A simple mistake at an indoor climbing gym sentenced 28-year-old Robby to a year in a wheelchair, shattering his aspirations of becoming a mountaineer. In the months that followed, Robby faced depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts and a complete loss of his sense of identity.  

About the author (2020) Robby Kojetin lives in Johannesburg, South Africa and is a high-altitude adventurer. Since his accident in 2006, which resulted in him breaking both of his ankles, he has gone on to become one of only a handful of people to have stood on top of the world's highest mountain, Mount Everest. He has also climbed Kilimanjaro nine times, completed the Ironman triathlon, and scaled five of the Seven Summits. Known as an inspirational and engaging speaker on stage, he presents on the topics of failure, self-doubt and persisting against all odds, in the hope of inspiring people of all ages and backgrounds facing the daunting mountains and obstacles in their lives. Marshy Nel is the head of IT at St. Stithians College in Johannesburg. After taking an academic break for 20 years she has gone back into studying part time and realised she needs to make time to read and process information with check lists that help her plan what she needs to do.

Along the way she enlisted “study buddies” who she could soundboard and collaborate with. These relationships were encouraging and they student group set up WhatsApp groups which became very useful, especially in lockdowns - even the lecturers joined in and the students were even graded on their interaction with each other in these groups.

In her honours she did 4 modules per year and is now specialising in computer integrated education. The impact of COVID has provided a rich source of data and she hopes to develop new theories about the future of technology in education. Even though she didn't enjoy learning about research methods, now she sees the importance of having structure and discipline in her research, and which she will need in her upcoming masters. She credits much of her success to a supportive husband; “Yes we did it” he exclaimed when Marshy heard she had completed her honours. Marshy believes students need structure, and should work on specific things on certain days - stick to what works for you.

An email from her manager congratulating Natasha was the highlight of her part time student journey. Her 24 distinctions earned her some praise and she felt great that her hard work was inspiring other people. "That made it all worth it" and she advises people to "be brave" and not measure yourself against other people. You might not know what it looks like, don't think about it and worry what could go wrong, rather set up goals, get lists going and then tackle them decisively. The most important decision is in your head to get things done - jump in and do something, it doesn't have to be major goals. She found that in any endeavour its the small steps and "show up every day" - eventually you will look back and realise how much you can accomplish.

She wanted to do psychology and communication to get extra skills and support her career relationships. In the first semester she had no idea how to plan and get her work done but eventually got into it and found her rhythm. She was originally nervous to fit the extra work into her busy social life, kids and home life, but took it on and eventually succeeded. She has learnt to focus a lot on communication which has helped her career extensively because of the range of people she works with. Natasha loves learning and teaching - she's also learnt how to see other people's points of views, especially having the psychology training. The diversity of views in her broader team of 400 people is significant and doing part time studying has really helped her.

She has learnt to slow down and listen to people so that she can make a connection. Her internal journey meant that she rediscovered people around her and took her relationships to the next level. There was a lot of collaboration with fellow students but most of the modules were 6 month based with dozens of assignments that required her to put her head down and be committed to get the work done. A lot of the subject matter on psychology she related to very well and often did extra research on topics that interested her, especially Freud and even modern day thinkers like Mel Robbins who wrote "The 5 Second Rule". Now she's studying Spanish on Duo Lingo and NLP on Udemy!

Rehana Shaik is a successful and motivated business executive who has added a part time MBA to her busy life. Find out how she does it in this episode. She believes planning is key, don't over commit even through you start with all this energy. Her advice for students starting out would be "ride the novelty wave as far as you can". Despite being a perfectionist she eventually got to the point where stopped aiming for a distinction, her goal became just to get her studies done. For people staring their MBAs she suggests you write down the few things that made you decide to do it in the first place. Keep this list close so that when you lose the motivation and you need that little bit to get you through you can remind yourself why you did it.

Rehana also emphasized having good relationships with other students and has benefitted from working well within her cohort. She explained how they covered the core modules in the first year; strategy, economics, accounting as well as operations, technology management and organisational development. The subject that stood out the most for her was business in society and collective action. She learned the power of the collective and why people behave in certain ways. This module helped her by "getting inside the minds of people" which is critical in her current executive role. A powerful part of our conversation was when Rehana spoke about women empowerment and and the impact they can have on the world. Rehana believes you can be the exec, leader, mum and more!! 

Rehana provided some insight to her daily life and practical tips about juggling work, family and studies. She admits she is not a morning person but gets the kids off to school then switches gears into her career. In the evening she takes a break and has quality family time and then shifts into her studies. She is grateful to have enlisted people to support her and the household, plus she has a very supportive husband who "picks up the slack".
