KonMari method & sustainability: How to spark joy in your sustainability journey

Mari-Ann Lumeste is the first KonMari consultant and professional organiser in Estonia. She is passionate about finding joy in everything she does and helping others to find joy as well - also in their sustainability journey. KonMari method can be an introduction and the first step you take towards a more sustainable lifestyle or a possibility to take your sustainable lifestyle to a next level.

In this episode we talk about how the KonMari method and organising the physical space around us helps us to gain a new perspective on life as well as on our aspiration towards sustainability.

Main topics covered:

  • How are KonMari method and sustainability related
  • How to find joy in your sustainability journey
  • How it is all about conscious choices and taking small steps for the better

Having aqcuired an LL.M. Degree in corporate and commercial law, Mari-Ann discovered quickly that being a lawyer in a multinational company was not the life that she had always dreamed of. The lifestyle did not spark joy for her. Everything changed when she heard about the KonMari method. The method changed her life and since becoming the first certified KonMari consultant in Estonia, she has helped countless people change their lives for better. She is passionate about organizing the physical room around us, finding joy in everything she does and helping others to simplify and better their lives through organizing and finding joy.

Together with ther KonMari journey she also started her journey towards a more sustainable lifestyle. Choice by choice she makes decisions that spark joy for herself and are better for the planet.

Jätkusuutlik elustiil - vajadusest ettevõtteni. Intervjuu Elamise Kergus ettevõtte omaniku Monika Kallastega.

Jätkusuutlik elustiil - vajadusest ettevõtteni. Intervjuu Elamise Kergus ettevõtte omaniku Monika Kallastega.

Intervjuu jätkusuutliku elustiili poe Elamise Kergus omaniku Monika Kallastega.

  • kuidas toimub toodete valik sortimenti
  • mis on jätkusuutliku toote hinna taga
  • millised on hetkel kõige populaarsemad tooted
  • kuidas alustada teadlikumat tarbimist
  • millistest toodetest alustada, kui soovid senised tooted ümber vahetada jätkusuutlikumate vastu

Saates mainitud tooted:

Turning Throwaway Culture into Giveaway Culture - an Interview with Anja Schlott

Turning Throwaway Culture into Giveaway Culture - an Interview with Anja Schlott

In this episode, we’re talking to Anja Schlott, PhD Biochemistry and Molecular Biology / Infectious Diseases, about food waste and an app called Olio, that helps us in reducing ours.

This podcast episode discusses:

  1. Why is food waste a problem for the environment?
  2. What can and should we do about it? One of the solutions is the Olio app.
  3. Anja shares how she has used the app and why it stood out for her as a great solution in reducing food waste.

Food waste is one of the top contributors to climate change. Some facts & figures (ref):

  • Between 33-50% of all food produced globally is never eaten. The value of this wasted food is worth over $1 trillion.
  • Meanwhile 800 million people go to bed hungry every night. That is 1 in 9 people on the planet who are starving or malnourished.
  • Food waste is harmful for the planet:
  • It takes a landmass larger than China to grow the food each year that is ultimately never eaten.
  • 25% of the world’s freshwater supply is used to grow food that is never eaten.
  • If food waste were a country it would be the 3rd largest emitter of greenhouse gases (after China & the USA).

Anja is originally from Hamburg, Germany and recently finished at PhD at the Francis Crick Institute in London where she was working on Drug Discovery against the Malaria Parasite. She has been working in the field of sustainability for more than two years helping to build up a sustainability team at the Francis Crick during her PhD and organising with InnerPlanet the London Climathon 2019 and working on a carbon emission tracking technology. She is now starting a new role at Mondra (carbon labelling) to become a Life cycle analysis Consultant to look at a way to enable consumers to choose the most environmentally friendly food product by giving transparent information.

Anja has a passion for nature and has been working towards her own sustainable lifestyle changes, which she shares on her Instagram. One app has really stood out however in helping to reduce food waste and now also share non-food items with other people.

Understanding Climate Change - Interview series with Biologist Madis Metsis

Understanding Climate Change - Interview series with Biologist Madis Metsis

Welcome to Sustainability School, the practical podcast that provides tips and ideas for people who care about the environment and want to make a positive difference with their actions. I invite you to learn about sustainability with us, let’s make sense of the climate crisis step by step and find out what we can do about it.

In this episode, we interview Madis Metsis, a biologist with many years experience and a wealth of knowledge on the subject of nature, biology and climate. Madis has worked in many of the world’s top universities as a professor and researcher, such as The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, California, where he was Associate professor in neuropharmacology, as well as in several private sector research and technology companies. Madis has published over a hundred scientific publications, some of them on subjects of trees, forests, fungi and the ecological interconnectedness of it all. So, I beleive he is the perfect person to pick a brain on the subject of climate change and sustainability.

The first part of this interview series, is about Understanding Climate Change. We look at the greenhouse effect, CO2 and methane and explore the big problem we are facing with permafrost melting in the Arctic regions. Key take-away from this: If we have the will, like in 1987 we did by agreeing the Montreal Protocol to amend the ozone layer, then we may be able to reverse the climate change process.
