Tips to Living a “Normal” Life with Chronic Dizziness

Tips to Living a “Normal” Life with Chronic Dizziness

This week, Dr. Abbie Ross, PT, NCS, and Dr. Danielle Tolman, PT sit down with Allison Hirshey to discuss her tips for living with chronic dizziness.

Sound, Vibration, and the Vestibular System with Ian Curthoys

Sound, Vibration, and the Vestibular System with Ian Curthoys

This interview was a treat! Dr. Danielle Tolman, PT and Dr. Abbie Ross, PT, NCS are joined by our listener favorite Jeff Walter, PT, DPT, NCS to talk to Ian Curthoys, Professor Emeritus. This discussion covers different ways sound and vibration can stimulate the vestibular system, and how it can be used for diagnostic purposes at bedside.

If Ian Curthoys' name sounds familiar... it's because it should! In 1988 Halmagyi and Curthoys introduced a subjective test of semicircular canal function—the head impulse test (HIT)! Read his original article here: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamaneurology/article-abstract/587833

Clinical Pearls for Decision Making When Your Patient's Positional Nystagmus Has You Going... WTF?!

Clinical Pearls for Decision Making When Your Patient's Positional Nystagmus Has You Going... WTF?!

This is a new and special episode of Talk Dizzy To Me that we couldn't be more excited to share!

Jeff Walter, PT, DPT, NCS is back to talk with Danielle Tolman, PT, DPT and Abbie Ross, PT, DPT, NCS about an awesome (and challenging) infrared video goggle video submitted by Dan Streeter, PT, DPT, COMT.

This episode breaks down this one video, isolated just to this point in time. All of you vestibuloholics out there may be itching to hear about the whole case... but we're keeping it simple. Instead we take this video step by step to discuss the possibilities of what may be happening physiologically, and then discuss our clinical decision making for determining next steps. Our hope is that this episode helps to give clinicians different perspectives, as well as more confidence with tackling challenging cases.

To say that this episode is loaded with Clinical Pearls would be an understatement! If you liked this episode, please be sure to let us know! We'll be sure to include more like this in the future if you feel that this type of content is valuable to you.

Email Abbie@BalancingActRehab.com if you have a cool or challenging goggle video you'd like to share. You may just get your own episode!

Binocular Vision Dysfunction with Dr. Debby Feinberg and Dr. Mark Rosner

In this episode, Dr. Danielle Tolman, PT and Dr. Abbie Ross, PT, NCS are joined by Dr. Debby and Dr. Mark to discuss visual dysfunction and the impact it can have on vestibular patients.

Dr. Debby Feinberg is an optometrist, and Dr. Mark Rosner is an Emergency Physician. They are Co-Founders and Co-Directors of the NeuroVisual Medicine Institute in Michigan, which trains other optometrists to become NeuroVisual Specialists.

Dr. Feinberg has been performing pioneering work with Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD), which is a condition where a vision misalignment creates difficulties with the two eyes working together to create a single 3-dimensional image, as well as difficulties with the two eyes following that image as it moves.

Dr. Mark Rosner is the Director of Education and Research at the NeuroVisual Medicine Institute. He has been actively involved in developing the specialty of NeuroVisual Medicine and in Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD) research since 2005. He has led the effort to validate the Binocular Vision Dysfunction Questionnaire, which is used to identify patients who most likely have BVD that will benefit from treatment.

Special projects such as the Life Rebalanced Chronicles, as well as VeDA's recent monthly live interviews, would not be at all possible without the help from volunteers and donations to help our efforts support and empower vestibular patients on their journey back to balance. Please consider visiting www.Vestibular.org today to find more information on ways you can help this great non-profit. https://vestibular.org/article/get-involved/

Otolith Labs introduces The Otoband

Otolith Labs introduces The Otoband

Vestibular Specialists Dr. Danielle Tolman, PT and Dr. Abbie Ross, PT, NCS are joined by Sam Owen and Dr. Didier Depireux, Ph.D to talk about their company Otolith Labs and the device that they have been developing for years to help mitigate dizziness and motion sickness: The OtoBand.

"Otolith’s patented non-invasive head-worn technology uses precisely tuned vibrations to interact with the motion sensors in the inner ear, mitigating the symptoms of vertigo and motion sickness. This novel technology has been validated by several clinical studies, including multiple independent studies at universities and with leading automotive manufacturers." Otolith Labs was recently granted De Novo approval by the FDA which provides a pathway to classify novel medical devices for which general controls alone provide reasonable assurance of safety and effectiveness for the intended use, but for which there is no legally marketed predicate device.

You can learn more about Otolith Labs and the Otoband on their website: https://otolithlabs.com/

If you'd like to see if you qualify for their upcoming studies go to: https://otolithlabs.com/studies/vertigotelehealth/

Dr. Shin Beh, MD and all things Vestibular Migraine

Dr. Shin Beh, MD and all things Vestibular Migraine

Dr. Shin Beh, MD , is one of few U.S. neurologists who specializes in evaluating and nonsurgically treating vestibular disorders – including vertigo, dizziness, and problems with balance – and visual disorders arising from brain abnormalities. As the founding Director of UT Southwestern Medical Center’s Vestibular Neurology and Neuro-Visual Disorders Clinic, Dr. Beh sees many people who have nearly lost hope of having their problems correctly diagnosed and treated.

Here on Talk Dizzy To Me, we sing Dr. Beh's praises, alongside with one of our favorite guests, Alicia Wolf (the Dizzy Cook). On this episode Abbie and Dani dive a little deeper with some generalized treatment and diagnosis questions, as well as some more clinician based topics. From VNGs and goggle testing, to treatment devices, Dr. Beh has the 411.
