Engaging Older Youth Digitally
In this episode of The Sunrise Side of the Street, Vince and Kat are joined by Sunrise’s High School Coordinator and co-chair of the Older Youth Remote Programming Committee, Brianna Morales, and will be talking about ways to engage with Older Youth, and how to continue to support their College and Career exploration.
Some Older Youth Engagement Tips to take away from this episode:
Engaging older youth is something that can be challenging even in person, and many youth have big responsibilities that extend past the school day. Programming needs to be valuable to them, both in time, and content. This means tailoring programming to meet their needs, and creating safe spaces for youth to fail, grow, and explore who they are.
Some examples of how we do this include:
- Paid Student Incentives through PYN.
- Social and Emotional Support, creation of safety plans and consistent communication.
- Presenting program opportunities on multiple platforms: SPHS Instagram and Instagram LIVE and google classroom.
- Tailor programming to student interests, needs and growth. Providing schedules, and topics to students in advance and at varied time slots.
- Individual Check-ins, phone calls, emails, and other forms of direct communication.

Staying Mindful in the Madness
- Mindfulness is 1 tool among many to help us stay as well as we can.
- Mindfulness is a strategy to help you get into the thinking/ logical part of your brain when you feel hijacked by emotion or instinct.
- Mindfulness is a practice. Like anything else you practice (sports, instrument, etc.) you need to build up stamina before you do the intense stuff. It can be harmful to attempt certain “mindful” things in a moment of crisis if you’ve never tried it before.
- Trust and safety need to be established to safely practice mindfulness. This may be trust that you won’t be interrupted, or feeling safe in your own body.
- Self-care is a big part of building safety and trust within our own minds and bodies.
- Regulation is necessary to practice mindfulness. Sometimes we may want to build up our self-regulation before diving into a mindfulness practice. Starting with somatic awareness first can be a good place to start. Bottom up is another way to think about it; start with activities to regulate the brainstem, then the midbrain, then the cortex
