Esports: It is a "Space Race," and is not the "Wild West"
While not a perfect analogy, when you strip away the geopolitical feud between the USSR and the USA, the potential infinite possibilities of space creates an interesting mindset. In American pop culture, the space race morphs into Star Trek where society had to come together for a greater purpose. With esports, we see that need, now more than ever. We see there is not one way to create an esports experience. #RiotAct2020: An Open Letter to Riot Games
With this week’s news of Riot’s “North America Community Competition Guidelines,” educators are stepping forward and locking arms in defense of the new and evolving ecosystem of esports in high schools and the children who inhabit it. In order to correct this action, we ask of Riot Games the following: 1. Revision of the North America Community Competition Guidelines (Last Updated: March 9, 2020) by removing Item 9, and working through the RSAA to create new separate Item 9 guidelines for college and high school groups. 2. Representation on the Riot Scholastic Association of America (RSAA) Board of Advisors via a diverse group of high school esports leaders (there are currently zero seats allocated). 3. Creation of pathways for high school esports associations to gain sanctioning to conduct events using Riot Games intellectual property, games and the terms: Varsity, Season, Championship, Post-Season, League, or Playoffs. 4. A pledge to never receive equity or direct funding from another for-profit association or company arranging, operating or hosting high school esports events. Should there be any previous, or future, equity or funding received from any such companies, it should either be returned, or set aside for grants to high schools working to create, or sustain, esports programs. The high school esports community will not stand idly by, or feel bullied or pushed due to special interests. The high school esports community sets the scholar gamer experience first, shall boldly dare to dream of a great esports experience for our children, will thrive together through mutual respect and care of each other, will collaborate and execute with excellence a meaningful experience for and with our children, and we will stay hungry and humble learning and growing together with, or without, Riot Games. -- #RiotAct2020: An Open Letter to Riot Games Sign the Letter Riot Games North America Community Competition Guidelines -- Esports is organized competitive video games allowing schools to redefine their athletic culture, diversify opportunities for student participation, promote physical and mental health, increase collegiate scholarship pathways, and play games!  We cannot forget the importance of play! Updates and Reflections
This week on The Academy of Esports, I reflect on the work we have done to bring esports to the city of Racine. We have a fantastic partnership with the local gaming lounge, Not Your Parents' Basement. We have a grant to fund three of our high school teams at NYPB. We have a grant that funded our first team at The Walden School. We are part of a fast growing state association full of dedicated educators with a passion for gaming. We have a gift from the Racine Public Library Foundation to purchase 12 gaming laptops for use in the library. We have one student already on scholarship at Robert Morris University in Chicago, and a new D1 program at Marquette University in Milwaukee. The Tough Questions
In the twentieth episode of The Academy of Esports podcast, there was a question sent in asking "how does one make the cast for esports in schools when people pushback?" Pushback is inevitable when you present people with change. It is important to remember esports is the vehicle to amazing opportunities for students to engage in ways they have not previously in school. The host, James O'Hagan, shares advice on how to present the idea of change based on 20 years experience in bringing change at various levels in education. -- Esports is organized competitive video games allowing schools to redefine their athletic culture, diversify opportunities for student participation, promote physical and mental health, increase collegiate scholarship pathways, and play games!  We cannot forget the importance of play! When School Culture & Gaming Culture Collide
The seventeenth episode of the podcast looks at when school culture and gaming culture do not mesh well. Riot Games, this week, announced sweeping changes to their company culture to address sexism and misogyny. Do schools have a responsibility, when considering what games to include in their esports programs, to examine the publisher's practices? What if the popular game company's public values do not align with school and conference values? Note: I did not address what would be the potential fallout should other gaming companies be found to have similar issues as Riot Games. However, Riot Games has the opportunity to address their own toxic culture, and next steps can be discussed in later episodes should this problem uncover problems at other companies whose games are used in high school esports leagues. -- Complete Show Notes -- Esports is organized competitive video games allowing schools to redefine their athletic culture, diversify opportunities for student participation, promote physical and mental health, increase collegiate scholarship pathways, and play games!  We cannot forget the importance of play!
