Tangle takes spring break.

Tangle takes spring break.

As we head into the Easter and Passover season, with Ramadan already here, and with many colleges and organizations observing spring break in various ways, we're giving the team a few days off. We'll be back in your inbox on Tuesday, April 2nd.

In the meantime, we also know some of you re receiving Tangle for the first time today while others are new, or may want some content to consume while we're gone. To that end, we've pulled together some of our best stuff from the newsletter, YouTube channel, and podcast from the last few weeks. We also went back into the archive and resurfaced a few old articles for your perusal.

The violence in Haiti.

The violence in Haiti.

Violence and unrest in Haiti. Over the past week, more than 230 U.S. citizens have been evacuated from Haiti as a gang-led rebellion continues to surge through the Caribbean nation. In a briefing last Monday, March 18, U.S. State Department Spokesperson Vedant Patel called the situation “one of the most dire humanitarian situations in the world,” saying that "gang violence continues to make the security situation in Haiti untenable, and it is a region that demands our attention.” On Sunday, 30 U.S. citizens were evacuated from Haiti to Miami aboard a charter flight. Over 1,600 Americans have filled out crisis intake forms at the U.S. Embassy in Haiti.

The terrorist attack in Russia.

The terrorist attack in Russia.

The terrorist attack in Russia. On Friday night, four gunmen stormed Crocus City Hall, a concert venue outside Moscow, killing over 130 people and wounding over 100, according to Russia's top security agency. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, posting videos from cell phone footage one of the shooters took during the violence. U.S. officials said the Islamic State-Khorasan, the group known as ISIS-K (based in Afghanistan), carried out the attack. U.S. officials had also warned Russia on March 7 that they were “monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts.”

INTERVIEW: Isaac talks with Andy Slavitt

INTERVIEW: Isaac talks with Andy Slavitt

Few people have had a closer look at the inner workings of our government than Andy Slavitt.

In 2013, Slavitt oversaw the turnaround of healthcare.gov after its disastrous rollout. He then worked as Acting Administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) under President Barack Obama, which meant he was overseeing the Children's Health Insurance Program and the Health Insurance Marketplace, as well.

In January of 2021, he was brought into the Biden administration as a Senior Pandemic Advisor to the Covid-19 pandemic response team — a role he stepped down from in June of 2021.

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard Business School, Slavitt is now the founder and Board Chair Emeritus of United States Care, a national nonprofit health advocacy organization, and the founding partner of Town Hall Ventures, a health care firm focused on underrepresented communities.

Perhaps most notably, Slavitt was one of the central figures of the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, which will be 15 years old next year. I wanted to talk to Slavitt about that anniversary, the state of health care in the U.S., his experience during the pandemic, and whether we are prepared for the next one.

Should we have a 32-hour workweek?

Should we have a 32-hour workweek?

The 32-hour workweek. Last Wednesday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) introduced a bill to federally mandate a 32-hour workweek. Sanders’s bill is the Senate companion to a bill introduced by Rep. Mark Takano (D-CA) in the House, the Thirty-Two Hour Workweek Act, which would amend the Fair Labor Standards Act to reduce the standard workweek from 40 hours to 32, lowering the maximum hours threshold for overtime pay for non-exempt employees. Those exempt would include computer professionals, farmworkers, sales employees, and many other occupations. The proposal follows the United Auto Workers (UAW) strikes in the fall, where one of the labor demands was for a 32-hour workweek.

Missouri, a dispute between the administration and two Republican-led states (as well as five social media users) over how the federal government can combat misinformation on topics like Covid-19 or election fraud.

Chuck Schumer's rebuke of Netanyahu.

Sen. Chuck Schumer and Benjamin Netanyahu. On Thursday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called on Israel to hold new elections and described Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as an obstacle to peace in the Middle East. Schumer, the first Jewish Senate majority leader, a longtime supporter of Israel and the highest-ranking Jewish official in the U.S., broke from a longstanding precedent for elected officials and heavily criticized Netanyahu in a 40-minute Senate speech.

Good news and bad news, everyone: Our New York City event sold out over the weekend! That's good news for us and for everyone who bought their tickets early, and bad news for everyone else who wanted to go. But we talked to the venue and were able to release some more tickets to make sure we got as many members of the Tangle community in the door as possible. So, more good news: There are a couple dozen more seats available. They're going to go fast, so get your tickets now!

While we're on the topic, I'm thrilled to announce two of our guests for the event. We'll be joined on stage by Katrina vanden Heuvel, the longtime editorial director at the progressive magazine The Nation, and Josh Hammer, the biting conservative columnist who is now a senior editor-at-large at Newsweek.

The Supreme Court reinstates Trump on Colorado's ballot.

Trump on the ballot. On Monday, the Supreme Court ruled in a unanimous decision that states cannot disqualify former President Donald Trump from the ballot for his role in January 6, 2021. The ruling overturns a Colorado Supreme Court decision disqualifying Trump and applies to every state in the country. However, the justices were divided on the question of who can enforce Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. This ruling is unrelated to their decision to take up the question of whether Trump is immune from criminal prosecution, which we covered yesterday.

SCOTUS will hear Trump's immunity case.

Trump's immunity case. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court agreed to decide whether former President Donald Trump can be tried on criminal charges that he conspired to overturn the 2020 election. The case is related to charges brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith that are being heard in a Washington, D.C. federal court. Before the federal appeals court hears the case, the justices released a one-page unsigned order pausing all proceedings and asking the lower court to hold its ruling rejecting Trump's immunity claim.

Engoron's decision concludes the civil fraud suit against Trump for misrepresenting his wealth for financial gain while leading the Trump Organization. Trump is expected to appeal, which could take more than a year and would delay any enforcement of the penalty.

New York's 3rd Congressional district. On Tuesday, former Democratic congressman Tom Suozzi won a closely watched special election in New York's 3rd Congressional District. The election to replace former Rep. George Santos (R) was between Suozzi and Mazi Pilip, a registered Democrat and political newcomer who served as a Republican in Nassau County's Legislature and made the southern border and immigration a centerpiece of her campaign. The campaigns and outside political groups spent more than $20 million vying for a win.

INTERVIEW: Bill O'Reilly

INTERVIEW: Bill O'Reilly

Before Tucker Carlson, the most consequential news anchor in America was Bill O'Reilly. Under his leadership, Fox News became the most popular television station in America. In 2009, The O'Reilly Factor was the number one cable news show in America for 106 consecutive weeks, sometimes drawing more than three million viewers a night. His views on national politics regularly dominated the front pages, and his style was fought and often mocked by the left, but rarely ignored. Yet O'Reilly was also fundamentally different than what Tucker Carlson became. He did not and does not consider himself a conservative or even an ideologue. He's maintained friendly relationships with liberal contemporaries like Jon Stewart. In 2020, after Donald Trump's election was lost, he was one of the few news anchors regularly watched by Trump supporters who was telling them that the election was not stolen. Today, O'Reilly runs an independent nightly broadcast, much like the one he ran on Fox News, called No Spin News. He was ousted from Fox News in 2017 after a New York Times article revealed that he and the network had settled multiple sexual harassment allegations in court, costing millions of dollars. Advertisers fled when the story broke and Fox News eventually let O 'Reilly go. In previous interviews, he said that he regrets not fighting the accusations. While his ouster from Fox News may have taken him out of the limelight for many liberals and progressives in America, he's still a force in the more conservative minded media ecosystem. No Spin News is still widely watched and even appears on some cable news channels. After O'Reilly interviewed me on his show a couple months ago, hundreds of his viewers signed up for Tangle. In September, when Tucker Carlson interviewed O'Reilly on X, their conversation drew over 22 million views. After appearing on O'Reilly's show a few times in his repeated references to being a Tangle reader, we decided to turn the tables. I reached out to his team to have him come on the Tangle podcast. I had a lot of questions for him. I wanted to ask about the 2024 race, the state of the media, his relationship with Donald Trump and Tucker Carlson and Jon Stewart, his ouster from Fox News, and I tried to get him to say something nice about President Biden. It took some arm twisting, but he eventually did. He has deemed President Biden the second worst president in US history, and we talked about that too. Shortly before the interview, O'Reilly's people emailed us and said he could only do 20 minutes instead of our scheduled 45 minute interview. So we didn't get to some of the things I wanted to get to, but once the conversation started, he actually did hang around for over 30 minutes, close to 40. So today we're going to bring you that conversation exclusively right here on the Tangle YouTube channel. Hope you guys enjoy it. And don't forget, let me know what you think. You can reach me at Isaac@readtangle.com.

* FACT CHECK: There were some moments in the interview we felt needed to be clarified. One editor's note was included in this podcast, but there were a few others. You can check out the full transcript of the interview with notes here.

Michigan mom convicted in mass shooting case.

Michigan mom convicted in mass shooting case.

Jennifer Crumbley. On Tuesday, a Michigan jury convicted Crumbley, a school shooter's mother, on four counts of involuntary manslaughter for her son’s killing of four high-school students in 2021. Crumbley is the first parent in the U.S. to ever be found criminally responsible for their child carrying out a mass killing. Her husband, James Crumbley, is scheduled to stand trial next month.

Editor's note: Tangle does not name mass shooters because of the well documented contagion effect. For similar reasons, where possible, we also try to share limited information about the shooter and their alleged motives.

Appeals court says Trump is not immune.

Trump's immunity. On Tuesday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit unanimously rejected former President Donald Trump's claim that he is immune to criminal charges of trying to undermine the 2020 election. The panel, composed of two Democratic appointees and one Republican appointee, said that presidential privileges don’t shield Trump from prosecution for federal crimes that apply to every American citizen.

The latest economic news. In the fourth quarter of 2023, the U.S. economy grew much more rapidly than expected while inflation continued to slow. The Commerce Department said the U.S. has avoided the recession many forecasters thought was inevitable, and in 2023 the economy grew faster than any other advanced economy in the world.

The border standoff in Texas.

The border standoff in Texas.

The Texas border standoff. On Friday, the Supreme Court ruled that the federal government has the authority to access a park abutting the Rio Grande and remove razor wire installed by the state of Texas. The Department of Homeland Security told Texas to give it access to the fencing, which is in Eagle Pass, by Friday, but Texas has refused. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton demanded proof that the federal government has authority over the border, while Gov. Greg Abbott (R) doubled down, saying he'll increase state border patrol and add more barriers and razor wire.

The Sunday podcast: Isaac and Ari talk Bolivia, big layoffs and bold grievances.

On this week’s podcast, Isaac Saul (Founder) and Ari Weitzman (Managing Editor) talk about Isaac’s recent adventure in Bolivia and how he can’t park a motorcycle, some breaking news regarding a former Fox News host coming to the Tangle podcast and the New Hampshire Primary and how Nikki Haley could win, but probably won’t. They also discuss the recent layoffs at legacy media companies and last, but not least, the Airing of Grievances (the one where Ari looks like the a**hole.)

The Israel-Hamas hostage negotiations.

The Israel-Hamas hostage negotiations. This week, Israel and Hamas have been exchanging offers in their negotiations to enter a ceasefire and release the remaining hostages being held by Hamas. On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected an offer from Hamas to release its remaining 130 hostages in exchange for a permanent end to the war and a total withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza that would leave Hamas in power.
