In a nutshell, the game is about getting our pups mildly excited and then ask for a calm behavior ( sit, touch, look, or down) before resuming play again. This helps prevent play from escalating into frenzied/frantic biting and helps your pup learn that calm behaviors get more attention. Bad Blood Between Dogs with Katie Sipple of Wise Mind Canine Part 2

Bad Blood Between Dogs with Katie Sipple of Wise Mind Canine Part 2

In Part 2 Katie tells us more about her free resources for breeders and new puppy owners to help dogs hit it off (in a good way) and dog fight triage when you don't. We also discuss the importance of patience and management when helping your puppy and your resident dog form a strong bond and how to flex the control you have over your dog's relationships to everyone's benefit. If you have more than one dog are a professional who works with multi dog owners, or plan to in the future, these two episodes are for you! About Katie Sipple IAABC-ADT Katie Sipple is an Accredited Dog Trainer through the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, a graduate of the Aggression in Dogs Master Course and holds a B.Sc. in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign. She owns Wise Mind Canine, where her focus is helping multi dog households live harmoniously. Most of her clients are dealing with complex aggression cases involving 2 or more dogs in their home. If she could make one wish, it would be to teach more people how to properly introduce dogs and manage multi dog households BEFORE aggression strikes. Until then, she deeply enjoys untangling difficult behavioral puzzles with multiple dogs so that her clients and their dogs can thrive again. Katie lives with her 2 German Shepherds (Phoenix and Fisher) and her Border Collie/Chinese Shar Pei mix (Zeke) in the west suburbs of Chicago. Together they enjoy training, getting out in nature, and many a lazy weekend spent in each other’s company. When she’s not training dogs Katie is a passionate advocate for disability and mental health awareness, as she lives her life with disabling PTSD, Multiple Sclerosis, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, and more. Wise Mind Canine allows her to do what she loves alongside disabling medical challenges and she hopes that openness will encourage others to realize their own potential and follow their dreams.  MDH 101 Affiliate Program For Breeders Shelters and Rescues: https://wisemindcanine.com/mdh101affiliateprogram/  MDH 101 Course: https://wisemindcanine.com/about-mdh101-dog-dog-introductions-and-relationship-building-course/  MDH 100: Managing Dogs at Odds ($30 Course for Multi Dog Households in Crisis) https://wisemindcanine.com/managing-dogs-at-odds/  The Dog Fight Rehab Program: Private Training Multi Dog Households Experiencing Aggression:  https://wisemindcanine.com/dog-fight-rehab/  Wise Mind Canine Website and Social Media: www.wisemindcanine.com www.facebook.com/WiseMindCanine https://www.instagram.com/wisemindcanine/  Free Resources:  Dog and Puppy Introduction Survival Guide: https://wisemindcanine.com/blog/the-dog-and-puppy-introduction-survival-guide/  10 Dog Introduction Mistakes:  https://wisemindcanine.com/blog/10-big-dog-introduction-mistakes/  Dog Fight Behavior Triage Blog Series:  https://wisemindcanine.com/blog/dog-fight-behavior-triage-blog-series/  Preparing Your Current Dog For a Puppy Graphic Series:  https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.238587838516818&type=3 Barriers in Dog-Dog Introductions Graphic Series:  https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.244088444633424&type=3

Bad Blood Between Dogs with Katie Sipple of Wise Mind Canine

This episode we are talking with the Dog Relationships expert from Wise Mind Canine, Katie Sipple about just how much influence we actually have over the relationships between our dogs, how we can exert that influence, prevent problems, build resilient relationships, and enjoy less stress in our multi dog households. We are focusing in part 1 on early puppyhood, breeders, and preparing new owners for adding that puppy to a household with dogs. It's Time To Rethink Puppy Biting

It's Time To Rethink Puppy Biting

Join Susanne as she brings her experience as a breeder to her career as a trainer to discuss why it's time to rethink puppy biting. Replacing tired advice with multi faceted but practical techniques laid out in detail in her new on demand course Shark School Susanne wants to change the way we all look at, and address, this predictable puppy phase.

By embracing, instead of fighting, the normal developmental stages of puppyhood and the instincts of young dogs we can give puppies and their owners a strong bond, allowing them to enjoy each other's company, all while giving owners pragmatic tools for living with their baby shark.

Responsible Breeders, what makes or breaks one?

Responsible Breeders, what makes or breaks one?

Today I'm taking another pass at the ever popular subject of Finding A Good Breeder, a subject I have visited before in various ways from Another One of those Stupid “how to find a good breeder” lists….. to Rin Tin Tin, or Run Run Run? This time from the perspective of finding a breeder that shares your values.

As part of my new podcasting project I kicked off with how I define a Responsible Breeder and Substandard Breeder I've detailed out the Ethical Breeding Standard we use ourselves and I'm presenting it here for you in visual and PDF form. I find the Breeder Standard to be a vastly more functional way of identifying breeders I want to support and work with than most other such resources out there, because of it’s focus on core values, relationship building, and mutual understanding.

The Breeder Standard also cuts through the general fog on this subject that occurs when we obscures what really matters in favor of things we have been taught are more important than they really are.

Primarily what I mean by this is the blanket assignment of ”good” applied to breeders producing dogs for competition (show/sport) and the blanket ”bad” applied to breeders who do not breed dogs primarily for competition but instead for companion homes. This age old “find a show breeder” advice just misses the mark and has led to so many problems in the dog community that it’s long past time we move to something more meaningful.

Why? Why is the ”find a breeder who titles their dogs” advice damaging to the dog community?

Why is the advice to beware of breeders who don’t also damaging to the dog community?

Read the full article, including downloadable PDFs, in our newest take on how to find the puppy of your dreams.

Want even more?  Explore our free mini course, which includes a full discussion of The Breeder Standard, and our step by step Breeder Interview Checklist.

For more information on the 5 Freedoms check out this and this and perhaps if there is enough interest we will have a more in-depth discussion of the 5 Freedoms in another episode.
