S3.5/E45: Music Publishing Isn't Scary or Confusing + How to Land a Sync Placement w/ Award Winning Composer Matthew Wang

One of host & author Emily White's goals in life is for songwriters to be able to clearly define music publishing in a way that they understand and can communicate to others. As well as collect on their music publishing in full. As publishing is the #1 missing revenue stream Emily identifies in her years of conversations with musicians. This episode will simply break down exactly that as well as share best practices to put yourself in a position to land sync placements - songs in film, TV, ads, video games, web shows and more. To do so, there is no one else Emily wanted to speak to other than Matthew Wang whom Emily initially met when he was interning with composing legend Hans Zimmer. Wang has written music for a vast range of different projects—from the Pharrell Williams-executive produced Netflix kids program Brainchild (2018), to Shaquille O’Neal’s basketball animated short HeadNoise (2021), for which he was awarded a Hollywood Music In Media Award in the category Best Song for Short Film. His extensive television composing credits include NBC’s The Young Rock (2022) and New Amsterdam (2018-2022), Showtime’s Yellowjackets (2021-2022), Hulu’s Shrill (2019-2021), Netflix’s Ginny and Georgia (2021) and Glow (2019), HBO’s Mrs. Fletcher (2019). He found his first feature film in IFC Midnight’s thriller Centigrade (2020), which he co-composed alongside Trey Toy, and went on to co-compose the television films RENO! 911: It's a Wonderful Heist (2022) and RENO! 911: The Hunt for QANON (2021) with Craig Wedren. Wang has also worked with Devo & composing icon Mark Mothersbaugh. We hope you learn as much as Emily did from this powerful conversation with Matthew!

How do you build a sustainable music career? You start by making great art, which we covered in the previous episode. The other component is to collect as much direct to fan contact information from your audience as possible, ideally in the form of their mobile phone number. This episode explains how to do just that with Community.com, which is the go-to platform to text your fans about your music, shows & more and was built for musicians. We do so by digging in with Community's Head of Music, Erica Fagundes. We also explore Erica's phenomenal career, which led her to where she today - empowering artists to communicate directly with their fans, instead of solely relying on algorithms & trends that come and go.

S2.14/E40: SPECIAL EPISODE w/ beatBread - Get Funding. Stay in Control.

S2.14/E40: SPECIAL EPISODE w/ beatBread - Get Funding. Stay in Control.

We're back already! Welcome to a special episode where we're highlighting the great work beatBread is doing to pay artists cash advances for streaming royalties with the artist / rights holder maintaining full control and all rights. Matthew is a major label veteran who, along with beatBread CEO & Co-Founder Peter Sinclair, realized that many artists weren't using labels' services. They needed the cash advance to hire the services of their choice. beatBread solves this problem by providing cash advances based on your streaming royalties so you can fund your career & life while owning your rights and making the choices that are right for your specific career & journey. Here we go!

Also! This really is a wrap for Season Two. Thank you SO much! +It's already time for Season 3! We'll be doing live tapings in partnership w/ New York Music Month and the NYC Mayor's office in June 2023, that will also be live streamed - both options are FREE! Grab your FREE in-person tickets HERE & livestream from our YouTube page HERE: https://youtube.com/@sustainablemusicpodcast.

+Huge thanks to beatBread for their support of this episode and all they are doing for artists! beatBread is a pioneering music and finance company that empowers artists to take control of their careers without giving away ownership of their music or their decision-making power. Founded in 2020, beatBread brings together a team with deep experience in music, finance, artificial intelligence and machine learning to create new opportunities for artists. beatBread provides independent and unsigned artists with financial advances that are repaid through a limited share of revenues from streaming and airplay, over a period of the artist’s choosing. beatBread's funding platform leverages its proprietary chordCashAI technology, and millions of dollars from beatBread’s Investor Network as well as institutional funds to provide advances that let artists and labels control their marketing and distribution partners while maintaining ownership of their underlying IP.

S2.6/E33: Setting Up Your Release & Distribution Plan w/ CD Baby's Chief Revenue Officer - Christine Barnum

S2.6/E33: Setting Up Your Release & Distribution Plan w/ CD Baby's Chief Revenue Officer - Christine Barnum

It's time to release your music! But how do you do so to maximize revenue? Your fans want to support you in the best way possible, but they don't know how if you don't tell them. We covered launching a pre-order in S2.2/E29 of this season, Pre-Recording Marketing Foundation, so you should already be monetizing your music before it's even out. When release day is here, Host Emily White reminds that you'll collect the most fan data for longterm monetization & receive the highest profit margins by sharing that your music is out on your website on release day. It can absolutely be on streaming platforms as well. But sharing your streaming links & news can wait a day or two, even though we know you're excited! On Day Two of your release week, Emily recommends sharing that it's on Bandcamp (again, it can be on Bandcamp on Day 1; we're talking about what you are communicating to your audience so they can support you in the best way for you). And then on that third day, push out on social media, etc that your music is out on streaming platforms. Doing so in this manner will put yourself in a position to make dollars, 10's of dollars, hundreds & thousands of dollars (or your equivalent local currency), vs fractions of a penny on streaming. Sharing your music in this order also ensures you get as much fan data as possible. With this data you can directly communicate with your audience for years to come when social media platforms come & go (hello MySpace!) & you aren't beholden to algorithm changes. Phew! That said, we want you to maximize your success on streaming as well and to do so, Emily chats with CD Baby's Chief Revenue Officer Christine Barnum. Here we go!

E26: *Bonus Episode* How to Be a Touring Crew Member w/ Noamme Elisha (Broken Social Scene, Sylvan Esso, Courtney Barnett, Tame Impala) & Jeff Maker (All Time Low, Dresden Dolls, Dropkick Murphys)

This is the second of three bonus episodes to wrap the first season of The How to Build a Sustainable Music Career and Collect All Revenue Streams Podcast! Host and Author Emily White was a global tour manager from ages 20-23. The touring crew world is a family that White cherishes deeply but realized there aren't always formal resources with basic information on what industry standards and norms are for those who dream of becoming a touring crew member. To share this information White interviews world class tour manager Noamme Elisha who has worked with Broken Social Scene, Sylvan Esso, Courtney Barnett, Tame Impala, K.Flay, COIN, among others. White also chats with her dear friend, Lighting Designer Jeff Maker, on how he got to where he is designing and programing the lighting for tours with All Time Low, The Dresden Dolls, Our Last Night, Dropkick Murphys, Good Charlotte, Pierce The Veil, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Gaslight Anthem, Yellowcard, Brand New, Boys Like Girls, The Click Five and more.

We hope you enjoy this episode whether you are looking to become a touring crew member or are a growing artist on the road ready to hire one.

E25: *Bonus Episode* How to Be a Session Musician w/ Brian Viglione (The Dresden Dolls, NIN, Violent Femmes, etc.)

This podcast, and the book it's based on, is written for the perspective of the musician who writes, records, and performs live. However listener Brian D wrote to Emily and asked how he can move his career forward without being a songwriter. He said, "I am a drummer trying to get my name out there to bigger artists." And thus this bonus episode titled "How to Be a Session Musician" was born.

Host and Author Emily White immediately thought of her longtime friend, Brian Viglione, for this episode. Brian is a world-class drummer whose band The Dresden Dolls has experienced the heights of success while he's parlayed that into a career recording with Nine Inch Nails and playing with one of his childhood heroes, The Violent Femmes. Tune in to hear how Brian has built a successful career as a session, touring musician and more.

E21: Repeat & Grow w/ Artist Nikki Hill

This is the second episode where Host Emily White interviews a handpicked artist to discuss the concept of the book this podcast is based on, in particular Chapter 11 - Repeat & Grow! As we've *just* about covered the entire modern music industry, now it's on you to go back to Chapter 1 (Get Your Art Together) to begin the process again. This episode takes you through Artist Nikki Hill's journey, who has been doing just that.

Nikki Hill has created a path outside of the norm and molding her own image has been a lifelong brand for the singer, songwriter, and bandleader.  With the lack of exposure for Black soul-rock singers/entertainers, Nikki found herself being misinterpreted. She became known in some circles just as much for confusing local audiences who initially assumed a different vibe based on her photo, as she did for leading an explosive, soulful, not-to-be-missed electric guitar-driven performance. Refusing to let the experience undo her path, Hill embraced the muse and jumped into the process of probing the vital role that Black women played in what became rock ‘n’ roll. As word spread, so did interest, allowing Hill opportunities to open for a range of artists like Dr. John, Aaron Neville, Los Lobos, to Eileen Jewel and Nelly, before any music was released. Nikki continued to develop her sound, learning with trial and error, a lot of road mileage, self-releasing albums, and carving out a place for herself, and hopefully a place for other people going through similar struggles.

We hope you enjoy and Happy listening!

E19: Revenue Stream Checklist with Artivist Steff Reed

E19: Revenue Stream Checklist with Artivist Steff Reed

Today’s episode ensures you haven’t missed a single revenue stream we’ve discussed to-date! Host Emily White reviews all revenue streams you should be collecting on if you write, record / release, and play music live. If not, you’re missing out on money!

To dig in deeper, Emily then interviews musician, educator, and activist Steff Reed. Reed has gained national acclaim as a producer and songwriter having worked with the likes of Trey Songz, Jhene Aiko, Eric Roberson, Swizz Beatz, Kenny Lattimore and Gordon Chambers on songs that made it to the Billboard charts. As an Educator, Reed has taught thousands of youth between the ages 4-24 over the last 15 years and is a GRAMMY Music Educator Award nominee.

Steff is also a proponent of Chapter 10 of the book this podcast is based on - Revenue Stream Checklist. In this chapter, Emily offers readers a free Google spreadsheet with the goal of musicians being able to track and project their music revenue Kind of like a “real” job, but in a good way. This also ensures that musician’s aren’t *missing* any revenue streams. As if there’s a blank entry in the spreadsheet, you are missing out on revenue. When writing the book, Emily wondered if musicians would use this tool and find it helpful. Steff did just that and in this episode they review all previous revenue streams covered in the book and podcast and explore Steff’s powerful career.
