Episode 151: Financial Wellness - Insurance Check-in

Episode 151: Financial Wellness - Insurance Check-in

In this episode we are talking about doing an Insurance Check-in as part of your Financial Wellness planning. Be sure to listen to this episode to learn how insurance plays an integral part in achieving the goal of Financial Wellness.

Financial wellness requires a comprehensive approach, and a periodic review of your insurance policies should play a key part in your approach. Safeguarding personal assets and protecting business interests, as well as planning for the future, insurance serves as the bedrock of financial security.

A thorough review of personal insurance policies encompassing life, home, auto, and umbrella coverage. Assessing coverage limits, deductibles, and premiums ensures adequate protection against unforeseen events, whether it be accidents, natural disasters, or liability claims.

Insurance is a pivotal part of mitigating risks and safeguarding assets for business owners. A review of business liability, auto, and life insurance policies is essential to ensure comprehensive coverage against potential liabilities, property damage, and loss of key personnel.

Moreover, disability insurance stands as a crucial safeguard for personal income protection. By providing financial support in the event of illness or injury that prevents one from working, disability insurance offers peace of mind and ensures continuity of income during challenging times.

As for retirement planning, insurance can also play a strategic role. Annuities and other insurance-based retirement products offer a reliable stream of income during retirement, complementing other savings vehicles such as 401(k) plans, IRAs, mutual funds, and stocks.

Finally, estate planning is incomplete without a thorough examination of insurance policies. Life insurance can provide liquidity to cover estate taxes and other expenses, ensuring a smooth transition of assets to heirs and beneficiaries.

Therefore, periodic insurance reviews is a crucial component of achieving financial wellness. By evaluating and optimizing insurance coverage across personal and business assets, individuals can fortify their financial security and create the foundation for a prosperous future.

Episode 150: Triumphing After Failure

Episode 150: Triumphing After Failure

In this episode we are talking about Triumphing After Failure. Listen to this episodes to help you bounce back from failure and achieve success again. Setbacks and failures are inevitable, and, by some entrepreneurs, they are often considered rites of passage by entrepreneurs. It is not the stumble that defines their journey, but the courage to rise and bounce back. For business owners navigating the tumultuous seas of commerce, triumphing after failure requires a trifecta of resilience, resourcefulness, and relentless determination.

Mindset—the foundation which triumph is built on. Embracing failure not as a defeat, but as a vessel for growth, entrepreneurs cultivate a mindset of resilience. Setbacks can be used as steppingstones and learning opportunities that move you closer to your goals.

Equally essential is the personal and professional network that surrounds you. In difficult times a robust support system is a much-needed lifeline. It offers guidance, mentorship, and a shoulder to lean on. This group can be made up of industry peers, mentors, or friends and family. By tapping into this network, you can receive invaluable insights and encouragement during moments of adversity.

Many people who triumph after failure have created a system to help them bounce back quickly. The system helps foster adaptability within their business operations, enabling swift course correction in the face of challenges. A system can include:

1) Taking time to engage in self-care.

2) Evaluating your failure.

3) Making a list of what went right, what went wrong and the details of why.

4) Reviewing past wins and remembering what you did to achieve that success previously.

5) Connecting with your supportive network.

6) Then create a plan for your next endeavor.

7) Then consistently take action, moving forward one small step at a time.

In the end, triumphing after failure is not just about weathering the storm; it's about emerging stronger, wiser, and more determined than before. A setback can become the fuel for your future success. So, continue to dare to dream, and refuse to yield in the face of adversity, because triumph awaits you on the other side of a temporary failure.

Episode 146: Your Business Plan Made Simple

Episode 146: Your Business Plan Made Simple

As National Business Plan Month unfolds, entrepreneurs are confronted with a crucial choice: which blueprint best suits their needs? Whether embarking on a startup venture or fine-tuning an existing enterprise, selecting the right business plan can be the key to success.

Enter the trio of options: the one-page business plan, the mini business plan, and the traditional business plan. Each offers a distinct approach tailored to varying needs and timelines.

The one-page business plan, championed by advocates for swift action, is a beacon for those eager to hit the ground running. It distills the essentials into a concise roadmap, ideal for entrepreneurs seeking rapid deployment and results.

Meanwhile, the mini business plan strikes a balance between brevity and strategic depth. Offering a simplified yet comprehensive overview, it provides entrepreneurs with a strategic compass to navigate the complexities of the marketplace.

For those charting a more traditional course, the traditional business plan remains a stalwart companion. From securing funding to mapping out every step from inception to fruition, it serves as a comprehensive guide for the journey from point A to point Z.

Regardless of the chosen format, certain elements remain indispensable in crafting a robust business plan. An executive summary sets the stage, succinctly articulating the who, what, and why behind the venture. Market analysis delves into the intricacies of the target audience and competitive landscape, while financial projections offer a glimpse into future viability.

A solid business description and structure, coupled with a well-defined marketing and sales strategy, round out the essentials. And in the spirit of preparedness, a contingency plan stands ready to address unforeseen challenges.

In the end, whether opting for brevity or depth, the key lies in crafting a plan that addresses the fundamental questions of what, when, where, who, and how much. With the right roadmap in hand, entrepreneurs can navigate the twists and turns of the business landscape with confidence and clarity.

Episode 145: The Season of Charitable Giving

Episode 145: The Season of Charitable Giving

This is the “Season of Giving” and we are talking about leaving a legacy and making a lasting positive impact through charitable giving.  Three powerful and strategic tools in the world of charitable giving are Charitable Gift Annuities, Charitable Remainder Trusts, and Charitable Giving through Life Insurance.

Charitable Gift Annuities offer a unique blend of philanthropy and financial planning. By making a charitable gift, individuals receive fixed payments at regular intervals, ensuring a steady income stream during their lifetime. This approach not only supports causes close to your heart but also provides a tangible financial benefit, making it an attractive option for those seeking to align their charitable goals with personal financial security.

Charitable Remainder Trusts provide a flexible means of giving. These irrevocable trusts allow you to receive income for life, or a set period of time, after which the remaining assets go to the designated charity. This strategy facilitates philanthropy and can also offer potential tax advantages, as well as asset protection. It's a dynamic tool that allows individuals to support charitable causes while preserving financial interests.

Charitable Giving through Life Insurance allows you to use the value of your life insurance policy to create a meaningful legacy. By naming a charitable organization as the beneficiary, you can make a substantial contribution without impacting your current financial situation. This approach allows for a profound impact on a charitable cause while harnessing the benefits of life insurance as a philanthropic tool.

These three strategies represent a synergy between financial planning and charitable giving. They empower individuals to support the causes they are passionate about while incorporating strategic elements that may enhance their overall financial well-being. As always, consulting with your team of advisors is critical in navigating the complexities of these charitable giving strategies, ensuring that the impact is both meaningful and sustainable. By unlocking the potential of Charitable Gift Annuities, Charitable Remainder Trusts, and Charitable Giving through Life Insurance, you can leave a legacy that echoes your values for generations to come.

Succeeding With What You Have

Succeeding With What You Have

In this episode we talk about how a small business owner or aspiring entrepreneur can succeed in business using what they have. Be sure to listen to this episode to get tips and inspiration to help you succeed in business with a small budget.

Succeeding in business with what you have is not a new concept for many, in fact it is how most businesses were started. The enthusiastic aspiring business owner uses their savings or gets money, in the form of a loan or investment, from their family members and friends to start their business. With a high level of enthusiasm, strong self-belief, creativity, and sheer determination they find a way to make their business a success.

Starting a business with limited capital fosters resilience in an entrepreneur. This is because an entrepreneur must learn to be resourceful and prioritize where and how they invest their limited funds, making sure they get the most bang for their buck. This is a catalyst for their creativity which helps them with overcoming setbacks and challenges experienced in business. As the saying goes “Necessity is the mother of invention”

Aspiring business owners on a shoestring budget should know the following things can help you succeed in business:

1)     Take time to think about your skills, gifts, and talents that they have and can use to start their business.

2)     Starting a business they are passionate or enthusiastic about, that utilizes their current skills, gifts and talents.

3)     Take consistent action by doing at least one (1) thing every day to move them forward in their business so they can achieve the success they desire.

It would also do aspiring business owners well to remember that it is not about what they do not have but what they actually do with what they have, that will make their business successful.

Episode 142: Estate Planning and the Entrepreneur

Episode 142: Estate Planning and the Entrepreneur

This is National Entrepreneurship Month and most times we focus on personal development or ways to improve business, but today we're going to focus on why Estate Planning is just as important for an Entrepreneur. Listen to this episode to learn the basics of Estate Planning and some key tips.

During the hustle and bustle of entrepreneurship, many entrepreneurs overlook the importance of Estate Planning. Entrepreneurs primarily focus their time and energy on making their business a success. However, spending time on Estate Planning could be considered a financial and legacy building strategy.

When planning for the future success of a business, the owner should also plan for their own future, and their family members' future success as well. Investing time in Estate Planning can help ensure a person has an enjoyable quality of life should the entrepreneur become unable to care for themselves due to an unforeseen debilitating injury or illness. Taking the time to select the right person to handle business, financial and health decisions before something happens can make a big difference in the quality of care a person receives, as well as their overall quality of life when they are unable to care for themselves.

Advance planning will also help an entrepreneur to provide for and preserve their estate for the loved ones they leave behind. Without proper planning, everything an entrepreneur worked hard for, can be severely dwindled down by federal taxes, state taxes and the estate administrative costs.

At a minimum an entrepreneur should create a will. It can help keep the peace between loved ones. Because, unfortunately, during times of grief loved ones sometimes argue, and even declare all out war, over treasured items and assets of the deceased loved one.

For reasons mentioned previously, we recommend entrepreneurs decide on how they want their assets and treasured items distributed, then assemble a team of advisors (attorney, accountant, insurance professional and financial advisor) to ensure their wishes are honored.

Episode 140: Long-Term Care Insurance & The Small Business Owner

Episode 140: Long-Term Care Insurance & The Small Business Owner

This is Long-Term Care Insurance Awareness Month, and we're talking about why it's vital to small business owners and entrepreneurs. Listen to this episode to hear why it's important to include Long-Term Care in your financial plan.

Small business owners are the backbone of our economy. We as small business owners wear many hats, and the majority of us manage our business' finances, but often we don't include planning for our long-term care.

Many of us do not think about the risk of losing income because of a chronic illness or disability as an entrepreneur. However loss of income is the very reason, as small business owners that actively work in their business on a day-to-day basis, long-term care planning should be an essential part of our financial planning. Because when an entrepreneur is unable to work, it affects the profitability of their business as well as their personal finances. This is where Long-Term Care Insurance can step in.

Long-Term Care Insurance is designed to provide coverage for the caregiving services someone needs when they are unable to care for themselves because of aging, chronic illness or a disability. These services may include assistance with activities like bathing, dressing, and eating. Currently the average cost of in-home care in the United States being $4,957 a month and nursing home care at $7,908 a month, for a shared room, according to Genworth Financial's Cost of Care Survey.

As you can see from these numbers the cost of long-term care can add up quickly, causing even the best thought out financial plan to be thrown off track. So it is crucial for small business owners to start planning early, which can lead to lower premiums and the best chance for coverage approval. Long-Term Care Insurance can help protect your assets and ensure you have the financial resources to pay for care, if you should need it.

Small business owners should take some time to evaluate their needs and then meet with their insurance professional and financial advisor to secure their future and the future of their business.

Episode 139: Simplifying Cybersecurity for Small Business Owners

Episode 139: Simplifying Cybersecurity for Small Business Owners

This is Cyber Security Month and we're talking about the essential steps small business owners can take to secure their businesses. Listen to this episode as we give uncomplicated tips even non-techies can implement.

Many small business owners know that protecting their business from cyber threats is essential to the continued operation and success of their business. Some feel it is a daunting and complex task, as well as expensive, to undertake.

As a small business owner you don't have to become a cyber security expert but you must learn and implement the basics. So your first step is to educate yourself on the common threats, which can go a long way in helping you safeguard your business.

Then implement following simple and effective steps, regularly:

  1. Strong passwords
  2. Data Backup
  3. Access Control
  4. Firewall
  5. Antivirus

Creating strong passwords and making sure they are changed every 90 days is a must, because it is your first line of defense to cyber threats.

Data Backup is important because losing your business information can be devastating. Backing up your data regularly is a must. You should also backup your data online, offline and off-site so you can verify it's integrity.

Setting access controls based on job positions, reviewing and adjusting permission regularly will help minimize the number of people that have access to sensitive business information.

A Firewall acts like a gatekeeper for your computer system, and serves as your second line of defense. A Anti-Virus is your third line of defense, detecting and ridding your system of malware. These two tools are crucial and are the backbone of your cyber defense system.

Keeping your computer system, and devices, updated regularly while implementing the above steps will assist you in securing your small business. Also, there are lots of workshops, tutorials and courses you can take like Coursera's free course "Cyber Security for Everyone" to help you stay up with the changing digital landscape.

Episode 136: Overcoming the Top 5 Challenges for Women Business Owners

Episode 136: Overcoming the Top 5 Challenges for Women Business Owners

Happy Women's Business Owner Month! Today we are going to dive into talking about the Top 5 Challenges Women Business Owners have and how to overcome them. Listen to this episode for actionable insights on how to overcome these challenges, so you can keep moving forward to achieve your business goals.

Women have been making remarkable strides in the business world. We have proven that we are resilient and capable business owner , accounting for over $1.8 trillion in revenue. However, our path to success has it's own unique set of challenges.

Our Top 5 Challenges are:

  1. Pricing (Gender pay gap)
  2. Access to capital
  3. Balancing family and business
  4. Imposter Syndrome (Self-doubt)
  5. Breaking through the glass ceiling

Despite the fact that women-owned businesses account for $1.8 trillion in revenue, we are still not receiving equitable pay. Research shows that women entrepreneurs pay themselves 28% less than male entrepreneurs, according to Freshbooks. And 88% of women owned businesses generate less than $100,000 in annual revenue.

Women can implement the same strategies for overcoming pricing challenges as they do in other areas of business. By researching, understanding the value of the services they provide, negotiating and using strategic pricing both revenue and business owner pay can be increased.

Securing funding is a challenging task for almost any business owner, but especially for women. Women owned businesses are primarily self-funded, and seek funding only 25% of the time. Research, according to Fundera, shows that women owned startups only receive 7% of venture capital funding. However women owned businesses have a 69% success rate with crowdfunding. So if you're a women owned business and need access to capital then crowdfunding is a viable solution to obtain the funding you need.

Balancing family and business is challenging for most people, but as we all know it can be done. It is just a matter of understanding their will be times you will be out of balance because of work or project deadlines and family events. With practical strategies like scheduling, prioritizing and getting assistance from others you can effective handle the life work balance issue.

A KPMG study found that 75% of women executives have experienced imposter syndrome in their careers. And approximately 70% of people will experience imposter syndrome in their lives. So, women business owners should take some comfort in knowing they are not alone when it comes to dealing with imposter syndrome. Invest in your personal development, celebrate you achievements, and believe in yourself to overcome self-doubt.

Breaking through the glass ceiling is something women, and minorities, have been attempting to do this for years. By joining associations, attaining leadership positions, creating a strong support network including a mentor, and sponsor, you will be equipped with the tools needed to overcome this challenge, as well as help others to do the same.

These tips serve as a guide to empower women business owners to overcome the Top 5 Challenges Women Business Owners have. In conclusion, women business owners should believe in their abilities, create strong supportive network, and pursue their business dreams with unwavering confidence. And most importantly, remember that you've earned your place in the business world.

Episode 135: 5-Steps to Achieving More

Episode 135: 5-Steps to Achieving More

As Self-Improvement Month comes to a close, this episodes focuses on 5 steps to help you achieve more. Listen to this episode to get tips that will help you move closer to your goals.

In this world filled with endless opportunities and distractions, achieving more can sometimes feel like a serious challenge. Many of us have dreams and aspirations, but transforming them into concrete achievements often requires a clear and actionable plan.

This is where the "The 5-Steps to Achieving More", a simple roadmap, comes into play:

  1. Create specific goals
  2. Create actionable tasks
  3. Create a workable schedule
  4. Avoid social media overload
  5. Get outside or expert help

When creating specific goals you may want to use the SMART criteria (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound), which can help ensure that your goals are not merely wishes but concrete targets. Next you'll want to prioritize your actionable tasks to make sure you're always moving forward, inching closer to your desired goals. Then you should move on to time-blocking techniques, setting boundaries, and identifying your most productive hours to optimize your daily schedule. Because a well-structured schedule harmonizes with your goals, and can turn each day into a step towards achievement. Also, by implementing strict usage limits, on social media you regain control over your time and attention, ensuring that social media remains a tool rather than a distraction. Finally, since success isn't something we usually achieve by ourself, seeking assistance and guidance from external sources will help us to accelerate our timeline.

Networking, identifying mentors, and consider outsourcing the tasks where expertise is lacking. These steps serve as a guideline for those of us on a journey to achieve our definition of success. And, by following these key principles, you empower yourself to navigate the complex landscape of personal and professional growth, making your dreams a reality.

As you already know, success is a journey and with the right roadmap, you can chart your course with confidence. She is passionate about marketing, has almost a decade of experience as an SEO Marketing Specialist and is the Co-Founder of A Website Clinic. Listen to this episode as Snehal shares her recommendations to help you improve your SEO Marketing.

We always hear the experts say that SEO Marketing is important in order for a business to be successful, but many of us still don't know where to start when it comes to SEO Marketing. SEO Marketing organically helps a business attract new and prospective customers. This is a good for all businesses, but especially for startup and small businesses that are operating on a budget because it is not paid advertising.

SEO Marketing will require a business owner to know their customer, learn about keywords and create valuable content. This means a small business owner must know what their customers wants and needs for this type of marketing to work. Also, since search engines are a business and they bring over 60% of all traffic to websites, you need to understand their algorithms. There is a lot to understand when it comes to implementing SEO Marketing. So if you're not getting the results you want or you are ready to increase your sales and visibility with SEO Marketing both on-page and off-page, which I just learned about, be sure to connect with a SEO Marketing professional that has the talent and experience that can get you the results you want.

Episode 129: Women, Business & Alternative Funding

Episode 129: Women, Business & Alternative Funding

This is Women's History Month and we are celebrating all month long. In 2021 women started almost half of all businesses in America, we are literally driving the economy right now. It is time for us to own our accomplishments as business owners. According to the American Express Open, 2019 study, woman-owned businesses account for $1.7 trillion in revenue, employ approximate 9 million workers, and own over 11 million businesses. However we still have ways to go to level the business playing field approximately 4% of us operate a business making $1 million and only 2% of women-owned businesses receive venture capital funding. Listen to this episode to learn an alternative way to fund your business so you can achieve business success.

Securing funding for a business is challenging for all entrepreneurs, however according to a study from Visa, 66% of women-owned businesses have difficulty obtaining the funding they need. This is difficulty is increased by the fact that 44% of women-businesses are operated in low-growth industries, according to the National Women's Business Council (NWBC) Annual 2020 Report. To overcome the financing hurtle we will need to think creatively and start small, so the funding we do have is used effectively and give us the best chance for business success.

Although we've made great strides in business, studies show that we would rather talk about death than money. So as women, we must commit to changing how we think about money as well as how we manage money. We have all heard the saying "what you focus on will grow" so if we women want our money to grow then we are going to have to start focusing on it and making good money management a habit. We can do this by taking classes, reading books and joining groups focused on financial success. There are many resources available to women business owners, and aspiring business owners, such as the Women's Business Center, NASDAQ Milestone Circles, U.S. Women's Chamber of Commerce, SCORE, SBDC, and your local Economic Development Department.

Business Networking: Saturday March 4th, 2023 from 9:30AM - 11:00AM   (Eastern) Black Women Empowering Finances is hosting their monthly networking event. Episode 128: Life Insurance For End Of Life Planning

Episode 128: Life Insurance For End Of Life Planning

This is Life Insurance Awareness Month and we are closing out "Insure Your Love Month"  talking about Funeral Life Insurance Trusts and Final Expense Life Insurance. Listen to this episode to learn more about these types of Life Insurance and how they could benefit you and your loved ones. Remember Life Insurance is the Ultimate Love Letter you can leave to your loved ones.

Making end-of-life arrangements, in advance, for you or another family member can ease some of the difficult decisions, and financial burdens, for the love ones you leave behind. As many of us know, funerals can be expensive ranging from $2k - $15k so prepaying for some, or all of the expenses, helps relieve some emotional stress and financial pressures. Although Final Expense Life Insurance Policies have become more popular over the last few years, Funeral Insurance Trusts are still not common.

Funeral Trusts can be revocable or irrevocable and are mostly used during crisis planning when a loved one is in need of long term care. Many middle class families that worked hard to acquire material and financial assets over the course of their lifetime to leave an inheritance for their heirs find out that when they unexpectantly fall ill and need long term care, they must sell off assets and spend-down their savings to qualify for Medicaid coverage if they did not purchase a Long Term Care Insurance Policy. An irrevocable Funeral Trust allows you to set aside money for your end-of-life expenses and is considered an excluded asset when qualifying for Medicaid coverage. Because Medicaid eligibility rules differ from state to state, we recommend speaking with a lawyer and insurance professional to help determine if a Funeral Trust is right for you.

Final Expense Life Insurance, also called Burial Insurance, is another option you can use to pay for end-of-life expenses too. A Final Expense Life Insurance Policy is usually issued as a Whole Life Insurance Policy with a low amount of coverage ranging from $5k - $50k, so you can have coverage for your entire life. Your loved ones can use the money, from your Final Expense Life Insurance Policy, to pay for funeral expenses or other final expenses, such as medical or legal, that need to be settled after your death.

Episode 126: The Power of Self-Love and Confidence

Episode 126: The Power of Self-Love and Confidence

February is known as the Month of Love, and we're celebrating Self-Love. With Valentine's Day around the corner most people and businesses are focusing on the love between couples. However it is difficult to have and maintain a relationship, personal or business, without first possessing Self-Love. Listen to this episode as we talk about Self-Love and Self-Confidence so you can improve your most important relationship - the one you have with yourself - as well as cultivate and maintain relationships in every area of your life.

Some people mistake selfishness and self-centeredness for Self-Love and Self-Confidence. Selfishness and self-centeredness come from a place of lack and low self-esteem. It is primarily about you using people to get what you want regardless of the harm you do to them in the process. While Self-Love and Self-Confidence come from a place of abundance and high self-esteem. You make decisions that are in your best interest and take into consideration how it impacts others. Self-Love builds self-confidence, through self acceptance and self compassion, allowing you to overcome obstacles in both business and life as well developing mutually respectful relationships.

Love is both a word, a noun, and an action, a verb. So take some time during the Month of Love to increase your Self-Love and Self-Confidence by showing yourself some TLC (tender, love and care), attending courses, reading books and implementing what you learn.

Episode 125: Let's Insure Your Love

Episode 125: Let's Insure Your Love

February is Insure Your Love Month, also known as Life Insurance Awareness Month. Everyone knows about Life Insurance, however almost 50% of people still do not own a policy, and 26 million need more coverage than they have regardless of the income level. Listen to this episode as we talk about Life Insurance and why it is important to protect both your family and your business.

The top reasons people do not purchase life insurance is price, other priorities and not knowing what type of coverage to buy. There are many different types of Life Insurance policies and there are advantages and disadvantages to each of them. There are two main types of Life Insurance, which are Term and Whole Life Insurance. Term Life Insurance has a low premium, which makes the policy more affordable, however it only lasts for a specific period of time ,such as 10 years, then you will have to purchase another policy. Whole Life Insurance has a higher premium but it does accumulate cash, so it is considered an asset, and will provide coverage until you reach age 121.

Take time to think about your family's needs, do some research on Life Insurance and talk with an insurance professional today. Remember that Life Insurance helps protect your loved ones financial future if something happens to you, and it will be remembered by them as your ultimate love letter.

Episode 124: Financial Wellness and Your Small Business

Episode 124: Financial Wellness and Your Small Business

This is Financial Wellness Month and we are closing out our series on Financial Wellness for Small Businesses. We have given lots of information on things to do to help your business become financially well, but we have yet to talk about generating income. Listen to this episode as we talk about increasing your business income which is essential to your business being financially well.

Many of us went into business for ourselves because we had a passion for what we do, wanted time freedom and better pay. However we cannot stay in business if we do not generate income. Making money is just as important as the reason we started our business in the first place.

Striving to provide excellent customer service and make sales is important, but knowing your numbers as a business owner is even more important. Some business owners believe that just because their business generates a large amount in sales that their business "Financially Well". With approximately 80% of small business owners handle their business' accounting, according to the 2022 State of Financial Literacy Survey, and only 40% percent considering themselves financially literate, according to a Intuit survey, we may find their business is braking even or losing money when we dig deeper into their financial data.

It is just as important for a small business to minimize expenses, collect accounts receivables, manage cash flow and investments as it is to provide top notch customers service and make sales. A business owner can make time to learn these skills or hire financial professionals to help them secure the economic future of their business, and assist in their business becoming financially well.

For help to make sure you are starting a Financially Well Business contact your local Economic Development Center, SBA, SBDC, SCORE or the Small Business Supplier Diversity department for your state.

Episode 123: Identity Theft & The Small Business Owner

This is Financial Wellness Month and we are celebrating "Financial Wellness for the Small Business". We will talk about Identity Theft and Cyber breaches when you are a Small Business Owner or Entrepreneur. Listen to this episode to hear tips to help keep your business safe online and offline.

With 47% of Americans experiencing Financial Identity Theft in 2020, according to the Aite-Novarica Group, and a 68% increase in the number of data compromises in 2021, according to the Identity Theft Research Center (ITRC) it is no wonder it seems like we hear about this on a regular basis. These days it is difficult, if not impossible, to run a business without being online. A business uses email, sometimes multiple times a day. And has a website which collects data, by allowing customers to make purchases or schedule an appointment online. As technology improves, businesses will increase their reliance on the internet in order to reduce costs and keep up with customer demand.

For these reasons it is important for both individuals and business owners to take precautions to  protect themselves, their business and customers from Identity Theft and Cyber breaches. Credit card and business or personal loan fraud were in the "Top 5" types of Identity Theft in 2021, according to the FTC Consumer Sentinel Network. Visit FTC.gov for free resources to assist you in protecting your business or securing your operations if you have already had a breach and are not sure where to start. Episode 121: Distractions And Still Being Productive

Episode 121: Distractions And Still Being Productive

We all want to be as productive as possible so our business ventures can be successful. However, distractions always seem to arise and sometimes take us completely off track. Since distractions are a part of life and business there is no way around them. But we still need to be produce to maintain our business and achieve our goals. Listen to this episode as we talk about tips to for handling distractions and still being productive.

As business owners and entrepreneurs many of us define productivity as getting things done and achieving our goals. Many of us create a list to keep track of all the activities we need to perform. In order for us to feel that we are productive we must complete all, or the majority, of the tasks on our list. When we are unable to complete all, or some, of the listed activities many of us often feel that we have not been productive regardless of how many tasks were on our list.

What we may want to consider is that there are only so many hours in day, and we may be underestimating how much time it actually takes to complete each task, especially if we are a one person show. In this case, our lack of productivity is not because of a lack of effort but in fact a result of improper scheduling and not having a team. If this is the case for you, as it is with many entrepreneurs and small business owners, then learning to schedule more efficiently as well as bringing on additional team members may be the solution to you satisfying your productivity goals.

Episode 120: Let's Preping For Your Best Year Yet!

This is the last week of the year and, as we close out this year, many of us have reflected on the past year and are getting ready to prepare for the New Year. Listen to this episode as we talk about tips to make next year your best year yet.

Hopefully you have already reflected on the past year, decided on the changes you need to make,  and started on making your plans for next year. As you do your planning be sure to include a "Plan B" for the obstacles that always seem to come up. Some of us repeat the same year over and over again, because we don't plan for the unexpected, though inevitable, obstacles life will most assuredly put in our path.

Taking time to plan ahead as well as create an alternative plan to deal with possible obstacles, before they come up, will give you a better chance at achieving your goals. This will also help you become more adaptable when things come up that you don't have an alternative plan for. And, this one change could help propel you to your next level in the New Year.

Episode 119: Reflecting On The Year

Episode 119: Reflecting On The Year

The end of the year is near, and now is the time most of us start reflecting on what happened throughout the year. Listen to this episode as we talk about Reflecting On The Year as well as tips to help you both evaluate and celebrate it.

For some of us it was a good year and we achieved some or all of our goals. For others this year may have been challenging and therefore our goals, or the majority of them, may not have been met. As we take this time to look over our calendars and goal sheets we can see what we did right as well as what could've been done better. As we reflect on these things it is important for us to remember to celebrate the journey.

We automatically celebrate what went right this year, such as achieving our goals, because we feel good. When things go wrong, such as not hitting our goals, many of us automatically replay the event over and over again mind. This process of replaying negative events can impact our thinking and turn us into our own worst critic. At this point we must take control over our thinking process to prevent us from becoming stagnant, or worse giving up all together.

To take control of our thought process, we should focus on the tasks that need to be done and complete those tasks so we can create quick wins. By creating quick wins we rebuild confidence and create momentum to keeps us moving forward. We should also learn to celebrate the activity milestones we achieved along the way even if did not achieve our goals, because by investing our time and energy to learn why things didn't give us the results we wanted and the adjustments we need to make going forward so we can meet and exceed our goals the next time.

Episode 118: The Planning Before Writing The Business Plan

Episode 118: The Planning Before Writing The Business Plan

This is National Write A Business Plan Month and we are celebrating it all month long. As Entrepreneurs and Small Business Owners we always hear about the importance of writing a business plan but we rarely ever hear about the planning we should do before writing it. Listen to this episode as our host shares some tips and ideas on the planning you should do before the business plan so you can have both the business and life you dreamed of.

Your vision, your values and the people you surround yourself with make a difference between your business plan becoming a bookend on your shelf or an actual roadmap for business success. The vision you have for your business and your life will help you stay motivated when the tough times come, as Murphy's Law says "If anything can go wrong, it will go wrong". Understanding your values is important, because you need to know what is nonnegotiable for you in both life and business.

Also, the people you surround yourself with is important, because the people you associate with will either be the wind beneath your wings helping you soar or will be the heavy weights that help you sink. If you are consistently surrounded by individuals that are negative, in time you will become negative. If you are constantly around positive individuals over time you will eventually become positive, and hopefully you're already positive so you will just become an even more positive person. And remember what Zig Zigler says "Your attitude, not your aptitude will determine your altitude", so control your personal environment by spending time with positive people and minimizing, or completely eliminating, the time you spend with negative people.

By taking time to plan, your life and business, before writing the business plan will allow you to have a plan that fits where you are right now and where desire to go in the future.

Episode 117: What's In Your Business Plan?

Episode 117: What's In Your Business Plan?

December is Write Your Business Plan Month, and in this episode we will talk about types of business entities and some basics to think about when writing your business plan. Be sure to listen to this episode for tips on important things small business owners should know, and keeping your business compliant.

Most businesses are started at the kitchen table. We usually begin informally as independent contractors or freelancers. After we've made some money and start to believe we can turn what we've been doing into a real business, we make it legal and become Sole Proprietors.

Over 70% of businesses in the U.S. are Sole Proprietorships. A Sole Proprietorship is the fastest and least expensive way to start a business. In some states if you do business using your own name then you are not required to have a business license, which means there are minimal barriers to keep you from starting a business. The good thing about a Sole Proprietorship is that you are in complete control and get to keep all the profits. But there is a disadvantage to being able to keep all the profits, and that is that the business owner's personal finances and the finances of the business are considered one in the same. And, because there is no separation when it comes to personal and business finances a Sole Proprietor could lose both there personal assets and business assets if legal problems were to arise.

For this reason, when writing your business plan you should take time to research the different type of business entities available to determine which one would be right for the business you're starting. Each type of business entity has it's own advantages and disadvantages, so speaking with experts will also be important in choosing the best entity structure for your business. Having a team of reliable experts will assist you in growing your business, as well as help keep your business in compliance with State and Federal laws. Be sure to visit SCORE, SBA, SBDC, WBC and your local Economic Development Department for free or low-cost assistance.

Episode 115: Things and People to Be Thankful For Today and Everyday!

Episode 115: Things and People to Be Thankful For Today and Everyday!

Happy Thanksgiving! Today serves as reminder for us to spend time with the people we care most about, family and friends. This is also a time to remember all the people and things we have that we should be grateful for. Many of us take for granted the things we've achieved in our life, the people who are always in our corner that love and accept us for who we are in spite of our flaws, as well as the things we have in our possession right now.

Sometimes we spend so much time focusing on what we don't have, what we've lost, or what we want for our future that we do not appreciate, or we forget ,to be thankful for our present. We should be grateful the simple things, as well as the big things in life, like having a place to live, food to eat, good health, family and friends that love us. There is no better time than now to forgive those that hurt you, to make amends with the people you've hurt, to forgive yourself for the mistakes and bad decisions you've made. Because as the saying goes "The past is the past, the future is a mystery and the present in a gift", take some time today to enjoy the gift of present and make cherished memories with those you hold near and dear.

Episode 114: Entrepreneurs, Are You "End of Year" Ready?

Episode 114: Entrepreneurs, Are You "End of Year" Ready?

This is Global Entrepreneurship Month and we're celebrating all month long. This episode we talk about making sure your business is in good standing as we close out the year. Listen to this episode to make sure your business is in compliance to save you time, money and stress.

As Entrepreneurs and Small Business Owners we wear many hats, especially when we're starting out. We are are excited about having a business and usually so busy with running it's daily operations that we put off doing, what deem as important but not urgent, paperwork until the last minute. This is sometimes necessary but not always in our best interest.

As business owners we should schedule time, regularly, to take care of paperwork that keeps your business in compliance with Federal and State laws. Now that the "End-of-Year" is near, there is no better time than right now to start getting your papers in order. At this time of year many businesses are beginning to organize their accounting information in preparation for filing taxes and their annual business insurance audits. Since these activities must be done annually, it might be a good idea to take time to create a checklist for your business, so keeping your business in compliance can become a little easier each year.

Episode 113: From Border Crossing to Successful Entrepreneur

Episode 113: From Border Crossing to Successful Entrepreneur

This is Global Entrepreneurship Month and we are celebrating all month long. Today we are joined by our special guest Carlos Castro. Carlos is the founder of Todos Supermarket and the Hispanic Organization for Leadership and Action. He has served on the boards of Prince William Chamber of Commerce, Youth for Tomorrow, Potomac Health Foundation, Hylton Performing Arts Center, Northern Virginia Community College Education Foundation, and the Northern Virginia Workforce Development Board. Listen to this episode as Carlos shares his "Top 3 Recommendations" to achieve success and the most important lesson he learned along his entrepreneurship journey.

In this age of the internet, many people believe success is easy and happens overnight. It is astounding the number of people that are trying become the next overnight sensation because of this myth. What these people are failing to take into account is the amount of time a person spends preparing to for their opportunity. They usually spend a minimum of 6 years investing time, energy and hard work to earn the coveted label "Overnight Success".

Many people either almost give up, or give up completely, during the preparation phase of success because things are just not moving fast enough for them. It is during those times when you feel like giving up that one must fall back on their faith in themselves, their ideas, and their dreams in order to ignite an inner strength to help carry them to the finish line of success. But in order to reach that finish line, you must first be clear on what your definition of success is. You should to spend time thinking about how your business will change your lifestyle, and if it is the type of change you want. And if it is not a change you're willing to live with, then you should be on the lookout for the next opportunity that will allow you to both achieve success and the lifestyle you desire. Clarity, planning, focus, courage and hard work will go a long way in helping you achieve your goals on the Entrepreneurship path.

You can connect with Carlos by sending an email to CCastro@TodosSupermarket. To learn more about Carlos and his journey to success be sure to pick up a copy of his book Mi Camino Al Exito and for those of you that don't speak Spanish stay on the lookout for his English version that will be coming soon.

Episode 112: Entrepreneurship - Money, Success and Failure

Episode 112: Entrepreneurship - Money, Success and Failure

This is Global Entrepreneurship Month and we are celebrating all month long! Entrepreneurship makes the world go round. They create and deliver the products or services we use everyday. Without Entrepreneurs we would still be lighting our homes with candles or riding horses and buggies instead driving cars, flying on airplanes and using lights powered by electricity in our homes. There is a lot to celebrate when it comes to Entrepreneurship. But there are also some things we should be aware  of when it comes to Entrepreneurship too. Listen to this episode as we talk about the top 3 reasons businesses fail and what you can do to overcome them.

Many people become Entrepreneurs because they want time freedom, increased income and to follow our passion. The good news is you can have all of that as a Entrepreneur. However we must realize that there will be times when your income fluctuates, on the downside, and it feels like there's not enough time in the day to get everything you need to get done, done. This is when "mind over matter" is going to have to kick in, if you're going to make your business a success. Striving for balance in life and business is very popular right now. As Entrepreneurs however we need to understand, as well as prepare for, the times in our lives and business when we will most assuredly be out of balance.  During these times when we are overextending ourselves we must make time for self-care, even if we can only carve out 15 minutes. This is crucial to help minimize stress, keep you from burning out and allow you to maintain healthy relationships.

If you're on of the many Entrepreneurs, or Small Business Owners, who need to collect their accounts receivables then you're probably very interest the book I mentioned, Collect The Cash: The Sale is Not Complete Until The $$$$ Is In The Bank! by Dee Bowden.

Episode 111: Entrepreneurship isn't easy but it's worth it!

Episode 111: Entrepreneurship isn't easy but it's worth it!

Today we are celebrating Black Entrepreneurs Day and National Women's Business Month with our expert guest RaShida Roberts. RaShida is a Personal Finance Coach, author of the book Find Your Spark: 7 Steps to Ditch Debt, Stress and Ignite Your Financial Lifestyle, founder of Target Financial and One Spark University. Listen to this episode as we'll be talking about the ups and downs of entrepreneurship, as well as busting some myths.

The title of this episode says it all - "Entrepreneurship isn't easy but it's worth it!".  We always hear stories about the Entrepreneurs that risked it all and found success, like the proverbial Over Night Sensation. These types of stories lead many people to believe that becoming a successful Entrepreneur is easy, and it does not take a lot of time or work to achieve. However if you ask almost any Entrepreneur about their journey to success, they'll share a story that takes you on the trip of a lifetime with all their highs, lows, curves and everything in between. But the one thing they commonly say is that they believed in themself, their product or service and that is what gave them the strength to continue on until they achieved their goal.

This reminds us that confidence and perseverance are the difference makers when it comes to failure or success, in both business and life. So if your on the path to entrepreneurship, be sure to make time become a master of your craft and, the master of your mind to increase your chances of success. If you're not sure where to start, then begin by taking courses, reading books and surrounding yourself with growth minded people.

Episode 110: Women, Leadership & Business

Episode 110: Women, Leadership & Business

This is National Women's Small Business Month and we are continuing our celebration. Today we are talking about Women, Leadership & Business. Women owned businesses grow by and average of 84% and add $13 Trillion to the economy globally. And that number is expected to increase to $18 Trillion next few years. Leadership, as we have learned from many experts, is one of the keys to the rise or fall of a business. Be sure to listen to this episode for some great tips on how you can lead your team, while creating a more positive and productive environment.

Many of us commonly think of someone with a title as a leader. However, you can be a leader without a title. Your character and actions determine whether or not you're a leader. Have you ever noticed that whenever you're in a group setting, with people you don't know, that you seem to always be chosen as the presenter or head of the group. It is because of your character, and the manner in which you carry yourself, that caused the people in your group to see you as a leader. Everyday in our life we are leaders. We lead ourselves, and a lot of times we lead our business colleagues without intending to do so because someone is always watching, in this always connected world.  So spend time developing the leader inside of you to take your business, team and life to the next level.

Episode 109: A Leadership Framework for Outstanding Success with Michelle Gardner-Ince a.k.a. "The G-I Factor"

This is National Women's Small Business Month, and we are continuing our celebration of Women Business Owners with our special guest Michelle Gardner-Ince a.k.a. "G-I". Michelle is an award-winning transformational leader with over two decades of experience. Michell Gardner-Ince is a Military Veteran, retired Air Force Colonel, the founder of G-I Strategic Solutions, and the current Director of Woman Veteran-Owned Small Business Initiative for the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. She is on a mission to bring female veteran entrepreneurs together, and to position and enable them to achieve their definition of success, as well as assist with overcoming the obstacles that often stand in the way. Listen to this episode as Michelle "G-I" shares her top tips to help you become a great leader and  achieve the level of business success you desire.

As a business owner we wear many different hats.  However, at some point we will need to take off a hat or two and work with other people to achieve our goals. Working with a team of independent contractors, or employees, requires effective leadership skills. As the leader you are responsible for sharing your vision and goals with the team, this serves as everyone's roadmap to success.

Every leader needs to develop their own style. But a leader's level of enthusiasm, and their ability to communicate as well as delegate are essential to creating a thriving company culture. Tracking KPI's is important, but empowering our team will give them the confidence to take the actions necessary that will allow us as a company to meet or exceed our KPI's. As the saying goes "It takes teamwork to make the dream work"

You can continue the conversation by connecting with Michelle Gardner-Ince on LinkedIn. And be sure to join her every Wednesday at 7:00PM (EST) for her Linkedin LIVE - Equity in Government Contracting.

Episode 108: Women, Business, Connection and Success!

October is National Women's Small Business Month and we are celebrating all month long. This month "The Secrets of Earning Money Show" will be highlighting Women Entrepreneurs and Business Owners daily on our social media platforms. In today's episode we talk about stats and tips on how women business owners contribute to the economy and things we can do to increase our chances creating a successful business.

Approximately 50% of women-owned businesses are in three (3) industries - Other Services, Healthcare and Social Assistance, and Professional/Scientific Services. Women owned businesses generate over $1.8 Trillion in revenue and employ 8% of the workforce. We have made so great strides of the years, but with only 26 Women CEO's at Fortune 500 Companies, and 88% of Women Entrepreneurs generating less than $100k in revenue, we still have a long way to go to level the playing field in business.

We Women are a driving force in the global economy. We account for 36% of all small businesses, yet we only receive 7% of venture capital funding. Many Women-Owned businesses are started from scratch. And 61% of Black Women Business Owners self fund 100% of their business start-up costs. There are many challenges all business owners face but studies show that some of the main challenges are lack or support, or encouragement, and access resources. There are many organizations that offer resources to help small business owners, and Women Business Owners specifically, to succeed. Be sure to reach out to the SBA (Small Business Administration, your local SBDC (Small Business Development Office), the Women's Business Chamber of Commerce, as well as many other Women Business organization for assistance and to connect with like minded Women Entrepreneurs.

Episode 107: Life Insurance: The Gift That Keeps On Giving with Tianya Edgerton

Episode 107: Life Insurance: The Gift That Keeps On Giving with Tianya Edgerton

This is Life Insurance Awareness Month and we've been celebrating all month long. Today we are joined by a special guest Tianya Edgerton. Tianya is a 16 year veteran of the financial services industry and licensed in both insurance and investments. She is the proud owner of Tianya Edgerton State Farm Insurance Agency. In today's episode Tianya gives her top recommendations on Life Insurance. Listen now to find out why she says "Life Insurance is the gift that keeps on giving".

Over 100 million Americans say they either don't have Life Insurance or do not have enough Life Insurance. And when asked, the number one reason they give is they believe Life Insurance is expensive. However according to Life Happens and LIMRA, most Americans overestimate the cost of Life Insurance by three times the amount it actually costs.

Many say their family would experience financial hardship if the primary income earner unexpectedly passed away.  Yet, approximately 47% of American adults are delaying their purchase of Life Insurance. Knowing the negative financial impact your death could cause your loved ones should be enough to inspire you to take action and purchase a Life Insurance policy now, or if nothing else get an accurate quote. It costs nothing to call and speak with an agent, but it could mean everything to your family during their time of need.

Episode 105: Self Improvement Month & You

Episode 105: Self Improvement Month & You

National Self-Improvement Month is here! How are you celebrating Self-Improvement Month this September? If there's a change you would like to make in your life or business, what's stopping you from taking action? Well, in today's episode we'll talk about Self-Improvement and give you tips and resources to help you get off the Self-Improvement rollercoaster, and make Self-Improvement changes that last.

Self-Improvement isn't as complicated or complex as the $11 billion dollar industry makes it seem. Self-Improvement is nothing more than you simply making a decision to change and then taking action to improve yourself, your life and or business. Your Self-Improvement journey should be personally selected by YOU not someone else.

Many of us treat our goals for Self-Improvement like a rollercoaster ride, we're excited so we jump in a go full steam ahead then over time our excitement fizzles out. Then something gets us excited again, and we start the process all over. The problem is that many of us have not made the decision to make lasting change because the goal we chose was something other people or society as a whole told us we should make our goal. However, when we set a goal for Self-Improvement it needs to be a goal that we truly believe will make a difference in our life, and or our business, so we will have the fortitude to stick with it until our goal is achieved, so the change will be long lasting.

There are endless possibilities as to what YOU can choose for your Self-Improvement goal. It could be improved health, reading more, reducing stress, finding love, elevating your presentation or money management skills, learning something new, or finally finishing those important activities you been putting on the back burner for months, if not years. Whatever it is that you want to improve about yourself, in your life or in your business, there is no better time to get started than right now. As we are closing out the 3rd Quarter of the year, starting now gives you the opportunity to end this year strong. And it gives you a jumpstart on making next year your best year yet.

Here's a list of recommended books and courses: Lead The Field by Earl Nightingale; The Science of Achievement by Napoleon Hill; Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill; Think and Grow Rich a Black Choice by Dennis Kimbro a The Napoleon Hill Foundation; Think and Grow Rich a Latino Choice by Lionel Sosa and The Napoleon Hill Foundation; Act Like a Success by Steve Harvey; Who Owns the Ice House by Clifton Taulbert; Multiple Streams of Income by Robert G Allen; The Success Principles by Jack Canfield; and Psycho-Cybernetics by Dr. Maxwell Maltz.

Episode 104: Insurance - Your Foundation for Financial Wellness

This is Life Insurance Awareness Month and we are celebrating all month long. Today we are joined by our expert guest Ray Perry Jr. Ray has is a licensed financial professional. He has over four decades of experience in public service. In 2016 he began focusing on his passion to empower people and families to become their best through the "Five F's" - Faith, Family, Fitness, Finance and Friendship. You can often hear Ray say "If you can see the vision, catch the vision, and you can have that vision for life!"

Financial Wellness is trendy right now, but hopefully it is a trend that will stand the test of time. With money issues being the number one reason for divorce and running out of money in retirement being the number one fear, Financial Wellness is essential to living an enjoyable life. Financial Wellness isn't just about the dollar amount in your bank account, because you can have a 7 figure bank account because of working yourself into an early grave. So what good would it have done you to have worked so hard just to have to spend all the money you earned on medical care instead of being able to enjoy the life you dreamed of, in your later years. Just like you invest your time in eating healthy and exercising regularly to improve your overall wellness, you should also  invest your time learning how to earn, save, invest and manage your money to improve your Financial Wellness. Listen to this episode as Ray gives you his Top Tips to help you understand why Life Insurance is the foundation of your Financial Wellness. Episode 103: Women, Caregiving & Life Insurance

Episode 103: Women, Caregiving & Life Insurance

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month and we'll be talking about Life Insurance all month long. Today's episode talks about why planning in advance and having a Life Insurance Policy in place is important, but even more so for women. Many of us think nothing of opening a jar of jelly, pouring a glass of water, feeding and dressing ourselves until something happens and either we or our loved one are unable to perform these simple daily living tasks. Doing financial and Life Insurance planning in advance can help ease any negative financial impact that may arise from a unexpected life changing event. Life changing events can happen at any time and, with the majority of people living paycheck to paycheck, one financial setback can make it extremely difficult to recover from.

Studies show that 75% of caregivers are women and that women make up 65% of the elderly poor, which highlights the need for women to make financial literacy, as well as financial and insurance planning, a priority.  There is no limit to the amount of advice out there on insurance and financial planning. The key is creating a plan that is right for you and your financial situation. Don't just rely on the general advice given by influencers, both big and small.  Do your own research by reading books, taking classes, watching videos, talking to friends, and  sitting down with professionals that understand your unique circumstances so you can create a plan that works for you and your loved ones.
