7 CREATIVE TOOLS That I'm Using with My ELEMENTARY DESIGN STUDENTS

7 CREATIVE TOOLS That I'm Using with My ELEMENTARY DESIGN STUDENTS

It’s a thrill to get into creative design with elementary learners.

Students at this age are fearless. They’re curious. They’re ready to create anything. And they’re ready to expand their creative powers.

If you’re teaching in similar spaces, here is a list of tools, design challenges, and creative tasks that I’ve tried and recommend (I have no affiliation with any of these brands, products, or sites).

This ONE THING Will DESTROY Your CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

This ONE THING Will DESTROY Your CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

I will never forget one of my high school science teachers.

He was a good man. A decent person. His instructional practices weren’t exactly progressive, but he meant well.

The biggest problem for him was that he had a very short fuse.

Get under his skin, and things could really unravel. He would raise his voice. His skin would start changing colors. He would throw chalk at students. He would smash his speaking podium on the floor.

17 Powerful Quotes from Essential Truths for Teachers

17 Powerful Quotes from Essential Truths for Teachers

When it comes to names I trust in education, Danny Steele and Todd Whitaker are near the top of that list.

They love people. They’re passionate about learning. They’re bold and don’t hesitate to tell it like it is.

Essential Truths for Teachers isn’t a book about instructional practice. It’s not about classroom management techniques, the best uses of technology, or assessment.

This book is more of a manifesto. It’s about the fundamental beliefs and values that teachers need to own in order to be successful.

It’s a quick and easy read. I have no affiliation and gain nothing from sales of this book, but I highly recommend it.

What follows are 17 essential truths that every teacher in the world should hear.

How Do YOU DISPLAY Your STUDENT LEARNING? Reviewing the Top Posts on Education X from the Week

How Do YOU DISPLAY Your STUDENT LEARNING? Reviewing the Top Posts on Education X from the Week

Welcome to the last edition of Saturday Morning Teacher Talk for 2023 and the indefinite future. I’ve enjoyed doing these mini-episodes but will be changing up my content format in 2024.

Education X Posts Featured in This Episode:

Teacher2Teacher asks: How do we let our students know their work is amazing? Joelie McCrary urges teachers to display student learning as much as possible.

Tony Vincent shares a fun Friday entry: Quick Draw (found at quickdraw.withgoogle.com). Sketch a given word and see if the AI can guess your word based on your drawing.

Tyler Rablin observes that students are more willing to take risks in their writing pieces or project designs when we de-emphasize grading.

Trevor MacKenzie promises that co-designing learning experiences with and for students can be powerful stuff if only we can embrace our vulnerabilities and check our egos at the door.

Pav Wander says that keeping a space at the back of her classroom for alternate seating has been very freeing and comfortable for her students (with picture).

Stephanie Barrientos asks how we can better support student learning needs without burning out teachers.

Susan Jachymiak says that sometimes teachers just need a reminder that we are all doing our best and we are doing enough.

Tyler Rablin points out that when students use AI to complete an assignment, they are manifesting the belief that good grades are the ultimate goal - not learning.

I sign off and thank my faithful viewers and listeners for tuning into this show throughout 2023. These weekly editions of Saturday Morning Teacher Talk will not continue in 2024, but you'll hear from me on the Teachers on Fire podcast interviews which will continue to air here.

When it comes to AI tools in the classroom, Chey Cheney talks about modelling, demonstrating, being purposeful, transparent, and open.

Kyle Niemis from Quizizz encourages teachers to consider installing the Quizizz Chrome extension, which makes YouTube-to-quiz even faster and easier than it was.

What's the best way to motivate more student learning? Natalie Vardabasso points us to authentic audience.

Katie White shares a reproducible framework for student goal-setting that includes My Goal, Materials and Resources, Prior Knowledge and Skills, and Action Steps.

Trevor MacKenzie encourages teachers to stick with the cultures of student self-reflection, feedback, and revision that we are building in our classrooms.

Teacher 2 Teacher shares three daily formative questions that teachers can ask themselves about their own practice (credit: Donita Hicks).

Roy Smith asks us NOT to tell our students "You should know this already."

Zoe Branigan-Pipe sings the praises of a retired principal who left a positive impact on his community.

Julie Ann puts a positive spin on things, expressing that although November was "exceptionally brutal," she's looking for a positive momentum shift as she heads into November.

Jay Wamsted comments on a narrative that we're seeing around teacher social media: the idea that admins just keep piling more on teacher plates until they reach the point of burnout.

Emily asks: Do you provide time for students to reflect on their learning after a lesson or unit? If so, what strategies do you use? I look at some responses.

I recall a George Couros suggestion about giving educators time to write and blog about their professional learning.

Susan Jachymiak shouts out the Unsupervised Leadership podcast, so I take a quick look at the work they're doing on their website.

Dr. Josh Kunnath decries the practice of using grades to penalize students for behavior, attendance, or missing assignments. We're no longer assessing learning in those cases.

Natalie Vardabasso encourages educators to use accommodations to uncover student strengths despite deficits.

Jeremy Jorgensen reminds us to integrate student writing into everything we do. If students can write well, they can think well.

Jeremy also points to the power of walking as a reflective act. Walking = medicine.

Chey Cheney points out that students are not robotic rule-following practitioners: we learn, we observe, we implement, refine, and tweak according to the unique needs of our learners and their environment.

The MAGIC and MISERY of STUDENT VIDEO SUBMISSIONS

The MAGIC and MISERY of STUDENT VIDEO SUBMISSIONS

Here's the bitter truth about student video submissions.

They take forever to fully review.

FOREVER.

Some of my dear students sincerely expect me to watch every second of everything they post. Bless their hearts, but I can’t meet that demand and stay sane at the same time.

What are we to do?

Should we just give up and avoid video submissions altogether?

How I'm GETTING My FIRE BACK (When I'm not creating, it's not okay.)

How I'm GETTING My FIRE BACK (When I'm not creating, it's not okay.)

My creative silence is both a symptom and a cause, so finding the time and bandwidth to create again is bringing my fire back this summer.

How are YOU recharging, colleague?

221 - Here's Your Permission to STOP CHASING Missing Student Assignments

221 - Here's Your Permission to STOP CHASING Missing Student Assignments

The reality: not every student has submitted the required products for a particular learning activity by the due date or deadline. What should the responsible teacher do?

Here’s how some teachers respond:

They update checklists of unsubmitted assignments on a weekly or daily basis.

They regularly post names of students whose work is overdue on the classroom whiteboard or digital equivalents. Missing essays: Brian, Jackie, Solomon, Jenny, Stefan.

They meet 1:1 with the students whose work is missing.

They email students or send direct reminders via the LMS.

They set up special study hall sessions (at recess breaks, lunch breaks, or after school) that offending students must attend in order to complete and submit all required assignments.

They email parents to inform them of the specific assignments that their children have not submitted.

These teachers mean well. And some of these measures have their place, at least in spirit.

But it’s also true that this pattern of teacher behavior can become a bottomless pit. All of the tracking and communication I’ve listed here can take huge amounts of time on top of everything else a teacher must do week in and week out.

Welcome to SPARKS: mini-segments intended to spark your thinking and ignite your practice. These short episodes are based on my written reflections, which you can find on the Teachers on Fire Magazine at Medium.com.

220 - When a Middle School Student Goes ON STRIKE: Mapping Next Steps

220 - When a Middle School Student Goes ON STRIKE: Mapping Next Steps

I knew that if we were to improve this student-teacher relationship and get learning back on track, this student would need to feel fully heard by the teacher. And the teacher would need to feel heard by the student. A meeting seemed like a logical next step.

But I wanted to approach this very carefully. I wanted to think about ways to allow the student to feel heard without creating a slam session against the teacher. And I wanted to allow the teacher to feel heard by the student without them feeling collectively dumped on. So I worked with my principal to craft a professional first: a mediation agenda.

Dale Carnegie once said that “A person’s name is to that person, the sweetest, most important sound in any language.”

214 - It’s OKAY to Be MESSY at the START

214 - It’s OKAY to Be MESSY at the START

Guess what, administrators. If you want your educators to teach responsively, dynamically, and sustainably, then you’ve got to create safe spaces for experimentation.

That means that it has to be okay for teachers to try some new things. To leave the familiar from time to time. To make spontaneous decisions. And to make mistakes.

That means that it has to be okay for you as an administrator to walk into a classroom where the lesson plan hasn’t been completely defined. Where the learning activity has yet to appear in a unit plan. Where the teacher asks students to try out new technologies that don’t work exactly as intended.

That has to be okay with you. Because if it’s not — if every instructional decision has to be planned, defined, and described in advance — then experimentation simply won’t happen as often. Or ever.

213 - The OVERLOOKED SKILL That No One Is Talking About in Education

213 - The OVERLOOKED SKILL That No One Is Talking About in Education

Think for a moment.

What if there was a physical skill that could actively determine an adult’s willingness to write virtually anything of length for any reason?

What if this single skill determined whether basic academic tasks required minutes or hours?

And what if proficiency in this same skill dramatically limited or expanded the number of academic options available to students outside of high school?

Wow. That’s huge, right?

If such a skill existed, you would think it would get a LOT of attention in our K-12 education systems.

I believe such a skill does exist.

But it hardly receives a mention.

211 - We Are ALL Developing Learners

211 - We Are ALL Developing Learners

We’re all developing learners. Every last one of us.

As adults, we often have the luxury of walking away from learning that proves difficult or doesn’t interest us. Students in our current models of K-12 (or at least K-8) don’t usually have that option.

So when we see our kids in the learning pit, let’s not panic or shame.

Instead, let’s engage in thoughtful conversations. Let’s ask helpful questions. And let’s see what we can do to give them a helping hand.

And we’ll celebrate the growth that follows.
