Sick Pets, Wealthy Investors! How to Fix the Veterinary Care Crisis created by Private Equity

Sick Pets, Wealthy Investors! How to Fix the Veterinary Care Crisis created by Private Equity

"I think we don't have enough veterinary professionals. I don't really care what the AVMA is saying that there is not a shortage.

I have, three practices right now that we're trying to staff. We have approximately 17, 18 veterinarians. We could use 25... ...people are leaving the industry and there are a lot of reasons for that... we are losing veterinary professionals. And I think one of the reasons we are losing them is they are becoming disenchanted and disenfranchised by private equity and corporate America. If we could give them a shelter to practice under where they're not asked to sell wellness plans. Don't get me started...Wellness plans were not designed by veterinary professionals, not anybody practicing or not anyone significantly connected and wanting to support the human-animal bond.

That's not how you do it! The human animal bond is in the crosshairs of these folks. It is a target to make money period, the end...

We all need to make money. We are, as veterinarians, severely burdened with student loan debt. We should all make a livable wage. We should be able to pay our loans and buy a house but no one is looking to be a millionaire or get rich when they go into veterinary medicine. Not most of us... I'm an entrepreneur so I'm a little outside of the box, but for the majority of veterinary professionals, we just want to practice our trade and our gift and be a part of supporting a healthy human animal bond and that, in my opinion, if we were allowed to do that, we'd have probably a longer career lifespan than we currently do..." Dr. Cherri Trusheim, DVM

What happens to the pet patients, their owners, and the veterinarians in charge of their care when private equity is managing pet care? With 66 percent of households owning at least one pet and with $136.8 billion of household income being spent on these pets (source 2023-2024 National Pet Owners Survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association), the pet boom has not gone unnoticed by private equity firms. Mars is the biggest pet care consolidator, best known for making candy.

Urban Animal founder Dr. Cherri Trusheim, DVM has observed it is negatively impacting all involved. This trend often detracts from employee culture. Corporatization also diminishes the standard of care by upselling and tying veterinary professionals’ compensation to the amount of products and services they sell. As a solution, Trusheim is introducing the first large-scale worker cooperative model as a solution to give power back to their team of more than 100 employees. and accessible, option-based care.

Worker cooperatives are gaining popularity as a means to establish equitable and sustainable employment, partly fueled by recent legislation in Washington and a growing interest in the model.

The Cooperative Way, a consultancy group specializing in worker cooperative establishment, has collaborated with Urban Animal to inaugurate a cooperative venture. Dr. Cherri Trusheim's contribution of 5% of the company's value has served as the initial seed funding to propel the cooperative's launch.

Adam Schwartz, Founder, The Cooperative Way has noted that “workplace democracy and worker cooperatives are becoming an increasingly attractive option that addresses a variety of the nation’s most common workplace challenges, including labor shortages, corporate culture, pay equity, and succession planning. The model is often formed to lift people out of generational poverty, as lower-income, people of color, and immigrants have founded the majority of worker co-ops in the US.”

Share this episode - If you are a veterinarian or you know a veterinary professional looking to have a better way of treating their patients while having a quality of life and well-being please have them listen to this episode and reach to Dr. Trusheim and Adam Schwartz.

Is Pet Retail the front line of defense for Food Safety? #109

Is Pet Retail the front line of defense for Food Safety? #109

Should Pet Retailers shoulder some responsibility for ensuring product safety and quality with the brands they stock and recommend?

Food safety is critical. Those pet retailers who claim to be in the know and those who give direction and guidance to the pet owners are in fact the gate keepers of that critical space. Do these retailers take their roles seriously enough to look back at the history of a brand, it's owners, it's safety protocols, it problems, it's complaints....?

Are you that retailer that talks big but is ok with a little bit of that 'white lie' for the sake of the sales? or are you the one that will hold brands accountable for their lack of compliance, integrity?

Join me as I speak with Nicole Cammack about the role of the pet retailer in prioritizing safety, protecting consumers and your business.

Your shelves tell your story!!

Killing Me Softly With Your A.G.E.s; Advanced Glycation End Products in Pet Food- Dr. David Turner

Killing Me Softly With Your A.G.E.s; Advanced Glycation End Products in Pet Food- Dr. David Turner

Dr. David P. Turner, a dedicated researcher at the Massey Cancer Center, is passionate about dogs and their well-being.

Specializing in Cancer Prevention and Control research, Dr. Turner focuses on the adverse connections between advanced glycation end products (A.G.E.s) and human health.

A.G.E.s, harmful oxidative compounds prevalent in processed and high-temperature-cooked foods, play a significant role in chronic diseases. In collaboration with his wife, Dr. Victoria Findlay, co-leader of the Cancer Prevention and Control research program, Dr. Turner co-founded the Anti-A.G.E. Foundation, a non-profit organization raising awareness about the health impact of processed foods.

Driven by his extensive research on A.G.E.s' effects on human health, Dr. Turner shifted his focus to canine and feline companions.

With the heavy consumption of processed foods by dogs and cats (by no choice of their own), which are often higher in A.G.E. content than human foods, he decided to investigate the potential harm these foods may cause to our pets’ health and lifespan.

The Purina Affair - Food Safety Expert Phyllis Entis, Delves into Pet Food Consumer Complaints Ep#106

The Purina Affair - Food Safety Expert Phyllis Entis, Delves into Pet Food Consumer Complaints Ep#106

1.15.2024 ....The Purina Affair

Phyllis Entis: I've been a food safety advocate for more years than I care to remember. I have been involved in food safety for half a century. Ever since I got out of school, I've been, one way or another, involved in food safety. Either on the corporate side, or the industry side, or as an advocate and it never seems to get any better.  Which is sad.

Tazz Latifi: Has it gotten worse?

Phyllis Entis: To some extent, I think it has because the industry has continued to grow and the regulatory bodies have continued to shrink.  And so, how do you enforce a speed limit if you don't have enough cops with radar guns?

Tazz Latifi: True, that's where the consumer advocates come in…  to pinpoint these trends.  So that you as the pet owners can have an awareness… to be able to make better choices for your pets and the foods you buy.

If you are feeding Purina or any food that you think may be causing your pets to become sick please use the links below to get more information or to file reports with the FDA:

Critical Seconds: Navigating Pet Emergencies at Home & Your Pet Business

Critical Seconds: Navigating Pet Emergencies at Home & Your Pet Business

You take your pet to doggy daycare or the groomer, or you've hired a dog walker or a pet sitter...are the staff at these facilities equipped to handle any of these potential emergencies? Are you?

Bites and Scratches: Dogs may engage in play that involves nipping, biting, or scratching, leading to minor injuries. While most of these are part of normal play behavior, they can sometimes escalate.

Sprains and Strains, Falls: Running, jumping, and rough play can lead to strains or sprains in dogs, particularly if they are older or have pre-existing conditions.

Overexertion: Dogs, especially those with high energy levels, may overexert themselves during play, leading to exhaustion and related issues.

Fights or Aggressive Interactions: Not all dogs get along, and conflicts can arise, resulting in fights or aggressive encounters.

Pad Abrasions: Running and playing on hard surfaces can cause abrasions to a dog's paw pads.

Foreign Object Ingestion: Dogs may occasionally pick up and swallow small items, toys, or pieces of material during play.

Dehydration: Pets may become dehydrated, especially if they are active and there is insufficient access to water, are fed dry foods, or are stressed due to conditions you may not even be aware of until it becomes emergent.

Stress-Related Issues: Some dogs may experience stress or anxiety in a group setting, leading to various health issues like bloat, seizures, or aggression.

Cuts and Abrasions: Accidental nicks or cuts can happen during the grooming process they use sharp tools such as scissors or clippers.

Clipper Burns: Improper use or overheating of clippers can lead to burns on a pet's skin.

Nail Trimming Accidents: Cutting a pet's nails too short can result in bleeding and pain. Some pets may also resist nail trimming, leading to accidental injuries.

Ear Injuries: Cleaning or plucking the ears can sometimes lead to accidental injuries, especially if the pet moves suddenly.

Eye Irritation or Injury: Grooming products or tools can accidentally come into contact with a pet's eyes, causing irritation or injury.

Allergic Reactions: Some pets may be allergic to grooming products, leading to skin irritation, redness, or itching. Bee stings or spider bites...do you know what to do?

Heat-Related Issues/burns: Improper use of grooming tools, such as dryers, can lead to overheating or burns on a pet's skin. Stepping on a hot manhole cover, metal grates, or hot sand or pavement.

Aggressive Behavior: In some cases, pets may exhibit aggressive behavior during grooming, leading to potential injuries to the groomer or the pet itself.

Pre-existing Health Conditions: Groomers may accidentally exacerbate pre-existing health conditions in pets, especially if they are not aware of the pet's medical history.

How about you? Are you prepared to handle emergencies, like choking, a snake bite, an allergic reaction from a bee sting, cardiac arrest, smoke inhalation, or consumption of something poisonous???? Do you think you know what to do? Do you think your groomers or pet care facilities are equipped with the knowledge to handle emergencies....?

Bertha Villanueva-Shertzer, The Pet Medic and Aloha Dog Mom, talks about Pet emergencies in episode # 105. This may be one of the most important episodes you listen to.

Please share this episode!!! Thank you.

Unmasking Canine Corruption: Exposing the Politics & Dirty Money of the Pet Industry

Unmasking Canine Corruption: Exposing the Politics & Dirty Money of the Pet Industry

Here are 2 quick and tame excerpts from this eye-opening conversation with JP Goodwin, Senior Director of HSUS Stop Puppy Mill Campaign, and Liz Menegon, Founder of Hands2Paws.

John: ... one year ago, there was a major push by some people in the pet industry to say that there was a dog shortage. Do you remember that?"

Tazz: Ohhh I saw those articles. I was livid.

John: They wanted to drive people towards more of the commercial breeding side of the industry for acquiring dogs and cats...it's kind of funny. I spoke with one of the people who was a big driver of that messaging for that pet shortage messaging. and this was just last year and he said..."

Tazz: No, the greenwashing of the pet industry is just unbelievable with foods, with products, with supplements, and with animal welfare. It's just nonstop. It's frustrating. I am scared sometimes.

John: But there's good people in the industry, too...

Most of the retailers don't sell puppies. Many of them endorse efforts to stop the sale of puppies in pet stores.

Want to know what you can do to be a part of the solution? Listen to & share this episode with anyone who has a pet or is looking to bring one into their lives and then send them to the shelters and while you're at it have them get pet insurance...the cost of health care for these animals is skyrocketing making the cost to care for them unaffordable.

Toxic - Pet Food is a Risky Business - Phyllis Entis, MSc - Ep# 101

Toxic - Pet Food is a Risky Business - Phyllis Entis, MSc - Ep# 101

What is the reason behind pet food manufacturers being able to evade accountability in many instances where their products have caused harm and even fatalities? Is there adequate oversight provided by regulatory bodies designed to monitor the food system or are they facing limitations that hinder them from effectively carrying out their responsibilities?

If you are in the pet industry or a pet owner, you owe it to yourself, your pets, and your customers to read this book.

With the 2023 release of TOXIC. From Factory to Food Bowl, Pet Food Is a Risky Business, Phyllis Entis has attained her long-standing goal of supplying pet owners with the information they need to understand the issues behind twenty years of pet food recalls and safety alerts.

A graduate of McGill University and the University of Toronto, Phyllis Entis received her introduction to the field of food safety at the hands of Canada’s Health Protection Branch, where she spent the first seven years of her professional life immersed in SalmonellaStaphylococcusE. coli, and other bad actors from the microbial world.

After a long career in the food safety industry, Entis became a freelance consultant and writer. Her first book was published in 2002 by the Food Processors Institute. It was followed five years later by Food Safety: Old Habits, New Perspectives (published by ASM Press). In 2020, she released TAINTED. From Farm Gate to Dinner Plate, Fifty Years of Food Safety Failure.

Pet Industry's Impact on the Environment w/Tanya Hart of Augie Bones Ep#96

Pet Industry's Impact on the Environment w/Tanya Hart of Augie Bones Ep#96

The pet industry has a significant and detrimental impact on the environment. Over the past decade, plastic has been the most commonly used material for pet products ranging from food packaging to pet toys.

Plastic pollution has a range of environmental effects. Plastics release hazardous chemicals into the air, water, and soil. These chemicals can bioaccumulate in the ocean, posing threat to marine life  - it is in the news every day…it takes a long time for plastics to decompose and they can and do remain in the environment for years or even centuries. The plastic then breaks into smaller particles and can block sunlight in the ocean, which in turn has an adverse effect on the food chain. Plastic products, pet products, and non-recyclable or non-compostable packaging typically end up in landfills, further contributing to air and water pollution. Let's learn how the pet industry leaders may be finally coming around a bit...giddy up big boys - you have kept your heads buried in the sand for far too long.

Tanya Hart, the Founder & CEO of Titan Bioplastics & Augie Bones is leading the path by providing the turtle-paced pet company leadership solutions for replacing toxic non-recycled petroleum-based products.

Pet owners and pet retailers can demand quicker and bigger changes from this highly self-serving industry. Pet owners and pet retailers can take steps to reduce their plastic consumption and adjust their buying habits to purchasing and using non-toxic, sustainable pet products. Look for reusable containers, pet toys, and pet accessories that are made of natural, eco-friendly materials - speak loudly with your $'s.

UNDERSTANDING FELINES with AI & TABLY - EP#92

Using the Tably app, a photo of your cat says a thousand words - or maybe just a few - helping your cat tell you whether they’re having a good day or a bad one. Tably’s highly accurate AI model assesses a photo against validated veterinary pain scales. The model has assessed hundreds of thousands of photos with over 90% precision. It utilizes proprietary machine learning algorithms to empower cat parents to make informed decisions about their cat’s health. Tably employs a number of artificial intelligence processes: object detection, image suitability detection, object extraction, image categorization, and result analysis. To minimize errors, we have configured our algorithm to validate the presence of a feline face in the image before sending it to the AI model for further analysis. Tably is the first product created by Sylvester.ai, a company that creates predictive healthcare products powered by artificial intelligence to improve animal health outcomes across species. Sylvester.ai believes animals can live healthier, longer lives when humans can be more proactive in their care.

Bonus Episode #91 with Richard Reynolds

Check out this bonus episode and make sure you share the @hands2paws app with anyone looking to bring a dog or cat into their lives - They will be matched with the right pet for their life and will be directed to shelters and the breeders that are NOT puppy mills or the toxic backyard breeders that are causing disease and devastation for so many animals and their unknowing buyers.

Please choose to ADOPT - The shelters are full of pure and mixed breeds that were displaced because, for many, their previous owners chose to NOT educate themselves, chose to buy impulsively, and did not think about the welfare of the animals.

Scaling a Woman Owned Pet Brand - Episode 89

Scaling a Woman Owned Pet Brand - Episode 89

Did you know that the majority of female-run and owned businesses are under the moniker of "Small Business"  (fewer than 500 employees)?

I often wonder why we choose to remain small - I understand starting small but remaining small is something I was questioning after my conversation with Cindy Dunston Quirk, founder of Scout & Zoe's.

The conversation also took me back to 2011 when I wanted to invest in a home-cooked pet food brand that had just launched 2 years prior - The 2 woman owners were so freaky, frightened, and protective of the two products that they continuously got in their own way during the investment and partnership conversations... At that time I thought they were so ahead of the pet industry's thinking pattern about food that if they got investments, the right partnership and mentoring, and included a cat food in their line of products there could be very profitable magic....but their need to control and be right was too overpowering for the duos' growth and for my sense of self so I threw my hands up and wished them luck.  They are still a small...small business and the home-cooked sector in pet food is growing like wildfire with more junk than quality.  So as a woman and a business owner and consultant in the pet sector I am going to scream at the top of my lungs and tell women to give up the need to be in control and perfect. Get rid of the riff-raff in your workplace and your mind- you don't need other people's drama, get out of your own way and ask for help.  This world is full of opportunities and if you are a creator and a do-er it's time to start kicking ass and taking names. You got it.

Is the USDA, AKC & The Pet Industry Lobby Perpetuating the Tragic Reality of Puppy Mills? EP#88

Is the USDA, AKC & The Pet Industry Lobby Perpetuating the Tragic Reality of Puppy Mills? EP#88

In this episode, we delve deeply into what CAN BE DONE to eliminate these death facilities and how you can reach out to your state representatives and Pet industry lobby group executives at the Pet Advocacy Network and demand that they start doing what they CLAIM they are doing...These backyard breeders and puppy mills are disease-carrying toxic grounds and they are pumping out SICK animals from sick animals - THEY need to be shut down and the REAL breeders who breed for health and breed integrity and our animal shelter facilities and workers need the support NOT the criminal puppy mills. WHY is the Pet Advocacy network choosing its current path of supporting the disease-ridden puppy and kitten factories?  I would love to have a member of PAN (formerly PIJAC) delve into how we can come together to eliminate the bad apples (You can find them on the HSUS Horrible 100 - MANY are repeat offenders that the USDA has allowed to continue operating).

Below is one of the Hands2Paws blog posts about the USDA.

In the United States, there are an estimated 10,000 commercial dog breeding operations, also known as puppy mills. A United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) license is required for any breeder who sells wholesale to pet stores or brokers, but not for breeders who sell directly to the public. This means that thousands of puppy mill operators are not subject to any federal oversight or regulation.

As a result, these breeding facilities can get away with appalling conditions, such as dogs being kept in small cages with no room to exercise, unsanitary conditions, minimal veterinary care, and little to no socialization. The dogs in these mills are often sick and passed along to unsuspecting consumers who paid top dollar for a healthy pet.

Ethical Issues Associated with the U.S. Department of Agriculture The U.S. Department of Agriculture has the power to make a difference for these animals by holding all commercial breeders accountable and inspected, regardless of how they sell their puppies. But instead, the agency has chosen to turn a blind eye to this growing problem.

The USDA’s current system is failing both puppies and their consumers. By only inspecting kennels that sell wholesale to pet stores or brokers, the agency is effectively giving a pass to thousands of puppy mill operators who sell directly to the public. As a result, these breeding facilities can get away with appalling conditions, such as dogs being kept in small cages with no room to exercise, unsanitary conditions, minimal veterinary care, and little to no socialization.

Not only does this cause immense suffering for the dogs involved, but it also dupes unsuspecting consumers who paid top dollar for a healthy pet. The USDA has the power to make a difference for these animals by holding all commercial breeders accountable and inspected—but instead, the agency has chosen to turn a blind eye to this growing problem.

USDA Turns a Blind Eye

It’s time for the USDA to do better for both puppies and their consumers. The agency has the power to make a difference for these animals by holding all commercial breeders accountable and inspected—but instead, the agency has chosen to turn a blind eye to this growing problem. If you care about animal welfare, please contact your representatives and demand that they hold the USDA accountable for its failures. Together, we can make a difference for these innocent creatures who deserve better lives.

Whiskers Holistic Pet Retail Founder Randy Klein - E#83

Whiskers Holistic Pet Retail Founder Randy Klein - E#83

Walking into Whiskers Holistic Pet store in 1992 transformed my understanding of pet food and eventually (2005) my career trajectory.

I had no preconceived notions of what was good or bad in pet food - there was NO internet - no NOISE from brands and bloggers and influencers.  It was me, a type 1 diabetic who understood the impact of food on EVERY aspect of my life, and my ex-husband who as a singer, claimed that everything he consumed impacted the condition of his voice so bringing home a pet from the shelter and having been handed a bag of Iams kibble seemed a bit odd to me - I didn't understand how an obligate carnivore could digest and be 'ok' eating cereal (I added chicken broth to the kibble the first week because I really thought it was meant to be moistened and made into mush - I very quickly switched to Pet Guard and Halo canned food - Remember those brands?;)

I am grateful to Randy & Phil Klein for being innovators in the field of holistic pet nutrition and retail.

As they continue to help thousands of pet owners/pet parents with education and guidance every single day, we, pet owners, distributors,   and brands should support Whiskers so that they continue on this amazing path. NYC and its boroughs are full of stores but very few, can compete with the knowledge and support Randy & Phil have brought to pet owners...

Getting To Sustainability w/ Lab Grown Meat Versus Pet Industry Greenwashing #82

Getting To Sustainability w/ Lab Grown Meat Versus Pet Industry Greenwashing #82

A few updates: 1st meeting of The Indy Pet Community Advisory Group (NO THERE IS NO WEBSITE for a reason;)  is going to take place in late September. If you are going to Super Zoo and want to find out about the Indy Pet Community Advisory group (or my new line of Catazztic Cat treats) send me a note and let's connect and make sure you are subscribed to THE PETROPOLIST PODCAST because you will want to get a reminder when my next episode (#83) is out - My guest will be with Randy Klein, CEO of Whiskers holistic pet store in NYC which has been around since before some of you were even a speck in your parents' eyes.

We all know how talented the pet food sector is when it comes to making shit up to create the perception of being do-gooders or creating a "new & improved pet industry sustainable model" without really doing much different than they have been doing for the last 20 to 40 years. As a collective, pet food manufacturers have created layers to insulate their bad behavior, like new organizations that make it seem like they're recycling the big bad unrecyclable kibble bags or that they need to be applauded for their efforts in being sustainable through the use of peanut shells as a source of fiber or their use of dead or diseased animals that suffered and didn't quite make it off the crammed truck to their proper slaughter session...yeah a little bit of greenwashing takes those big brands a long way financially and perhaps we shouldn't forget that they science the shit out of it all. These very companies are incredibly active in pursuing, learning, and making investments in companies and products that are innovative and may one day be their competition or their goldmine.

This episode is kinda sorta about asking ourselves the question:  How do we feed our pets without harming the environment and other animals?  Are lab-grown meats the answer or will The Big AG Bullies and Lobbies continue to work their magic and keep Americans in the Dark using their might with political and media influence? Check out Nancy F. Huehnergarth's article I linked here.

My guest today is SCIENTIST, Shannon Falconer

Shannon holds a Master's degree in Biochemistry, a Ph.D. in Chemical Biology, and worked as a post-doctoral research fellow at Stanford University prior to co-founding Because Animals in 2016

Will the answer to these problems be Because, Animals.? god I hope so!!!

Hissy Fit - It's not the cat's meow with Dr. Rachel Geller Ep#81

Hissy Fit - It's not the cat's meow with Dr. Rachel Geller Ep#81

Cat University is back on The Petropolist Podcast!!!!
"Cats don't purposely misbehave. They don't think of right and wrong the way we do. The cat is trying to solve the problem as a cat..."
If we were only as smart as cats.
Here we are again addressing cat behavior with Dr. Rachel Geller. In this episode of Cat University, the conversation is all about war! Which cat is instigating the battle and which cat is in defense mode. Listen and learn, I certainly learned a whole lot during this session.
As always, thank you to Dr. Rachel Geller for reminding us that our cats are not at all like us and that we need to recognize their instinctual feline needs and behaviors which are very different than the way the media likes to represent and try to humanize them.

Small Batch Pet Food Founders Diana & David Vogel - EP#79

We recorded this episode about 3 months ago - At the time I was doing consulting for a multi-location pet business in NYC  and there was less than a handful of stores in the NY area that carried Small Batch Pet. It is incredible how disconnected many pet store owners are from the needs of their clients and how to communicate with them.  The conversation with David & Diana Vogel and my experience in the industry over the last 20 years all were inspirations for one of my current heart & soul projects...And please clear your mind of all of the stupid thoughts about 'agendas' or wherever your fear-based thinking is taking you about why I am doing this...

EP#75 - Cats and Punishment - Cat University w/Dr. Rachel Geller

Here we are again at Cat University with Feline behaviorist and retainment specialist Dr. Rachel Geller.

What our cats clearly perceive as punishment may not be so obvious to us...Listen & Learn.

In today's episode, we learn about how the human-cat bond can become severed by actions cat owners take for granted as being minor and even considered 'normal' when disciplining their cats.

You will learn how the use of a popular behavior modification product on the market can in fact lead to your cat eliminating outside of the litter box which is one of the main reasons why cats are dumped/abandoned or given up for adoption.

You will learn why your sweet ways of showing affection and love feel very different for your cat than they do for you. The cat parents' actions may be the cause of anxiety and distrust instead of love and trust...

EP#73 - Jim Scott, Pet Industry Legend - Truth about Kibble

EP#73 - Jim Scott, Pet Industry Legend - Truth about Kibble

I am going to start with, I don't get paid to promote brands nor do I accept payment to feature them on my podcast  - in fact, when I started this podcast I didn't want to discuss brands. Unfortunately, I found that this is absolutely impossible mostly because every day I am asked which brand is best and which brand will help an animal that is unwell become well...it's a tough ask by pet owners mainly because of the amount of banter on the web. The big dollars spent on ads and the big number of brands entering the marketplace because pet food and pet products consistently create big revenue with low upfront investment requirements committed to ingredient quality has made the pet food segment a place of havoc and chaos for the pet owners.  I want pet owners and independent pet retailers to know that there is more out there than what comes up on the first 2 pages of a Google search for BEST pet food.  Where the big brands have the upper hand and power is the money they spend on the advertisements and brand recognition all over the web and the veterinary clinics (a big share owned by pet food manufacturers). These foods being advertised have been consistently the foods that cause all of my clients to be clients !!!

The advertising dollars pushing the unsubstantiated claims won't get any of our pets eating quality products but will lead the masses into thinking whatever the brands want them to think  - my purpose with my food episodes is to introduce and open up the conversation about those brands that commit to bringing quality and some sort of moral code to a very unregulated and ethically devoid industry.

EP#72 - Entrepreneurship, Franchising, Happy Cats = Chris Raimo

EP#72 - Entrepreneurship, Franchising, Happy Cats = Chris Raimo

Remember that movie Field of Dreams? The one where that voice keeps saying
"If you build it, they will come..."

Well, that's sort of what founders Chris and Meg Raimo felt was happening to them shortly before they conceived the idea for the Happy Cat Hotel & Spa. The couple had owned and operated their original business venture, Home Sweet Home Pet Care, a house-call pet care service that provided dog walking, pet sitting when they heard that voice whisper to them.  At that time it was widely accepted that it was better to leave your pets home than to put them in a kennel - especially cats. When it came to visiting those same cats, however, Chris, Meg, and their team began to notice that their feline friends were not doing so well. Cats that were typically withdrawn or aloof began pining for affection while others would regress and develop a stir-crazy mentality that would bring about fits of destruction, urinating, and hunger strikes.

Entrepreneurs that they are, Chris and Meg started asking questions. What does it matter that a cat is at home in its 'normal' environment, if the home is barren of contact and socialization? What does the place matter to a truly social creature?

From there, the founders started answering the questions and developing a solution. What if the cat didn't stay home but went instead to a place that provided enrichment all day long? Would they adapt?    Behavioral research shows they will. Give them places to climb, hide, run, and rest, offer them physical touch and affection, as well as interactive replications of play and hunting, and they, will not only adapt but THRIVE. In other words, create a place just for cats.

Check out the Happy Cat Hotel

EP#71 - 'Til Death Do Us Part

EP#71 - 'Til Death Do Us Part

Til Death do us part...for me, this is where I think, God, I hope a long life and an easy pain free death is the only thing in life that will separate me from my pets. I am not alone in feeling the value and importance of the human animal bond. So often, the death of a pet is just not acknowledged the same way a loss of a human would be.

As pet owners, pet parents, animal lover... however you choose to identify your relationship with your pet  - I would bet that you have felt the disconnect from people that just didn't understand the relationship you shared with the pets in your life.

Who knew there are people out there called Pet chaplains that can help when you are grieving the loss of a pet. I hope this episode helps you or someone you care about get through a difficult time with just a little more ease and knowing that we don't need to be alone or ashamed of the way we feel. Ask for help - there are lots of us that understand. Love, Tazz.

EP# 67 - What is the BEST Dog Training Method - Billie Groom UPwardDogology

What is Canine Cognitive Behavior Therapy ? Listen to Episode 67 to find out what it is as I annoy the hell out of my dear calm guest, Bille Groom with questions that get the listener to the core of what this type of training is all about.

Billie Groom is an expert in Canine Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. She works exclusively with dogs over the age of six months because this is when cognitive skills develop causing change in behaviors. This is an unheard of area of expertise because there is no other formula grounded in C.B.T. that effectively addresses behaviors associated with aggression, anxiety, rescued dogs, adolescent dogs and change in behaviors. For more information about this method of dog training please go to Upward Dogology

EP#65 - Is your Pet Food Safe - Pet Food Safety Series #2 w/ David Primrose

EP#65 - Is your Pet Food Safe - Pet Food Safety Series #2 w/ David Primrose

Do you know if your pet food is safe? What happened in 2007 with food fraud and the economically motivated adulteration of pet food that killed 4000 pets can happen again...What can each of us do to mitigate the risks and the vulnerability associated with food fraud and risky food practices.

David Primrose - Expert in pet food safety discusses where we have the opportunity to create change in food safety.

Here are a few important take-aways from the episode:

Traceability study...ask your pet food brand to provide this information for your specific batch of pet food and see what they tell you. Do they have this data? if not, then be wary.

When it comes to Salmonella is a zero tolerance policy for salmonella realistic, especially with the large number of raw foods in the commercial pet food sector?  David delves into this question.

David is adamant that HACCP needs to be applied to the pet food supply chain and with that  a greater sharing of data between all manufacturers in order for brands and manufacturers to create a state of prevention as opposed to constantly being in a reactive response mode.

Education of all stakeholders in the pet food supply chain including the pet owners is incredibly important - in general we need more transparency and the pet owner needs to show a high standard of hygiene from feeding to cleaning up/picking up feces... Listen & learn

In this episode I speak with Barbara Phillips service dog trainer specializing in diabetic alert dogs.   I wanted to shine a light on Diabetic Alert Dogs as well as the misinformation about service dog certifications and how the use of 'fake' certifications cause harm for the people with real disabilities that need service dogs to help get them through each day.
