Wonka

Wonka

Disclaimer: At 33:00 we messed up our own ranking! We tried to place Wonka in our overall ranking of all of Hugh Grant's movies, but we inexplicably forgot to add our two scores together, which meant Wonka ended up placing 49/50 films! The movie would have finished 25th place if scored correctly.

Wonka (2023), directed by Paul King, tells the origin story of Willy Wonka, a character from the 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, featuring his early days as a chocolatier. Wonka is the third live-action movie based on Dahl's famous book, after Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005). With dreams of opening a shop in a city renowned for its chocolate, a young and poor Willy Wonka, discovers that the industry is run by a cartel of greedy chocolatiers. If that wasn't bad enough, he must also work out how to contend with his stalker, a small orange man played by Hugh Grant.

Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre

Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre

Better late than never folks!

Diggory and Oscar wholeheartedly apologise for their late review of Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, which was finally released on limited release in the US in March 2023 and on streaming platforms elsewhere in April 2023. It's come six months late, but what side of the coin will this latest Hugh Grant effort fall? Are we taking Hugh for granted or not?

Directed by Guy Ritchie, this film sees super spy Orson Fortune (Jason Statham) track down and stop the sale of a deadly new weapons technology wielded by billionaire arms broker Greg Simmonds (Hugh Grant). Reluctantly teamed with some of the world's best operatives (Aubrey Plaza, Cary Elwes, Bugzy Malone), Fortune and his crew recruit Hollywood's biggest movie star Danny Francesco (Josh Hartnett) to help them on their globe-trotting undercover mission to save the world.

Hugh Grant seen as an Oompa Loompa for the first time in new Wonka trailer

Hugh Grant is generating a buzz in the showbiz world again after a trailer was dropped this week for upcoming blockbuster Wonka. Grant will play the role of an Oompa Loompa in the film that is due to be released in December 2023, and was clad in full orange and purple make-up in a short exchange with lead Timothée Chalamet at the end of the trailer. Fans online were quick to pass judgement and at one point the news was the front page of BBC News.

Diggory and Oscar catch up for an emergency podcast to discuss the reaction to the first look at Hugh's latest character!

Hugh Grant on our screens at Christmas for the third year in a row; is cast in upcoming HBO series The Palace with Kate Winslet

After a hiatus of four months, Diggory and Oscar are back to spread Hugh Grant-related Christmas cheer! First up on the agenda is new film Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, which premiered in November but will be largely enjoyed on Netflix when it's released on December 23. Hugh has a very fleeting cameo in this 'whodunnit' starring Daniel Craig, but nonetheless it's got Hugh Grant fans talking!

The boys also debrief on an ABC News 20 years retrospective on Love Actually, where Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson and others reflect on making the Christmas classic. Can you believe Love Actually came out 20 years ago....! We can't.

Finally, Digs and Oscar ponder exciting news that Hugh has been cast in another HBO show, The Palace, following on from his success in The Undoing. This time, he's ticking off starring with yet another leading lady in Kate Winslet. There aren't a lot of details at present, but the fact it's being directed by Stephen Frears (who Hugh knows from A Very English Scandal and Florence Foster Jenkins) is certainly an early Christmas present.

Till We Meet Again

Till We Meet Again

Ah, the year is 1989 and the world hasn't yet realised the potential of two soon-to-be superstars of the late 20th century. We are of course referring to none other than Hugh Grant and the wonderful Courteney Cox, who star together in this two-episode television miniseries based on the 1988 Judith Krantz novel, Till We Meet Again.

In the full swing of the First World War in 1915, Eve (played by Lucy Gutteridge) meets Paul de Lancel (played by Michael York) while performing for the army and falls in love with him. Devastated by Paul working in the army and his continued absence, his wife Laure (played by Susannah Harker) kills herself. After this, her family swear revenge on Paul by keeping his and Laure’s son Bruno (played by Hugh Grant) and raising him to hate his father...

Red Nose Day Actually – The Christmas Special

Red Nose Day Actually – The Christmas Special

It's Chrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiisssssstttttttmmaasssssssssss and the boys slip into their Christmas jumpers for the podcast's annual Christmas special. This year we're doing things a little differently. We're sticking with the Love Actually theme (obviously), but we're looking back at Red Nose Day Actually (Richard Curtis, 2017), the 2017 15-minute sequel produced for charity. Most of our favourite characters return, including Hugh Grant as our sexy and noble prime minister, who's prefers throwing dirty dance moves around No.10 Downing Street rather than illegal parties.

Diggory and Oscar also have a go at a Love Actually quiz, and blimey is it difficult. See how they fare and you can play along yourself at home too, if you reckon your Love Actually knowledge is up to scratch! The quiz starts at the 15:00 mark.

Did You Hear About the Morgans?

Did You Hear About the Morgans?

Well did you?

Today, Oscar and Diggory review the very last of Hugh’s modern pieces – Did You Hear About the Morgans? (Marc Lawrence, 2009). The third of four rom-coms that Hugh works on with director Lawrence, once again Hugh plays a slightly detestable, but loveable Brit living in New York.

Meryl Morgan (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) and Paul Morgan (played by Hugh Grant) have separated since his infidelity. After witnessing a murder, the Morgans are relocated to a tiny ranch town in Wyoming as part of a Witness Protection Scheme and told to remain until the killer is caught. Whilst there, Meryl and Paul must sort out their relationship whilst trying to evade the murderer who is hot on their tail…

Privileged

Privileged

Take a trip down memory lane with Oscar and Diggory as they take a look back to where it all began - Hugh Grant's first ever film, Privileged (Michael Hoffman, 1982).

Hughie Grant (as he's credited in the film) begins his acting career playing the role of Lord Adrian - a posh, entitled Oxford student with a slain deer slung over one arm, a girlfriend who doesn't love him on the other and his soon-to-be iconic floppy hair flowing lusciously behind him. For Hugh Grant fans, this is a must watch!

Notable for being the first theatrical release from the Oxford Film Foundation, Privileged was a film shot by Oxford University students, starring Oxford University students and about Oxford University students.

Edward Blake (played by Robert Wooley) is one of a group of Oxford undergraduates taking part in a student production of "The Duchess of Malfi". During rehearsals of the play, Edward strikes up a romance with fellow actor Anne (played by Diana Katis) and, later, Lucy (played by Victoria Studd). Whilst Edward tries to keep his relationship with one a secret from the other, he must also make sure his dalliance with Lucy is kept from her boyfriend, Lord Adrian (played by Hughie Grant)...

An Awfully Big Adventure

An Awfully Big Adventure

This week the boys travel to Neverland to review An Awfully Big Adventure (Mike Newell, 1995), or as they’ve officially renamed it – 'An Awfully Shite Adventure'. That being said, this film is definitely worth sticking in your VHS player because acting legend Alan Rickman stars alongside our man Hugh Grant.

In 1947, a naive teenage girl named Stella (played by Georgina Cates) joins a shabby theatre troupe in Liverpool. The troupe, led by the mean-spirited and flamboyant Meredith Potter (played by Hugh Grant) put on a production of Peter Pan. After P.L. O’Hara (played by Alan Rickman) joins the cast as Captain Hook, Stella quickly becomes entangled in the theatre’s web of sexual politics and intrigue...

Extreme Measures

Come one, come all and listen to the latest episode of Taking Hugh for Granted as Oscar and Diggory take a look at Extreme Measures (Michael Apted, 1996) and ask the all important questions: 'If you could cure cancer by killing just one person, would you?' and 'Is this film taking Hugh for granted?'

When a man’s body mysteriously disappears from his emergency room, doctor Guy Luthan (played by Hugh Grant) begins making enquiries. The trail leads Luthan to the door of the eminent surgeon Dr Lawrence Myrick (played by Gene Hackman), but Luthan soon finds himself in danger from people who want the hospital's secret to remain undiscovered...

About a Boy (with Drunk On Rom-Coms)

This week Oscar and Diggory are joined by two very special guests – Marie and Coni from hit podcast Drunk On Rom-Coms. The girls certainly lived up to their name by drinking the boys under the table, despite recording at 10am.

In a chat that covered everything from the definition of a 'bloke' to Diggory's trips to Disneyland, we discussed one of Hugh Grant's all time classics: About a Boy. The DORC gals were particularly taken by Nicholas Hoult's destruction of a duck in St. James's Park and his jig to Mystikal's Shake Ya Ass. But did Marie and Coni think About a Boy was taking Hugh for granted? Tune in to find out.

Our Sons

Come fly the flag with us this 2021 Pride month as we look back on Our Sons (TV Movie, 1991), one of a select and special few Hugh Grant projects in which he plays a LGBTQ+ character. Your hosts, Oscar and Diggory, discuss the movie's (many) mishaps, pitfalls and mistakes but also how, despite all that, it's rather inspirational...

Donald Barnes (Zeljko Ivanek) is dying of A.I.D.S. His lover, James (Hugh Grant), pleads his mother, Audrey (Dame Julie Andrews), to go to Fayetteville, Arkansas to convince Donald's mother, Luanne (Ann-Margret), to end her estrangement from Donald and see him one last time...

We did it! Hugh Grant's 'I'm Still Here' actor credit is removed from IMDb

I'm Still Here

I'm Still Here

This week we comb through 2010 mockumentary I’m Still Here (Casey Affleck, 2010), which follows Joaquin Phoenix’s Hollywood ‘breakdown’ and attempt to start a tone-deaf rap career.

Now I know what you’re all thinking – this isn’t a Hugh Grant film. We thought so too, until we discovered that it appears on Hugh Grant’s IMDb page as an official acting credit – forcing us to review the film.

The problem is this: Mr. Grant does NOT feature in the film at all. In fact, the only reference to him throughout the movie is a picture that only serves the purpose of mocking Mr. Grant. We believe this misleads viewers, who sought out this film to see Mr. Grant's bumbling charm or flowing locks.

Moreover, on IMDb's website, other prominent figures like Barack Obama, Alec Baldwin and John Travolta who supposedly 'appear' in I’m Still Here in the same non-acting capacity as Mr. Grant are listed as ‘uncredited’, and are presented with the caveat of appearing only in ‘archive footage’ used in the film. Why, we therefore ask, is Mr. Grant not afforded the same treatment?

Considering all this, we’ve decided to do the only thing left in our power: PROTEST! And we need your help!

We’re asking you, The Hugh Grant faithful, to press pause on Hugh’s rom-coms on Netflix, sharpen your swords to Stage Combat Level 4 and bring out your hammers a la The Undoing to demand the following changes from IMDb:

1. IMDb amend Mr. Grant’s listing on their website with connection to I’m Still Here to bring it in line with the credits of other stars.

2. IMDb list Mr. Grant as ‘uncredited’ and as part of ‘archive footage’ – not as an ‘actor’.

3. On Mr. Grant's personal IMDb page, relegate I’m Still Here from his ‘Actor’ credits, to his ‘Self’ credits.

Colin Firth Things First: Bridget Jones's Baby

Colin Firth Things First: Bridget Jones's Baby

We’re hugely excited to announce that we’re officially rebranding! Oscar Beardmore-Gray and Diggory Waite are proud to introduce to you Colin Firth Things First – a new podcast dedicated to reviewing every single Colin Firth film ever made!  We can’t wait to get started and look forward to discussing Colin’s broad shoulders and soothing tones in stellar performances from The King’s Speech to Mamma Mia.

Today is our first episode and we kick things off by watching the third film in the Bridget Jones franchise: Bridget Jones's Baby (Sharon Maguire, 2016). The boys discuss the good things in the movie (Bridget's wonderfully played nightmare boss), the bad things in the movie (Ed Sheeran's cameo) but before both of those, of course, we talk about the Colin Firth things first. Come join us as we discuss the career of Britain’s most talented and inspirational actor of his generation!

Forty-something and single again, Bridget Jones (played by Renée Zellweger) is awoken by her mother who reminds her that her time to have children is running out. After Bridget attends the funeral of Daniel Cleaver (pictured as Hugh Grant), she reconnects with her former lover, Mark Darcy (played by Colin Firth) and soon after that, spends a similar night of passion with charming, American billionaire Jack Qwant (played by Patrick Dempsey). Weeks later, after a positive pregnancy test, one little bump is causing one big problem: Who is the father? The old flame or the new fling?

Make sure you're following Colin Firth Things First on Instagram and Facebook as well as Twitter. You can get in touch with us there or via our email takinghughforgranted@gmail.com. (*We'll be changing this email address soon to reflect our rebranding*)
