Mental Health in Professional Yachting, Webinar with Colin Squire, and an online support network with ISWAN
“An Hour with Colin Squire” , with a large group of captains and yachting professionals was to discuss mental health issues among yacht crew and also raise (which was achieved) enough money to create a yacht-specific portal for ISWAN (International Seafarers Welfare Assistance Network) to provide online access to free mental health information and support, www.yachtcrewhelp.org.  Some of the discussions and guests included: : Caitlin Vaughan of ISWAN. “We exist to promote the welfare of seafarers worldwide,”……”crew didn’t know where to go when they needed support. So what can we do first? Provide access to support.”  Capt. Mike Mclean of S/Y Andromeda :“How you do it is by making it an everyday topic,” he said, quoting Rumi: “Yesterday, I was clever so I wanted to change the world. Today, I am wise so I am changing myself.” “We create that in how we communicate with each other, how we interact with each other, and how we resolve conflict.” Yachting is trying to implement the same sort of Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) that the corporate world has offered its employees for decades. Tony Nicholson of MedAire.: “It’s unusual now for corporations not to have an EAP, particularly if they have employees traveling overseas. It leads to a happier workforce, less absenteeism, and more productivity.” With Capt. Rafael Cervantes Mataix,  and also as a second host was Capt. O’Shannassy.  “This investment in the start is to help crew understand the environment is valuable,” he said. “Substance abuse is not the cause; it’s the result, hence the need for access to support. It’s an investment in crew.” The portal, “Yacht Crew Help” will offer 24/7 live support in multiple languages through various modes including computer and phone to help yacht crew navigating the stresses and pressures of yachting, to help families of crew dealing with issues, to help captains deal with emergencies or handle mental health issues, and provide wellness tools for all crew. Dr. Andy Lewis talks with SuperYacht Radio about his conservation work with the Coral Reef Foundation in Australia
An interview with Dr. Andy Lewis about the conservation work with the Coral Reef Foundation in Australia and his work with the indigenous people of Papua and young Melanesian women. Andy is one of the most skilled and widely  traveled ecotourism professionals in the Indo-Pacific region, with a  strong background in small ship adventure cruising. He has managed the  ecotourism activities aboard the luxury vessel True North for  the last decade, exploring and delivering outstanding guest experiences  across a wide variety of tropical locations, from the Rowley Shoals to  the Kimberley and Great Barrier Reef in Australia; Komodo, Raja Ampat,  and West Papua in Indonesia; the Bismarck Sea and Louisiade Archipelago  in PNG, and the Western Province of Solomon Islands. Andy has a PhD in  coral reef ecology from James Cook University and has extensive  experience in scuba diving, surfing and kiteboarding in tropical  locations. An expert underwater photographer and engaging public  speaker, Andy’s passion for the reefs, islands and people of the  South-Pacific is tangible, and drives the development of the Coral Sea  Foundation as a platform for delivering his vision for sustainable reef  management and the ultimate marine ecotourism experience. An important aspect of his mission strategy involves selecting  intelligent and determined young Melanesian women and training them in  conservation theory, scuba diving and marine biology survey techniques  so they have the skills to communicate the need for marine reserves to  their local communities and are able to identify areas suitable for  marine protected areas on their own coral reefs.
