Tribal Elections, Taking Healthy Risks, and the Importance of Indigenous Youth Engagement

Tribal Elections, Taking Healthy Risks, and the Importance of Indigenous Youth Engagement

This episode was recorded in Spring 2022.

In this episode, Kamryn Yanchick talks to Indigenous student organizers about the process of participating in tribal elections, Indigenous social structures, and the importance of young people's participation in youth councils. They discuss the intimidation factor of speaking to elder councils, honoring tradition, and existing in a social paradigm that doesn't always feel responsive to young people and student voices. How can activity in tribal government differ from a sense of obligation towards non-tribal elections? What trends and forces can be leveraged to encourage greater participation in tribal elections? Students discuss motivations, celebrations, and struggles.

Trinity Guido belongs to the Delaware Nation of Oklahoma and also descends from the Caddo, Kiowa, Comanche, Apache, and Fort Sill Apache people. Trinity is from Anadarko, Oklahoma but currently resides in Norman, Oklahoma with her husband and their two children. Trinity recently graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelors in Public and Community Health with a minor in Native American Studies and Pre-Medicine. Trinity was involved in many on-campus organizations and leadership positions while in school. Trinity was affiliated with Gamma Delta Pi, Inc., GEN, AISA, AISES, SACNAS, and Student Congress. Trinity has also served on various tribal leadership boards and committees at her tribe including the Delaware Nation Gaming Commission, Election Committee, Cultural Preservation, and Language department. Her most recent position is serving as a Board Member of the Citizenship Committee. She is also involved as a member of the Lenape Matriarch group. Trinity puts forth her efforts with initiatives that serve tribal communities. She was very excited to be a guest on this podcast to discuss her journey in tribal government and elections.

Elwood McClellan, Jr. is a member of the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma. Mr. McClellan is the Southern Plains Region Representative to the National UNITY Council Executive Committee. Mr. McClellan currently serves as the Chairman of the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma's UNITY youth council and has served on the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma's Election Board where his interest in program development derived. This all took place during Mr. McClellan's time at the University of Oklahoma where he recently graduated with his Bachelors in Human Relations. The experiences throughout his life and material that his degree path has provided, he plans to directly apply his studies to Indigenous communities.

State Spotlight: Georgia's SB 202 On My Mind (Part 1 of 2)

Campus Vote Project Student Advisory Board Members Gabriella Lewis and Jayme Beasley discuss how Georgia "flipping blue" might be a bit of a misnomer. What if we told you that it was a blueish-purple mirage with a reddish hue? You probably wouldn't be super shocked, but it's important to center the conversation here. They also discuss the jungle primary system in Georgia and analyze the classism intrinsic to Georgia's electoral power structures. Later in the program, Campus Vote Project Democracy Fellows Christina Williams and Crystal Hernandez discuss with moderator Jayme Beasley Georgia's contentious and controversial SB 202. You remember that one, right? It got Coca-Cola cancelled for a few days and drew national indignation. But what is in the legislation and, to use lawyer speech, qui bono? What have HBCU students done to offset sustained attacks on voter organizing in Georgia? Are any parts of the bill helpful for voters? There are shout-outs in this episode to Georgia State Coordinator Ciarra Malone of Campus Vote Project for all of her support of new students entering the voting rights space!

It's Indigenous Peoples' Day! Let's Talk About Native Student Voting and More

Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day!

The second Monday of October is Indigenous Peoples’ Day, and this year we are taking time to talk about the experiences and efforts of Native youth organizers when it comes to getting out the Native vote. Campus Vote Project Student Advisory Board member Kamryn Yanchick (Seminole/Mvskoke) is joined by Cordelia Falls Down (Apsáalooke /United Keetowah Band) and Brittany McKane (Mvskoke/Seminole) in this discussion covering topics such as the importance of cultural competency in voter outreach. On this Indigenous Peoples’ Day, listeners are encouraged to acknowledge the land they live on (Native-land.ca) and learn about how to be a better ally to the Native community around them.

Kamryn Yanchick is a proud citizen of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma and descendant of the Muscogee Nation. She is in her senior year at the University of Oklahoma studying political science and Native American studies with an emphasis in tribal governance and policy, pre-law. She first became involved in civic engagement organizing through serving multiple roles on the executive team of Oklahoma Votes at the University of Oklahoma. Currently, Kamryn is a member on the Campus Vote Project Student Advisory Board and serves as a Voter Registrar with Rock the Native Vote OKC.

Brittany McKane is Mvskoke and Seminole, from Little Axe, Oklahoma. Brittany attends the University of Oklahoma and is majoring in Native American Studies and Anthropology, with a minor in Social Justice. She has served in various leadership campaigns and roles at both community and national levels. Engaging Native youth in trainings designed to activate this generation of leaders through organizational efforts is Brittany’s focus today and her continued work. Brittany currently works as a teacher’s aide at Sovereign Community School. You can find her on Instagram at @brittanyfaif.

Cordelia Falls Down is a member of the Apsáalooke Nation and United Keetoowah Band. Her name is Biabaashíalebaaxpáash which translates to “Sacred Dream Woman” given to her by her grandfather Art Alden, a Vietnam veteran. Cordelia is from the Crow reservation of Montana but currently resides in Norman, OK where she completed a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a minor in Native American Studies at the University of Oklahoma. She is currently in graduate school to pursue a Masters in Native American Studies-Tribal Governance and Policy. The Student Voting Bill of Rights

The Student Voting Bill of Rights

There is a need for student voters to organize and agitate for their own bill of rights as a result of historical and recent attempts by antagonistic actors to stymie the student vote. Restrictive voter ID laws, hostile elections officials, sometimes-indifferent college administrations, overworked students, record economic inequality, and a global pandemic have wreaked havoc on the ability of students to make their voices heard easily and reliably. American University Graduate Student Emma Godel speaks with Students Learn Students Vote Coalition Special Projects Director Eddy Zerbe about the Student Voting Bill of Rights and also moderates a conversation with students Maya Mahdi, Christyna Reagan, and Sebastian Canales about how this landmark policy could change the national voting rights landscape.

Maya Mahdi is a Philosophy, Politics, and Economics major at Virginia Tech. She is the founder and Student Director of Hokie's Vote Caucus - Virginia Tech's first nonpartisan, student-led voting rights group aimed at institutionalizing voter education at Virginia Tech. Her Instagram is @maya.inc and her Twitter is @mermayamaids.

Christyna Reagan is a Political Science and Gender Studies student at Eckerd College, working as the vice-chair of Eckerd’s chapter of FLPIRG Students and the co-coordinator of the chapter's New Voters Project. She works to engage all students at Eckerd College and hopes to work across the South to empower students from all backgrounds to use their voice. Her Instagram is @christ_y_na and her Twitter is @c_p_reagan.

Sebastian Canales is a Junior majoring in Political Science at the Cleveland State University. He is a member of Campus Vote Project's Student Advisory Board.

International Perspectives: Comparing Institutionalized Student (d)emocratic Engagement in Ireland and the United States

International Perspectives: Comparing Institutionalized Student (d)emocratic Engagement in Ireland and the United States

Episode recorded on April 2nd 2021.

Catherine Arnold and Gillian O'Neill join Campus Vote Project Student Advisory Board Member Benjamin "Benjie-Boy" Nixon to explore topics including but not limited to the colonial underpinnings of gerrymandering in Ireland, the European Union's impact on Ireland's socioeconomic propensities, pestiferous political puritanism in online activist spaces, and the shortcomings of stanning politicians.

Catherine Arnold is a student at Trinity College Dublin. She majors in sociology and minors in philosophy. As the National Labour Youth Gender Equality officer and co-chair to Labour LGBT, she not only adds unnecessary "u's" to the word "labor" but she also dips her fingers into countless proverbial political pies such as migrant rights, plastic pollution, the advancement of gender equity, and other important topics. She puts 90's litterbug public service announcements to shame. You can find her on Facebook - she's the Catherine Arnold with blond curly hair reminiscent of a labradoodle.

Gillian O'Neill is a third year Law student at Trinity College Dublin, currently on her Erasmus year abroad at the University of Helsinki. She is Assistant Features Editor and a staff writer with The University Times, Ireland's largest and most successful student newspaper. She is interested in the intersection of politics and lifestyle, experimental baking, learning new languages (although don't ask her about her love-hate relationship with Duo) and cuddling her dog Alfie. You can find her on Twitter @gillianONeill_

State Spotlight: New Jersey's Primary Ballot Wasteland

State Spotlight: New Jersey's Primary Ballot Wasteland

Election law attorney Brett Pugach has an enlightening chat with Campus Vote Project Student Advisory Board Member Benjamin Nixon to discuss an undemocratic and arcane law which lends significant electoral advantages to New Jersey incumbents and those who fall in line with New Jersey's political party machinery. Redolent of the 19th- and 20th-century grift machine that was Tammany Hall, politicians' towing of "the county line" is integral to electoral success in New Jersey. Failure by New Jersey politicians to tow the line can result in metaphysical exile to Ballot Siberia - and an almost certain electoral defeat. Students are disempowered by this policy because it reduces the diversity of candidates and the ability of insurgent candidates to mount effective campaigns against incumbents. Brett has some ideas on how to fix the broken ballot and restore equitable democracy in the state, but are the party apparatchiks ready for what he has in store?

Voter Pre-Registration, Dark Money Removal, and (d)emocratic Institutionalization: We Really Need To Talk About HR1

Voter Pre-Registration, Dark Money Removal, and (d)emocratic Institutionalization: We Really Need To Talk About HR1

Recorded on March 5th 2021

Campus Vote Project Intern Emma Godel moderates a conversation between CVP Student Advisory Board Members Katya Ehresman & Kevin Ballen as well as Democracy Fellows Jeremy Johnson & Raymond Barber to discuss HR1. If passed by the Senate, HR1 - the For the People Act of 2021 - would represent one of the most significant advancements of voting rights since 18-year-olds became legally allowed to vote (by constitutional amendment, might we add) or the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was signed into law. Stirrings of meaningful institutionalized civic engagement on college campuses, same-day voter registration, improved student access to ballot boxes, removal of dark money from politics, buttressing of ethics rules in politics, oh my! But what hurdles does it face? Does it go too far, or perhaps not far enough? Is student voting actually sexy, or are you just a try-hard for trying to get people to vote? Students weigh in.
