Take It Personal (Ep 138: This One's For Barkley)

Take It Personal (Ep 138: This One's For Barkley)

On Episode 138, we're paying respects to our late friend and longtime supporter of Take It Personal, Matt "Barkley" Temchatin. Many of you knew Barkley as @HipHopAutographs, as he was one of the most celebrated hip-hop collectors online.

Barkley unexpectedly passed away a few months ago, so we wanted to honor him with our last episode of 2023.

Barkley, like myself, started out doing college radio but his love for hip-hop only grew as he got older. He went on to run a record store and work as a record promoter in Philly, later graduating to a family man. His true passion can be seen when you view his IG @HipHopAutographs or if you recall the time he amazed everyone with his appearance on D-Stroy's Show Off Your Gems.

Barkley was a huge advocate of new hip-hop, so on 138, we are playing some of our favorite records that have recently come out in honor of him.

We've got new music from Black Milk, Jay Royale, Elcamino, Torae, Beneficence, RJ Payne, Mickey Diamond & Big Ghost Ltd, Vinnie Paz, Little Brother, AZ, Supastition, Smoke DZA, Him Lo, Stu Bangas, The Good People, Edo. G, 38 Spesh, Open Mike Eagle, Blockhead, Paul Wall & Termanology, Lord Sko, Czarface, NapsNdreds and Keanutis Smith & Sense to name a few.

Thanks to all of you for holding us down in our 7th season of Take It Personal. We'll be back in mid-January with Episode 139, our Patreon exclusive. It's our way of saying thank you to all of our Patreon members who have supported us throughout the year and return with a special episode in late-January with some brothers we love.

From all of us at TIP, have a happy and heathy New Year. Enjoy the show.

This one's for your Barkley!

Take It Personal (Ep 126: CB4 Gusto)

Episode 126 is chock-full of treats, you'll need to check your insulin levels after listening to. We're talking demos, bootlegs, remixes, deep cuts and classics from 1992 all the way to 1996. Originally titled the Tiramisu episode to compliment 360's Chef's Special, we thought playing The Message, talking about It Was Written at the break and giveaway away some sick Get On Down vinyl, including Nas, made this title apropos.

At the break. we announce the ways to enter our TIP giveaway. We also share some wild opinions and what's an episode without some A-Aron hate? We get into his loathe for Life After Death and It Was Written. Dre joins the hate parade with his Puffy and Will Smith diatribe. Kevlar annihilates Jamie Lee Curtis and I confessed to liking Hell On Earth more than The Infamous. But we're giveaway a bunch of shit, so stick with us.

In addition to all the Get On Down vinyl records, we're also giving away Take It Personal custom baseball cards featuring Nas, Rakim, MF DOOM Redman & Black Thought courtesy of France's finest Zetaw Cards.

Remember to take advantage of our April savings in our store https://take-it-personal.creator-spring.com/

All month long enter promo code ARIES you'll save 30% off your entire purchase! If you have recently bought some TIP gear, be sure to tag on on Instagram and Facebook so we can shout you out on an upcoming show.

This episode is the definition of replay value. Enjoy!

Take It Personal (Ep 122: NYC Mix Show)

On Episode 122 we're going back to NYC circa 2000-2005, where mix show radio dominated the airwaves. Where clan's, posse's, crew's and clik's peaked with G-Unit, Dipset, D-Block, Terror Squad, Ruff Ryders, Murder Inc and The Roc. This was fresh-off the Nas and Jay-Z battle, when NYC was thriving again and when a kid named Justin Smith completely changed the game. Justin Smith aka Just Blaze went on to produce more hit records than any other hip-hop producer during this time. I can't stress this enough, but before there was Kanye West, there was Just Blaze.

There also was no bigger artist than 50 Cent. He wasn't just big in music, he was internally known with every major corporation for his undeniable charisma, street anthems and fashion. And speaking of fashion, remember the oversized white tees? How about Mitchell & Ness jerseys? You also had to have a fresh pair of Tims and white Air Force 1's. Who could forget those gaudy Canal Street watches we wanted to pass-off as Jacobs?

We may have lacked self-awareness in fashion but we definitely can acknowledge the incredible music to come out of this era. Whether you bumped Hot 97, Kiss or Power or downloaded joints off Napster, Limewire or Kazaa, you knew special this time was. We gotta thank to Nas, Jadakiss, Killa Cam, 50, Mobb Deep, Jay-Z, Ghostface, Fabulous, Black Rob, M.O.P., Ja, Styles P and Fat Joe for giving NYC back their sound.

This show is a homage NYC mix show and because we're always trying to find a balance like Atmosphere, our next episode we're giving you our college radio edition. Think of Non Phixion, D.I.T.C., Freddie Foxxx, Screwball, Wee Bee Foolish, El-P and J-Live. Think Fat Beats, A-1 and Turntable Lab. Think of the joints you copped off Sandboxautomatic and HipHopSite. Think of the message board era of Okayplayer, HipHopInfinity, UGHH and the best of all, the Philaflava forums. We are going to give you the ultimate yin and yang that NYC hip-hop had to offer during these great times.

Enjoy episode 122.

Take It Personal (Ep 119: J Dilla Tribute Pt. 1)

Episode 119 is our tribute to one of the greatest producers of all-time, J Dilla. Whether you knew him as Jon Doe, Jay Dee, J. Yancey, Dilla Dog or just Dilla, you knew him as the most influential producer hip-hop has seen in the last quarter century. J Dilla wasn't just a musical genius, he absolutely reinventing the way hip-hop was being created. His passion, imagination and the prowess displayed on each track is something we'll never be able to duplicate. To put it bluntly, J Dilla was simply ahead of his time.

On part 1, we're playing the essentials from The Pharcyde, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Common, The Roots, Janet Jackson, Q-Tip and of course Slum Village. We also focus on the solo career of Dilla as well as the collaborations with Madlib, Ghostface Killah, MF DOOM and Jay Electronic.

Whether we're talking about Pete Rock, Preemo, Q-Tip, RZA or even Madlib, you can immediately identify their signature sound. They hold a special place in our hearts, but J Dilla's place in different. His music hits different. We can't think of a better way to close-out 2022 than with this 2-part tribute in honor of James Dewitt Yancey.

Like Joni Mitchell says "You don't know what you've got til it's gone."

Take It Personal (Ep 103: Indie Hip-Hop Tribute Pt. 3) feat. Mr. Eon

Take It Personal (Ep 103: Indie Hip-Hop Tribute Pt. 3) feat. Mr. Eon

Episode 103 is the 3rd installment of our indie hip-hop tribute series. This time, we’re joined by Mr. Eon of The High & Mighty, who sits with the crew to discuss one of hip hop's greatest eras. We hear stories about how it started for them, the Masta Ace beef, working with Bobbito, The Alchemist, Rashida Jones, Beetlejuice, Kool Keith, Pharoahe Monch, Eminem and Cage. During the late 90s and early 00's, Eastern Conference Records was a staple in independent hip-hop. Who better to tell vivid tales of the indie hip-hop movement than one of the guys responsible for it?

We've got joints by Non Phixion, Saukrates, Natural Elements, Jigmastas, J-Live, Arsonists, Company Flow, Cage, All Natural, Rascalz, Cannibal Ox, J.U.I.C.E., Sir Menelik, Kool Keith, Ill Advised, Choclair, Mr. Lif, Mike Zoot and of course, The High & Mighty.

What made this era one of the greatest? The music was fresh, innovating, original, honest and most importantly fun. D-I-Y in full effect. Record stores in full effect. Online chat groups where you shared music was definitely in effect. That feeling of excitement while scarfing down a slice of pizza or Gray's Papaya because you couldn't wait to see what Fat Beats on 6th Ave had. When Fat Beats wasn't enough for your fix, you went to the LES to peep A-1 or took the iron horse to Fulton Street, to check out Beat Street and grab a treat from Juniors after. The days in New York during the indie hip-hop movement were magical.

Now, let's re-live those memories and magic this era gave us. Enjoy the show!

Take It Personal (Ep 101: Ode to 1990)

Take It Personal (Ep 101: Ode to 1990)

Episode 101 is an ode to 1990.

This was a defining moment in hip-hop as the musical tides started to turn. The 80s were done, as were many of the styles and genres to come out of that decade.

Rap dominated the airwaves and took over pop culture as we know it. While both MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice were at the top of the pop charts, it was influential voices like Chuck D, Ice Cube and Shock G that provided the sounds cherished to this day.

The Afrocentrism movement was huge as legendary groups such as X-Clan, Poor Righteous Teachers, Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, Brand Nubian and Public Enemy provided anthems throughout 1990. That same year, we had classics that were bound to wreck your body and say turn the party out…Treat ‘Em Right, Bonita Applebum, The Humpty Dance and Jingling Baby.

It wasn’t just music, the movies that came out in 1990 still hold a special place in our hearts. Watching House Party over and over. Laughing at Full Force saying everyone smells like pussies or when Chill couldn’t stop bumping the table while dragon-breath Bilal would try to mix.

Who doesn’t watch all of Goodfellas every time it’s on TV? Doesn’t everyone do the same yearly Christmas ritual and watch Home Alone?

Air Jordan V’s were on every kid’s feet. The Simpson’s were on every kid’s TV. Posters of Bo Jackson, Barry Sanders, Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky were on every kid’s bedroom wall. It wasn't just any year, it was one of the greatest. On episode 101, we pay homage to one of the most important years in hip-hop -- 1990!
