Date: Saturday, January 27, 2024 Time: 4:00 pm - 9:30 pm Location: The Foundations, Williwa Street Portland

Lithgow Council's Facebook Event Page: Forged by Fire Festival

About Jacquelene's Artwork Installation:

The episode will provide a sneak peek into two new videos that promise a visual feast for the audience.

One of the new videos features footage from the movie Firestarter (1984), capturing an electro-encephalogram monitored display of pyrokinetic firepower in a silvery-grey warehouse building similar to the festival's venue. The other video adapts an online montage of supernatural firepowers in cinema, enhanced with transparent layered still images of fire god-esse-s.

Jacquelene's diverse artistic expressions also include a video performance of deep listening sound with broken musical instruments, a photoprint and soft sculpture installation made from aluminum fire hazard suits, and engaging workshops on weaving with telecommunications wire.

The Forged by Fire Festival: Igniting Creativity in Lithgow

The Forged by Fire Festival, organized by Lithgow Council, is set to explore the intricate relationship people share with fire. Against the backdrop of El Niño and the height of summer, the event aims to provide a space for the community to express their fears, share strategies, and celebrate the incredible ways to work with fire through performances, art activities, food stalls, and more.

This captivating episode of Talking ArtZ will not only showcase Jacquelene's breathtaking artworks but also shed light on the festival's broader purpose and the inspiring stories behind the event.

Talking ArtZ 15 | The Professor talks with Manu from Farm It Forward and Sharon from Gang Gang GalleryI

Talking ArtZ 15 | The Professor talks with Manu from Farm It Forward and Sharon from Gang Gang GalleryI

Talking ArtZ 15 | The Professor talks with Blue Mountains  artist & socially conscious entrepreneur, Manu from Farm it forward,  a Blue Mountain not-for-profit urban farming social ART enterprise.

Brad talked on the RBM’s Talking ArtZ program to Emmanuela Prigioni from social enterprise, Farm it Forward, which has become one of our strategic partners in our growing greating ecology. We met Manu at GBMCAN's strategic planning day, when she came along as a guest of our Treasurer and keen permaculture trainer, Melissa Chambers. Manu has a masters degree in visual art and she is strongly committed to socially engaged art.

The Professor: So what is Farm It Forward Manu?

Manu:  Farm It Forward is a not-for-profit social enterprise that tackles issues of social isolation and food security in the Greater Glue Mountains. We grow food in market gardens that are on people's donated unused private land, to help residents of the Blue Mountains who are at risk of social isolation and food insecurity.

There are four young people who are employed to look after these plots, of which we have 8 in total. We're based mostly around the Mid Mountains, Hazelbrook and Lawson, but we also have 2 plots in Katoomba. The Blue Mountains Food Co-op is sponsoring us to grow food for them, another is right in the middle of Katoomba between the Cultural Centre and the Carrington Hotel.

On the Farm It Forward website their mission is described as
“We grow nutrient dense regenerative food for our local community whilst raising awareness on growing practises and the mental health benefits of growing a food garden. Social outreach is a big part of what we do. We empower people to create local food systems creating resilience and nurturing our physical and mental health into the future.”

The Professor: Now are you linking culture and art based activities with all the aspects of the positive things that we can do to improve things like mental health and social isolation?

Manu: This year we're working on a project that will also include an art exhibition of materials and what we've made throughout our different projects. Something quite unique about our social Enterprise is that we managed to survive through the drought, the bushfires, the floods and the pandemic. That's largely due to the fact that we've reached so many people and they're the ones that I've been able to carry is through with this program.

The Professor: How does your work fit in with GBMCAN’s regenesis project?

Manu: I regularly do some visual artwork. I am a printmaker and I like to use my own pigments that I extract from my garden wood. I really enjoy doing a lot of printmaking using woodblock, linocuts and other illustration work. It's never in isolation. it's always to help with the work that we do and see in our food security work. So it's something that I've started teaching. I like not so much teaching, but sharing my skills with our volunteers and our team. The kind of artwork that I do never fits into the usual art gallery. I like to democratise art. I'm Italian and I come from a place where there is a very strong culture of appreciating art in the everyday, not in some specialise art gallery. I feel that's really important, and it fits in with the way Aboriginal people here have treated art making in their own culture.

Talking ArtZ 14 | The Professor talks with Blue Mountains crime fiction author Michael Duffy in this Talking ArtZ Podcast Special

The Professor talks with Blue Mountains crime fiction author Michael Duffy.

Michael is the author of a number of crime novels, including Drive By, and true crime books. The most recent one is The Strange death of Paul Ruel, second in his current series.

Michael Duffy’s second offering in what is now being called the Bella Greaves Series, is a worthy sequel to the original. Its story is equally as compelling, as are its characters, including the backdrop of the Upper Blue Mountains, itself. The Strange Death of Paul Ruel achieves a similar atmosphere as The Problem with Murder, with the rugged Mountains landscape and its unpredictable weather a key feature in the story.

As the novel begins, Paul Ruel remains an outsider to the culture of the Blue Mountains Police force after only seven months in his new position. There has been a social event for a sick colleague but Paul is not invited. He doesn’t fit in and his past fame is merely a source of jealousy. Having enjoyed semi-celebrity as a homicide detective in Sydney, Paul had been transferred to Katoomba Police station after a media gaff gave his superiors a reason to banish him.

So when a body is found at the base of Govett’s Leap, a 180 metre tall pencil thin waterfall disgorging into the Grose Valley out of Blackheath, Paul’s thorough investigation of the circumstances of the death is seen as a symptom of his desire to recapture his past relevance and purpose. When he subsequently rescues a young drug-affected woman, Hannah, from the top of the cliff, YouTube videos of the event raise the status of the case and once again give Paul some notoriety.

The Strange Death of Paul Ruel, like The Problem with Murder, is only available from Blue Mountains bookstores. However, it can be purchased online from orphanrock.com. Follow this link to check it out. please listen to the podcast. purchase and read the books, and spread the word to help this local author and publisher. Michael is supported by6 GBMCAN and Radio Blue Mountains.

Talking ArtZ 12 | The Professor talks to Elizabeth Gadsby who is a Marketing Co-Ordinator for the Lyttleton Stores

The Professor talks to Elizabeth Gadsby who is a Marketing Co-Ordinator for the Lyttleton Stores in Lawson who discusses upcoming exhibitions, dinners and workshops being held at the co-operative shops down on the northern side of the railway line at Lawson.

From their website.

"Lyttleton Stores Co-operative is a not-for-profit community enterprise in Lawson in the Blue Mountains. We are a collective of people, combining our loves of organic home grown food and artisan made craft ware. Our mission is to connect customers, makers, and growers, encouraging conscious, ethical, local economies as well as transitioning to a no-waste, lower energy future.

Although we started out as a family partnership in 2015, the intention was to become a cooperative as our community grew. The transition to a co-operative occurred during 2018 through initiatives such as our crowd funding campaign, workshops, open gardens, exhibitions and pop up dinners. We have established connections with local teachers, makers, growers, gardeners, artists and customers who have become our community.

We believe that a sustainable future involves a secure food system, creativity and adaptability, health and wellbeing, as well as a thriving localised economy.

On this episode of BMCAN's Talking ArtZ writer Craig Billingham and visual artist Judith Martinez Estrada talk to Wendy Chai and Brad Diedrich about their work practises and how they are dealing with the COVID-19 lockdown while producing new works.

Mountains, NSW. Martinez graduated from the UNSW Art and Design with a Bachelor of Design in
1996, and is currently completing a Master of Philosophy in Fine Arts at the same institution. Judith is a collector and visual narrator. In her work she explores theories about memory and the use of images and objects found in archives (official and personal). She borrows fragments from the past to create a new present. It displaces people from old images and creates an alternative world around them, exploring the themes of identity, emigration, nostalgia and reinvention.
