S3 EP6 Civics Lessons with Lashonda "LJ" Holloway
Lj Holloway (Democratic Party) is running for election to the U.S. House to represent Florida's 5th Congressional District. She declared candidacy for the Democratic primary on August 18, 2020. She stopped to discuss her campaign, and candidly shared the importance of voting and offers a really understandable, relatable message on civic engagement and why she began a career in politics.
About Lashonda Holloway
LaShonda "Lj" HOLLOWAY has launched a People Powered Campaign to Rise Up against the status quo of Underachieving Politicians in Florida's Fifth Congressional District. She is the ONLY Candidate who resides in Duval County and is a former Capitol Hill staffer. LaShonda knows firsthand how Members kowtow to Lobbyists. Frustrated with a Congress that offers thoughts and prayers rather than Gun Sense Legislation, Holloway plans to return to the Hill to more effectively REPRESENT the People of the Fifth Congressional District. As a Government professional in Corporate America, she sold the largest deal in History to United States Customs as an Executive at Lexis Nexis, to wit, then--4 Star General Colin Powell after 9/11 said, "Thanks to Lexis Nexis we were able to track down Al-Qaeda." LaShonda J. HOLLOWAY is the Founder of All About HealthCARE Advocates and is the host of the LJ Holloway Show. She is the ONLY candidate in the race who resides in Duval County and is determined to bring the seat back to Jacksonville. She started All About HealthCARE Advocates after overcoming a Brain tumor and has awarded more than 40 Scholarships through The Celebration of Life Annual Benefit to Students who major in Health or Science. Holloway has always spoken TRUTH to POWER as she helped form a group at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency called "NO FEAR" that resulted in the NO FEAR ACT that provided Whistle Blower protections to Scientists that has since been repealed. QUOTE: Holloway said, “we’re going into a new decade and can't have the same old Members of Congress afraid to effectuate change in the best interest of the People. After all, Schools should be a safe haven, not a place for mass shootings.

S3 EP5 Multi-Grammy Award-winning drummer and percussionist Ulysses Owens Jr.
Heralded as a “powerhouse of a showman” (Glide Magazine), a “legitimate jazz triple threat” (Critical Jazz) and a drummer who “take[s] a back seat to no one” (The New York Times), performer, producer, and educator Ulysses Owens Jr. goes the limit in the jazz world and beyond.
One of the most sought-after drummers of his generation, Owens sets the mark. From GRAMMY award-winning performances with Christian McBride’s acclaimed Trio and Big Band to world tours with Kurt Elling and Joey Alexander, Owens’s artistic command of percussion has earned him positions in some of the most successful jazz ensembles of the 21st century. Owens’s reverence for tradition distinctly manifests in his straight-away playing style, but it is the versatility of his talent— his unique ability to manipulate texture and create penetrating musical shapes— that attracts the attention of jazz’s heavy hitters. His performance catalog includes collaborations with Nicholas Payton, Wynton Marsalis, Monty Alexander, Dianne Schurr, Renee Fleming, and Mulgrew Miller, just to name a few.
Owens is Artistic Director for Don’t Miss a Beat, Inc., a youth-empowerment nonprofit organization founded by his family in his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida. To find out more about Ulysses's work, projects and performance schedule, visit his website, usojazzy.com.

S2 S10: Emmy Award Winning News Producer and Author Nikeshia Elise Williams
“I’M A BLACK WOMAN
WHO WRITES FOR BLACK WOMEN
ABOUT BLACK WOMEN.
PERIOD.”
— Nikeshia Elise Williams
Damien Lamar was compelled to speak more with this week’s guest who he originally met at a PB&J (Party Benefit & Jam) Jam Session at the Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida a few weeks ago. There, Nikeshia Elise Williams presented her 20x20 slide and “spoke about the state of education and how despite decades of attempts at integration, schools are still segregated which has led specifically to the situation that Duval County School finds themselves in; with the fight over the half-cent sales tax, [and] the schools that it would benefit, and the political wrangling in the city over that issue.” She discussed the parallels of the education system in Chicago and feels the root cause are based on issues surrounded by race. “I feel like across the United States, teachers are taken for granted. They’re not protected. They don’t get paid well enough. They don’t get the credit for what they do (especially at the elementary or secondary level.) … We, as a nation need to take better care of our teachers because are literally taking care of our children.”
About Nikeshia Elise Williams
Nikesha Elise Williams is an Emmy award-winning news producer and author. S2 S9: Who Really Let the Dogs Out?
Producer, songwriter and music lover with deep roots in Northeast Florida, Joe Gonzalez aka Papa Wheelie shares his story behind the song "Who Let the Dogs Out," which became a hit for the Bahamian group Baha Men in 1998.
“Sunshine is all it takes to illuminate. I’m not on the hunt for anything. But there’s definitely some things in the dark. So, I’m glad this movie’s out there to help highlight the reality….It was the hook so good that everyone wanted it.” — Joe Gonzalez
Joe recounts how he and his friend began as two rappers who met at the Westside Skills Center, where they studied commercial art, but Joe's upbringing in a converted funeral home allowed him to explore music differently which led him to become a beatmaker for Brett's raps.
See the Jacksonville premiere of “Who Let The Dogs Out” documentary at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sun-Ray Cinema, 1028 Park St. in Five Points. It’s a benefit for hurricane relief in the Bahamas.

Over the course of the evening, guests experience the beauty and value of their city's public spaces by participating in the unexpected. Beyond the spectacle and elegance of the dinner itself, guests are brought together from diverse backgrounds by good taste and a love of beauty. Le Dîner en Blanc recalls the elegance and glamor of high French society, and guests engage one another, knowing that they are taking part in a truly magical event. There are no disruptions: no car traffic, no pedestrian traffic—only amazed and astonished looks from passersby observing the scene before them. And participants, like spectators, wonder whether it's all not a dream…" More information at http://jacksonville.dinerenblanc.com

About Christopher Clark:
Christopher Clark is an emerging visual artist. His body of work celebrates black identity and captures the roots of black culture and its beauty. Clark uses various mediums such as acrylic and watercolor paints, ink, and mixed media. He has participated in group exhibits at Downtown Cigar Lounge and Delo Studios.
In 2015 Clark embarked on a project to write and illustrate a children's book. The book's main character was inspired by his daughter, who at the time was 3 years old. Clark's objective was clear as he started work on the book. He wanted to make a story where the main character looked like his daughter and other children in their community.
Clark finished writing and illustrating his debut children's book, titled "Glonda's Hair," in early 2017. The narrative focuses on Glonda, a young African American girl and, as the title suggests, her hair. Clark uses the book as a teaching tool, encouraging young girls to embrace their natural looks and celebrate their individual beauty.
Clark received a proof copy of "Glonda's Hair" and is now working with a publishing company to secure distribution. Clark has also begun working on his second book, titled "The Little Artist," which will be a children's book of poetry paying homage to the authors of Clark's youth, such as Dr. Suess and Shel Silverstein. Like "Glonda's Hair," "The Little Artist" is inspired by his daughter.
Clark isn't just an artist and a father. He is also an advocate for young black artists. Clark invests in his community by serving as a mentor, providing guidance to black youth interested in the arts.

About Jaimz Mallett
Born in the backwoods of Mississippi, Jaimz Mallett began his musical journey atop the aggravated cords of heavy and southern rock at a juvenile age. He spent most his teens in Memphis, TN where he was classically trained in a wide range of musical disciplines. With his bluesy surroundings and the life experiences of not many his age, Jaimz vastly developed into an organic artist whose outlook on life seeped through his writings and voice. As a band member, Jaimz received vocal coaching from renowned industry vets, who gladly took him under their wing simply because of his undeniably raw talent. Jaimz truly found his style, after a stint in the army. He came out of the service with the soul of Jimi, the style of Lenny, and the beats of Three 6 Mafia. Jaimz Mallet, now widely known as Jai.Mal is at a point in his career where it has all come together personally, professionally and musically. Through the guidance of his mentors, whose years of experience has helped him turn this gift into a functioning business, Jai.Mal now has the ability to be a solo RnB star, a world-class guitarist and rocker, and an industry beat maker with hits that won’t stop!
