Terry Battenberg - You Can Run with Anyone

On this episode of the Baskipedia Podcast, we discuss transition offense with Coach Battenberg.

Terry Battenberg moved with his family to Sacramento, California when he was 16. While attending Cal State University at Sacramento, he began his coaching career at Jesuit High School where he eventually became California's youngest head coach at the age of 22.

Following a successful four-year run at Jesuit, which included four league titles and one NorCal Championship (TOC), Coach Battenberg became
an assistant to Hall of Fame Coach Ralph Miller at Oregon State University in 1971-2. A year later, he was named the head coach at Montana Tech
College in Butte, Montana where his team set a
school record (at the time) with 24 wins and only 8 losses. From 1980-84, Battenberg coached at American River College in Sacramento, California, where he was an assistant to John Karsten for three years and head coach for one. In 2008-09 he served as an assistant coach at Sacramento State University

During his 34 year coaching career, Coach Battenberg has also directed five different Sacramento area high schools to a league title (13 titles in all during 24 years as a high school coach). He began his career with a 26-2 season at Jesuit High School in Sacramento and finished at Vista Del Lago High School in 2015. Battenberg has coached 25 All League Post Men in 24 years as a high school coach and three in his five years as a college head coach.

Kristen Dowling Bio:

Kristen Dowling enters her second season at the helm of the Pepperdine women’s basketball program after a 16-15 (.516) record in her first year.

After a tremendously successful seven-year run at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the former Pepperdine assistant coach returned to Malibu as the women’s basketball head coach ahead of the 2019-20 season.

Dowling posted a 147-46 (.762) record as the head coach of the Division III Athenas, including six straight 20-win seasons and at least a share of six consecutive SCIAC regular-season championships. Her squads won the SCIAC Tournament four consecutive years between 2014 and 2017 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament each time.

“I am elated to lead the Pepperdine women’s basketball program,” said Dowling at the time of her hiring in July 2019. “I want to thank President Benton, President-Elect Gash, Steve Potts and Karina Herold for entrusting me with the leadership of this program. Pepperdine’s Christian mission and commitment to academic and athletic excellence are core to who I am, and makes this an absolute dream come true. I am excited to get to know the current team, compete with purpose and build upon their success. The future of Pepperdine women’s basketball is incredibly bright.”

Adam Cohen "Being an Assistant at a High Academic School"

Adam Cohen of Standford University joins us on The Baskipedia Podcast. Coach Cohen and Coach Hart discuss his rise up the ranks of coaching and what it is like to coach at High Academic schools such as Rice, Harvard, Vanderbilt, and Stanford. He gives great advice to coaches that want to go up the ranks and be a D1 assistant coach.

Adam Cohen, recognized as one of the nation’s top young basketball coaches, has made a strong imprint in his first four seasons at Stanford. After serving as an assistant coach for the Cardinal his first two seasons, Cohen was elevated to Associate Head Coach prior to the 2018-19 season.

Cohen owns a decade of experience as a college basketball mentor, including eight as a collegiate coach. He enters his fifth season at Stanford in 2020-21, previously serving as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt (2014-16), Harvard (2013-14) and Rice (2012-13).

Regarded as a top-notch teacher with a strong pedigree for developing talent, Cohen has helped mentor several all-conference players. Primarily working with Stanford’s perimeter players, he has made a strong impact on the group. KZ Okpala was drafted by the Miami Heat in the second round of the 2019 NBA Draft, and Daejon Davis and Tyrell Terry have earned spots on the Pac-12’s five-member All-Freshman Team, with Terry also earning All-Pac-12 distinction. Dorian Pickens was an all-conference selection for his performance on the court and was voted the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year for his efforts in the classroom in 2018.

Leading all recruiting efforts for the Cardinal program, Cohen was instrumental in landing one of the best recruiting classes in school history for 2020. Stanford’s 2020 class was regarded by nearly all the recruiting services as a top-10 class, led by top-five signee Ziaire Williams, the highest-rated student-athlete in program history. The 2020 class joins 2017 as top-10 classes, while the 2018 and 2019 groups earned top-25 status.

Coach Klein Bio:

Men's Basketball Head Coach Jeff Klein is beginning his 20th season at Chaffey College and 36th overall in coaching.  In his nearly two decades with the Panthers he has racked up 436 wins, 17 playoff appearances, and has been responsible for transferring out over 100 student-athletes to schools in the US and Canada, as well as numerous professional basketball leagues worldwide.

Klein is a native of Long Island, New York where he was a three sport athlete (football, basketball, track & field) at Lawrence High School.  "Coach Fred Seger (University of Nebraska Hall of Fame - two sports) taught me discipline, instilled toughness and demanded excellence.  There were no excuses and no shortcuts." Another influential coach in Klein's professional career was Vance Walberg (Clovis West HS, Fresno City College, Pepperdine, Philadelphia 76ers, and Sacramento Kings).  Vance taught Klein the original components of "The System" (AASAA aka The Dribble Drive Motion Offense).

Klein's high school coaches were the people he most looked up to and their career path is what he modeled his own on.  After high school, Coach Klein attended Frostburg State University (MD) where he played one year of football for the Bobcats before transferring to SUNY Cortland.  At Cortland, Klein intended to play basketball and football, but injuries took Klein to the teaching/coaching route.  "At SUNY, I had the opportunity to work with the lacrosse team and found myself as the recruiting coordinator.  That was my first taste of coaching."  Klein's student-teaching experience at SUNY Cortland took him to the Onondaga Nation Reservation teaching K-12 and coached lacrosse.

Coaching to Klein is more than Xs and Os, he prides himself on the relationships he's been able to build with his student-athletes.  "I'm very involved in our players' lives.  I get to know each member of the team; who they are, their history," he added.  "Many of our players were not taught life skills.  I was lucky, I had a dad and coaches that taught me the value of accountability, communication skills, and time management."  Klein went on to recount the lessons he learned from his father, "He expected me to get up early, put in a hard day's work, dress appropriately, and be respectful.  He taught me things I took for granted that I try to give these young men, even something as simple as a firm handshake or tying a tie."

Webster led the Hornets to their fourth State Championship this past  season. It is the first for him as a head coach, however Webster is no  stranger to championship rings.
