The Humble Little Breadtag

The Humble Little Breadtag

This week we share an interview with Shani Nottingham, the founder of The Breadtag Project. Shani took a simple everyday item and decided to make art with it. But in a bid to discover more, she found opportunities to do better in education, awareness building, campaigning, activism and closing the waste loop.   This simple creative project has helped to implement change right across the world. Episode 48: Naturally Inspired with Krissy Ballinger

Krissy Ballinger has always been passionate about health, the human body and the planet. When she learned about the crazy number of ingredients in her cleaning and body care products, she decided to use this ‘universal nudge’ to do something about it. Valuing simplicity over convenience, she created her own products using natural and simple ingredients. She started on this journey with the intention of changing her family’s lives for the better, but continues on it because she needs as many people as possible to know that there is another way. Her DIY recipes can now be found online, and she has published several books, helping people to realise that avoiding store-bought, potentially harmful products not only benefits your own body, but also those around you, and of course, the planet. Check out her recipes and more at www.krissyballinger.com.au or on Instagram You can add your name to her petition calling for transparent labelling laws on cleaning products here. Episode 47: Give Where You Live

Gifting, receiving, sharing, lending and expressing gratitude are the simple things that don’t seem to happen that often anymore.  In this week’s episode, Jacqui shares her experience of the Buy Nothing Project and how a hyper-local gifting group not only minimises the amount of items that could potentially end up in landfill but helps acquaint people to others living nearby. In an age where people rarely know their neighbours, a ‘buy nothing’ group is a wonderful way to connect. With over twenty-five thousand members, The Buy Nothing Project is present in four countries (the US, UK, Canada, and Australia), and has over 150 groups in operation.  To find out more about the Buy Nothing Project please visit their website here. Episode 46: Stride into slow fashion with Jordan Wilkes

When professional soccer player Jordan Wilkes was 20 years old, he asked himself if his wardrobe reflected his personal values - and his answer was a resounding ‘no’! He refers to it as “giving passive consent to the ill’s of the world through your personal consumption”.  What followed is a quite remarkable story. We chat to this young and inspiring entrepreneur about his journey into ‘slow fashion’ and how he’s turned it into a budding empire.  “In the long-term, I want Stride to become an Amazon-Esque marketplace for Australians to buy anything and everything they want, but with the peace of mind knowing that they are supporting ethical and sustainable companies making the world a better place.” - Jordan Wilkes. Episode 45: Confident Conversations

Episode 45: Confident Conversations

Have you ever talked about climate change with someone and felt like the conversation didn’t go as well as you planned? Or have you avoided having these conversations because you don’t feel well equipped? In 2020, Climate Compass conducted research that identified seven segments in the Australian community according to attitudes and behaviours toward climate change. Although the research found 82% of Australians understand climate change is real and are worried about it - their response to messages, and willingness to take action is varied.  Lisa - through her work at Climate for Change was engaged to use this research and create a guide that would help everyone have more targeted and effective conversations about climate change with others.  It helps people identify what segment the person they are talking with belongs to, what the general values and attitudes are of that segment, and provides guidance on what messages would be appropriate and effective to get them to take more action. You can download our Climate Conversations Guide here. And if you’re interested to extend your skills in this area, Climate for Change’s facilitator training is free and builds on these basic tips to enable volunteers to guide group discussions about climate change that have a real impact. Episode 44: What is a Healthy Home?

Episode 44: What is a Healthy Home?

Creating an energy-efficient home doesn’t necessarily equate to creating a healthy home. What are the principles of a healthy home? And what are some of the most common mistakes to avoid when building or renovating, to ensure the home you create is healthy for both you and the environment? Zara D’Cotta is a healthy home coach and keynote speaker on a mission to empower 1 million people to take steps towards a healthier home. Zara learned about the link between our homes and our health after going through two different types of cancer. She is passionate about shining the spotlight on what she believes to be the least understood health challenges of our time. Zara chats to Jacqui about the things she wishes she had known that could have prevented the illnesses she has been through. Episode 43: Clean and green (in your laundry!)

If you are looking for a good place to start making your home a bit ‘greener’ then your laundry is an excellent place to start. Washing and drying clothes has a bigger impact on the planet than you might think  - so we decided to explore the different ways we can reduce our impact by simply greening up our laundry habits without sacrificing our hygiene and appearance! Episode 42: Preserving the right to witness nature’s beauty

Episode 42: Preserving the right to witness nature’s beauty

In a world where we are losing so many natural wonders, it’s so important for communities to stand up and protect our natural environment when given the opportunity. Mandy Robertson is a member of the Spider Crab Alliance – who are fighting to protect the yearly aggregation of spider crabs in the shallows of Port Phillip Bay. This group advocates to preserve this spectacle so that people of any age and ability can come to the shores and witness such an amazing sight for years to come.

Though Jacqui and Mandy are talking about spider crabs, this episode really highlights how nature needs people to not look away when something doesn’t feel right. The story of the spider crabs is an example of people coming together to take action on an issue that’s important to them, building a community and using their collective voice to empower others to step up too.

What do you want to protect? Have you ever thought about getting involved with a group or organisation working towards this? We hope that this chat will inspire you to take that next step.

Episode 40: Turning Resolutions into Actions with Banish

Lottie Dalziel, the founder of Banish, has established herself as a reputable Environmental Educator. A 2018 new year’s resolution ‘to do better’ when it came to her personal environmental impact, highlighted the need to help Australians reduce their waste with the right products and even better information.

Two years later, and her business
banish.com.au has established itself as a one stop shop to source sustainable products as well as a wealth of information to reduce household waste. In 2020, Lottie was invited to speak at TedX Darlinghurst’s Countdown event, and we chatted to Lottie about her story, her businesses and her hopes for the future.

Episode 39: 1200 chickens!

Episode 39: 1200 chickens!

Imagine buying some land in regional Victoria, figuring out how to work with it instead of changing it, and ending up farming over 1000 chickens, maintaining sheep, a jersey cow and growing your own food supply. Not only that, but achieving carbon positivity - drawing more carbon out of the atmosphere than you produce. Our guest Phil Westwood and his wife Jill have done exactly that. We spoke to Phil about how he started, what he has learned along the way, and his thoughts on simplicity over greed.

You can access Phil’s e-book on farming and lots more at:

Episode 38 - The Swag

We’ve all felt guilt around how much rotting fruit and veggies we throw out every week from the depths of our fridges. Recent stats actually show that the average Aussie throws out 126kgs of food each year. That’s a lot of waste! But what can we do? Where do we start? Introducing - The Swag! Our guest this week has created an innovative product that extends the life of our vegetables in the crisper. But not only that - the Swag’s founder - Peita has created a product that reflects her strong ethics, and values of minimising single-use plastic through sustainable and fair production for the environment and its supply chain.

Episode 36: Sustainable Sally

For more than 2 decades, Australian families watched as Sally Williams talked us through many different household products and brands. With a voice for radio and a face for TV, Sally was synonomous with the Brand Power tagline “helping you buy better”. So what made her say “no more” to promoting these brands? And who is this new character popping up on the socials these days? We chat to Sustainable Sally herself, about her decision to live and work in line with her personal values, how Covid19 has been the great equaliser, and how she wants to help everyone be more informed, more conscious - and buy even better.

Episode 35: Swapsies

There are tons of easy swaps that we can make in our lives to be more environmentally friendly. Waste is a crucial problem for today’s environment, but there are plenty of eco-friendly substitutes for single-use products that we use every day.

Lisa and Jacqui troubleshoot some ways to help you focus on reusing products again, rather than using them once and then sending them to landfill. Remember there is no such thing as throwing plastic ‘away.’ Have you got any others to add to our list?

Episode 34: Active citizenship with Mike McEvoy

How did Mike McEvoy deal with his internal panic about "the elephant in the room" that is climate change? Lisa has a chat with Climate for Change's National Program Manager about how his journey from a child looking at a poster of a pygmy possum led him to (as an adult) putting his hand up to run for Local Council. After he was elected he realised that change needs to be social in order to create higher-level action, and he has been building the social movement through C4C's Climate Conversation Program ever since. Episode 33: Single Use Ain't Sexy!

How much are we all washing our hands these days?! A lot! But now, practicing good hand hygiene doesn't have to mean excessive plastic waste. Today we chat with Josh Howard, the founder of Single Use Ain't Sexy. He started the business because he loves this planet of ours and he couldn't get his head around, how many single-use plastic bottles we all use!

With over 60 million single-use plastic bottles ending up in landfill everyday, he knew that he had to make some changes. So he made it his mission to find a solution to this problem - that's how Single Use Ain't Sexy was born. His cutting edge cleaning and personal care products make it so simple - just add water.

We had a great chat with Josh and it was so inspiring to hear about how his business has already saved over 31,000 plastic bottles from landfill in three short months.

Today we chat with Julie - the founder of Flora & Fauna, an Australian online business who sources and sells ethical, eco-friendly and sustainable products direct to you.  Having spent 20+ years working in retail, Julie wanted to create a better business. A business that was conscious of its impact on the world and one that contributes positively to society and drives change for the better. For too long we haven't known enough about how products are produced, what they're made of and who makes them. Retailers have not focused on their own supply chains and the waste produced. While we are thinking of ways to become more sustainable and make better environmental choices, companies are spending a lot of time and money to confuse us into thinking that their product or service is a safer, greener, better choice - but in actual fact, it isn’t.

Episode 25: Minimising Food Waste

Did you know that 40% of our household waste is made up of food scraps? Australians send 5.3 million tonnes of food waste to landfill every single year, where it produces the harmful gas methane as it breaks down. The greenhouse gases produced by the food waste in landfill is the same amount as those produced by the steel and iron ore industries combined.

We need to be thinking of clever ways to reduce, and utilise the amount of food that we are bringing into our households - as well as considering our options of disposing of the food waste afterwards. Jacqui and Lisa discuss some of the ways they try to minimise their impact, and invite you to join them on their journey.

Episode 23 - Mark Spencer (Part 1): The Man Behind Climactic

If you are into climate-related podcasts, chances are you have heard the name Climactic, or the voice of Mark Spencer. In April 2018 Mark saw a huge opportunity to connect everyday people with ideas to share about living well in the time of climate change, and Climactic was born. He will tell you that his podcast had humble beginnings, but Mark is a natural story-teller, and in a few short years, he's successfully gained interviews with politicians, sustainability experts, health professionals, filmmakers and many regular people making a difference. The Climactic Collective podcast has since released more than 100 hours of published audio over 150 episodes, and has recently topped one hundred thousand downloads. He co-founded this platform to share people’s stories in their daily struggle to live sustainable lives. We feel privileged that amongst all of this, he connected with us, and gave us some of his time to get to know a little bit more about his personal story. Connect with Mark on Instagram @climacticshow & on Facebook at facebook.com/climacticshow And if you haven’t already, subscribe to Climactic wherever you get your podcasts. Episode 19: Sustainable Silly Season

Episode 19: Sustainable Silly Season

At the time of releasing this episode there were only 44 days until... Christmas!!!

It's that wonderful time of the year - decorations come out, carols start playing in the Supermarket, and many sustainable habits fly out of the window as we get caught up in the excitement. This episode is a quick check over what we can do at this time of year, and how to be mindful of not creating too much unsustainable waste while we celebrate and spend time with our families. Ho ho ho!
