Yesterday, Rach and I talked a bit about consent at the gaming table. The conversation that has popped up about that cast has been amazing, both on YouTube and on Facebook, and thanks to that ongoing conversation, I think I missed something yesterday. Communication at the gaming table has to occur before consent can even be an issue, and part of that communication is being honest with your GM before the session even starts.

I delve right back into The Arduin Trilogy and take a look at Dave's essay on Player Character Types in fantasy games. After that, I take a short peek at the Individualization of New Player Characters.

Today I take a peek at The First Fantasy Campaign, in particular, the Original Blackmoor Magic System. There is much hinted at, yet little is detailed.

TSR Con has been moved from the weekend of July 4th (when every hotel within 15 miles was likely sold out to non-gamers) to the same weekend as Gary Con (where every hotel within 15 miles is likely sold out to gamers). A not so subtle attempt to steal bandwidth. Also, there is a Star Frontiers Game listed for sale at the Dungeon Hobby Shop Museum, but it's out of stock. Actually, it hasn't been published yet, nor has it been announced, but the sales page is up.

Paizo states it has voluntarily recognized the United Paizo Workers Union. About 40 of Paizo's freelancers stopped working last month with a list of demands. Those demands have now turned into a singular demand - for Paizo to recognize the United Paizo Workers Union.

Paizo staffers have formed a union. It is not yet known if the company will recognize the union. Paizo is likely the only TTRPG company with enough staff to make the idea of unionizing viable.

Back in the old-time, Google+ and Forums ruled the roost. Blogs were looming large. Today, Google+ is dead, blogs are dying, and forums are suffering. It is the day of social media, podcasts, and YouTube. Do you read RPG forums? Which ones? If you don't, why not?

No one has "game designer" as a fall back position in their potential jobs list. You become a "game designer" because you want to create games, not because you failed in some other occupation.  There are so many would be game designers, and so few positions that pay a fulltime salary, that anyone going into the "game industry" as their primary occupation better think good and hard. Because if game design isnt your side gig but your primary occupation, you likely need a lucrative side gig. This does not mean that creatives are paid what they are worth. They are, however, likely paid what the market can bear. The opportunities to make a living wage in game design are few, and as a general rule, only go to the most skilled. Being "good" at game design simply isnt good enough, not when there are thousands of would be game designers vying for a small handful of well paying spots.

As I've been delving into Arduin, I've been treating it almost like an archeological dig. I've been more interested in essays than crunch, and I've been focused on finding how the earlier works have influenced later and current game design. Is this the path the viewers want me to walk?

Continuing my perusal of Arduin, I take a look at Space Aliens & Other Aliens in Fantasy RPGs. Dave's words are likely more inciteful than he had envisioned, and I'm glad to have found them.

Returning to Arduin, I take a look at Dave's article Notes on Alignment and Playability. While I don't agree with everything Dave writes in this piece, it does encourage one to think "outside the box" in terms of alignment.

I spoke earlier today with George DeRosa, VP at Emperors Choice. Emperors Choice owns the TM and Copyright to Arduin and a ton of unpublished works by David Hargrave. I've started to delve deeply into The Arduin Trilogy. Although I own the books in print in their original digest size, I find them easier to read in the nicely laid out and formatted PDF. Today I was struck by Dave's article on DM's Vs Angry Players, and thus I remark on it.

There is a current discussion going on in the gaming community at large about where certain publishers and others in the community stand politically. The Tavern, and by extension, your bartender, is very much apolitical. That apparently is a political stance detested by both extremes.

We were promised the LotFP Referee Book in January of 2019, and even that date was supposed to be a joke, as it was so far in the future it would be completed far in advance. Earlier tonight I played in Session Zero of JoetheLawyer's Fantasy Heartbreaker. The session was a blast, not because of the system (which is fine and mostly familiar) but because of the players. If your online group already knows each other, emulating a face-to-face experience is easier than many think.

We are reaching critical mass when it comes to the first generation of RPG creators, and it no longer surprises me to find out we've lost another, although it saddens me just the same as it ever did. Social media allows you to reach and thank those that have had an influence on your life, as a gamer and beyond. Thank them now, because tomorrow may be too late.

You know the trope: you all meet at a tavern. But why is that? What makes a Tavern, the local watering hole, such an integral part of kicking off so many RPG adventures? There is a certain brush you paint with when members of your development group and playtesters leave glowing reviews for your product and fail to mention their connections to it. I try to mention the connections I have to individuals and companies whenever I review a product, because the potential customer has a right to know of potential biases in said review.

Many jobs have moved to work from home and many tabletop campaigns have moved to Virtual Tabletops -VTTs-. Are we picking up new creators as folks either work from home or are home with enhanced unemployment benefits? Are the changes we have seen in the method of play - the jump in virtual play and virtual conventions - here to stay? Benoit hit his 2nd Monday Goal and the backers of the Marmoreal Tob will be getting Chapter 1 of the Wilderness Expansion and the Wilderness Expansion map. Games Workshop had huge profits during Covid and is giving its employees 5k pound bonuses.

D&D Beyond canceled a contest where they offered digital prizes and claimed rights to use all entries. Lesson learned the hard way. Yep, TSR3 has or is in the process of, abandoning at least three graphical trademarks.  There is an update on the Marmoreal Tomb Kickstarter - Benoist has hit his first due date and succeeded. Sadly, Brian Fitzpatrick of Moebius Adventures passed away this weekend from an accident during rafting.

Over 40% of D&D 5e players are under 25. I was shown an article by a Taverner which went over some of the D&D 5e demographics. With only 11% of D&D 5e players being 40 years plus, what does that mean to the OSR market, which largely skews older. ’m out and about and figured I’d share a follow up on last night’s episode regarding WotC’s survey numbers and some of the comments in regards. Apparently, xenophobia has been removed from the Ravenloft 5e release. I've always seen xenophobia as a primary characteristic of Ravenloft, no matter if the PCs were humans or demihumans, they were strangers and a possible danger. Pathfinder 1e was a success in large part to much of the D&D community rejecting D&D 4e. Pathfinder 2e is a direct response to the success of D&D 5e. Why is Pathfinder losing market share to Dungeons & Dragonns 5e? Why isn't Pathfinder 2e the success that Pathfinder 1e was right out of the box? I use years worth of Roll20 Orr Reports looking at the trends for Pathfinder and 5e.

Another twofer ;) Paizo has launched their SECOND Pathfinder 2 Humble Bundle in the 21 months since Pathfinder 2 released in the summer of 2019. Two Humble Bundles of new material for a new RPG system are the signs of failure, not just of market share, but of management. Paizo had its birth by being formed to directly support the 3x edition of Dungeons & Dragons. Will its only way to save itself be to support D&D 5e? I never used to allow alcohol at the game table. I’ve been asked by many over the past few years for a digest-sized edition of the Swords & Wizardry Continual Light rules. With some extra prompting by James Spahn, it is now in the works. In addition to new material by James Spahn, it will have a professional layout and editing, a new color cover we have commissioned to be completed by James Shields, a new logo, new interior art (B&W or color is up for discussion) and possibly more content, depending on feedback from the community. I'm amazed at the entitlement some folks in the gaming community feel towards content creators, especially those content creators that aren't being paid for their work. I know many gamers are cheap, and a significant number do not invest points in social skills, but there is a limit to the entitlement one can silently tolerate.

For some, the stress of Covid and / or other factors, can bring one to consider actions that are irrevocable. Seeking help for mental and emotional issues isn't weakness, its strength.

Taylor called the show to follow up on my earlier comments about blogs. He's right, blogs aren't dying, but they certainly are receding in importance, at least in the OSR. There are many factors for that: the relative ease one can podcast via Anchor or Vidcast on YouTube, the death of Google+, the advent of self-publishing, and the relatively low cost of entry associate with such (almost any word processing program can get you started and the ability to monetize your creations). In many ways, it's a perfect storm... Still, the entry bar to blogging is still set at Zero, and I still blog on a daily basis at tenkarstavern.com.

I no longer play with crits and fumbles when I run an RPG session. Critical hits and fumbles have the potential to affect the player characters as well as their adversaries, and as most adversarial encounters are meant to be one and done, critical hits and fumbles carry over detrimentally for the PCs from one encounter to the next.

The way I see it, a referee (or judge) is one that runs a play session with a strict interpretation of the rules, while a game master (or dungeon master) is more concerned about engaging his or her players, but there is certainly overlap between the two, and most that run RPGs have skills that fall into both categories.

When you work for a company or government agency, the larger the organization, the more they treat their employees like cogs. Freelancing is one of the most cog-like work situations one can find themselves in. Your feelings are unimportant. Only how much profit you can make your publisher. I opened up more than I had planned to with this episode, but the truth is, we are all on this journey together. No one is alone, nor should they be.

It's 2021, and I plan on kicking off a new campaign in the first quarter of this new year. While that new campaign will include monthly VTT sessions, I'm also interested in running a group or more through a play by post campaign in the same setting, and possibly moving characters between the two.
