Episode 187 Ruby Topaz Live Interview

Episode 187 Ruby Topaz Live Interview

Mark Bram, AKA Ruby Topaz, has a myriad of musical influences that bleed into his sound, but what sets him apart as a musician is the ability to take these styles and morph them into some-thing entirely unique.

Ruby Topaz has just released an album titled Mark Bram/Ruby Topaz Again, which is a 23rd anniversary remaster of a record that will blow the listeners’ hair back.

He is also very fond of the improvisational instrumental Fusion/Progressive songs that they do live, noting: “These songs exist for the moment, and they’re just on fire. It’s like meditation while you’re playing, just in the zone, and I love that stuff.

It is a combination of songs that he recorded solo, as well as tracks with drummer Steve D’Andrea, which have all been remastered at Abbey Road in London from an album that originally came out in 2001.

One song he is particularly fond of is “Loneliness,” which he said is like his “Bohemian Rhapso-dy.” Bram wrote it when he was 16 and there is a swing jazz piece incorporated into the song, but instead of actual horns it is all guitar synthesizer.

There are also three bonus tracks on the album, and one is a medley including covers by The Grass Roots “Temptation Eyes,” into Chicago’s “25 and 6 to 4.” Once again, the horns are all gui-tar synth.

Another song is called “The Sack,” which is the B-side of his 1982 single that made waves over-seas. Bram said that this is truly a special track, reminiscent of early Led Zeppelin, that fans will really love.

Other songs called “Sandy” and “Lose Me” are what he described as “in your face, burn victim rock.” “Knife in My Back” is classic 1970s guitar style and “Unicorn Song” was originally record-ed in 1978, but this would be the fourth version of the single that now includes a horn section.

“This is all funked up and different, with a nice elongated guitar piece in the middle,” Bram said.

Topaz, who is a bass player at heart but loves to shred the guitar, is responsible for most of the instrumentals on the album, as well as the vocals. His higher toned voice can be compared to that of Geddy Lee, Freddie Mercury and Robert Plant, and the ripping guitar will take you back to the 1970s and 1980s with a refurbished sound.

The Rhode Island based musician explained that his musical journey really got started when he was just a young child when he was influenced by the Beatles. He said it blew his mind and changed everything, and all he wanted to do was be like Paul McCartney.

Then in 1968 his cousin went to the a club called Boston Tea Party to see a little band called Led Zeppelin. His cousin gave Bram their album and this blew his mind yet again. He ended up teaching his friend his first drum beat, and another friend how to play bass, then he started sing-ing high and playing guitar in what became a band called Shir (pronounced Sheer).

In the early 1970s someone suggested a name change and asked him what his birth stone was. It was topaz, and then someone suggested pairing it with ruby. He thought, “Ruby Topaz, oh like Alice Cooper.”

“Then eventually, as time went on just like Alice Cooper, people started calling me Ruby Topaz like it was my name,” he said. “It kind of became my alter ego.”

His band was playing glam rock, but also adding a progressive rock feel with a glimpse of ‘60s style. They blends the sounds of classic rock, metal, pop and more.

Ruby Topaz had international acclaim in in England and France when they sent out a single in 1982 that was played on pirate radio stations. The band ended up splitting up but he got back to-gether with his old friend Steve D’Andrea, to whom he had taught the Sargent Pepper reprise drum beat, way back in middle school. He still plays with D’Andrea to this day, as he is on six of the 14 tracks of the new album.

Ruby Topaz is already starting to record a new project and would like to eventually get out on the road for some touring.

Be sure to check out Mark Bram/Ruby Topaz Again, available on May 3 on all platforms.

Episode 185 Caz Kush Live Interview

Episode 185 Caz Kush Live Interview

Artist Caz Kush welcomes listeners to have a good time with his recent single “Piñatas.” Released under his label, Never Not Going In Ent., “Piñatas” is a fresh hit for all to enjoy.

“I just wanna catch people’s attention with Piñatas make peoples ears stand up then hit them with something deep, Piñatas is just the tip of the iceberg, i have a series called car bars and another that’s freestyles about the most random comments where every week I’m dropping straight bars on all platforms that accept video playback. Tune in and check me out not only all that I have so much unreleased music I’m working on putting out, with much more substance, valuable lessons, ect just stay tuned. Much more coming”

From age nine, the Indiana-based musician has been making music and exploring various art forms. He is a multitalented artist responsible for his own writing, producing, engineering, visuals, and covers--among other skills. “My Tag “Caz, You mixed this” signifies that every song has its own unique engineering and feeling to it, nobody mixes/masters the same, when you hear that “Caz You Mixed This” You will understand” Says Caz Kush, Caz Kush is also not afraid to experiment. He can smoothly transition across genres to create unexpected sounds for all listeners.

“Never coming from a violent place or the street life was a plus for me because I’ve always been the type to spread positivity through music and art. how to find yourself and just keep your head up, let people be there for you, there’s people who truly don’t have that so if you do be grateful and let them people help”

Caz Kush credits Tyler the Creator as a huge influence on his career. “He is himself, and that’s what I like to be,” shares Caz. “I’m bringing something new and different that people might not have seen before.”

The artist aims at spreading his message and showing people that “whatever you’re going through, you can flip it into a positive, your mind is powerful, some use them powers for good and some, well, don’t” Caz Kush wants to be the voice for people who might not have the words in their head to express themselves. “I’m trying to change the world for real,” he adds. “But I can’t do it alone--I need people with the same mindset, ones who are on the same wave”

“I’d rather help the world, a Grammy don’t mean you win”

When it comes to writing music, Caz Kush approaches new songs from a beats-first approach. “I take the thoughts in my head and do everything except the beat,” shares the artist. “Piñatas” originated from a beat on YouTube that caught the attention of Caz Kush. “I heard a beat called ‘Shake’ or something like that and I had to hit up the producer instantly to get the rights for it. It was so vibey, bouncy, catchy. I knew it could be played anywhere and people could attach to it. This is the kind of song you can play doing literally anything/make a dance to – people can get into because of the vibe and energy.”

Love and celebrate your people, we all got things we are going through, be there for the person next to you, and let them be there for you. Spread more love and peace around the universe

It helps way more then you may think”

We all go through different things and we all have different ways to cope with things, whatever helps you express yourself, a message, helps your chest not be so heavy, don’t be scared to let it out, there are most definitely people out there that could use it!

At the end of the day, Caz Kush wants listeners to know his music is for them. “Do what you gotta do to make it in life--healing, growing, doing everything you need to do, I love you all and wish you the very best in anything you do in life, make sure it’s amazing, I know it will be :)”

tells Caz Kush.

Episode 186 Alejandro Lema Live Interview

Episode 186 Alejandro Lema Live Interview

With “Seduce You,” Alejandro Lema, whose previous work has attracted millions of streams, begins a “new era,” a more focused and professional phase of his career.

The track, releasing May 10, matches the title. The music is slow, highly sensual, the tone and vocals dreamy, the theme overtly but not pornographically sexual.

The lyrics leave no doubt about the subject.

“Seduce You is a very sexy, fierce, sensual record that is expressing the act of sex and the gentleness and vulnerability that comes with it,” he said.

From the chorus, Alejandro’s voice up in the clouds:

You know I’d be Gentle with your body (body) Until you get used to me, Seducing you

“It’s pretty straightforward,” he said. “There’s no little entendres or anything.”

From the first verse, his voice back on earth in the borderland between baritone and tenor:

We’ll do it on the floor, until we’re sore

We’ve gone until we’re sore, but I want more

“‘Seduce You’ started off with me simply wanting to make something with pitched vocals as the chorus. I knew I wanted the lyrics to be very seductive because, with the beat being so simple, I wanted the lyrics to stand out.”

He describes the feeling he wants as “all in the moment.”

Alejandro is deliberate about the “new era” of a career that began on TikTok and other social media when he was in his very early teens, 13 or 14. That is where his millions of streams and his fan base come from. He began formally releasing music on all platforms in 2021, when he was 18.

He didn’t really know what he was doing or how to do it.

“It was new to me. I didn’t really know the right way to go about everything. I was just a kid in my room making music,” he said.

The music he put out between then and this year is highly charged, fast-paced, the lyrics explicit. Alejandro plays, experiments — grows — with the vocals and production. For all his talk about not knowing what he was doing, listening to his songs makes it clear why they got all those streams.

For “Seduce You,” he wanted a slower pace, a slower mood, a rawer feel.

“When I was creating the song, it felt like it needed to be raw, like parts where I’m not singing exactly on time, parts where my voice will rasp and strain slightly to add more emotion.”

In the end, he said, “It felt like the perfect mix, distorted and messy, but also very clean with the production.”

“Obviously, I had dreams and aspirations of making a big impact in music, but in terms of a full package kind of thing — my appearance, my vocal ability, my production, I feel like ‘Seduce You’ is a more polished, improved version of my sound.”

He wrote, composed, produced, engineered and performed the entire song.

He calls his genre “dark R&B” and alternative pop. One reason is that the label applies to the artists who inspire him. The mix he likes and describes also includes rock, R&B and mainstream pop.

They have something, he says, “that just draws me to them.”

Next for him is a debut EP, five to six songs, by the end of the year or early next year. “Seduce You,” the latest step in the evolution of his sound, is “just the start of that.”

“I look at my earlier stuff as me trying to find my sound. I don’t think I’ll ever necessarily ‘find’ my sound, but I’m getting closer.”

He aspires to a greatness that is his, where he gets “as big as I can get, get my music out to as many people as I can, and become that star that I always dreamed of when I was a kid, while still remaining human without losing my self.”

In a discussion of mainstream pop, alternative pop, R&B, rock, he says his music is not all one or the other, or even, perhaps, anything that hasn’t been done somehow at some time or other.

“But it’s something fresh. I want my music to have that something that draws other people in, and where they will hear me and be like ‘Okay. That’s an Alejandro Lema song.’”

In this way, too, “Seduce You” is a “start.”

Episode 184 DNT Live Interview

Episode 184 DNT Live Interview

DNT is a man of mystery and says that he wants his fans to love the music, and not just the per-son putting out the material. On May 10, he is releasing his debut five song EP called My Five Faces that features the new single “Girl,” that is complete with a catchy hook and an epic bass line.

“The record is about the jealousy that I’ve been through, but it also has a double entendre with what the girl went through during the story of the break up i’m narrating, as the rest of the EP has,” he said. “The song sounds happy with the melody and everything, but it is also really sad.”

The story in the song is about being jealous of the girl who is in another relationship after their breakup, but it turns out she isn’t happy either because it’s just something meaningless. It is something to just fill the void.

The tune is one that is timeless, reminiscent of disco and new age funk, with a poppy, dancey groove. The intense, yet ethereal, beat complements perfectly with DNT’s vocals, telling the tough story of love and jealousy.

DNT explained that almost everyone in his family plays music, and he has been playing key-board and singing since he was a child. He has been working on this EP for eight months, and has been involved in co-producing it.

DNT wrote “Girl?” in July when the events he sings about just happened. He then got someone to put a beat under it, but then he scrapped everything and started fresh. He wrote the bass line that comes before the chorus, which is simple and also masterfully done to uptick the song’s vibe in what is more akin to an ‘80s beat.

Each song is associated with a different face, or feeling. “On Top - Takeover” has to do with sex and is a remix of an unreleased song by The Weeknd.

“Parties I Eye-Rolled Rolling Ecstasy” has to do with drugs, but it is a song he wrote when he was sober originally titled “Mermaids Calling.” It talks about the life that he and his friends were living. The meaning is about guys who go partying every night and their mothers are waiting on the doorstep for them with a cross. She knows every time they go out partying, she isn’t sure if he is coming back.

“It’s about crazy night life, and actually I lost a person I knew like that right after I wrote it,” he said. “His name is hidden in the title”

The fourth song on the album, “Mirage of Us” has the face of regret. This is a jazzy number, and DNT made the drums poppy but with an R&B vibe.

The final song on the album, “Beatrice & The Devil” is about pain. It is actually two tracks com-bined. This directly relates to Dante of the Divine Comedy, Beatrice is the girl Dante is following through Hell till Paradise. The song is about himself trying to get this girl in love through sex, but in reality all she wanted was for someone to make her feel loved and protected. It transitions right into the Devil portion of the song, and is a rap section where the Devil takes the lead in the artist.

“Never let your feelings get you down,” DNT said. “I’ve been through some things, but you don’t have to let your feelings overtake you.”

DNT, which has a multitude of meanings that include Dante (From Divine Comedy) and “Do not trust,” is brand new to the music industry. Inspired by The Weeknd, he feels that this anonymity helped him get to where he is as one of the top musicians around. Some of his other biggest in-spirations include XXXTentacion and Travis Scott, and DNT also has a huge appreciation for Tame Impala’s music.

He is always working, and is already getting his next mixtape ready. DNT has the songs written and plans to get started on recording right after the release of this EP.

“I have written five other albums so I am prepared,” he said. “I don’t like doing things just out of nowhere. Everything has a meaning for me.”

Episode 183 Sienna Rose Live Interview

Episode 183 Sienna Rose Live Interview

Multitalented musician, actor, and model, Sienna-Rose Jerak is poised for the spotlight with her new single, “You Got Me.” Reflecting on the authenticity of music from the late 90s and early 2000s, Sienna Rose’s single aims at reducing the noise of today’s overstimulated music scene to bring her voice to life.

Living across two continents—Sienna Rose is based in both Melbourne, Australia, and Los Angeles, California—the talented Sienna-Rose has a wide range of life experiences to draw from. “I love performing,” shares the young artist. At the age of eight, Sienna Rose added acting to her resume. The multitalented artist also plays the piano!

Inspired by 90s’ sensations Brandi, Monica, and Christina Aguilera, Sienna Rose is also passionate about the “Y2K era”—the early 2000s. “It was a great time for young people,” she explains. “I love the 90s/2000s feel more than modern music.”

Set to an upbeat, 90s-type instrumentation, “You Got Me” portrays the intricate part of love in which you like someone but you’re not sure if the feeling is mutual. “It’s hot and cold,” shares Sienna Rose. “You’re wrapped up in games and don’t know what to do.”

“The meaning behind the song is basically when you like someone so much but you’re not sure if they like you back as much,” adds Sienna Rose. “It drives you crazy! You’re wrapped up in their games and want to get out but can’t. Basically, you don’t have the experience to work out if they like you as much as you like them.”

Working alongside GRAMMY award-winning songwriters and producers Jordan Omley and Michael Mani—who have worked with greats including Leona Lewis and Becky G—Sienna Rose is starting her musical career with undeniable strength. What sets “You Got Me” in a different category than everyday songs is that it doesn’t rely on strong autotune. In fact, the live sound is a refreshing quality that brings the song to life.

In addition to the fun, pop drive behind the single, the message strikes home for listeners everywhere. “It’s relatable for a lot of people, especially younger people,” remarks Sienna Rose. “That feeling when they have a crush—it’s universal.”

Not only does the young artist want to connect with listeners, she dreams of inspiring them, too. “It’s mainly what I want to do. I want people to believe in themselves without the pressure to cover up their true selves.”

When the young artist isn’t working on her music or starring in a production, she’s a regular kid, going to school and kindling a passion for animal rescue. Someday, Sienna Rose would like to start a foundation or rescue for endangered animals. In the meantime, listeners can look forward to the release of another new single, a ballad called “To Fly,” which counters the upbeat nature of “You Got Me.”

Episode 182 Alyssa Rose Live Interview

Episode 182 Alyssa Rose Live Interview

Soulful singer Alyssa Rose Hunt invites you to groove to her latest single, “Vibe with You.” The energetic track off her recent album is accompanied by an upbeat music video and energy that welcomes all to the party.

Telling stories is more than entertainment for Alyssa Rose—it’s a way of life. “I started writing when I was struggling with my mental health, around 2017 to 2019. In 2020, I started writing music as a way to express my thoughts on paper—get it all out.”

During this challenging period in Hunt’s life, she sought guidance from the universe, leading her on her current journey in music. “It was a spiritual awakening,” shares Alyssa Rose. “Magnetic Muse is the twin flame journey I’m on, based on the Chinese philosophic theory of yin and yang, masculine and feminine energy.”

Beyond the music, Alyssa Rose Hunt is an actress, dancer, choreographer, director, writer, painter, model, and photographer from Onatrio, Canada. Since 2019, the artist has released four albums, seven singles, and eight independently produced music videos. A few months ago, in March 2024, Hunt released her fourth album, the two-part EP dubbed “Magnetic Muse.”

“Vibe with You” is a featured single off Magnetic Muse Chapter 2. “It’s a very upbeat, catchy song. My mom said to me, ‘You gotta write pop, and I want to dance to it.’ I’m usually more soulful, but I said, ‘Ok, let’s write something upbeat so my mom can enjoy it,’” explains the singer. The core of the song is about having a positive, fun experience. “It’s about being with the person that rests your mind and you feel at peace with,” she elaborates.

Alyssa Rose highlights the major role of the drums in her single. “I really wanted to emphasize the drum solo because you don’t usually hear a drum solo—it’s usually saxophone and guitar that get solos—but the drums are the underdog yet they’re the main structure of the song.” The single’s drummer, Sam Ruttan, is a talented musician with a background in jazz, which he brings to the table. “‘Vibe with you’ is pop, but he adds a jazz feel.”

The music video accompanying the single was inspired by a sweater her mother used to wear often when she was a kid. Based on her sweater, Alyssa Rose created the set and story for the music video.

This album is about self-discovery for Alyssa Rose, as well as her twin flame journey. According to the artist, “I want to go within and figure out who I am as an individual—the yin and yang and finding that balance within myself. It’s important for everyone to find out who they are and their morals in life. Especially when it comes to love—you need to love yourself before you love anyone else. Discovering who you are and what you believe in is the first step.”

Creating music is a collaborative effort for Alyssa Rose. “Usually, I tend to feel a certain energy when it comes to the music itself. I’ll come up with the melody and lyrics for the energy I want to portray. Once I have the lyrics, I’ll ask my producer (Fresco Rhodes) and band (Sam Ruttan, Dan Espina) to create the energy I’m trying to go for. They bring their own vision to the table. Then we work together to collaborate in a way that flows really nice once mixed.”

Feedback for the single has been largely uplifting. “People say ‘Vibe with You’ is a classic. Out of the album, it’s a fun, radio-friendly song that makes them feel good. I like that kind of feedback—that it makes you feel good and you resonate with it,” shares Alyssa Rose.

Episode 181 Influence Live Interview

Episode 181 Influence Live Interview

Influence has been making hip-hop for a long time, about 25 years, performing in lots of venues and competitions, but he only started pushing his music out to the public last year.

“I’m done cooking up the style,” he said. “Now it’s time to put it out.”

To kick off the promotion of Influence and the multitude of sounds that characterize his music, he chose “What You Deserve.”

“‘What You Deserve’ is basically a hip-hop, R&B kind of dance track. It definitely has an Afro-centric dancehall vibe to it.”

Info Black sings the hook and Influence raps the verses.

In addition to the hip-hop, R&B and dance, bongos give the Afro beat an island lilt, which Influence attributed to the producer, Majestic Drama.

“I’ve heard a lot of those type of beats, and this is, in my opinion, one of the better ones.”

He made his first song when he was 16 and really got into it when he was 21. He is 41 now.

He has not, he admitted, given it a hundred percent all those years. He has a family and, in addition to music, he is an entrepreneur. “So, you know, music is not the only thing I have going on.”

But in the beginning, it was different.

“When I first started, of course, I was giving it a hundred percent — selling CDs out the trunk, way back in the day.”

Music is back as the main item.

“I know that it’s a dream that God put in my heart for a reason. I’ve always believed that I was gonna become successful at music. I think that I’m too talented at it to not be put in that position.”

Talent plus work. He never left music entirely. He has performed a lot and his winning competitions include the Uplifting Minds 2 National Talent Competition; The Best In The West 2 Hip Hop Competition; LA’s Next Up Music Showcase; The Showcase Tour; and the Coast to Coast Live Music Showcase. He was a finalist in the International Songwriting Competition.

He will be an official artist in the Mic Check Wynwood Season 2 in Miami from July 12 to July 15.

In his official bio, he says “R&B sparked his mind, but Hip Hop ignited his soul and became the driving force that drove him into the studio.”

The influences that impelled him to his own music come from hip-hop — Tupac, Biggie, Nas, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg — and R&B — Ginuwine, Dru Hill and Boyz 2 Men.

And what was it about hip-hop that fired up his soul?

“I think, really, it was the ability to express your art in that way.”

“That way” means, “I like rapping over hip-hop beats, obviously. I more so grew up on listening to R&B before I was introduced to hip-hop, and then it was like, ‘Ahhh! There we go.’ I do both. I rap and I sing.”

Each of his tracks is markedly different from the others. That is for a combination of reasons. One is personal preference.

“I take pride in being a versatile artist. I don’t want to have my sound boxed in. When I talk to producers and they ask me what type of beat or what type of vibe I’m looking for, I’m like, ‘Let me hear what you got.’ I really never know what I’m in the mood for, or you never know what’s going to jump out at you until you start listening. I’ll listen to 500 beats and pick one.”

Another is that, once he has a beat, he writes to it.

“I just start catching the vibe and words and melodies start flowing through my head. That’s usually the one I pick because it’s like, ‘Okay. I can put some energy into that.’”

“Some people ask me, ‘Oh, man, what inspired you to write that?’ or ‘What female were you talking about when you wrote that one?’ and I’m like, ‘Man, I wasn’t even talking about nobody in particular.’ Really. It’s just where the song took me. That song was 100 percent creativity.”

“I've been doing this music thing for” — he sighs — “way longer than I should have been doing it not to have been on by now. I’ve been patiently waiting. At the end of the day, this was all about God preparing you for this blessing that has been bestowed upon you, and so, I’ve just been getting ready, man.”

He is making his move.

Episode 180 Odelet Live Interview

Episode 180 Odelet Live Interview

When Odelet sings, it is as if she becomes part of the music.

In “Cinderella,” dropping April 11, her voice and delivery turn syllables into the notes of a separate instrument, giving the lyrics their own melody intertwined with that of the music.

The song is a mix of jazz and pop, dance and R&B, but Odelet’s voice and the way she delivers the lyrics makes it something different altogether.

“Cinderella” is the second single to be released in advance of both an EP, Odelet’s Hufflepuff (April 20) and an album, Pisces Pie (May 11).

“I’ve always been drawn to music because of what’s going on melodically,” she said. “That’s the foundation.”

In “Cinderella,” Odelet seems at first as if she is not singing words at all but playing her vocals. Then the lyrics, the syllables and words, begin materializing like magic out of her rich, beautiful voice.

Fall again and fall again

Before the underneath me rolls

Rolla rolla roll again

Before the stroke of midnight tolls

I just know I’m gonna, gonna

Fall, fall, fall

In love again and again

The production is an homage to “old-school hip-hop.” Odelet’s jazz style vocals tell a modern Cinderella story. The vibe is “a minimalist hip-hop song, almost a club song.”

She loves writing lyrics but, she says, she always thought of her voice as an instrument.

As she talks, the phrases that come up are “drinking in the music,” “riding on the music,” “like a dream,” “a comfortable, harmonious feeling.”

“It’s very funny to describe things that feel ineffable,” she concludes.

In her relationship to her music, her voice, the lyrics and her presentation of them, she said, “There’s a fairy tale kind of feeling.”

Odelet, a “savant singer,” a musician, composer and producer, was born in Detroit, grew up with soul and R&B and in her bio describes her genre as “a bit hard to say, R&B for sure, or neo soul, or pop, definitely some heavy hip-hop influence and a bit of jazz.”

She performs almost all her own instrumentation and has been putting out music since 2021, when she released a 19-track album called Experiment.

In 2022, she co-founded a production company, Everlasting Tape, and put out “her first full band production,” The Angels Album, which features Odelet singing primarily soul and R&B.

“Cinderella” is for her “a love song to myself,” but one that she says anyone can turn into a love song about themselves.

In fact, she says, “A characteristic of the 11 songs on Pisces Pie that very much applies to ‘Cinderella’ is that they sort of double as love songs for another person loving someone else, but they’re also sort of empowerment songs about love of self.”

“Cinderella” is one of three or four poppy songs on the albums, but “if you just heard ‘Cinderella,’ you really would have no idea what you’re in for.”

The album will present a mix of jazz, R&B, soul, hip-hop and more.

“It is sort of about me because I love what has taken place with the sound that I make. It often feels very dreamy to me. What happens vocally from me, as Odelet, is a very Cinderella kind of feeling.”

She is, essentially, describing the creation, or evolution, of an artist.

“I’m just gonna let my music come out however it comes out and play with it that way, because it’s more about the experience of it, the thrill of creating it.”

You can experience the thrill with her by connecting to Odelet on all platforms for new music, videos, and social posts.

Episode 179 Jimmy McGee Live Interview

Episode 179 Jimmy McGee Live Interview

Artist and musician, Jimmy McGee, delivers a soulful new single, “Bottom Line.”

Born and raised in Ohio, Jimmy grew up on rhythm and blues and a household of music. His passion for song began as a young churchgoer listening to the vibrant gospel that echoed off church walls. At age 11, Jimmy picked up the guitar and mastered a new skill. Never finding joy in his schooling, Jimmy McGee turned to music for guidance. At 14, he joined fellow R&B enthusiasts and performed at local venues.

“I am a soul music survivor,” tells Jimmy. From Bobby Womack to Johnny “Guitar” Watson, Jimmy immersed himself in all-things soul from an early age. Decades later, Jimmy McGee brings his never-ending passion for music to the stage with a refined sound. His sound is a smooth blend of R&B, Southern Soul, and Neo-soul, with a spin uniquely his own.

“Bottom Line,” Jimmy McGee’s latest single, opens with bluesy tones, drawing in listeners with a smooth guitar riff as the song takes on depth. Velvety vocals emerge, telling Jimmy’s story.

“What inspired the song was an experience with obstacles. When a person is gifted with song, there is often envy and stuff that goes along with it—it’s only a matter of time. But I refused to give up,” shares Jimmy McGee. “That’s what inspired it—the rigamarole of being a musician. Standing my ground and being myself.”

Jimmy wants listeners to feel encouraged by his song. “I want them to realize that there’s obstacles, but they aren’t the end all be all. People look for a higher power outside, but it’s in ourselves. Self-determination is the key.”

Jimmy sings in the key of determination. “Bottom Line” is life’s ballad. “It’s a reminder to never give up—have perseverance.” In fact, all of Jimmy’s songs are about life and life’s lessons. “Life’s a journey, and these songs are about self-determination,” he adds. “You can get help, but it’s you who has to do it.”

Writing music usually begins with the music. “Usually, I write to the track. The process involves thinking about life, and the words come along with the music.” For the single and many others, Jimmy let life guide his art.

This year, Jimmy McGee is excited to release more music. Listeners can look forward to quarterly releases throughout the year. “I’m ready to get out, sing and perform,” he adds.

Episode 177 Hammaz Live Interview

Episode 177 Hammaz Live Interview

Delaware based rapper Hammaz has been surrounded by music through friends and family his whole life, and most recently he created the album AlphaMale 4: Magnum Opus, which includes the single “Shitz” that will reel in listeners as it is catchy and pops.

“This one is more drill,” Hammaz said of “Shitz” which features MusicByDre. “There’s no playing around. I’m back and letting you know. I want all the shitz, I want all the smoke. I’m coming for it. I’m there for it.”

AlphaMale 4: Magnum Opus wasn’t just whipped together, as Hammaz took his time and selected everything for a reason. Instead of just writing freely, he wrote about specific events and people, and topics that were going on in his life.

There are 12 total tracks on the album that also includes “Boss Talk 2,” “End of the Road,” and a song called “Becky, Karen, Susan,” which he said is a little story about three of his favorite teachers. The song “Again,” is one that shows off his range and has GRAMMY written all over it, Hammaz said.

“I am really proud of the artistic ability for me to jump from different topics and different subjects, and stay in that pocket,” he said.

Hammaz has a versatile style of music, saying that he performs hip-hop most of the time, and is also a great storyteller.

“I’m good in each department,” Hammaz. “Some people bounce from topic to topic, but struggle in different areas like storytelling, club songs, or drill music. I think I have an A plus in all those departments. Every day ain’t the same. Every story ain’t the same. Different things happen.”

Hammaz was born in Jamaica, but he moved to Delaware when he was eight years old where he lived near the Southbridge projects. He grew up with hardship in his life, but it didn’t discourage him, as it actually motivated him to share his life stories. He knows he’s not the only person who has had hard times, and he hopes his talent can have a major impact on listeners who can commiserate.

“I grew up in the hood,” Hammaz said. “Life was like anything else that you see on TV, like in The Wire. Like Brooklyn or Chicago, it’s just that Delaware is small so you don’t really see or hear about the shootings, drug dealings, murders or kidnappings. You don’t hear about it as much, but it happens.”

Hammaz is able to incorporate his upbringing in his work, but he said he doesn’t need to intentionally tell it in his story. He is doing what he loves, and as long as he continues to improve, he feels good about what he is accomplishing.

“I am just like anyone else,” Hammaz said. “I’ve been through adversity, the ups and downs. I have a story to tell just like anybody else. I am pretty sure that everyone who has been through anything, anyone else who is striving for anything can relate.”

Hammaz is inspired by all kinds of music, including hip-hop, R&B, rap, reggae and even country. He also said his inspirations come from his life experiences.

“I just like creating and seeing my thoughts and life story being played out,” Hammaz said.

Hammaz has been around music forever, saying that being from Jamaica, his father and his cousins were into Caribbean style music and DJing.

“When I started playing around with it, I figured I had a little natural knack for it,” Hammaz said. “With a couple unexpected breaks, I was like, you know what? I’m going to make a little lucrative hobby out of it, and before you knew it, it became a nice little career.”

The rapper was underground for years, but Hammaz got his big break when he started the entertainment company Alpha Male Ent. He had the opportunity to record the albums AlphaMale 3 and AlphaMale 4, as well as the yet to be released AlphaMale 5 at Grand Hustle Studios in Atlanta.

AlphaMale 4: Magnum Opus, and the video for “Shitz,” is coming out on April 4. Be sure to keep up to date with Hammaz and his music available on all platforms.

Episode 176 Apollo Liberace Live Interview

Episode 176 Apollo Liberace Live Interview

Apollo Liberace has spent his whole life involved in music, dating back to when he was a just a young child. Now the hip-hop/R&B artist feels that he is putting out some of his best material yet, with his single “If I Said I Had the Answers, Would You Listen” set to be released on his birthday, February 27.

His newest song is an R&B track that will be complete with a music video featuring himself and his girlfriend “Wolves.” It captures the essence of love and being in a relationship, and Apollo Liberace said it is melodic, while also featuring a little bit of rap and indie vibes.

“The song is talking about everything you go through in a relationship,” he said. “The main lyrics are, ‘so cry alone, or you can cry on me if you want to.’ Just talking about two different people in a relationship. It’s displaying all the emotions you go through when you’re happy together. If you love somebody it’s never going to always be great. It’s really who you’re with, to argue with, the rest of your life.”

Also in the works is a single titled “Paradise,” featuring Tyla Yaweh, who has worked with the likes of Post Malone, Chris Brown and Wiz Khalifa.

Down the line, Apollo Liberace has plans to create an EP. He said the first song is mostly R&B, but others will feature him on acoustic guitar with a more “indie-folk” feel.

“It’s a lot different than what I’ve done before,” he said. “I think it’s the best music I’ve made. It’s real and full of emotion, with different stories.”

Apollo Liberace uses life experiences as his source of inspiration when making music. This includes the travel he has done, relationships he has been in, heartbreaks and success along the way.

“The more you do in life, the more your brain expands,” he said. “And once it expands, it doesn’t go back. It changes it in every way. Once you see outside the country, you realize how big the world is. It definitely influences all of it.”

Apollo Liberace started his musical journey at a young age, singing in the church choir and at youth camps. He wrote and recorded his first song when he was 10-years-old while living in San Antonio, Texas. He followed in the footsteps of his older sister, who was producing records and performing. When Apollo Liberace was 12 he had already found success while working alongside his sister, singing originals along with covers of the Jackson 5 and James Brown before turning to the hip-hop scene.

When he was 15 he moved to South Korea due to his parents being on military assignment. While there, he performed as the opening act in the G-Unit Far East Tour, and was eventually signed by Korea Def Jam Far East.

He moved back to the San Antonio where he had a song on the radio at the age of 17, and performed at events with thousands of people every weekend. After a stint in Atlanta and then moving to Los Angeles, Apollo’s hip-hop trio Minus Gravity was signed by Capitol Records and had success making music.

The group split ways after about a decade together, which he said was hard because they were friends he had known since he was a kid. But since then, things have been taking off for Apollo Liberace. He is not only working on putting out new music, but will also be on a Paramount Plus television show with TV personality Chanel West Coast coming out this summer.

The namesake of Apollo Liberace pays homage to the Greek god of music, and also the eccentricity and flashiness of legendary pianist Liberace. He can relate to both, as his style is a bit different than the average person, but also has some edge.

“I really liked his story and his showmanship, basically,” he said. “So I combined those two things.”

He added, “I think that’s what music is: convergence of different feelings and different energies. What I put into the mic or the studio that day, I think that will come out. I hope people catch those same moods and feelings, and I think they will with this new music, for sure.”

Episode 174 Go Away Robot Live Interview

Episode 174 Go Away Robot Live Interview

Electronic punk band Go Away Robot brings listeners a captivating new single featuring their unique cross-genre sound.

The members of Go Away Robot grew up playing in their respective local punk/hardcore scenes before coming together—Jon in the North Bay, Dan in Pacifica, and Alex in Florida. Their moniker was inspired by the negative sentiment towards automated technology, from self-driving cars to AI.

“We started writing dance music mixed with emo and hardcore. Heavier music mixed with electronic music,” shares Alex. They didn’t quite fit in any one genre, so they made a sound of their own.

The single, “Strange Days,” was born in a time that was very unusual, uncomfortable, and downright perplexing at times. Alex was listening to a lot of hip-hop and his vocals were influenced by Lupe Fiasco. “Alex and Jon were in each other’s COVID bubbles and continued writing,” tells the band. “This song is basically about fighting with addiction…and inevitably trading one addiction for another, not ever really solving the problem,” says Jon.

“Strange Days” is the title song on their 3-track album “Strange Days.” The album has a picture of a flaming keyboard on the cover, a keyboard that the band set on fire for this album release.

A mainstay in their music is the prevailing theme of drug and alcohol abuse, alongside other darker topics. “Their album has a lot of imagery on what’s going on in San Francisco as far as drug use and people on the streets,” explains Go Away Robot.

Go Away Robot’s rowdy live performances involve mosh pits, dance offs, and occasional police incidents. Their habit of bringing their own dance club live audio system with them has got them some heat with the authorities.

Whether they are performing live on stage or capturing their sound in the studio, Go Away Robot delivers through and through.

“We make music we want people to dance to, music we want people to hear the lyrics and feel them. Our lyrics are typically sad but with electronic happy parts and more aggressive parts as well.”

In the coming months, Go Away Robot looks forward to sharing more releases with fans.

“We love working on music and want to share it with other people,” tells Alex, as Jon adds, “I just hope they wanna come out to shows and get crazy.”

Episode 173 Alli Fitz Live Interview

Episode 173 Alli Fitz Live Interview

Its seldom that a television show can have as profound an impact on society as Euphoria. The popular HBO series has had a stranglehold on this generation's pop culture by inspiring art, collaborations, and most importantly: music. Alli Fitz’s newest track “When We’re Together” was inspired by the series and helps celebrate love and happiness.

An accomplished social media star, Alli Fitz achieved viral success early by singing, streaming and doing voiceover work on various social media platforms. Alli has amassed a loyal following of over 10 million fans across various social media platforms and has began shifting her focus towards music full time. Alli’s newest track, “When We’re Together,” is a celebration of her newfound love after being single for an extended period of time.

The process of making a music video was an enjoyable one for her, as Alli had a major say in its creation since she is still independent. A newfound creative control and independence has been spearheaded by her manager, Adrian “Auidi” Vazquez. Auidi is the COO/CFO of NOGXNRE, a decentralized record label based in Los Angeles, CA. Having been featured in publications like Billboard Latino, Auidi’s experience in the Judaic industry has proved invaluable to Alli Fitz’s budding music career. She had the autonomy to choose the director and videographer and was free to do her own makeup and styling.

She attended Wright State University for musical theater, where she polished up her singing skills. After graduating, Fitz moved to Los Angeles after creating a Vine account that got her more than five million followers and a billion video views.

Alli said it was such a wild and unexpected feeling to get that kind of acknowledgment. She simply posted an entertaining video, and suddenly people from all over the world were checking out what she was up to. It was an incredible experience for her, and she has met and collaborated with some of her favorite artists along the way.

Alli eventually moved on to TikTok, where she now has seven million followers. For the past several years, she has been focused on releasing her music for the world.

“I released my first single, “Fill the Void,” in 2017, and it was pretty cool,” Alli said. “But I’ve been trying to get more music out and get my name bigger in the music industry instead of just through social media. I’m pretty well known there, but I want to be in the music world, too.”

Alli wants her fans to know that her music is real and comes directly from her life and what she believes in. While her lyrics tend to come from her life experiences, Alli is inspired by listening to her favorite artists. She explained that before she goes on stage, she tends to get nervous, so she’ll watch those artists to see what they do beforehand.

She also tries to look at the way they write their material. Alli pointed out that musicians like Ariana Grande write whatever they want these days, and this inspires her.

“It’s not about what sells,” Alli said. “She writes what she feels, and I love that. So I have started doing that too, and it has been so much fun since then.”

Alli wants to get her music out to the masses to listen to. While she has been able to do this fairly easily through the internet, she also wants people to see what she’s got in person.

“I want to go on tour,” she said. “That’s my number one thing. I want to be able to sing my songs and have people sing them back. I want choreographed dance numbers and costumes—all of that. I want it all. I want to be able to show my music to the world.”

The “When We’re Together” music video is available on March 11. Be sure to check this and the rest of Alli Fitz’s material on all platforms. Lastly, Alli extends a very special thanks to everyone who participated in this project: JV, RandallDidIt, Chazz, Darius Dantzler, Adrian “Auidi” Vazquez, and the entire FilmHead Professionals crew. Episode 171 PRZNT Live Interview

Episode 171 PRZNT Live Interview

In an industry oversaturdsted with artists looking to mimic others’ successes and arounds, it’s always refreshing to hear consistency and growth and that’s what we got from PRZNT’a debut album Night of the Rose. Anchored by two singles “Or Nah” and “Like Pablo,” PRZNT has already smashed his day one streaming record by amassing over 120,000 streams on its debut release. PRZNT is no stranger to massive streaming numbers with more than 120 million streams across platforms, the Cuban-born artist is gaining worldwide recognition with tracks including “Laudy Daudy.” His debut album, Night of the Rose, is out now.

Hailing from Cuba, PRZNT cites Latin music as a heavy influence on his style. “My first love was Michael Jackson— I was heavy on his music when I was younger until I discovered Kid Cudi and Lil Wayne,” he shares.

PRZNT’s introduction to music making began in high school, when he found his friends getting into it and developed his own passion and sound. “Around that time, I used to skip school and create different things until I eventually got decent enough to make music,” adds the artist. Soon after, he met his first manager, who helped elevate his music onto streaming platforms where he found a real fanbase. “From there, everything kept flowing, and we kept going up.” PRZNT eventually caught the attention of NOGXNRE, a decentralized music label pioneering transparency in the music industry. After some negotiations, the two parties signed their first record deal helping catapult PRZNT into a new level of artistry.

The artist’s moniker was originally “Present1k,” a reference to being present in the moment and “not worrying about the future or past.” As he continued to grow as an artist, PRZNT shifted to the current stage name, keeping its meaning intact. “It’s about staying true to the moment,” shares the artist.

Night of the Rose, PRZNT’s debut album, was recently released on March 1. “It’s basically a compilation of the sound I’ve been polishing and perfecting for years,” shares the artist. “This project is completely me. It defines me as an artist and person. It’s a gift from me to the world.”

“Or Nah,” the album’s highlighted single, features the familiar sound his early fans fell in love with: somber melodies on a bed of moody guitars. “It’s for my fans who showed me support from the beginning,” adds PRZNT. The song is equal parts nostalgic, vibrant, and chill.

Instead of focusing on sending a message, PRZNT wants listeners to have fun with “Or Nah.” “I want them to enjoy themselves and have a great time partying with friends, chilling in the car with it, and turning up to the song at my concerts. It’s more of an experience than a meaning,” explains the artist.

“It was a typical writing day for me,” tells PRZNT of the song’s creation. “I came up with the melody for the song, chose the vibe to go for. In more broad terms, it says, ‘are you gonna do something or not going to do it?’ ‘Are you down, or are you not down?’ That’s the whole meaning of the song. It can be about a girl, a moment, or an experience. We started with the full production before adding lyrics and melody, then came up with the ideas for the hooks and verses.”

In addition to “Or Nah,” PRZNT invites listeners should check out the second single “Like Pablo,” one of PRZNT’s favorite songs on the album. “The album is an offering from me to the world about who I am as an artist. It’s what I’ve learned from being an independent artist to having an independent label behind me. I’m staying true to myself no matter what I experience. I put it out there for people to enjoy it.”

Make sure to stay connected to PRZNT on all platforms for new music, videos, and social posts and listen to Night of the Rose on all streaming platforms .

Episode 170 Sophia Mengrosso Live KFSM Radio Interview

Episode 170 Sophia Mengrosso Live KFSM Radio Interview

Sophia Mengrosso is a classically trained opera singer with a wide vocal range that is ever apparent on her newest single “Unforgiven,” scheduled to be released on February 24.

Mengrosso has a hauntingly beautiful, and unique, voice that fits right in with the power of her lyrics and the heavy sound that it complements. This track is about putting the time and work into letting go of someone she loved. It focuses on her efforts to move on and move forward with her life, despite the scars and the pain that it has brought.

Mengrosso wrote this song years ago, but came back to it about a year back when she rediscovered it in a different way. She said that whenever she has a significant personal experience, she will incorporate it into her material because it is helpful to handle what life throws at her. Writing this track was a cathartic experience for Mengrosso.

“When I go through something, I try to put it into my music because this is what gives me a drive to go through stuff,” she said. “It’s so personal. It is about finding strength and finding something that will drive you to achieve what you want. You can find strength in your weaknesses, like pulling out the light from darkness.”

“Unforgiven” is part of a 12 song album that Mengrosso eyes a release for the end of April, and it will also include a recently released single titled “Under.” She is still going through the naming process for the record, and related it to naming a baby because of how much the work means to her. Life experiences are what inspires her work, and she is taking the time to choose the proper name.

Mengrosso has a background in musical education, and is a composer who has been writing music for many years, as well. She started as a classical singer and developed an interest in rock and metal as she grew up. Now she is writing and producing her own music, and she said she couldn’t be happier about her path.

She started her musical journey by playing piano and harp, and then began taking voice classes as a child. Mengrosso writes all her music on the piano, and she said this has helped her in developing her style. She is influenced by opera singers like Maria Callas, Cecilia Bartoli and Nellie Melba, but also listens to plenty of music outside of the classical world. Her wide range of musical taste has helped shape here as a musician.

As a teenager she discovered rock and metal, as she is inspired by bands like Metallica, Evanescence and Nightwish. When she was 16, Mengrosso played covers of Evanescence tunes at a local music festival, which led to her dive into the hard rock genre.

Mengrosso’s music is heavy hitting and powerful, which is something that she loves about the rock genre. She said it gives her room to express herself, especially as a female singer. Having classical training was a great bridge and gave her the confidence in her vocals that has stuck with her.

“Blending the two styles is actually very organic,” she said of classical music and the rock genre. “It’s like a good marriage. They complete each other. I enjoy blending these two components together. It is the process of creation for me, and I need those two tools to create something.”

Mengrosso wants her fans to find strength to pursue their desires, saying her message through her music is to “take whatever you need from what inspires you.”

“I try and tell you to just go and pursue your dreams,” she said. “It doesn’t matter how hard it seems. You have to go through the challenges. You need all this experience to create your own reality. My message is to just go out there and chase your dreams, and go get it. You just have to do it. Be strong and go get what you want.”

Mengrosso has shows lined up for April in Texas, New York and Los Angeles, California. She also has plans to perform oversees over the summer, but plans are still in the works.

Episode 169 Lisa Stirling KFSM Radio Live Interview

Episode 169 Lisa Stirling KFSM Radio Live Interview

Lisa Stirling’s new song “Easy” is a heartbreakingly beautiful piece of music that she has been working on since 2020. It did not come easy.

Various things — she was having a hard time getting songs produced, for one thing, and she was kind of trying to make her mind up about what she wanted to do with her career, even though she is a singer/songwriter who has a band and has performed a lot and was putting out songs.

 “Easy” drops on February 29.

“I don’t know why I put that one on the backburner, because I really do love that song,” she said.

If “Easy” is not, from a listening perspective, a perfect song, a song anyone can love, it will do until one comes along.

The first slow, resounding piano notes grab the emotions and hold them in place for Lisa’s voice, soft and sultry. Up and down the scale, it’s a voice that carries an electric charge.

The music, lyrics and Lisa’s vocals create a poetic meditation on love that is at the same time uplifting and heartbreaking. You would never guess its inspiration.

“When I wrote it,” she said, “I was actually in a relationship that felt like I was slamming my head against a wall. Nothing against him at all, but we were always in fights over everything. We had to work on our relationship all the time, and I was just wanting it to be easy.”

This was during a vacation in a cabin, booked before quarantine but happening as everything shut down.

“Easy” could have been just another love-gone-wrong song but isn’t. It is, instead, a reflection on the nature of love and, like any song, is open to the interpretation of the person listening to it. If it were to get a hundred million streams — and it should, at least — that would be a hundred million interpretations.

“The way I write songs, I like to be straightforward about my feelings and what’s going on in my brain. I write very much in the moment of what I’m feeling,” she said.

“I was going through nothing crazy or profound, but I was just having kind of a difficult year, mentally, I guess.” A job, the vicissitudes of life, a loss of focus — all joined to create, she says, “a lack of motivation.”

“So, I wasn’t doing anything to forward my music career at all, which I regret but, you know, I had to take that year to figure out myself and what I wanted out of life. It made me realize, this year, that I don’t want to do that again. I don’t want to take another year without focusing on what makes me happy.”

“And it’s kind of stuck,” she said.

The songs she has already put out are fine examples of pop music: “Crush,” “For the Weekend,” “See You in Hell,” “Cool Girl” and “In the Dark.”

“I think part of it is aging and maturing as a person. I also feel like my voice became a lot more self realized, starting with ‘Cool Girl,’ then ‘In the Dark’ and now ‘Easy.’ I love all the other music I’ve released, but I feel like those three songs really represent me as an artist.”

She has worked for a long time with producer Javier Cruces. She says that their work together has matured as well.

“The more we work together, the more I feel like we understand each other and can create music as a pair versus just him doing a job for me. We have really started to understand each other in the creative process.”

That, she said, is also a factor in how “Easy,” a song she wrote three years ago, came out of production this year. She gives a lot of credit to Javier and the pianist, Gonzalo Martin.

“I play piano, but just as a tool to write chords. I knew for this one I really needed somebody to bring it to life. He’s an amazing pianist, and he took the vision and ran with it.”

Next up is a song called “Trance,” which is being recorded by Lisa and the Stirlings. They also played on “In the Dark” and “Cool Girl.” More singles will come after “Trance,” she says.

Maybe, “if there’s demand for an EP, then I’ll definitely work on an EP.”

That would be growth worth listening. Connect to Lisa Stirling on all platforms for new music, videos, and social posts.

Episode 168 Sydney B Live Interview

Episode 168 Sydney B Live Interview

Sydney B may be young at 17-years-old, but her music touches on aspects of life that both teens and adults can relate to. Her new track “Beautiful” delves into the world of promoting high self esteem and positivity through her resounding vocals and songwriting skills.

“I want to radiate positivity no matter where I go or what I do,” she said. “All of my music is geared toward positive feelings and creating a world of hope. That’s my goal.”

When she was just getting started, Sydney B’s producer asked her what she wanted to write about. Through discussing it they found that she shared insecurities and life obstacles that are common for not just teenagers, but people of any age.

“I wanted to send a message that says everyone is beautiful in their own way and that no one’s alone,” she said.

“Beautiful” was also used in a new music video that portrays Sydney B at an audition with other musicians practicing and waiting for their turn. The director walked her through the process, as it was being created to show an example of what the music stands for. With her background in music and theater she could relate to what the video was portraying, as it came naturally.

“We have a lot of other people go through the audition process in the video to show that we’re all the same and nobody is greater or less than another,” she said. “We all have our differences and that is what makes us so beautiful in our own way.”

In the new track, Sydney B sings:

“I took a moment just to look in the mirror

Ok I’m ready to take on the world

For every moment I cry

I know these tears have gone dry

Cuz I’m beautiful

I’m beautiful

I tell the world I’m beautiful.”

The mirror analogy is about looking inward, she said, as it can be difficult to do when being focused on what’s on the outside. This can be about your personal feelings or what you perceive people see you as.

“The point of that is to look inside and find what is beautiful within you,” she said. “Everyone has beautiful traits and beautiful qualities within themselves, and when you tap into that it can create your passion or life’s calling.”

Sydney B began singing in a choir when she was nine, and then became involved in musical theater in middle school. While she grew up in a family that was more sports focused, she said it was music what really sparked her interest.

“I got into music and it was something that I never wanted to stop,” Sydney B said. “I always wanted to be singing. No matter how long any rehearsal was, I’d want to be there the whole time. I never got bored. It was where I found my passion and something I really loved.”

She is inspired by her vast influences from all sorts of musical genres, as she loves music as a whole and not just a specific part of it. One thing is for sure about her style: she is promoting hope through her lyrics and uplifting beats.

The Atlanta based musician found herself through music. She wants to use this to spread this message, as it has helped her greatly in life.

“I’m not all the way there and I don’t know if I ever will be,” she said. “I think that’s part of what makes my music, my music. It’s not perfect and I’m not perfect, and I think that’s an important message for everyone to hear.”

Sydney B has about a dozen songs that she says are on the horizon to be released in the near future. Keep up with Sydney B and check out her music available on all major platforms.

Episode 167 Daneka Nation Live Interview

Episode 167 Daneka Nation Live Interview

Rhett Daneka, who goes by the moniker Daneka Nation, wasn’t always a singer. He spent years flying planes in various capacities, but after meeting a friend who taught him the craft, he knew singing was the life for him.

Daneka Nation has released a new single titled “Sacred Ground,” which is a Kix Brooks penned tune that describes what a high school pal had gone through in life.

“It’s kind of a story of my best friend in high school,” Daneka said. “He got out of high school and the first thing he wanted to do was have kids. So we graduated in May, and he was already out hitting the clubs on Fridays and Saturday nights. He was a great country western dancer. Well, he found a woman who he got pregnant and had kids. He just couldn’t wait. It’s really kind of my best friend’s story.”

He pointed out that the storyline touches anyone who went through a similar situation, or anyone who knows young parents working their tails off to get by.

Daneka feels that “Sacred Ground” is the best track that he has recorded, and it has had airplay in South America and Europe. The track has more than 200,000 listeners on Spotify, and Daneka is relishing in the fact that it is taking off.

Daneka Nation’s creative style is a unique one, as he works with an Argentinian multi-instrumentalist named Ariel who plays every instrument on “Sacred Ground.” Ariel will put together the music, and send it to Daneka to review before he gets in the studio. Daneka then lays down his baritone vocals along with some background singers to complete the track.

Daneka is a former pilot who worked as a chief flight instructor, and also flew an air ambulance rescuing premature babies from small Texas towns. Due to being partially color blind, Daneka stopped flying and became self-employed. This is when he also discovered his love for singing.

“I learned a couple songs and went to karaoke bars, and wasn’t very good,” Daneka said. “Finally I ran into an 87-year-old man who was 80% blind. He was a quartet singer who had been singing since he was six. So he couldn’t drive, and I couldn’t sing, so we paired up and he taught me basically everything about how to sing over a period of three or four years.”

Daneka said they would go out as much as six times a week, hitting multiple karaoke bars. Eventually his karaoke buddy passed away, but Daneka’s love for music and belting out vocals lived on.

“I started lining things up to get the best people around me,” Daneka said. “I got the best guitar players, bass players, drum players and started making music in 2021.”

The first song he made a Doug Stone cover called “In a Different Light,” which he changed up into more of a “rock/country” song.

“I’ve got a post-it note in my bathroom with three goals,” he said. “Number one is to make it in the music industry. The second one is to play sold out arenas. The third is to play Rodeo Houston- the biggest rodeo in the world.”

Daneka Nation has been writing his own material, but he has not gotten into the recording process yet. He has a big binder to pull lyrics from to create songs of his own down the road. Daneka said that when he gets his band together, it will be a family friendly event where he always puts in 110%.

One thing is certain for Daneka Nation: He is persistent and plans to put everything he’s got into his music.

“I refuse to be a one hit wonder,” Daneka said. “If you made it as a one hit wonder, you made enough money to pay someone to write you another hit song. I will never understand a one hit wonder. Daneka Nation will never be that. I don’t care if I have to go to California, or Nashville, or wherever I have to go to make a hit song. I’m all in.”

Episode 166 Sotly Live Interview

Episode 166 Sotly Live Interview

Hip-hop artist SOTLY Shawn wants his fans to know two things about him: never expect his sound to stay the same, and listening to his music is like getting a “home cooked meal.”

“You might have some fast food, and that’s always good,” he said. “But there’s nothing like being in your mother’s or grandma’s house and getting that home cooked meal. That’s what I feel like I am. You know that’s what you’re getting when you listen to SOTLY Shawn.”

The Brooklyn based rapper has has just released a new single called “Standin’” off his EP titled Day by Day.

“The message in the song is that no matter what, he’s still standing,” he said. “No matter what, he’s going to the top, he’s going to still stand. Whatever happens- we try to ignore the negativity, push the positivity, and that’s what we’re going with.”

“Standin’” is the outro track on the five song EP, which he said was created at a fairly chaotic time. There was stress about work and about finishing the project he was working on, and much of this is reflected in the songs.

The first track titled “Still” coincides with “Standin’” in a way that they are bookends to the project. The second song, “No Doubt” reflects on the experiences his mom had when working a 9-5 job. This is followed by “The Soul” and “Tonight.”

“All throughout that EP, the idea behind it is pushing through and not becoming so one-track minded,” he said. “With all the problems in your 9-5, or all the problems in your life, you have to look at everything in a big picture kind of way.”

SOTLY stands for “someone out there loves you,” and this is a mantra that he lives by and promotes.

“That’s like my whole message at the end of the day,” he said. “No matter what you’re going through…if you’re working a job that sucks or if you’re going through doubt, depression, uncertainty, anything, just know it's all a part of the process. Somebody out there cares about you. Make the decision to never give up on yourself and finding those answers, because someone out there loves you. They want to see you win. Even if it's just me, I want to see you win.”

He added, “Les Brown said once that your struggle will be the blueprint to someone’s survival.”

SOTLY Shawn pulls his inspiration from his own life, as well as aspects that his friends and those close to him have gone through. He’ll often put himself in other peoples’ shoes to get different perspectives about what is wrong and what is right.

“I try to dig from those personal experiences, but also try to incorporate as many sides of it that I possibly can,” he said. “It’s never going to be just black and white, so this gives me a plethora of things to pull from when looking at it from different perspectives.”

When he makes a song he starts with the melody, but then once that is situated, he might add something like a rain effect to evoke emotions. He focuses on conveying feelings on the beat, whether it is a simple drum pattern or something more complex.

Making beats has been a love of SOTLY Shawn’s for years, dating back to when he started listening to J. Cole at the age of nine. SOTLY Shawn saw similarities between themselves early and got drawn into his music. He knew then that he needed to make music of his own.

“That’s what made me want to start making my beats,” he said. “When I make beats, that’s when I really pull from shows I watch, sounds that I hear, and visual aspects. To me, beats can be visual if you make them in a certain way.”

SOTLY Shawn has a goal of connecting to as many people as he can through music.

“I want to be a part of every aspect of your life musically,” he said. “If you’re sad, I’ve got a song for that. If you’re working out, I’ve got a song for that. The goal really is to connect to people in different ways.”

Episode 165 Richard Peshkin Live Interview

Episode 165 Richard Peshkin Live Interview

“The World Needs Music,” the title track for composer Richard Peshkin’s recently released album, is a fun, beautiful pop song that shares a royal lineage in both its musical heritage and message.

“It’s fairly obvious that the world is in a total state of disunity, chaos and disharmony,” said Richard, “and there’s so little that unites people and so much that creates divisions.”

And music, he said, is one of the two things he’s seen that unites people. The second is sports.

Then there’s music.

“When you go to a concert, and you have 40 thousand or 50 thousand people, and some are white and some are brown, some are yellow, some are gay, some are straight and some are everything,” he said, “and they’re all there in unity to celebrate the power and the beauty of music.”

And now there’s “The World Needs Music”:

The world is an angry place to be

We’ve got to sing, not shout

We need to figure it out

A way to sing away the hurt we feel today

Let’s put it in a song it’s better

The song, beautifully sung by Kelsey Demsky, who also stars in the video, was produced by Mick James, known for his work on Criss Angel’s Mindfreak show. Mick was the producer for the entire album, which features Kelsey as the female vocalist and Dan Brenner as the male vocalist.

Richard, a retired physician, has been writing songs since he was 10, when he copyrighted his first song, “Nadine.” He has been composing ever since. In 2019 he wrote the music and lyrics for a musical comedy, Boca Bound,” which was on the ballot for Grammy nomination.

The 10 tracks of “The World Needs Music,” the first recording he has released, have attracted a wide audience so far. A second album, again featuring Kelsey, Dan and Mick, is ready for release around March, and a third is in process.

He writes his own music and lyrics.

“That’s something I pride myself in,” he said. “Some of my musical heroes did, some didn’t, and it’s kind of neat to do both, so you don’t have to answer to any critics.”

“Burt Bacharach has had an enormous effect on me in my life through his music. I’ve seen him in concert in various venues throughout my life, and his music has meant more to me than I could ever put into words. The lyrics written by Hal David, of course, were unbelievable.”

“The World Needs Music” is “kind of an homage to that song but brought up into another time period where people can celebrate the unifying value of music.”

“We can all sing together and maybe put aside our differences,” he said.

He hopes that his song will become an anthem for things that bring people together.

“When I wrote it, Mick, my producer-arranger, and I discussed the instrumentation and everything because we wanted it to sound like something you could sing at a high school or middle school, a grammar school or college. I could always picture young children singing it together in harmony — there’s a lot of harmonies in that song — before they learn how to hate.”

The album is a demonstration of what he wants music to do for people.

“What I want is for people to do what I do — sing the music, feel better because of the music, get out of a funk maybe, enhance things. Like, if I’m in love, make me feel love more. If you’re sad, music can make you happy. If you’re happy, music can make you happier.”

“Right after ‘Shut Up’ is a beautiful ballad called ‘I Love You.’ I’m constantly aware of balancing those things,” he said.

Episode 164 Ren.y.c Live Interview

Episode 164 Ren.y.c Live Interview

Up-and-coming hip-hop artist, ren.y.c is ready to take 2024 by force. Her new single, “Wicky” set for release on January 12, 2024, tackles social issues with a rhythmic punch.

Ren.y.c’s personal style of gritty trap and drill beats—laced with catchy melodies—tells real stories. Her emotional approach is authentic and thought provoking. The artist finds inspiration during everyday events, from riding in the car to working out. Her devotion to God is also reflected in her music and heartfelt stories.

Ren.y.c isn’t afraid to tell you the truth—and make it sound good as she does it. “The beats are hip hop, but the way I go on is a little less so,” tells ren.y.c. “It’s still rap and hip hop but less hardcore.”

Her new single, “Wicky,” was motivated by her passion for raising social awareness. While the song itself has subtle references to school shootings, the video is “more in your face” according to the artist. “I wanted people to listen to the song a lot and spread awareness,” says ren.y.c of her subtle approach to writing “Wicky.” “Yet the more you hear it, the more you think about the message.”

To write “Wicky,” ren.y.c approached songwriting by way of freestyling. “I got the concept during the creation process, but I didn’t know if I’d stick with it. Then I freestyled and liked how it came out. Something happened and the whole second part got erased so I had to redo it. I didn’t go back to the song for a long time, but then one day I went back and did it.” Fortunately for listeners, ren.y.c didn’t let the song disappear into a creative black hole.

“When I was younger, I always loved music, but I never thought that was something I could do,” shares the artist. Ren.y.c didn’t reach a crossroads to decide her fate. Instead, she just decided to go all in one day, and the people in her life were fully supportive.

Coming up with a stage name, however, proved to be more of a challenge than committing to life as a musician. “I was putting off releasing music because I couldn’t think of a name. My friend actually suggested ‘ren.y.c’ during a Group FaceTime. I didn’t decide on it but everyone kept calling me that, so it stuck.”

Up next for the artist is another single, titled “Sick,” due in late winter. Her goal for 2024 is to “keep working every day.” We can’t wait to hear the output of her dedication.

Make sure to stay connected to ren.y.c on all platforms for new music, videos, and social posts.

Episode 161 Minus A.I LIVE interview

Episode 161 Minus A.I LIVE interview

Musical audiobook producer, Minus A.I., showcases the potency of storytelling in his latest single, “The Sphere.” This track, a standout from his album, Killer Donuts Musical Soundtrack immerses listeners in the enthralling world of Minus A.I.—all through the power of sound.

As a visionary and musical adventurer, Minus A.I.'s work spans alternative indie rock, mainstream pop, and country pop, leaving room for exploration. Specializing in musicals, this indie artist has amassed a fanbase in less than two years. His previous single, “Ecstasy,” enjoyed regular airplay in San Francisco.

Minus A.I. has dabbled in various genres, but he gravitates towards his strengths. "I ventured into rap with the song ‘Killer Donuts Musical’, but I would be disheartened if Eminem were to critique my rap skills. I don’t see myself as a rapper; instead, I draw inspiration from artists like ‘Twenty One Pilots’ for arrangement.

While Minus A.I. may not be the top rapper, he is no stranger to the hip-hop scene. He once received invaluable advice at a concert event hosted by Teddy Bear the promoter, where he encountered DJ Khaled in the VIP area at Club Cinema, just before Khaled’s international success with Rick Ross.

Hailing from Tampa Bay, Florida, Minus A.I. infuses his music with real-life experiences. ‘Killer Donuts Musical’ narrates the struggle of a man who loses everything in a Florida hurricane. Another unreleased track, “Make a Change,” addresses how the majority of people, regardless of their actions, are affected by the current climate crisis," the artist adds. In the musical, after “The Sphere” intro, the protagonist packs up and leaves a hurricane-stricken area in Florida, drives across the country to the west coast, and finally settles near Las Vegas.

Minus A.I.’s humble beginnings can be traced back to when his family sought refuge in the United States, far from the war in their home country.

As a teenager, he was part of a band with his current full- time guitarist. When Minus was a sampler DJ in the duo, they came close to signing with a major label. Although his bandmate declined the opportunity, Minus A.I. continues to seek his advice. “He predicted two other times who would be the next big thing and got it right. So, I asked him what I should release for the first single from the album & he said, ‘The Sphere.’” And so, it was. “I don’t know who I was making it for,” Minus A.I. muses about his album. “I was thinking about the sphere in Vegas & a donut shop & taco stop In West Hollywood, owned by Danny Trejo & some taco shops in California owned by Paul Walker’s brother "Caleb". "It would be nice to somehow see those two businesses merged together".

Also featured on his album is the love song “Whatever It Takes,” a heartfelt tribute to Madonna while she was recuperating in the hospital. The album cover of Madonna’s record adorned his recording space as he crafted the song. In addition to promoting his new work, Minus A.I. is on the hunt for the perfect female vocalist for his next single. The track, is an emotional piano ballad about an expectant mother, it is yet to be produced. “To deliver one of those ballads, the singer needs to be exceptionally talented. No man on earth would know what it’s like to be the person who can bring a new life into the world. So, I don’t see myself performing the ballad,” he adds.

Be sure to stay connected with Minus A.I. across all platforms for new music, videos, and social posts.

Episode 160 Zay Grastley LIVE Interview

Episode 160 Zay Grastley LIVE Interview

Zay Grastley has always loved music, from Country to Rap to Reggae and just about everything in between. It has been this love for music of all kinds, the impact that this passion has had on his life that inspired Grastley to take on a musical career of his own. Now releasing his own songs, he spends his time creating something to inspire others the way his favorites have inspired him.

Most recently Grastley’s music has taken a dive into his Country roots with the new song “Southern Charm”. The track is bold and easy to listen to, and is certainly a love song for the life he’s lived.

“‘Southern Charm’ is the country boy’s theme song,” Grastley said. “It’s for the few of us who are able to really go after our dreams.” In reality, “Southern Charm” is the story of Grastley’s own life and experiences while growing up as a southern boy in North Carolina.

The song was written after Grastley’s recent return to his home state, after some time spent living out in Arizona. The song really dives into the feeling of being home and all of the good feelings that come out of that.

“I want my music to remind people that life is about having fun,” Grastley explained. “It’s more than just getting through the day. It’s about making an effort to live.”

Following the release of “Southern Charm”, Grastley is excited about everything that is to come in 2024. Not only is he preparing for a tour sometime during the upcoming year, he is also working his way towards the release of several new projects. “I am expecting to release my newest single before the end of the year,” he explained. “And cannot wait to share my next EP, which I am expecting to come out in April.”

Grastley alludes that his upcoming EP is going to “something completely different and utterly timeless”, and is sure to be something all of his listeners will want to keep an eye out for.

Along with these exciting new releases and upcoming show dates, Grastley is looking forward to spending the next year expanding his reach and sharing his music with as many people as possible. “I would love to be the kind of artist that everyone in the household can know and enjoy,” he said. “I want to become one of the classics.”

There is truly so much that this artist has to offer, and you will not want to miss out on all that is to come.

Episode 159 Aurora Takeover Live Interview

Episode 159 Aurora Takeover Live Interview

Hyperpop musician Aurora Takeover focuses on creating songs with relatability, and he has released a brand album EP titled Misery, (Part 2 Independent) that touches on the theme of a drug relapse. Aurora Takeover, 24, was born and raised in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, and has been singing and writing his music since he was young. He went to college in New Hampshire to study audio engineering, but quickly found out that college wasn’t for him. He started teaching himself how to mix on FL Studio, and began writing his first album, “The Darkest Light.” His first release was a single called “Walls.” He left college after a year and was jumping from job to job, but it was stagnant to him. During this time he was always somewhat depressed about his scenario, thinking there was an unfilled void. He said he was drinking a little too much, was going out multiple times a week, and this is when he discovered he has the ability to really hone in on peoples’ feelings. While Aurora Takeover wasn’t into drugs himself, he said that he found out through experiences in college that he is extremely empathetic with people. “Honestly, I personally kind of hate it,” Aurora Takeover said. “Being out all the time, at dive bars, I would feel people’s energy and what they’re going through. I would see drug use everywhere. I’m not a drug person or anything, but from feelings I had I would put myself in their shoes and mimic what they were feeling to understand them. I don’t mean to do it, but it’s just how it always goes.”

This led to his decision to make a concept album. Instead of just putting out singles he wanted to make a “work of art” and have everything linked together. The idea was to write Misery. He was putting singles out for it, started using different producers, and that’s when his current producer Get2Gether found him and helped him polish what he has put together.

“I released the first half, part one, that is called Dependent,” Aurora Takeover said. That part of the album is supposed to be about a guy going through drugs. Like that guy is really fucked up on drugs. He is wicked dependent and an AI voice says we need an outside source to help us: Ms. Enable. She leaves him because she can’t carry his baggage anymore.”

Back New” and “Dreaming.” “See You Die” has already been released and he sees “Dreaming” as being something big.

Aurora Takeover comes up with a melody on top of a beat that he finds, and goes from there. He then takes AI generated voices to use for talking points within the songs to help further drive the story. “It is very interesting, intricate and stuff I haven’t heard before,” he said.

“I feel like I’m sitting on something that could really catch and it scares the living shit out of me” he said. “After listening all the way through I was terrified because I was like, this could really be it. This could really skyrocket me. That’s scary.”

Aurora Takeover has been inspired by his newest album so much that he already has more in the works for the future. He has a project in the works called Egocentric, which is also a concept album. He said teasers on the internet have led people to reach out to him and tell them how impressed they were. He said this jacked up his confidence a bit, and he thought the idea of having an inflated ego would also be a cool concept.

“That’s my next journey: writing about having an ego and how it can be destroyed,” said Aurora Takeover.

Misery (Part 2 Independent) is set to be released on December 5 and it can be found on all major platforms.

Episode 158 Fortitude LIVE Interview

Episode 158 Fortitude LIVE Interview

If the artist Fortitude’s musical style had a name, it might be Wisconsin rap. For one thing, he was born and raised in Wisconsin. For another, his rap has a straightforward, upper–Midwestern vibe to it. The lyrics, fast or slow, carry an unassumingly narrative, poetic quality.

They say something. “Fortitude,” the highlight single from his album Manhattan, dropping November 6, is about different kinds of courage and strength. It is told in scenes from wars America has been in.

He doesn’t quite know how to describe his style. “I’m not sure what to call it myself,” he said. “It can be introspective at times, and then other times it can be — oh, I don’t know — descriptive of things.” He says he would call it hip-hop, because it is rap, but more rap than hip-hop.

“It’s funny, because when I play it in my truck the computer identified it as electronica, so there’s a bit of that in there. My producer really kind of gets into that kind of stuff. So, he’s put a little of this flair to it.”

The album’s music was inspired by Kendrick Lamar, one of his favorites, and one he cites as a heavy influence on him. Fortitude, 28, has been making music since he was 19 and rapping since he was 23.

“Some people define certain parts of Kendrick Lamar’s rap as either introspective rap or consciousness rap,” he said. His own lyrics have some of both in them, “but I wouldn’t say it’s exact.” His influences are wide. A very partial list is Pink Floyd, Alice in Chains, grunge rock, the indie band Alt-J. Among rappers, the early Drake and A$AP Rocky join Kendrick Lamar.

His music is not fun music, but it is fascinating to get into the lyrics and the music behind them. It is not music to dance to or music to have in the background. It demands attention to what it is saying.

The beats, melodies and instrumentation behind his rap vary widely, and he wants to give credit to his producer Seyed (Amir Omrani).

“Some of the songs, he’s running the show, and other songs, I was running how the rap was going but he was running everything else. So, you’re hearing the creation of two people.”

Some of his lyrics he writes to specific beats, he said, and others “were poems, initially.” “Most of the songs were written differently, and I wrote various flows and melodic tones.”

His tracks tell stories and are about something, as in “Fortitude” being about different kinds of courage. “The idea of the song is about the virtue of fortitude. The different sections represent different things. In the beginning you have the tough soldier responding to combat. He’s just pushing through.”

The second part is about a more difficult kind of courage. The song has scenes from different wars, World War I and II and Vietnam.

The last section is about Vietnam veterans who came home, not to a hero’s welcome, but to what was at best indifference and at worst open hostility. “He just doesn’t feel like a hero anymore. There’s courage in the face of battle, and then there’s courage in the face of being at odds with the people that you fought for. It’s a different kind of courage, a different kind of fortitude.”

Fortitude is an Army veteran himself. He never had to deploy in combat, but he wanted to honor the veterans of American wars. He is remarkably free of ego in his creations, and he is in full control of his ambition. He creates music for the act of creating. “I just want to continue to create for as long as I’m inspired to continue to create. I don’t really have any aspirations for fame, or for a career. If this is music that people like, and people listen to it, and I gain some money for it, then that’s something. Or if people ask me to perform, I would perform. I’ve done it before. Primarily, I want to work.”

Episode 157 Luke ATME LIVE Interview

Episode 157 Luke ATME LIVE Interview

“It’s a breakup song,” explains the artist, who was inspired by the end of a relationship. “At the beginning, it had a sad tone. It was not depressing but romantic, like drowning in your feelings. I started writing it after a breakup with my partner. Then I stopped for six months. When I got back into the studio with it, I didn’t quite like where it was going so I changed the direction. I wanted to bring a good feeling to the song—romantic and nostalgic at the same time.”

“Pull Me Closer” plays on the state of mind of breaking up with someone because it’s not the right time for you to be together—no cheating or any reasons to break up necessarily. “It’s about needing to prioritize other things at that time,” shares Luke. “Neither wants to break up. Both are in love with each other. But there are situations and family and other important things all at that time. It’s not the right time to be together.”

Born and raised in Naples, Italy, Luke ATME ignited his passion for music as a teenager, when he began recording covers for online audiences. From the age of 12, Luca took on roles in high school musicals and enjoyed performing in and watching shows. “I really had the feeling I wanted to become a musician,” shares the singer. “My father brought me to see musicals and concerts of Italian singers.”

In 2017, the young musician graduated from the University of West London for music performance and released his first EP, “Loudest!,” in the UK. He went on to win multiple awards including a Golden Award for “Song of the Year,” the AAA4Success Award, and the Golden Award for “Artist of the Year,” as well as the “Premio Internazionale di Poesia.”

“Pull Me Closer”—written and sung in English—is distinct from the artist’s usual sound. “It’s a different song from what I usually do,” he shares. “I’m usually more Latin, or Pop, but this is R&B/Soul. It’s a different vibe. It’s fun to experiment with this other side of my artistry,” he adds.

When the song was originally written, it featured an instrumental track with minor chords. “It was a really sad tone on the piano, with a background drum beat and kick—but the piano chords made it sadder,” tells Luke. It was then that the singer decided to keep the parts he loved but uplifted the chords (while preserving the instruments). He also added a kick for an R&B soul sound. “We changed the chords into major to not be as sad.” From there, he changed some of the lyrics, particularly in the chorus, to feature a more positive message. “It’s hopeful, constant, and nostalgic,” adds the artist. In addition to the upcoming release of his single, Luke is also working on a few shows. Next year, the artist will release a full EP—completely in Spanish—that he just recorded in Madrid.

“I really show a different side of me in these songs,” tells Luke ATME. “This time is challenging. I’m nervous because it’s a different side of me I haven’t shown before. My listeners aren’t used to this kind of song from me. I’m excited to put it out and see what people think.”

Episode 156 Spendit LIVE Interview

Episode 156 Spendit LIVE Interview

To begin his career as a recording artist, Buffalo, New York, rapper Spendit has put out “Hold Up,” a chiming, melodious single with some hard-edged, explicit street lyrics.

“That track, I feel like, it describes my life,” he said. “I’m always trying to get to some money, and it’s an ever-changing world. I’m always trying to adapt.”

“Hold Up” is the lead single off his EP Check. Another single off the EP, “Grace,” has also been released.

He said that when he got the beat from his brother, Akaey, he only had an hour to work with it, and his first thought was, “I cannot attack this in an hour, and all I could think of was life is moving too fast. Can you hold up?”

He’s been writing for a few years but until this year he hadn’t made up his mind whether to pursue it as a career.

“I was never into music growing up. I was kind of getting into it in middle school, but I was more of an athlete. That’s what our family was known for.”

Akaey, though, was into music. “He was the only person in the family doing it. At night he would play his beats, and I was in my room but because he was so close I could hear him. He would be up to 3 in the morning.”

Eventually, he said, “This was clicking. I could listen to songs, and it was, ‘Oh, he’s off beat. This one’s not off beat.’ I was observing even when I wasn’t trying to.”

Spendit works out his beats with Akaey and producer Losart, a childhood friend of Akaey’s. They find the beats for Spendit, and together the three of them work out the tracks.

“Whenever I’m done with a song and I need another one, they will send me a care package — that’s what we call them — and it’s like 100-some beats in there.”

Spendit wound up making three songs with the beat that became “Hold Up.” “I kept hearing it differently every time I listened to it. It is definitely a unique beat, for sure. The other two I’ll probably break down and add them to different songs, because they’re quality as well. But this one, ‘Hold Up,’ this one got it.”

He wrote the EP a year ago, but even then he hadn’t made up his mind about music.

“I wasn’t sure if I really wanted to take it serious. My brother had been doing this for a while, and he knows the only way that you can make it in this industry is if you’re going to invest in yourself, invest in the time. And so I had to come to the realization of, ‘Is this really what I want to do?’ After months of thinking about it, I told him let’s go ahead and do it.” This year, he has released Check and the two singles from it. Each of the six tracks is something new, a different sound, a different flow, a different feel. Spendit seeks new things.

“I’m open to like working with different styles, and not just rappers but singers because that’s how you get better, by doing things that you don’t think or don’t know if you can do. I want to be a person that’s like, ‘Hey, we’re making this song, and it’s not something that you’re used to.’ I want to be as versatile as possible.”

His plans are to put out another EP, with more videos. His YouTube channel has videos for “Hold Up” and “Grace,” but he wants more.

This winter, he will begin performing live in the Buffalo-Syracuse-Rochester region.

He is glad that he got a late start to his career because he believes it increased his creativity. “As soon as I get in the studio, man, it’s like everything just comes. I don’t plan on slowing down no time soon.”

Episode 155 Jett Jenkins LIVE Interview

Episode 155 Jett Jenkins LIVE Interview

With her newest release — a cover of Fiona Apple’s “Daredevil” — indie pop artist Jett Jenkins departs from the “dreamy, colorful production” of her last few releases and shows all the assertiveness and force of Fiona Apple’s original.

“Fiona Apple’s my favorite artist, and the album that ‘Daredevil’ is off of is the first one that really got me hooked into her music,” said Jett. Jett’s “Daredevil” drops on November 17.

“That song really showed me how she can use emotion in her singing, and the bridge of that song was just so special to me — I loved it so much that I wanted to sing it myself.”

Jett’s voice has softer edges than Fiona’s, yet when she launches into that bridge she is every bit as commanding — “Seek. Me. Out. — every word an order to be obeyed.

“It’s a song that I love so much I wish I wrote it, so, the best thing I could do was sing it. It’s kind of a declaration of love to Fiona Apple, but it’s my own version, and it’s how I hear the song and how it — my interpretation of it musically — how it makes me feel.”

And the listener. “I wanted to keep it similar because I love the song so much, but I also wanted to make it a little bit more modern, make it more my style, so, it has a bit of flair.”

The EP that “Daredevil” precedes, Break Cover, Volume 1, will be, as the name suggests, an EP of cover songs. Her live shows include cover songs, and she gets good feedback on them.

“I wanted to choose some of my favorite artists and songs and put them out. A lot of my favorite artists, like Phoebe Bridgers and Fiona Apple, have released cover songs, but I thought it would be really interesting to do a whole EP of them.”

The planned release for the EP is December 2.

“I think I tend to go toward meditative stuff because I consider myself more of a poet,” she said,

Jett, a Texas writing major attending college in Brooklyn, New York, says she is willing to go wherever her music will take her.

“I’ll always put out music even if it doesn’t get super big or even just big at all, because I am such a diehard fan of all music. I’d love if it could take me to a bigger place where I could meet people and share my music. My music is very personal and has helped me through a lot of hard times. I hope that my music can help other people.”

She is moving back toward the edginess of “City of Anger,” which was the first song she ever wrote and is still one of her favorites.

“To me, it was like the perfect first song because I Ioved the rock element, but it also felt a lot like meditations on grief. It was just a plethora of things that I loved about music.”

Her next album after Break Cover will be more in that direction and “more into indie-punk rock, and a little bit like new wave.”

“I’m definitely trying to write more aggressive stuff. Most of my favorite songs are very anger filled songs, and I’m kind of going towards that.”

Episode 154 Honey Made LIVE Interview

Episode 154 Honey Made LIVE Interview

It has been a long road with many twists and turns, but Austin based funk group Honey Made has released their newest EP called Charge It To The Band Fund, which has an eclectic mix of soul, funk, a little hip hop and plenty of horns.

The newest single, “Ashy Pockets (My Mode)” is a remix of an original track that was very much focused on the “green culture,” McDaniel explained. Producer John Ryan liked the chorus and hook of “Ashy Pockets” and wanted to rework the arrangement and lyrics for radio that is now being released on the new EP.

Honey Made is a nine piece funk band consisting of: Willie Barnes, Vocals; Donald Ford Jr., vocals; Brian Cokeley, Keys; Lee Braverman, Bass; Chris Barnes, Drums & Vocals; Mark Saldana, Percussion; Dustin Hunter, Tenor Saxophone & Baritone Saxophone; Joseph Marrow, Trumpet & Flugelhorn; and Donald McDaniel, Trombone.

Honey Made as a group came onto the Austin music scene in 2018, but their story goes back to 2014 when members of the band went by Mama K and the Shades. Mama K and the Shades was founded by saxophonist David McKnight and singer Kelsey Garcia. While they had a great run, in 2015 tragedy struck after a show they were playing in San Marcus just south of Austin. The venue they were playing at had a beach theme, and after the gig, members of the band decided to swim in the San Marcus river. McKnight went in the water and never came back up. The band gathered afterward and decided that David would have wanted them to keep performing following his death.

The name change made things tough, as they had established themselves with their former moniker and they were struggling to get gigs and they had debts to pay off from the making of Brand New.

The wild journey continued, and just as they were getting started the COVID-19 pandemic put a stop to all momentum. They wrote music and rehearsed as much as they could and put out “stay at home sessions.”

“The music that is on the new EP was written largely while we were isolated,” McDaniel said. “We kept creating even though we couldn’t get out.”

The EP is set for release in November 17 and will be available on all major platforms. It features seven very different tracks with a wide range of emotions emitting from the tunes. It has all the elements a funk album should have, whether it is the fun loving “Get On Up” and “Vibin”, the soulful R&B sound of “Upstairs and “Love It”, the relatable aspect of being fed up in songs like “Ashy Pockets (My Mode)” and “FYC” , or a song of gratitude like “DFA”-standing for D-Bone Funk Amazing named after McDaniel, who plays trombone, and what he’s done for the band.

“When you listen to this EP, you’ll see that we just refuse to be defined by a single genre,” McDaniel said. “We don’t just play the heck out of a single sound. That’s not us. In this record there’s a little more hip hop influence, but then there are songs like ‘Upstairs’ that is like an old MoTown sound.”

He added, “We are just a really, really good live band.”

McDaniel loves the diversity of the group, with multiple ethnicities and age ranging from late 20s to Donald’s age of 68-years-old. He said music is a unifier, and people of different walks of life can get on the same page through it.

“I really love these guys and they’re an excellent group of musicians,” said McDaniel. “Everything I’ve ever done for the band is because I truly believe in these musicians. I want us all to be successful. This business is a real grind and it is hard, but I think our music is really good. The only reason we do it is for the music at the end of the day.”

Episode 153 Heatstroke Live Interview

Episode 153 Heatstroke Live Interview

Canadian rock band Heatstroke releases their new single, “Times Square Claire,” following a young man who confuses lust for love. This track marks a pivotal chapter within the band’s debut album, Empire Statement. While most of Heatstroke's music is reminiscent of classic rock, this new single stands apart, emanating an undeniable pop sensibility. The rich vocals over the straightforward verse-chorus-verse structure make this a standout entry in their catalog. With catchy hooks and an infectious groove, “Times Square Claire” showcases Heatstroke's versatility and ability to captivate a broader audience while retaining their signature sound. “We all come from different backgrounds in terms of what we like musically, so we have influences of punk, hard rock, and some of that classic Led Zeppelin style,” shared lead singer Orion Anderson.

Empire Statement is a concept album about a boy named Jacey Finn growing up in Brownsville, NY, in the '70s & '80s. Despite the pull of poverty, he finds a way to escape and improve his life. Over the course of eleven songs, Jacey's life story unfolds. “Times Square Claire” is the fifth track on this album, and at this point in the narrative, Jacey is fifteen years old, and the year is 1980. He’s hanging out in Times Square when he meets Claire. She's a prostitute, but he’s too naïve to realize it. They fall in love and create a whole new life.   “While every album may not be a concept album, storytelling is paramount for us, agreed all members of Heatstroke. “After all, a song is only as strong as what you have to say.” Tonally, the album is a true blast from the past and an indicator of Heatstroke’s style of music. New listeners might think they're hearing something from the seventies or eighties, but the band only formed in October 2021. It was an organic connection. Troy Kirkwood (drummer) and Orion Anderson (lead singer) met in high school. Hunter Larabie (bass) and Anderson met while working at a clothing store, and Daniel Beaton (guitarist) met Anderson in college. “We are also really excited for listeners response to ‘Broadway’ and ‘Central Park,’” shared drummer Troy Kirkwood. “Broadway” and “Times Square Claire” take place on the same night. Written by Kirkwood, the melody of “Broadway” came to him in a dream paired with the concept of what it means to be a “big shot.” Instead of paying for a ticket to a Broadway show Jacey sneaks into the theater and discovers he has a lot in common with the lead. He leaves, deciding he will try to go about business the right way. “Central Park” wraps up the story and is more of a love song. There is no set year for “Central Park,” but it’s clear that a significant amount of time has passed, and something has caused Jacey and Claire to separate – the band agrees it may be ‘91 or ’92. “Central Park” is Jacey’s letter to Claire as if they were still together; however, it is only a moment of nostalgia. In the end, Jacey is alone.  Besides Heatstroke's collective talent, the band also credits Le Shed studio manager Brent Wohlberg for the success of their debut album. They have also recently gained notoriety in their hometown of Sudbury, Canada, having won local band competitions and receiving the invite to play at festivals in the surrounding area, including the Northern Lights Festival Boréal this past July. On October 20th, Heatstroke will drop the full album. In celebration, the band will grace the stage at The Lounge, a local Sudbury bar, delivering a full playthrough of their new body of work. Stay connected with Heatstroke on their website and across all platforms for new music, videos, appearances, and tour dates.

Episode 152 Hanna Telle Live Interview

Episode 152 Hanna Telle Live Interview

Waking Up To Tomorrow, the 3rd LP from Hannah Telle, finds her embracing a spiritual folk expression as she delivers her songs with an unprecedented dose of mysticism and introspection. She sings of her catharsis and the pain she encountered along the way. She takes time to admire the beauty of her surroundings. “I’m really interested in making music that is therapeutic,” she said. “I make music first and foremost for myself, because it helps me handle my emotions and deal with events in my life that I don’t really know how to handle, whether they be really good, or really bad, or sad or whatever they might be.”

The new album is the counterpoint to her previous project, Walking Away From The Dream. Both were produced by Riley Geare, a drummer known for his contributions to the music of Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Caroline Rose.

While she contemplated letting go on Walking Away From The Dream, the new album brings forth a bright return, acknowledging the power and weight of music in her life. The writing and development of Waking Up To Tomorrow, along with her recent return to Los Angeles, has manifested a creative reawakening for Hannah whose expression fills this album.

Hannah grew up in the theater. Born and raised in North Carolina, she graduated high school from the North Carolina School of the Arts with a concentration in drama. She voiced the main character for the BAFTA-award winning video game series “Life Is Strange” and has had roles in television and movies.

That, and the loss of people close to her, she said, has shaped her perspectives on life and on her writing.

Writing songs is her way of dealing with her own pain, a way of letting go of feelings and then moving on to new feelings and writing new songs.

“It’s something that I do to help myself deal, and I try to make the sounds as calming and helpful as possible to other people,” she said.

Coming from her foundations in the theater, she got into making music by chance, learning to play guitar for a film role in 2012. She began writing songs and playing them in small venues in and around Los Angeles.

“I didn’t record anything because I couldn’t play to a click track, and I was really intimidated about recording. I just liked to play live. It was something I was doing that felt good.”

She started hanging out with students from USC and the California Institute of the Arts at a jazz bar called 1642 in Echo Park.

“…I met all these kids, all these amazing musicians that went to CalArts and USC, and they started teaching me music and becoming my mentors. One of them, Ben Schwab, ended up producing my record after teaching me guitar and how to arrange songs.”

Together with Ben, she wrote and recorded her first LP, Hollow Glow, in 2016.

Hannah has a fourth album in process, which she plans to release next summer. She’s working with producer Michael Rault, the Daptone-signed artist and touring guitarist with W.I.T.C.H and Pearl Charles.

Hannah believes that the music like that of the ’60s and ’70s, “the golden era for me,” is coming back.

“It’s just really awesome to see how that classic rock sound has been remodeled and revamped with modern technology to become things like Tame Impala or Animal Collective, Altin Gun, or my personal favorite, Kikagaku Moyo. I want to work with more world-influenced sounds and really expand.”

Episode 151 Jimmy Mallia Live Interview

Episode 151 Jimmy Mallia Live Interview

Jimmy Mallia releases “Hey Hey”: a barroom style song about overcoming the demons of drinking

By Bobby Martin

Life can be a rollercoaster ride with peaks and valleys sending you in directions that can be completely unexpected. This has certainly been the case for Jimmy Mallia- a business man turned singer/songwriter from Texas has now released his first single about overcoming his biggest demon: drinking.

Mallia has released the tune “Hey Hey”, which can be heard on all major platforms starting on Oct. 25. Anyone who knows the struggle of alcoholism will take the song to heart and understand the innuendos thrown into his lyrics. But don’t expect to be sad and blue from listening to it.

This is a song that celebrates getting through the struggle and trouble associated with drinking, in the style of a barroom singalong that with a catchy chorus and fun, dancey rhythm.

“I could have done it kind of melancholy but I thought it would be much cooler to be a singalong song,” Mallia explained. “It’s very raucous. It’s very rowdy. It’s definitely like an old time kind of country song with a standup piano and a guitar.”

Mallia explained that he had been working on the song for a long time, and it evolved after spending time in a 12 step program. He said believe it or not, people going through a 12 step program do have a lot of fun. It isn’t just going to meetings and talking about how bad life sucks and what happened to them. It is more about getting through it together, and there is plenty of happiness involved.

“It’s really a lot of camaraderie and a lot of laughter, and I wanted to bring that out in this song,” Mallia said. “So at the end of the song there is a singalong for the chorus. I really wanted to get across that alcoholism is a serious issue, but you can have fun in sobriety.”

Mallia, 59, was born and raised in the small island town of Galveston, Texas and after going to college at the University of Texas and some time working in Houston, he moved to Lafayette, Louisiana. He had three daughters with his first wife, went through a tough divorce, but eventually ended up with full custody. He essentially raised his daughters by himself, and now has three grandsons.

“My life is like a Netflix story,” Mallia said. “There are so many episodes and side stories along the way.”

The song “Hey Hey” is about recovery from the excessive drinking that he had been plagued with for about 40 years. He said unlike some alcoholics, he was able to function and live a highly successful life. But it cost him his sanity at points, and now three years clean, he said life couldn’t be better.

Mallia has had plenty to contribute to his struggles, whether it be emotional aspects from failed relationships, handling family issues and whatever life threw at him. He explained that toxic relationships and being at home during the Covid-19 pandemic hit him especially hard, which caused him to hit the bottle hard as well. One day he said he couldn’t keep going on. He didn’t go to rehab, but the program is what saved him.

“Everyone’s rock bottom is different,” said Mallia. “I didn’t end up living on the streets or anything, but my sanity was totally gone. It was not a good picture.”

Mallia said if he hadn’t gotten sober he would never had taken the steps to release the song. When he was drunk he would have grandiose ideas but never follow through with them- something he said many alcoholics could probably relate to. When you sober up with a hangover, the idea isn’t so attractive.

One of the lines to “Hey Hey” is: “After drinking 40 years, lots of whisky, a lot of tears.”

This is a good summary of what his life was like, he said. Now he is ready to move forward, release his music, and live his best life.

Be sure to check out Jimmy Mallia’s new tune “Hey Hey” available for listening now.

Episode 150 Then and Now Live Interview

Episode 150 Then and Now Live Interview

What happens when you mix country and rock roots from a father/daughter duo with an age gap of more than 45 years, with sounds incorporating heavy guitar riffs, cello, flutes, keyboards and trumpets along with a steady bass and drum rhythm section? You’ll get Then & Now- a group from South Africa featuring Graham and Tori Ferreira, that is releasing an eclectic mix of music on their new album titled Aces, Angels & Devils. Graham, 77, and his daughter Tori, 31, both have dynamic backgrounds in the musical world. While their styles were drastically different, with Graham singing and writing country tunes and Tori deep into the punk and metal music world, the two share a common bond of being able to put together unique, creative music. Then & Now released the album Tales of Long Street in 2022, which is mostly country and rock, but includes accordion to give it a bit of a Mediterranean feel. The newest album, Aces, Angels & Devils is a whole new ballgame. The opening track sets the tone, with an extended psychedelic sounding guitar intro that leads into Tori and Graham trading off on vocals. One song on the album titled “Angel or a Devil?”, is a gritty tale complete with mesmerizing flute with a catchy chorus led by Graham. He sings, “When she comes to me at midnight, I don’t care what you say. Angel or a devil, love her anyway.” It includes a blistering guitar solo by Fraser, before Graham repeats the chorus, driving it home to the listener. While Then & Now has generally played their own tunes, they do have one cover on the new album - the fun Bobby Bare sung drinking song “Tequila Sheila” that was a hit in 1980. The track has a Tex Mex feel, with trumpets and all.

The album has touches of classic rock, alternative rock, psychedelia, swing music, a latin flavor and, of course, some country vibes. You can chill to it or dance to it, but one thing is for certain: it is unique. Tori calls their sound “unpredictable,” with Graham agreeing, adding that they are “different and creative.”

Graham explained that he started playing tunes in Cape Town in the 1960s, successfully at that, and that a lot of the music he writes goes right back to that time. Then Tori came along, and she has been playing music since she was a young child, with Graham saying he gave her a guitar at the age of three. About four years ago they decided to collaborate and put together a band to showcase the music written by Graham, who also goes by Papa G. “We were always Then & Now - kind of a name that Graham came up with as a nod to our age difference,” Tori explained. Graham said that he isn’t the typical 77-year-old, he has plenty left in the tank, saying that he envisions his farewell tour coming at the age of 105. Graham is a master of the rhythm guitar, plays harmonica and belts a deep country twang to his vocals. Tori, who plays rhythm guitar and ukulele, has a wide vocal range that lends to the new modern sound they have put together. Then & Now is described by Graham as “country fusion”, and it has sounds of country, rock, blues, reggae, Latin rock and progressive rock all rolled into one. The band’s lead guitarist is Marc Fraser, who the Ferreiras raved about due to his heavy metal riffs and wailing guitar solos. Fraser has been heavily involved in the writing of their new album having written most of the melodies for the songs and of course the guitar solos. Terrance Welch plays the drums, using an electronic percussion called the Octapad. Mark Marais is on the bass, driving the band’s tempos, and new to the band is Bronwen Milford, who is a classically trained flautist, pianist and cellist. She bringing a whole new element to their sound, as her background is in philharmonic orchestras. Then & Now isn’t just about them, they said, but could be a generational band with Graham envisioning the project going on for many years. “One of the big things about the concept of Then & Now is that we are busy building a brand.

Episode 149 Nikka Live Interview

Episode 149 Nikka Live Interview

NIKKA shows up with heavy duty talent and style with “Showed Up Drunk”

To introduce herself to music fans, and to tease an upcoming EP, NIKKA has chosen a bubbly, fun pop-punk song called “Showed Up Drunk.”

It’s a good choice, showcasing her lithe, lively voice, her musical talent and the storytelling that animates her songs. In the universe of the EP, Better Never, which drops October 13, the song is an episode in what she calls “a love story gone wrong.”

“Didn’t take my own advice,” she said. “I look over, and I see his lights were on, and I’m like, ‘Damn it! How dare he just sit there and live his life and ignore me.’”

That, “started the spiral in my head,” a spiral that sped up when two separate friends told stories of showing up drunk, one to confess her love to a friend, another to confront the boyfriend who broke up with her on her birthday.

That gave her the idea for the song and raised a question in her mind. “If I did show up to this person’s door drunk, what would I say?”

I showed up at your front door

Last night when I was drunk

And a little bit hopeful that you’d

Open the door without me knocking

And say that you’d been waiting for me

To come around

In NIKKA’s musical version, the story holds more gentle self-mockery than tragedy, heartbreak or bitterness.

Thinking about the question that came to her, the answer, she said, turned out to be, “I’m not mad, I’m sad. I want to know that I meant something to this person.”

The other five tracks of Better Never tell the rest of the story.

“The EP is a story of falling in love, and then experiencing that love falling apart, and the theme of it is the scars from your past relationships staying with you.” The other song she has released from the EP, “Would You Like to Dance,” is a soft, beautiful acoustic pop ballad that introduces the story.

She calls Better Never “genre diverse.” She describes the second song, “Like a Melody,” as R&B.

“It’s an interesting song, because depending on whether you’re in love, or if you’ve recently had your heart broken, you will interpret the song that way,” she said.

Song No. 3 is “Showed Up Drunk.”

So, we’ve had the two love songs and now she’s showing up at his house drunk, and we’re like, ‘What happened?’”

The fourth, “Only Ever You,” is a dance number, followed by a piano ballad called “Why’d You Have to Break Me.”

“And then we end with ‘Fatal Dance,’ which is alternative. But I’ve heard from some people that it has country influences.”

“I’ve always loved lots of different music. We could put on a country song, then throw on a death metal song and then we can go to house music. Regardless of the genre, we’re good. We’re having a good time.”

NIKKA, who calls herself an Eastern European refugee, came to America when she was 5. In her 20s, with just two songs out, she is just beginning a musical career, though she has always been a storyteller in music, stories and poems.

“Songwriting,” she said, “is my main storytelling.” During the pandemic, she found herself singing melodies to herself, over and over again. Eventually, she found herself thinking, “What is the story behind that? What is inspiring me to feel this way to the point where I just keep singing it?”

And, eventually, she decided to put her music out in the world at large instead of simply singing it to herself.

Episode 148 Kaycee B Live Interview

Episode 148 Kaycee B Live Interview

Kaycee B has been singing in her hometown scene for years and growing in confidence in her talents and abilities. Now she’s ready to burst out of her mountain cocoon onto the national music scene with an introspective and inspiring EP, “I Am Me,” that came out on all platforms on Sept. 29. “Prior to this, I was making music because it was what I love to do,” Kaycee said. “I would share it and I put it out there, but I wasn't really putting a whole story together, putting together a whole project. I would just release songs as I felt that they were ready and I would share them. “The title track to this album, ‘I Am Me,’ there’s a story in that. It's basically my transition. It is when I said I'm going to do this, I'm going to put this out, this is going to happen and I'm going to be confident. It’s a very self reflective album. So many of the songs express different versions of myself.”  Kaycee said one song, “Falling In Love” was released prior to the album hitting the streaming platforms and gave her audience a preview of the album. The other songs have been coming together for some time now.

“They’re all written by me,” Kaycee said. “Some of the songs I've been working on for a while and they were kind of on hold and some are a lot newer. The album has a broad style to it, it’s not just one style or one direction. Some of the songs are more emotional, some of them are more high energy. Some of the songs are supposed to be more of an uplifting feel. I want people to really be able to feel the emotion behind the music.”

Born and raised in the beautiful high plains of Billings, Montana, Kaycee B brings a new twist to a soul, R&B and pop vibe with a different feel. She sings with a very wide range of vocals and a lot of controlled movement.

Kaycee was eight years old when she started singing in her church and then her school. She performed in different venues around Billings in her teenage years, singing whenever she had a chance to get in front of a crowd.

“I began recording in a studio at 18 initially,” she said. “I had a few people that helped me get started recording. And I did not sound very good at first. I did in some ways sometimes, but I was really unfamiliar with recording on our studio mics, so that took me a little bit to get used to.”

She produced her first songs with a local producer, Jon Barnea, who eventually moved to Arizona. The songs on “I Am Me” are produced with Barnea and producers Micah Sanchez and J Reezy. One of her big breaks came when she got the chance to open for Lil Wayne in a concert in Billings.

“That was kind of my coming out show,” Kaycee said. “Everybody was giving me crap afterward, saying you haven't done any shows, how did you just go on a Lil Wayne show? I just did it. Initially I tried to sponsor the Lil Wayne show. They had said that they weren't having artists on it because he was bringing his own artists. We sent them a couple of songs. They ended up calling us back and saying that I could open. I was lucky and it was so scary because I'd already been turned down. So I wasn't prepared when they called back.”

Kaycee has also opened for artists such as 2 Chainz, Ashanti, Ja Rule, Too Short and others. She has projects currently with artists and producers such as Starlito, Allan Cubas, Dontae Wilmore, J Reezy, and more.

She said her confidence is growing and she wants to help others gain the confidence to do what they want to do in their lives.

“It's a confidence thing and it also makes other people feel confident because they say that's cool,” Kaycee said. “I'm glad she did that. I want to do what I want to do.”

Episode 147 Freemvson Live Interview

Episode 147 Freemvson Live Interview

Freemvson Drops Raw, Emotional Single, “Shmoke”

By: Nadia Sobehart

Self-made artist and producer, Freemvson, brings us his latest exploration of hip hop and R&B with his fresh single, “Shmoke.” Turning to life experiences for musical inspiration, Freemvson brings us a fresh sound that “breaks generational curses” and sets new bars.

The energetic single is a nod to recent circumstances in Freemvson’s life. “What inspired the song is a transition I’m going through in life,” shares the artist. “It came from a place of hate a little bit—hate and loss and retribution. I want people to hear it and feel aggressive—I want to give people energy.”

Raised in Dayton, Ohio, Freemvson grew up in a single-parent home and many of the struggles that came with it. “When I was 10 years old living in Alabama, my older sister helped me write my first rap,” shares the artist. “It was a spontaneous bond thing we did. Since then, I’ve been writing rap, songs, and poetry.”

The rapper’s raw emotion isn’t unfounded. “This is hip hop. I wasn’t fed from a silver spoon—I came from nothing. I came from the struggle. I don’t got to trauma dump or nothing, but people should know I came out of the mud. I formed everything on my own, no handouts or nothing. Everyone gets a little bit of help, but I’m investing in this all my own, out of my pocket.”

Freemvson’s creative process usually involves writing to a beat that inspires him. In the case of “Shmoke,” he worked to a beat by the same name and decided to go with it. “I wrote the song around the title and added my own elements to it. I speak on my own mindset and type of energy.”

Through his music, Freemvson is setting out on a mission to introduce listeners to a new genre of hip hop. “I want to redefine a new genre that people don’t know—trip hop. It’s kind of like psychedelic hip hop with R&B elements infused. It uses spaciness and psychedelic elements, very linear flows.”

In addition to his single, Freemvson has an album, Freemason, which placed #13 on Billboard’s “Heatseeker’s Chart” and #35 on Billboard’s “Hottest New Independent Albums.” Freemvson is also the founder of Luminosity Records LLC, which he founded in late 2020. “I’m an audio engineer and producer—I do everything, not just songwriting. So, I decided to form my own label. Right now, I’m investing in my own music.”

Episode 144 Kupid Live Interview

Kupid is stepping away from the expected with upcoming project Kill Kupid

By Jenna Gengler

A young artist who has always lived for the music, Kupid has been honing his creative skills since childhood. Whether he was studying guitar, teaching himself the drums, or following in the footsteps of his idols, he has always been working to make himself a better musician. This inspiration to be his best is easy to see in his upcoming project Kill Kupid.

Deriving a sound from his environment in Atlanta, the artists that brought that community to life, and his own experiences, Kupid creates music that is truly like no other. “I don’t think you can even compare me to other artists,” he said. “I have a really unique and personal style and I love experimenting with those sounds.” This is something you can see in all of his music, as Kupid constantly keeps his fans on their toes.

“If I could ask my audience to focus on anything when they listen, I would want them to take my music at face value.”

A project that is set to release right around the holiday season, Kill Kupid will take you through the personal highs and lows of how it feels to be a college student today. “It’s a collection of tracks more so than it's a cohesive album,” he explained. “It’s like little pieces of my year. A compilation of experiences and emotions that I’ve gone through this year.” The larger project is aptly named “Kill Kupid” because the emotions behind the experiences are raw, and Kupid feels there were times he was killing himself without justifiable cause. Despite this, there are also many references to pop culture that can be found in his music. Kupid is a fan of pop culture and feels music is about having fun as well!

To get his audience excited about the upcoming Kill Kupid project, Kupid is excited to release his single, “Okay Wait”. A sneak peak into what is to come later this year, the song is the first of a two part story. It is definitely a track that will leave you wanting more. “‘Okay Wait’ is really a feel good song,” Kupid said. “I think the fans are going to love how it can fit into any part of your life, whether you're hitting the gym, driving around town or doing just about anything else.”

To go alongside the release of “Okay Wait”, Kupid has collaborated with his cousin JLav and producer Spectrxm to create a more experimental EP. “It’s got a really good blend of our experimental sound with the kind of mainstream sound that is topping the charts right now,” Kupid explained. “It’s a really high energy project.”

As he continues to create music, release tracks and connect with fans, Kupid is excited for what is to come. “I’m just going to keep putting what I have out there and sharing it with my fans.” There is surely much more to come from this incredible musician and you are not going to want to miss out on any of it.

Episode 143 Pure Energy Live Interview

Pure Energy finds the time for its brand of dance R&B with “Midnight Magic”

“Midnight Magic” and Pure Energy, the R&B/funk/dance group that brought it to life and will release it September 8, have more in common than creator/creation.

“The idea for the song came to me when we were performing in clubs, and I noticed that things didn’t pop off, didn’t start happening, until after midnight,” said Lisa Stevens-Crowder, lead vocalist.

“That’s when everybody in the club was ready to party and get down. So, ‘Midnight Magic.’”

Lisa wrote the vocals and the melody. Curtis Hudson, lead guitarist and vocals, added the funk twist, brother Ray Hudson is the bass guitarist, and together they have put some magic in “Midnight Magic.” The song is a hot, hopping, purely fun dance track:

Pure Energy — Curtis, Lisa and Ray — are also looking for some magic at midnight. The song was written back in the early ’80s, when the group was hot but the music industry was often geared more toward snuffing fire instead of sparking it.

Lisa put it more bluntly. “They wanted to put us in a bag of just disco, and we’re R&B-funk. We are dance, but we weren’t disco.”

Curt wrote and produced “Body Work,” which became a hit for the group Hot Streak on its platinum soundtrack for the movie Breakin’. “Body Work” was also sampled by Missy Elliot for her 2005 worldwide hit “Lose Control,” which was nominated for Best Rap Song at the Grammys and won a Grammy for best short form music video.

Curtis also co-wrote the song “Remember Us” for John Legend, which earned Legend a Grammy for Best R&B Artist in 2021. With his and Lisa’s son, Eric Hudson, Curtis also co-wrote two songs on the Isley Brothers’ new album, Make Me Say It Again Girl. Curt and Eric teamed up to produce “Midnight Magic.”

Eric himself is a five-time Grammy winning producer who has written and produced for such artists as Whitney Houston, Kanye West, Mariah Carey, John Legend, Usher, and The Weekend.

Now, Lisa, Ray and Curtis are ending almost 40 years of temporary disbandment. They never stopped believing in Pure Energy. They never stopped performing, writing and collaborating.

“We didn’t totally disband, because we were writing songs and working together in the studio,” said Ray. “We were always doing that, all those years.”

“We intended on getting back together, but stuff started happening in other directions, so we just never did do it,” said Curtis, “until now.”

Over the years, they have accumulated a treasure trove of songs that were recorded in demo form but never produced. The music industry in its current form leaves a lot of room for independent artists, and they can put out their music, their way, with their sound.

“We’re going to re-record all of those songs,” said Curtis. “This, ‘Midnight Magic,’ is the first, but I guarantee you the best is yet to come.”

“I can’t wait until people hear more of our ballads,” said Lisa.

The fact that the songs were never produced is why they can put them out now under the Pure Energy name. They don’t own anything they produced for their original label. When “Midnight Magic” goes up, it will be their first song under their own name on modern music channels.

For a taste of their earlier material, their 1980 album Party On is under the Unidisc label on Spotify.

“We are proud of all the time we spent writing and creating songs, even though we didn’t get a chance to put them out,” said Ray. “We knew one day we would want to get back together and do something. We just didn’t know when.”

Turns out, the time is now. The clock is striking midnight, and the party is about to start.

Episode 142 Mack Holland Live Interview

Episode 142 Mack Holland Live Interview

Mack Holland releases new gospel track “Lord I Thank You” that pays tribute to what God has done for him

By Bobby Martin

Author and singer/songwriter Mack Holland has had a love of poetry and singing going straight back to his childhood. After recording his first song in 2013, and a book in 2017, he is continuing his musical journey with a new gospel song “Lord I Thank You” that comes out at the end of the month.

“Lord I Thank You” features himself on vocals along with a gospel singer named Bernard Williams, as well as background vocalist Ashley Herring. Holland called the tune a “smooth, and upbeat” track that people are going to love.

“This is a song I wrote that is basically thanking the Lord for all he’s done for me,” Holland said. “That’s basically what he talks about. When it comes on, I’m saying a prayer, thanking the Lord for all he’s done for me. And Mr. Williams starts to sing about all the things that God has done for us in our lives.”

Holland added, “I’ve let some people hear it, of course, and a lot of people are loving it.”

Holland was raised in South Carolina and moved to Augusta, Georgia in 1988. As a child he grew up in the church, singing in the choirs as well as in neighborhood groups and the school chorus. He was the lead singer of a group at the age of 13, but this was not on the radar about something he would really make into a career. At about 16 he started writing poetry and songs, with some in a catalog in the Library of Congress.

He wrote the song “I Ain’t Got No Money Honey” in 2011, which is when artist and repertoire representatives caught on and asked him to put music to it. He started working with Paramount Studios in Nashville in 2014, where this song and “Your Love is a Thrill” was recorded. Then in 2016, Holland wrote a gospel tune called “Are You Ready For Your Blessing.” This was the first song he recorded on his own, as Paramount was not involved in gospel music, and now at age 60 he is continuing his musical journey.

Holland has been working with Grammy Award winning producer Kevin Bond since 2016, and has recorded six songs to date. Some songs included “He Is,” “Love Me Now” and “Are You Ready.” These songs are all readily available on all platforms for listening.

Holland has written inspirational books, such as “Sweet Inspiration: The Mack Holland Book of Inspiration, Poetry and Song,” where the lyrics for a new song on the horizon called “My Favorite Girl” are included. He said he owes his experience as a writer to his work in music.

“I was a writer and just loved writing poetry, and that’s what I started doing,” Holland said. “And I was basically recommended to start playing music. That’s why I call it a blessing. One thing has led to another, and now I just enjoy doing it all the time.”

When Holland writes music he likes to inspire people. He said this is why he has songs of love, gospel inspirations and Christmas songs that transcend genres.

“I like to sit down and think about things that can inspire mankind, and make you feel good about yourself and feel good about others,” Holland said. “And keeping the Lord in mind. My music is inspirational music.”

Mack Holland’s brand new track, “Lord I Thank You,” as well as his other songs, can be found at all major music platforms.

Episode 141 Crazy 8 Live Interview

Episode 141 Crazy 8 Live Interview

New Jersey rapper, Crazy8 shows the world that passion and talent can exist behind bars. During his incarceration, the rapper has been working on fresh music to share with listeners all over.

His latest track, “Lost,” is a reflection of losing loved ones and facing the hardship that goes hand-in-hand with unfathomable loss. “The song came up one day during a time I had just lost my dad and then a sister,” explains the rapper. “It all came together into something. I was going through that and then it all built up and I kept saying the word ‘lost’ and turned it into a song.”

When it came to writing the song, Crazy8 struggled at first. “I was trying to come up with the beat, but it wasn’t clicking.” Through repetition and letting the song develop organically, the rapper was able to tune into the feeling and complete his rap.

Through word of mouth, Crazy8’s raps started to spread through the community. “I shared it with my brother and then others wanted to hear what I was writing. They started telling others about it and it spread.”

“I want lots of people to relate to it—especially those who lost people,” adds Crazy8. Creating music isn’t just his calling in life—it’s a way to give back and share commonalities with other people. He also believes in speaking his mind: “I never try to be someone I’m not.”

Music has been a long journey for the rapper. A fan of Lil Wayne and DMX, Crazy8 began rapping around age 6. He accompanied his uncle to the studio and played around with music whenever he could. Unfortunately, life took an unexpected turn.

Somewhere along the road, Crazy8 pushed aside his passion for music and caved to the street life. No stranger to incarceration—many in his circle had ended up there—Crazy8 wasn’t afraid of the consequences of his chosen path. His passion for rap resurfaced when he found himself incarcerated, wondering what his talents were at that point in life. It was then that he began writing again, creating notebook after notebook of raps across various genres. “I like to switch it up. Because different people relate to different things,” says the rapper.

Passionate about drill/love in particular, the rapper is open-minded to exploring his unique sound. One of his current projects is called K.F.C., which stands for “Kids Fighting Cancer.” The idea is inspired by the thought that life may be hard in prison or on the streets, but no one faces a harder time than a child going through cancer treatment.

With years ahead of him in prison life, Crazy8 looks forward to what he can achieve during and after his time locked up. “I can rap about anything I put my mind to,” shares Crazy8. In fact, the rapper is looking forward to sharing more songs this year. Alongside his producer, based in California, Crazy8 is working on more content to release in the near future. One project is his mix tape, “23 and 1,” coming out at the end of the month.

“I want people to tune in and understand my music and relate to it. If anyone would like to know anything, I’m an open book,” adds the artist. “Find me on social.”

Episode 139 Fareed El Boricua Arabe Live Interview

Episode 139 Fareed El Boricua Arabe Live Interview

International recording artist, Fareed El Boricua Arabe, presents his latest single for global audiences, “Una Noche Con Un Arabe.” The single is a reggaeton fusion with cultural undertones that speaks to Fareed’s multicultural upbringing and pure passion for music.

“Una Noche Con Un Arabe” translates to “One Night with an Arab.” “It’s a sexy song about a guy approaching a girl in a club,” tells the singer of the song’s meaning. “It’s a love story, a forbidden love. Not a lot of people understand Islamic/Arabic culture. I wanted to do something that would expose that culture. People are looking for escape in music. This is a simple love song in the post-pandemic world.”

As a multicultural artist, Fareed has always “been somewhere in the middle.” The American-born performer was raised in New York to a Moroccan father and Puerto Rican mother. “After years of doing different songs, this song came up. I almost didn’t record it, but my producer said I had to—it could go global. It’s a topic not a lot of people understand in the non-Arabian world.”

Blending genres to perfect his signature sound, Fareed El Boricua Arabe draws from hip hop, reggaeton, freestyle, bachata, and EDM to create his music. Generally a rapper, Fareed turned to his singing skills for this record. “My roots run deep in the hip-hop world and dance music,” shares the artist. “I also have love for the spoken word community. I’m trying to create something that represents me. I like to take genres and flip them in a way no one else does.”

An old-school artist who has undergone many transformations, Fareed boasts experience across decades and genres. “They say in the music industry it’s a young man’s game, but I’m here to prove them wrong,” he adds. “If you do good music and are passionate about what you do, the world will respond.”

From being in an 80s rap group to performing as a solo artist, Fareed is no stranger to reinvention. “We were all rappers back then, but at that time, hip-hop audiences didn’t understand that rappers aren’t just African American. We all ended up speeding up beats and creating Latin hip hop (called “freestyle” but not to be confused with freestyle rap). It was a whole generation I was a part of.”

A major life event—leaving the music industry to become a flight attendant—brought Fareed back to music. “I moved to the Dominican Republic, never knowing I’d get back into it. I met artists on flights who told me, ‘you’re multicultural—it’ll show in your music.’ So, I got back in as a hobby, doing bachata and live music I never thought I was capable of doing.” His first album featured the salsa song “El Boricua Arabe,” which inspired his moniker.

When reggaeton began gaining momentum, Fareed was encouraged by producer friends to try his hand at singing. “The future of pop music is fusing styles—not putting yourself in a box of genres. I pride myself on that, whether I sell records or not. I’m a misfit, always in the middle. Not Puerto Rican enough, not Arabic enough. And at 55, I’m still young in the Latin world.”

With an upcoming show in the Dominican Republic and a media tour on the horizon, Fareed is ready for what’s next. “At the end of the day, you have to believe in yourself. I don’t know why but I believe I was meant for greatness. I want to sell out arenas worldwide. I was born ready,” he adds. “It’s important to just follow your heart and not follow trends. That was advice I was given, and that’s what I’m doing.”

Episode 138 3AM Tokyo Live Interview

Episode 138 3AM Tokyo Live Interview

Top cover act 3AM Tokyo releases sexy single ‘Whoa Oh Oh’

By John Hacker

3AM Tokyo, a well known cover act in the northeastern U.S. is releasing a new original single that’s all about lust and the fun and sexy side of life.

The new single “Whoa Oh Oh” was released in mid-August and features the fresh new voice of Eliza Vitale paired with group founder Picasso Brown, Steve Leevy on keyboard, Eric Whatley on bass and Jerel Murray on drums.

“You really have to listen to the message because it’s inferred,” Picasso said. “It’s a very sexual song, it’s about lust. The premise is like whoa, oh my God. When Eliza is singing her part, she’s talking about how he makes her feel, like whoa. And when I sing my part, I'm saying like, how you use everything you're doing and it’s like whoa for me as well. It's fun and sexy.”

Picasso said 3AM Tokyo was called on recently to open for the rapper Flo Rida for a few dates on the east coast and they decided to come up with an original song to debut at that opening.

“This was actually Eliza’s idea,” Picasso said. “She was like, ‘we should come up with a song.’ I called her up to come to the studio and we knocked it out in four hours. Literally four hours, we wrote it and I produced and mixed it within two days.”

3AM Tokyo is the brainchild of Picasso, a Grammy nominated Singer/Songwriter/Producer, and it is one of the top regional and national cover acts with a powerful mix of pop, hip hop, EDM, reggae and rock.

“The sounds and dynamics of 3AM Tokyo are flawless, but we also have one of the top visual production shows on the scene, not only performing the songs, but giving fans a visual experience like no other,” Picasso said. “It's a visual show with lights and lasers and LED walls and all that stuff. And we have a complete mix of what we do throughout our show. So all these songs work within a three hour show that we do.”

Picasso said all the members of 3AM Tokyo have their own musical careers. Leevy on keyboard is a national touring musician who has performed with Wiz Khalifa, Snoop Dogg and others. Whatley is also a bass player for John Legend.

“I formed this group with different people that are that are prominent and in different areas,,” Picasso said. “We've been out for maybe ten years doing what we do. And it was just the four of us. Then I added Eliza to give us that kind of ‘Fergie’ feel, I guess you could call it. You know, Black Eyed Peas? She's my Fergie.”

The group has had some success on the Billboard Top 100 charts with their song “Can We Kick It,” and they continue to forge a unique identity and a truly unparalleled experience.
