Te Whē S2 E2 - The Future of Auckland Pride

Te Whē S2 E2 - The Future of Auckland Pride

In this episode of the Te Whē, our host Hāmi is joined by the newly appointed Executive Director of Auckland Pride, Julia Croft, and Nathan Joe, Creative Director of Auckland Pride.

Julia, a celebrated performance artist, reflects on her journey from studying acting to breaking the mould in her live performance personal work, which led to creating F.O.L.A (Festival of Live Art) with her bestie Nisha Madhan. She emphasises the importance of providing support and resources for independent artists and creating a context that values experimental art.

Nathan, a masterful playwright and spoken word artist, shares his creative inspirations and reflects on this year's first Pride Elevates programming.

Julia and Nathan express their excitement about their desire to bring a creative approach to shaping Auckland Pride. They discuss the fluidity of roles within the organisation and their intention to build a community that nurtures and uplifts artists. They also highlight the importance of social practice and participatory art in connecting with the zeitgeist and promoting equity. The threesome envisions a future for Auckland Pride that disrupts traditional structures, embraces diversity, and creates a decentralised and organic festival experience - perhaps one that resembles a jellyfish or a forest-like digital ecosystem (we get lost in colourful analogies). They emphasise the power of art and culture in activating the community and providing platforms to come together and celebrate being queer.

Listen to the podcast for an intimate look into the creative process behind this event with the producer, and Creative Director of Auckland Pride, Nathan Joe and one half of the curation team, and host of Te Whē, Hāmiora Bailey.

Under the radiant light of Matariki, six talented Māori creatives will embody mihimihi and breathe life into the profound work and words of Ani Mikaere as mokopuna. Through whakatauāki and citational practices, they will take you on a transformative journey. Don't miss this extraordinary one-night-only performance, book your tickets now!

In his preface for 'Colonising Myths - Māori Realities: He Rukuruku Whakaaro,' Moana Jackson beautifully employs Nanny Bub Bridger's poetic masterpiece, 'To Dance With Words,' to honour Ani Mikaere's generational genius. Through this gesture, he showcases the essence of mana-hononga-tangata, a practice that some believe is often overshadowed by the capitalistic and competitive aesthetics of contemporary Toi Māori.

Join us on this extraordinary journey as we celebrate Matariki and the power of artistic expression in this special Matariki season premiere of Te Whē ✨

Te Whē S1 E7 - Bonus Ep with Ramon Te Wake & Hāmiora Bailey

Te Whē S1 E7 - Bonus Ep with Ramon Te Wake & Hāmiora Bailey

We’ve been reflecting on the importance of Whakapapa while sitting with this special bonus episode of our Te Whē podcast. Takatāpui elders have left a legacy of excellence and pride from the very first gay liberation protest - these change makers and visionaries worked informed by the efforts of our shared elders, and blazed the trail for us to create our own pride.

In this bonus episode of Te Whē we talk to Ramon Te Wake, a mokopuna of movements and a tuakana for the queer arts. We discuss Ramon’s legacy, her interdisciplinary practice and illustrious career, the importance of understanding our tuakiri and protecting ourselves with toolkits, and the joy that is being in relationship with our forebears.

Ramon has been a dancer, a singer, a show host on “Takatāpui” by Māori Television (2004) and an aclaimed director. without her efforts in championing and recording our collective history Te Tīmatanga would not have been able to exist. To use her own analogy of the future of Queer Arts, if Ramon is on the train we’re never getting off.

Te Whē S1 E4 - Ki Nga Tangata with Meghan Collins, Elyssia Wilson-Heti & Hāmiora Bailey

This episode is essential listening for pākehā working in pākehā organisations. It's a beautiful kōrero led by our Kaiwhakahaere Takatāpui Hāmiora Bailey with two wāhine toa, Meghan Collins (Rainbow Youth) and Elyssia Wilson-Heti (Auckland Pride, FAFSWAG) that encourages people to get uncomfortable and challenge colonial institutions and practises. There is so much juciness in this episode about the real benefits of coalition and sharing resources to support dreams.
