, helping audiences learn from his experiences and take inspiration from them.

Key themes – teamwork, leadership, dealing with setbacks, goal setting.

Podcast - Episode 94 - Ian Rose - Resilience Coach & Double Paralympic Medallist

Podcast - Episode 94 - Ian Rose - Resilience Coach & Double Paralympic Medallist

On this weeks episode of #Leadership - What's on your mind? I speak to Ian Rose.

Through workshops, presentations and coaching, Ian helps individuals & teams to build and stay resilient. In this changing world building both individual and company resilience is key and helping to develop coping strategies is where Ian shines.

Born in 1972, Ian contracted eye cancer (retinablastoma) as a baby, losing his left eye and most of the sight in his right. Following many operations, Ian was left with an indent on the right side of his face. He also had to wear some pretty thick glasses to help his vision.

By the age of 7, Ian’s parents realised that he needed help to improve his self-esteem as he was coming home from school in tears some afternoons from being teased about the way he looked. Little did they know how much their next step for him would impact his life.

Deciding to introduce Ian to the sport of Judo, his parents took him to Micklefield Judo Club. The two coaches there – Ron Cleere and John Oke – warmly accepted him into the club and treated him exactly the same as all the other members, with no special treatment because of his eyes.

From then on, Judo became a big part of Ian’s life. Within three months the teasing he received about his looks stopped, because he now had a new confidence and was able to just ignore it.  Ian was not a natural at Judo, taking two years to win his first medal, but he worked very hard in training and had a passion for success. Over time Ian continued to improve, receiving his first International selection in 1989 whilst still in his last year of secondary school.

Competing in the European Visually Impaired Championships was a dream come true, and the beginning of an international sporting career that would see him travel the world, winning two Paralympic medals, as well as medals in the World Championships and the European Championships.

Competing in five Paralympic Games, Ian was on course to represent ParalympicsGB at his sixth Games in London. But then he sustained an injury during training, so he called it a day, ending an International career spanning 22 years at the top. This was in 2011; since then he has concentrated on the next chapter in his life – helping others to find the best in themselves and progress to success.

Ian couldn’t have achieved any of this without the forward thinking of his parents, his coaches, and the support of his wife, Debbie, and their two kids, Leah and Jordyn.

Sporting Achievements

2008 – Beijing Paralympics - 9th

2004 – Athens Paralympics - Silver medallist

2000 – Sydney Paralympics - 5th

1996 – Atlanta Paralympics - Bronze medallist

Podcast - Episode 92 - Fran Hogan - ‘The Simpler Life’ contributor and Engaging Project Manager

Podcast - Episode 92 - Fran Hogan - ‘The Simpler Life’ contributor and Engaging Project Manager

On this weeks episode of #Leadership - What's on your mind? I spoke to Fran Hogan.

Off grid Channel 4 ‘The Simpler Life’ contributor and Engaging Project Manager

Having worked in a corporate software implementation environment for over a decade, a fast faced environment with 24/7 multiple methods of communication centred around technology, Fran was mindful of the impact on her physical and mental health.

‘Busy being busy’ habits and the need to succeed both personally and professionally were evaluated over a course of 4.5 months ‘off grid’ living without technology, electricity and distractions from the outside world.

Focus on community and ‘a simpler life’ under the review of psychologists whilst maintaining a 40 acre farm alongside other volunteers and joined by an Amish family from Ohio replaced the fast paced treadmill of the zoom call, Teams chat, busy inbox world Fran had become accustomed too.

From podding peas to joining our podcast, we hear about Fran’s view on Leadership and whether her leadership experiences and learnings helped her both before and after her stripped back Summer.
