Book Description:
The first of its kind, this book chronicles and contextualizes the underexplored history of African American memory at TCU. It focuses specifically on the understudied role of Black Americans within TCU lore from many perspectives: students, staff, faculty, administrators, and alumni. TCU in Purple, White, and Black explores the academic, athletic, artistic, and cultural impact of a group of people that was not formally included in the university for nearly the first century of its existence and is an honest look at the history of segregation, integration, and inclusion of Black Americans at TCU. Anyone interested in race relations, the function of memory, and North Texas history will find the text and its layered analytical approach appealing.

With this episode Dr. G and Marcellis are joined with colleague Dr. Sylviane Greensword to discus their newly released book A History To Remember: TCU Purple, White, & Black. Together, they talk about the writing process, how the idea to collab on a book came about, their hopes for the future, and what will come next. Episode S3.12 HIStory Ft. Frederick Rouse III
This week Dr. G and Marcellis return to the community to invite a very important voice and story to the platform. The grandson of Mr. Fred Rouse talks on the lynching of his grandfather and how he plans to continue telling the story of tragedy and triumph. Many of these stories regarding our ancestors get left out and unnoticed that truly shape our lived realities. Mr. Fred Rouse is currently the only person reported to be lynched in Fort Worth and Tarrant County Texas. It is thru the work of the Equal Justice Initiative based in Montgomery, AL https://eji.org/ that Mr. Frederick Rouse III was able to learn about his grandfather, Fred Rouse. In front of a welcoming audience at the Van Cliburn Concert Hall on the campus of Texas Christian University, our host Dr. G and Marcellis record their very first Live episode of Reconcile This! with Professor Rhonda Magee
As a prominent scholar in the field, Magee has explored the healing power of mindfulness, especially for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Magee is a Professor of Law at the University of San Fransisco where she is integrating mindfulness into law, social work, and higher education. She is a Fellow at the Mind and Life Institute and serves as a mentor for a number of contemplative organizations, including the Holistic Life Foundation, Mindfulness in Law Society, and the Brown Center for Mindfulness. Magee is also the author of The Inner Work of Racial Justice: Healing Ourselves and Transforming Our Communities through Mindfulness. This interview explores Magee's journey into mindfulness and healing offers to ask "What is Well being ?" in an introspective way that pushes us forward towards A Beautiful Revolution.

TCU medical student Toni Igbokidi joins our host to speak on the power of the barbershop as a place for release and restore for black men. Studying to become a psychiatrist, Igbokidi is becoming a bright light in the Fort Worth community through a strategic partnership to bring the benefits of therapy to the comfort of the barbershop. Episode S3.9: Based on a True Story Ft. Dr. Elizabeth Chew
Coming back to the mic, Dr. G and Marcellis return with a new episode featuring Dr. Elizabeth Chew who serves as the Interim President and CEO at James Madison's Montpelier. Providing an interesting looking into such a historic site, Dr. Chew discusses what it means work with the community to tell protect and provide a storied legacy like none other. "Montpelier is a memorial to the Madisons and the Enslaved Community, a museum of American history, and a center for constitutional education that engages the public with the enduring legacy of James Madison's most powerful idea: government by the people. Through archaeology, architectural restoration, public engagement, and decades of research, Montpelier provides a look into the life of the Madisons and those whom they enslaved. The award-winning exhibition, "The Mere Distinction of Colour" dives into America's continued struggle with Race and Racism and includes reconstructed slave dwellings. Dr. G and Marcellis check back into the studio with another dynamic conversation. Joining from the great state of Virginia and the College of William & Mary, Dr. Jody Allen engages with our co-host on the work being doing with the Lemon Project. Dr. Allen is Robert Francis Engs Director of The Lemon Project for William & Mary. The Lemon Project builds bridges between William & Mary and African American communities through research, programming, and supporting students, faculty, and staff. As a leading institution within this field, Dr. Allen has had the charge of continuing the work of bridging community as well as facilitating healing.

"The Project is named for Lemon, a man who was once enslaved by William & Mary. Though he was, legally, the property of the College, his relationship with the university was complex and often ambiguous. As an enslaved man in Virginia, he owned neither his work nor his own person. But he grew and sold produce to the College, and received a monetary Christmas bonus from the faculty at least once. Even from scant evidence, we can tell that Lemon was an actor on the stage of history, using ingenuity to help mitigate the circumstances of his enslavement"

Episode S3.6 Life and Times Ft. Vice Chancellor Tracy Syler-Jones
With this episode, Dr. G and Marcellis return back to TCU to speak to living history as they interview Vice Chancellor Tracy Syler-Jones. As the vice chancellor of marketing and communication, she serves as the university’s chief marketing and communication strategist. Syler-Jones oversees the development of integrated marketing and communication plans for the university to advance TCU’s brand, visibility, and academic reputation among key audiences. With this episode in particular, our host delve into how planning for TCU's sesquicentennial anniversary has been a great accomplishment, as well as how racial reckoning and transparent truth telling is also a big part of marketing and communication our guest. Episode S3.4 Train of Thought Ft. Dr. Kirt von Daacke
On episode 3.4 Dr. G and Marcellis return with special guest Dr. Kirt von Daacke of UVA. Dr. Van Daacke is the co-chair of the UVA President's Commission on Slavery and the University (PCSU), which published its report in 2018. The PCSU worked on research, acknowledgment, community engagement, and atonement for several years, culminating in the completion of a significant memorial to enslaved laborers that was completed in 2020 and dedicated in spring 2021. The PCUAS continues that process and investigates UVA’s difficult past from 1865 to 1965.
Join us in a conversation that covers Dr. von Daacke's journey into becoming an international scholar and his efforts of maintaining a global research consortium that includes over 80 institutions. The Universities Studying Slavery (USS) has becoming a growing force rooted in collaboration and commitment towards exploring the truth of academia's relationship with slavery, racism, and the Confederacy.

Episode S3.3: Until The End of Time Ft. Dr. James Cash
Dr. G & Marcellis return with an exciting episode featuring Dr. James Cash. The Fort Worth native and I.M Terrell High School graduate who became the 1st Black scholar-athlete to break the color barrier at TCU as well as the Southwestern Conference. After his legendary career at TCU, Dr. Cash would become a trailblazer within a new game, the business world! Serving as the 1st Black tenure professor at Harvard Business School, a member of the Board of Directors for Walmart, Co-owner of the Boston Celtics, and many more other amazing accomplishments.
Gearing up for his return back to Fort Worth and TCU for the unveiling of his statue on TCU's campus on November 12th, Dr. Cash spends time with our co-host giving more insight into his life story and trajectory.
It is an honor to give our living legends their flowers when they can still enjoy them as well as their trophies, so that they they know that their impact will be celebrated... Until The End of Time...

Dr. Greensword is the spearhead behind the Oral History Project and lead researcher of the Charley and Kate Thorp family research project. If you've heard this name before it is because it is no stranger to the RRI scene. Charley and Kate Thorp was a formally enslaved married Black couple who were instrumental in the development of early TCU. Dr. Greensword is back again to talk about the nuances of the Thorp's relationship to the TCU's founder and how what we know of American enslavement is only a small fraction...
With exciting news, Dr. Greensword updates us on her research to share that she has found living descendants of Charley and Kate Thorp who have traveled far and wide to come to TCU for Reconciliation Day to learn more about their ancestors. Episode S2. 5: It Was Written Ft. Dr. Rhondda Thomas (Part 1/2)
On this special episode of Reconcile This! Dr. G and Marcellis take a trip to Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina to meet the trailblazing Dr. Rhondda Thomas and the rest of the research team of the Call My Name, Clemson project. Dr. Thomas is a professor of literature whose work looks into early African American literature and culture, politics of black identity, autobiographical scholarship, African American literature and the Bible, race and culture studies, African American historiography, migration narratives, and African American women writers.
Dr. Thomas documents the Black experience at Clemson through a lens that highlights the fluidity of the past and present. What makes Call My Name, Clemson captivating is that it weaves together significant historical moments and the personal accounts of Dr. Thomas into a cohesive story. A story that sheds light on those who were excluded from the Clemson story, yet were essential in building Clemson into what it is today.

We welcome you to TCU's Race & Reconciliation podcast "Reconcile This!". Whereas host and chair Dr. Frederick Gooding Jr., "Dr. G" & Grad. Assistant Marcellis Perkins give a behind the scenes look into what RRI has been working on. Each episode will include two segments of interviews where the hosts will engage in critical conversation with different TCU & Ft. Worth leaders who dedicate themselves to the work of "Reconciliation". Found within the middle of each episode a "Doc Talk" intermission segment will include the wonderful co-chairs of RRI who will be discussing artifacts, documents and or other interesting facts found within their study.
