Peek-A-Boo and ICU

Peek-A-Boo and ICU

Where do patients with Peek-A-Boo virus go?

To the ICU.

In all seriousness, the ICU is a fragile, high dependency unit that requires specialised staff and equipment to ensure the safety and care of it's patients. Patient's are cared for by a collaborative model of care, and various specialities of medicine and allied health care for each and every patient in the unit. We talk to Dr. Hannah in this pod episode, who takes us for a dive into the ICU.

Physics Is Fun!

Physics Is Fun!

There is much more to physics than E=MC squared. Why is physics so heavily embedded in the Medical Radiation Course? What role does it play in our profession and degree. Can you get away with rote learning physics for your exam and then experience physics amnesia? We talk to a Medical Imaging Physicist to find out more.

Through the Patient Lens

Through the Patient Lens

Sometimes we hear a patient’s story, but did we really listen? We all lead busy lives, and busy departments, but a value of what I am sure many of you can relate to, that I believe is the most fundamental attribute within healthcare is humanity. As clinicians we put the care into healthcare, and patient centered care is of utmost importance as we see people in their most vulnerable state. Caring for our patients goes beyond being professional button pushers and encompasses a wide range of interpersonal skills.

Minutes mean myocardium and a blockage to any of the coronary vessels is a medical emergency. When a patient’s life is in the balance, who is the one waiting to open up that vessel again to re-perfuse the heart muscle? and what does that even mean?

Today we talk to David, a Cardiology Advanced trainee within the NSW Public Health Sector who gives us some insight from 000 to the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory. Tune in to find out just how the coronary arteries are assessed and re-opened.

Under the Knife

Under the Knife

The operating theatre is an integral department of any hospital where surgeries take place under aseptic or ‘clean’ environments.

We joke that as medical imaging professionals that we can see right through you, but really, we can, and we offer vision to guide the surgeons that are putting the patients under the knife.

Why on Earth would we find ourselves in an Operating Theatre, and how would we be of assistance you may think? Tune in to find out!

Body Bag Parade

We deal with patients in their most vulnerable state. We see the world differently to everyone else. We learn to communicate effectively and to interact professionally with our patients at all times. We utilise a myriad of paralinguistic cues as well as verbal and non verbal communication techniques however, what happens when your patient's don't answer your questions, or cannot give you a clinical history?  What is it like to image the deceased all day long?

Medical imaging is commonly used in the collection of forensic evidence around deceased people. Medical imaging autopsies are increasingly being used to determine the cause of death of patients. The deceased are bought into the medical imaging suite in a 'body bag'; sometimes it needs to be opened, sometimes it does not. In this episode we talk to a Radiographer who has worked clinically and then transitioned into the like of forensic medical imaging.

Wading through a Global Pandemic

Wading through a Global Pandemic

Let's take a glimpse into working within and creating a safe environment for our colleagues, our patients and their families.  Imaging is essential in the initial diagnosis and monitoring of many disease processes. In January 2020, the World Health Organisation declared the novel coronavirus met the criteria for a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. With imaging at the forefront of diagnosis, measure of severity and monitoring of disease, radiographers are healthcare professionals who are exposed to the front line.

During this episode, we talk to Orla, a trained MRI specialist, who talks to us from her flat in London as the UK heads into round two of lockdown during a global pandemic.
