Welcome back! Dr. G and Marcellis have been away from the podcast studio, but very well entrenched into the work still. Alongside colleague Dr. Greensword, the trio has been promoting their recent book A History To Remember: TCU Purple, White, and Black. On September 20th, the authors held their official book release and celebration on TCU's campus that featured a star studded program below:

The program included:

  • Leon Reed '01
  • Trustee LaDainian "LT" Tomlinson '00

8 p.m. Book Signing with Closing Jazz Reception lead by Jermone Smith

Book Description:

The first of its kind, this book chronicles and contextualizes the underexplored history of African American memory at TCU. It focuses specifically on the understudied role of Black Americans within TCU lore from many perspectives: students, staff, faculty, administrators, and alumni. TCU in Purple, White, and Black explores the academic, athletic, artistic, and cultural impact of a group of people that was not formally included in the university for nearly the first century of its existence and is an honest look at the history of segregation, integration, and inclusion of Black Americans at TCU. Anyone interested in race relations, the function of memory, and North Texas history will find the text and its layered analytical approach appealing.

Episode S3.8: It Means A Lot Ft. Dr. Jody Allen

Dr. G and Marcellis check back into the studio with another dynamic conversation. Joining from the great state of Virginia and the College of William & Mary, Dr. Jody Allen engages with our co-host on the work being doing with the Lemon Project. Dr. Allen is Robert Francis Engs Director of The Lemon Project for William & Mary.  The Lemon Project builds bridges between William & Mary and African American communities through research, programming, and supporting students, faculty, and staff. As a leading institution within this field, Dr. Allen has had the charge of continuing the work of bridging community as well as facilitating healing.

For more information on the Lemon Project. Click the Link below!

"The Project is named for Lemon, a man who was once enslaved by William & Mary. Though he was, legally, the property of the College, his relationship with the university was complex and often ambiguous. As an enslaved man in Virginia, he owned neither his work nor his own person. But he grew and sold produce to the College, and received a monetary Christmas bonus from the faculty at least once. Even from scant evidence, we can tell that Lemon was an actor on the stage of history, using ingenuity to help mitigate the circumstances of his enslavement"

Dr. G and Marcellis follow up on last episode's "People Hear What They See" with having the insightful wisdom of their esteemed guest, a nationally recognized speaker, and church leader Dr. Jay Augustine to further explore the idea of Reconciliation.  A New Orleans native, Jonathan C. Augustine (a/k/a “Jay Augustine”) is a pastor and professor, as well as an author and advocate. He is part of a group of national social justice leaders who speak for the equality of all human beings, while advocating for policies of diversity, inclusion, and belonging. With the release of his new and highly anticipated book entitled Called to Reconciliation: How the Church Can Model Justice, Diversity and Inclusion, Dr. Augustine offers an added layer to how the work can be facilitated and shared. This book argues that the church's work in reconciliation can serve as a model for society at large and that secular diversity and inclusion practices can benefit the church. It offers a prophetic call to pastors, church leaders, and students to recover reconciliation as the heart of the church's message to a divided world.
