Discipleship Handbook Week 10 - Multiply

Discipleship Handbook Week 10 - Multiply

As final words often are, some of Jesus’s last words to His disciples before He ascended into Heaven were significant. We should lean in very close to hear and heed the task He left them (and us) with, until His return.

These final words of Jesus are often referred to as the Great Commission, and as a follower of Jesus, it truly is the greatest mission we get to be part of. There is nothing more exhilarating and life-giving than to love and care about others so deeply that you are willing to lay aside your agenda, comfort, reputation, or even safety to bring the life-changing love and Good News of Jesus to others.

We are called to "multiply" and make disciples. Sharing our faith with others can be intimidating, though, and we often doubt our ability to do it. This week on "Table Forty," Matt and Leslee Holliday discuss how we as Christians are always representing Jesus, whether we're in church or at the grocery store. The life that happens in between presents plenty of chances to display God's love and to multiply our faith by sharing the hope of Christ with others.

This is the final week of our study through the "Discipleship Handbook," a 10-week plan from The Increase that examines some of the most important topics encompassing what it looks like to be a disciple of Jesus.

Discipleship Handbook Week 9 - Refined Through Trials

Discipleship Handbook Week 9 - Refined Through Trials

Faith is often a struggle. It can be a battle to hold onto faith when there is so much hardship and suffering in this world. The various trials we all face in life present us with unique temptations to lose faith. Where the enemy wants to use trials as opportunities to devour our faith, God wants to use them to refine and strengthen it.

As believers, we can cling to the truth of Hebrews 11:1, which says, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” This week on "Table Forty," Matt and Leslee Holliday examine what it looks like to have our faith grown stronger in the midst of the hard seasons of life.

This is Week 9 of a study through the "Discipleship Handbook," a 10-week plan from The Increase that examines some of the most important topics encompassing what it looks like to be a disciple of Jesus.

Discipleship Handbook Week 8 - The Greatest Commandment

Having established that children of God get to bear the family resemblance to our Heavenly Father by the power of the Holy Spirit, how might we summarize what that resemblance most purely and simply looks like? Asked a different way, is there a “greatest commandment” in the Bible?

Thankfully, we have such a question and response recorded for us in Matthew 22: Love God and love others. This week on "Table Forty," Matt and Leslee explore that great commandment and how it compels us to love God and others.

Discipleship Handbook Week 5 - The Gospel of God's Grace

Last week we discussed the problem of sin and what that does to separate us from God. The good news is that, through Jesus' death on the cross, we as Christians get to experience grace. As Romans 5:8 says, “God demonstrates His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Where we could never get back to God on our own, God made a way.

The Gospel is the good news that Jesus – God the Son, fully God and fully Man, the long-awaited and promised Messiah – died on the cross to pay the price for our sins so that we might be reconciled to right relationship with Him – completely forgiven, set free from the penalty and power of sin, and given a new heart that can turn away from sin and enjoy the presence of God. He was raised from the dead on the third day, defeating death, sin, and Satan, so that all who believe in Him and call on His name shall be saved (John 3:16, Romans 10:13). We are saved by grace through faith in Christ.

This week on "Table Forty," Matt and Leslee move on to Week 5 of the "Discipleship Handbook," a 10-week plan from The Increase that examines some of the most important topics encompassing what it looks like to be a disciple of Jesus. This week they dive into the Gospel of God's Grace.

The week we move ahead to Week 3 of the "Table Forty" study through the "Discipleship Handbook," a 10-week plan from The Increase that examines some of the most important topics encompassing what it looks like to be a disciple of Jesus. This week we look at what it means to know the heart of God.

The most important thing about any person is his or her view of God, for it shapes the entire course of one’s life. And yet, God is so utterly distinct from and above us that we can never fully comprehend Him or know who He is according to our own reason or speculation.

So how then can we know Him? Listen in as Matt and Leslee dive into this week's study.

We're into Week 2 of the "Table Forty" Podcast study through the "Discipleship Handbook," a 10-week plan from The Increase that examines some of the most important topics encompassing what it looks like to be a disciple of Jesus. This week we look at what it means to be made in God's image.

In Genesis 1:26-28, we see that God created man and woman in His image, after His likeness, and gave them dominion over the earth. “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it…” So what does it mean to be made in God’s image?

Matt and Leslee kick off their study through the "Discipleship Handbook," a 10-week study from The Increase that examines some of the most important topics encompassing what it looks like to be a disciple of Jesus. This week's study looks at "A High View of God."

In this opening week, we start at the very beginning in Genesis 1:1 and ponder God as the One True Almighty Creator — the main character in His story. We also focus on what we believe to be seven truths about God. Listen along as Matt and Leslee guide you through this first week, and as you listen, reflect on this question: Do you believe that God created the world and created you?

  • If not, what hinders this belief for you?
  • If so, how does this truth impact the way you think about the meaning and purpose of your life?

Sydney Ritter

Episode 101

Transitions in life can be challenging. Discerning "what's next" is not always an easy task, especially for those leaving college and entering into adulthood.

That's the phase of life that Sydney Ritter is in, and she joins Matt and Leslee Holliday on "Table Forty" this week talk about that. She talks about being away at college away from family, not compromising her morals, and how her faith in God helped her navigate college.

Transitions can also be tough for parents, too, whether that's a child leaving high school and heading to college, especially out of town, or leaving college and entering adulthood. Ritter and the Hollidays talk about the importance of getting involved at different stages of life and finding mentors to lean on who can help you navigate those different transition periods.

Ritter was a three-year letter winner in track and cross country at Oklahoma State University, where she also served as the president of the the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Episode 95

David Hess has always been able to play baseball at a high level. In October 2021, however, he ran into arguably his biggest roadblock yet. He started experiencing chest tightness, which led doctors to discover a cancerous tumor in his chest. His baseball career has been put on hold somewhat, but he is now starting to work his way back onto the field for the Tampa Bay Rays.

He and his wife Devin joined "Table Forty" this week to talk with Matt and Leslee Holliday about how God is working through them amidst the cancer diagnosis and recovery. They also open up about their marriage, their relationship with God, navigating long distance dating while David was in the minor leagues, and how their faith in God was formed.

Hess was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the fifth round in 2014 but eventually signed with the Rays in 2020. He was traded to the Miami Marlins in 2021 before eventually re-signing with the Rays. He announced in January that he was "cured" of cancer and clear to resume baseball activities.
