Superhero Cinephiles

By Perry Constantine and Derrick Ferguson (Host Emeritus)

Author and comic book fan Perry Constantine is your guide into the world of superhero film and TV! In each episode, Perry and a guest tackle a different movie or TV show and go into detail about what works and what doesn't, trying to focus on the stuff they enjoy as opposed to ranting about the stuff they hate.

Ant-Man

Ant-Man

This week, Perry is joined by video editor and writer Eddie Thomson of Why We Watch to discuss 2015's Ant-Man! We discuss the long road this movie took to getting made, from Edgar Wright's long involvement in the project, switching over to Adam McKay and eventually landing in the hands of Peyton Reed. We also talk about how the heist film aspect helps set this apart from the rest of the MCU and why not every movie needs to end in some world-ending threat.

Visit Why We Watch for more on Eddie's work.

Spider-Man: No Way Home

Spider-Man: No Way Home

SPOILER ALERT: This episode includes spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home. If you haven't seen it and don't want to be spoiled, please make sure you watch the movie before listening to this episode.

Comic writer and novelist Morgan Quaid makes his debut on the show to discuss the live-action version of Spider-Verse with Spider-Man: No Way Home. We talk about the wonderful cast, the thrill of seeing the three live-action Spider-Men onscreen together, and then get into some of the story problems the performances do a great job of covering up.

Bloodshot

Bloodshot

Bloodshot was supposed to be the start of a shared Valiant universe, but it ended up being mostly overshadowed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Comic book investor Andrew Davis and host of the Pop Anime Podcast joins to discuss what was supposed to be Valiant's answer to Iron Man, but instead just turned into a pretty generic and forgettable Vin Diesel action flick.

Visit Pop Anime Podcast for more on Andrew.

The Superhero in Love

The Superhero in Love

We're switching gears this week for another episode focused not on a movie, but a topic related to superheroes—and that's the trope of superheroes in love. Y.M. Nelson, romance author and host of The Nerdy Romantics Podcast, is the guest this week to talk about some of our favorite superhero romances, some of the tropes of romance in superhero stories—both the good and the bad—and how these compare to other, non-superhero romance stories.

RoboCop (1987)

RoboCop (1987)

In the 101st episode, Perry welcomes new guest Shane Rogers of the Midnight Facts for Insomniacs podcast to talk about Paul Verhoeven's groundbreaking RoboCop! We discuss the satirical nature of the film and how relevant it still is 35 years after its release, how well most of the effects hold up, some of the great performances including Peter Weller and Kurtwood Smith, and we also talk a bit about the remake and some of the behind-the-scenes stuff. Also, we answer the question: is this really a superhero movie or not?

Justice League of America (1997)

Justice League of America (1997)

There are many bad movies that Perry has watched for this show and come away with something positive to say. That's not the case with today's pick. Will Short of the Days Past Tooncast (and an old friend from Perry and Derrick's fanfic days) comes on to discuss CBS' failed 1997 Justice League of America pilot. And whether you're a Snyder fan or a Snyder hater, we can all agree that this is the absolute worst Justice League adaptation to date.

Also a reminder, the next episode is big #100. For the hundredth episode, I’d like to hear from the listeners. Please submit any questions about the show or superhero cinema, comments, your favorite moments or episodes of the show to date, things you’d like to see on the show in the future, or anything else related to superhero movies and TV. Spider-Man 3

Spider-Man 3

Anthony Desiato of the Digging For Kryptonite podcast is the guest in this episode to discuss the much-maligned Spider-Man 3. Though it's got definite issues, both he and Perry have found aspects of it that turned out better than expected in retrospect. Especially when the slightly altered Editor's Cut is taken into consideration.
