#160 - Pigs and airflow - how important is it and how do we optimize it? - Dr. Brett Ramirez

#160 - Pigs and airflow - how important is it and how do we optimize it? - Dr. Brett Ramirez

Pigs will only be able to grow at their max potential if they are in good health, and an important component of having good health is having proper air quality and airflow in your barns. In today’s episode, I talk with Dr. Brett Ramirez about proper airflow, the importance of air quality in new and old barns, and other things to consider when designing a new swine facility.

"Ventilation is important and can't be ignored. It is something that works 24/7 and if it fails it's pretty catastrophic if you aren't prepared." - Dr. Brett Ramirez

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻:

- First steps when building a swine barn
- Things to look out for in a sow barn
- Putting new technology in old barns
- Finding the airflow sweet spot
- Designing a wean-to-finish facility
- New tech developments
- Importance of pig heat production

𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁: Dr. Ramirez’s research and extension program encompasses swine and poultry production systems with a primary focus on: ventilation, natural resource and energy efficiency, animal energetics, environmental control, and precision livestock farming. Through mentoring students on fundamental and applied research projects, his program aims to generate practical solutions to current and emerging issues surrounding animal agriculture and its producers. He received his BS and MS in Agricultural and Biological Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2012 and 2014. Then, Brett completed his PhD at Iowa State University in late 2017 and transitioned to his current position as an Assistant Professor in the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering.

#157 - Inspiring youth to be the future of the swine industry - Dr. Joel DeRouchey

Arguably the best thing that the swine industry can do today to plan for the future is to get the next generation interested in agriculture. With less families having a background in agriculture today than in past generations, it is much more difficult to introduce children to the swine industry. In today’s episode with Dr. Joel DeRouchey, we talk about the importance of this subject and the opportunities we need to utilize to attract the bright minds of the future.

"Each one of you that are listening can have a large impact on spurring the interest of our youth in the swine industry." - Dr. Joel DeRouchey

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻:

- Youth involvement in the swine industry

#150 - Feeding gilts and sows - Dr. Crystal Levesque

#150 - Feeding gilts and sows - Dr. Crystal Levesque

Transitioning the gilt into a successful sow is not always a simple task. They require particular attention and we cant treat them just like any other finishing pig. Similarly, graduate students often need quality education and preparation for their next step in their career. In this episode I talk with Dr. Crystal Levesque about raising the developing gilt as well as how to best prep graduate students to enter the industry.

"The developing gilt is not a finishing pig. The way we create value in management and feeding on the finisher side does not apply to developing gilts." - Dr. Crystal Levesque

4. Sow feeding programs going forward
5. Training and educating students
6. What students are missing coming into the industry

𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁: Dr. Crystal Levesque was born and raised on a broiler and mixed grain farm in central Saskatchewan, Canada. She completed her PhD at the University of Alberta followed by post-doctoral training at Prairie Swine Center and University of Guelph prior to accepting a position of Assistant Professor of monogastric nutrition at South Dakota State University. Her main research interests are protein and amino acid metabolism during pregnancy and maternal nutritional influence on offspring growth and development. She is actively involved in collaborative research on the impacts of alternative feeds and dietary additives on piglet growth, immune function, and gut health post-weaning and the use of the pig as a model for human health.

#146 - Mindsets and preparation for entering the veterinary industry - an expert's perspective - Dr. Sue Burlatschenko

Any industry expert knows how nerve-racking it can be to start your first job after graduate school or veterinary school. Everyone expects you to be an expert and have all the answers, but there are some things you are definitely still learning. Dr. Sue Burlatschenko knows that feeling because she felt it herself when she first started out. Now after owning her own practice for several decades she reflects and shares her advice with Dr. Greiner about ways to overcome that stress and learn to be an industry leader yourself.

"𝘏𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘢𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘪𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧. 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘨𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘢𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘯'𝘵 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘣𝘺 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘱𝘪𝘥." - 𝗗𝗿. 𝗦𝘂𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗹𝗮𝘁𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗸𝗼

She obtained her Diplomate status in Swine Health and Production in 2005 and a Master of Public Health in December 2013. She was the first veterinarian in Canada to diagnose PED, which provided more than enough experience with a novel disease outbreak.
