Modern Managers

Welcome to Season 2 of the podcast. In this season, I wanted to share my learning experience and reflections from the 2021 Modern Workplace Learning Practitioner Programme - created by Jane Hart, who is the Founder of the Centre for Learning & Performance Technologies  – one of the world’s leading websites on learning trends, technologies, and tools.

Today’s episode marks the start of a new block of modules on the programme, centred around Supporting Continuous Learning from the Work, and the role that both Managers and Workers themselves play in Learning from the Daily Work.

There are 4 modules within the Learning from the Daily Work component of the programme, comprising of:

  1. The modern manager.
  2. The modern worker.
  3. Reflective practices
  4. And lastly Knowledge sharing.

Today’s episode is about the Modern Manager.

If your employees aren't learning, you're not leading.  There's a strong positive relationship between how much people learn on the job, and how much they love their job.

Modern managers play a key role in building a successful continuous learning environment, and in this unit Jane explores topics such as understanding motivation at work, how to foster flexibility, growth mindset, how to be more of a coach than a boss.

99. What story are you telling yourself?

99. What story are you telling yourself?

In today's mini-episode, I want to share my reflections on my own career identity, how I might need to rewrite my own narrative to embrace change.

This episode was inspired by the book "Adaptation Advantage: Let Go, Learn Fast and Thrive in the Future of work" written by Heather McGowan and Chris Shipley.

Selected one of the top 30 Business books for 2021 and the most downloaded book in December 2020.

As described by Soundview Book Summary, “The Adaptation Advantage explains the profound changes happening in the world of work and posits the solution: new ways to think about careers that detach our sense of pride and personal identity from our job title and connect it to our sense of purpose.” McGowan believes this is the key to unlocking human potential through creating self-propelled lifelong learners.

92. Performance Reviews: Communicating value delivered to go further faster - feat. Warren James

Do you find it challenging to communicate the value that you delivered when it comes to performance review time or when negotiating your salary?
In today’s episode, I invited Warren James - former engineer and project manager, turned coach and mentor will share his tips on how to prepare for performance conversations, how to articulate the value you bring to an organisation when negotiating your salary, and the compounding effect salary negotiations can have over time.
Warren wrote Further Faster – The Ultimate Guide To Accelerating Your Career for young professionals to encourage them to work smarter, not harder. He is passionate about showing them how, with a little effort and forethought, they can achieve more than they ever dreamed possible.
Warren’s own career success in engineering and project management saw him ascend the corporate ladder and put himself in a position where retirement was an option at age 35. A career highlight was delivering $50+M worth of work under budget, ahead of schedule, without any recordable injuries while managing a team in excess of 150 people.
As a project manager, Warren discovered that he thoroughly enjoyed helping people reach their full potential. He also experienced the burnout that can come from the stress, long hours and immense pressure, needing four months off work to recharge at one point in his career.
Now, as a leader, mentor and director of Rapid Mentoring, what sets Warren apart is his unique approach that balances life skills and resilience, coupled with a focus on performance and career acceleration.

85. 3 steps to discover your talent stack

85. 3 steps to discover your talent stack

Originally coined by Scott Adams (creator of the Dilbert comic), the idea of a "talent stack" is that you can combine ordinary skills until you have enough of the right kind to be extraordinary. It’s the idea that you can stand out from the crowd in how you create value by having a unique stack of skills that no one else has. You’re probably wondering... is my talent stack just a list of skills stacked up together? How do I summarise my diverse experiences in a concise way that communicates value? I wanted to expand on Scott Adams's definition of a talent stack, to help you: Describe how you add value with your talent stack Identify what further learning you might like to consider to diversify your skillset & make an impact on the future you envision. There’s one thing you probably haven't considered in your work from home setup - and that is audio quality. In today’s episode, I’m going to share why I think you should invest in a good microphone and recommend 4 different types depending on how you run your meetings. Poor audio quality can affect your audience's ability to process what you’re saying.  Investing in crystal clear audio isn’t just a matter of convenience — it’s essential for building connection, credibility and establishing your personal brand. 74. Digital Skills: Where Do I Start?

Today’s episode is inspired by one of our listeners all the way from Ankara in Turkey, and she shared this question as part of the Listening Tour we did in May. "Digital skills - I know they’re important to have, but where do I start?" If you look up digital skills on Google, you’ll find various lists out there ranging from top 10 skills to some other websites that encourage learning as many as 60 digital trends.   Instead of feeling like you need to cross every single skill on these lists.. we should start with asking ourselves: How can we create better outcomes for people and society by considering a digital approach to solving problems? Which of the digital trends are you most curious about to learn that will achieve this outcome? In todays episode I’m going to share 3 quick examples: Digital upskilling to pivot / grow your career Digital upskilling to augment your client experience & gain a competitive advantage for your business Become familiar with how digital trends are shaping our world The most important thing is to learn at your own pace, in a way that suits your style. and practice applying what you’ve learned. It may feel overwhelming at first, but the more you ask  “wouldn’t it be amazing if"  instead of looking at what’s been done before, the more you'll enjoy learning it your way and at your own pace. 73. Building leadership experience in the new normal - feat. Julia van Graas & Steph Clarke

How can I build leadership experience in the new normal?
In this episode, Julia van Graas and Steph Clarke from Spiique share how you can start by leading yourself, curating your leadership learning playlist, and become more courageous in realising your leadership potential - especially so in the new normal.
Julia gets leadership teams collaborating and delivering results in challenging situations. Globally experienced, Julia is a sought-after advisor whose people-centred approach is heavily influenced by her experiences of achieving improbable results in turnaround and crisis situations. Trained as a Chartered Accountant, she subsequently studied psychology, is a qualified Organisational Coach, and a Certified Dare to LeadTM Facilitator.
Steph helps teams be better teams. As an accountant-turned-facilitator, she realised that changes don’t happen through spreadsheets, but they can happen through post-it notes. She loves the creativity of designing new experiences for teams to have the conversations they need to, build trust, tame the elephants in the room, and come out stronger.
Topics covered:

What it means to lead yourself

Building your own leadership learning playlist

How to overcome self-doubt in your leadership potential
