13 - From Self-Taught To Software Engineer: The Ultimate Guide To Landing Your Dream Job In Tech

13 - From Self-Taught To Software Engineer: The Ultimate Guide To Landing Your Dream Job In Tech

What does it look like going from a completely non-technical field to software engineering? In this video, I share my reflections, thoughts, and strategies on what I did and how you can too. In this comprehensive Tech Stack Playbook, I will walk you through some essential steps that I feel are paramount to landing a job in tech, especially that job that's on your vision board. From understanding the latest software and apps to mastering the art of tech interviews and building your brand, I've found it's all about increasing your odds for success and trying to build leverage on your side. But, there is a lot. Doing anything new for the first time can feel exhausting, frustrating, painful, and demoralizing. However, when you make it about the journey, the destination becomes inevitable (with a lot of hard work along the way). I've seen WAY too many of these "get a FAANG/MAANG job in 30 days with XYZ" or "break into big tech with no experience in 2 months." Not only does this type of content set unrealistic expectations to folks excited to enter a new field, but it also gatekeeps real, effective, and proven strategies that could help others. For me, it took 2 years, and over that time, I focused very intentionally on how skills connected to each other, where one piece supported or led to another, and so on. It was always about the journey for me. While it might seem long, and granted the LLMs we have today might cut this time down by a significant margin, I believe it's important to also be long-term focused and not get caught up in what we can do within very short amounts of time. Our long-term achievements are a culmination of our short-term habits, movements, and decisions. In this view, I wanted to lay out some actionable steps you can take to work towards landing that job you've always wanted to get. Instead of cold applying to thousands of companies a month, I share actions you can take every day/week to stack the odds in your favor. I hope you find this video helpful on your tech career journey! ✨ What's in this episode for you: ‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾ 00:00 What You'll Learn 00:10 How to Stand Out in the Tech Job Market 01:20 My Journey from Self-Taught to Software Engineer 02:43 Certifications vs. Job-Ready Skills 04:40 The Modern Tech Stack Skillsets 06:35 Innovative Ways to Apply to a Company 14:00 How to Go About Skills Acquisition 16:00 The 80/20 Rule 18:14 My Build-and-Apply Method to Get Company DMs 19:30 Overcoming Limiting Beliefs & Elevating Your Career ✨ Resources for you: ‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾ 📩 Join my newsletter: https://www.brianhhough.com/signup 👨‍💻 7 Days of Development Ebook: https://www.techstackplaybook.com/resources 🦙 Deploy LLAMA 2 on AWS: https://www.techstackplaybook.com/llama2-build-ai-products?dc=50TSPFan ⭐️ Social Media Toolkit: https://www.techstackplaybook.com/resources 🗓️ Book a Meeting: https://www.techstackplaybook.com/bookme ✨ Let's Connect: ‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾ 📸 Subscribe to my channel: https://www.youtube.com/brianhhough?sub_confirmation=1 📱 Let's stay in touch on Instagram: https://instagram.com/brianhhough 🤝 Connect with me on LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/brianhhough 📫 For business inquiries: https://www.techstackplaybook.com/bookme

11 - AWS Just Announced...the Future is Serverless and In the Cloud — re:Invent Day 3

11 - AWS Just Announced...the Future is Serverless and In the Cloud — re:Invent Day 3

In this episode of the Tech Stack Playbook, I'll be sharing more about AWS re:Invent - the year's largest global tech conference that brings together leaders, builders, innovators, and creators from cloud, DevOps, serverless, app development, and software engineering from all around the world.

It's Day 3 of AWS re:Invent and there are a ton of announcements! AWS CEO Adam Selipsky delivered the opening keynote and announced a number of exciting updates and announcements, including Amazon Private 5G (imagine building your own 5G network - how cool is that?!)...Amazon SageMaker Canvas for low-code machine learning in the cloud...and a great analysis of what a modern data strategy looks like.

Additionally, I had the opportunity to attend Amazon Leader David Yanacek's workshop on how he builds operational excellence for his teams in an agile way for developers and DevOps engineers at Amazon. The insights he shared were so insightful and really helped to frame up for me how teams can better work together, build together, and collaborate together.

Finally, I go through a theme park app I built at one of the workshops 😊

In this blog post and the blog posts to come this week, my hope is to vlog through the entire week and share all that I'm learning and building with you all so whether you are attending virtually or in person, this AWS re:Invent series on the Tech Stack Playbook will help you gain skills, level up in tech, and boost your software engineering abilities from the sessions I'm attending throughout the conference.

Here’s a glance at what you’ll learn in this episode:

👉 What AWS re:Invent is all about

👉 Key announcements from re:Invent

👉 What I'll be learning about and building this week

It's going to be a major week for cloud and tech in general, so I am so excited to bring you along for the ride.

7 - How to Get Started with Low-Code / No-Code with Wilián Iralzabal (Zabal Media)

Wondering what Low-Code / No-Code is and want to learn more? 👨‍💻💭

In this episode of the Tech Stack Playbook, I sit down with Wilián Iralzabal (https://instagram.com/wilian_iralzabal), founder of Zabal Media, the creator of One Minute Designer, and a former Product Designer at Google. We had an awesome conversation this afternoon about all things entrepreneurship, design, tech trends, and low-code / no-code.

Here's what we cover:

1.) Going One Minute Designer to Zabal Media, and what fueled Wilian’s passion for building.

2.) As one of the first no-code, strategy, design, and development agencies, what types of work does a designer lead?

3.) Why the low-code market is so hot right now and what is driving it.

4.) Will low-code/no-code eventually replace coders/developers, or is there a space for both?

5.) What made you go all-in on this area of technology?

6.) What a day in the life looks like for a low-code / no-code designer.

7.) With the right mindset, you can ‘art detect’ and then ‘architect’ your life.

8.) We all know about the importance of having a personal brand, so how building a personal brand can be important and helpful over the years.

Have you heard of low-code / no-code? Or are you thinking of building with it one day? 💭

5 - String Theory, Consciousness, and the Gate of Choice for Innovators with Pejman (PJ) Ghadimi — Tech Stack Playbook

5 - String Theory, Consciousness, and the Gate of Choice for Innovators with Pejman (PJ) Ghadimi — Tech Stack Playbook

Have you ever wondered about quantum mechanics, string theory, the multiverse, and how the world’s greatest leaders ascended to the highest versions of themselves? Welcome back to the Tech Stack Playbook, your guide to apps, software, and tech (but in a fun way I promise)...

This week, I got to sit down with entrepreneurial legend, Pejman (PJ) Ghadimi (https://instagram.com/icreatemillionaires), a powerhouse self-made immigrant multi-millionaire entrepreneur, and the best-selling author of Third Circle Theory, Radius, and Gate of Choice. He brings a wealth of knowledge from his 20+ years building businesses that reshape what and how people learn.

If you watched Netflix’s Fastest Cars, you probably saw PJ on Season 2 Episode 1 featured for his extensive luxury car collection. Additionally, he’s the founder and teacher at Exotic Car Hacks (ExoticCarHacks.com), Watch Trading Academy (WatchTradingAcademy.com), and Secret Entourage (https://www.instagram.com/secretentourage).

I've benefited immensely from PJ's teachings and mentorship over the past two years, especially since joining Secret Entourage 2 years ago. Being a startup co-founder now, I'm extremely grateful I read Gate of Choice (GOC) when I did because it was a fully transformational and awakening book into what opportunity, growth, scaling, and success really are about. PJ refers to this concept of the "higher self", beyond the point of self actualization, where you really can create your own reality for others to be in. It gets quite meta when you dissect a lot of these topics, but the the subtitle of the book "a dictionary for the higher human" is the subtitle for a reason. It's highly practical and rich with blueprints, strategies, and guides to help anyone ascend to the highest version of themselves.

If you're currently building something big or want to in the future, GOC is a must read! To get a copy, go here ➡️ https://www.gateofchoice.com

Here’s a glance at what you’ll learn in this episode:

🔹 Multiverse, string theory, and tapping into the building of our own destinies/realities.

🔹 The inspiration for the last book in PJ’s trilogy, Gate of Choice.

🔹 How consciousness and ascending to one’s “higher self” creates new realities and open doors one might think impossible to attain.

🔹 Top strategies for entrepreneurs, builders, and innovators looking to do something big.

🔹 Analyzing whether people like Elon Musk are anomalies or are consciously creating their own realities before our eyes.

4 - Are Hackathons Just for the Pros? — With HackerEarth

Welcome back to the Tech Stack Playbook — your guide to apps, software, and tech (but in a fun way I promise!)

This week, I had an amazing conversation on Instagram LIVE with HackerEarth (https://www.instagram.com/hackerearth), one of the leading online virtual hackathon platforms with a 5+ million developer community and an online learning platform assessing 80+ developer skills. Hackathons have played such an important role in my career, helping me learn new skills at a fast rate, see how to build technology up close, and they continue to be a great way to network, level up skills, and make incredible connections. When HackerEarth reached out to me to do an IG LIVE to answer the question "are hackathons just for the pros?" I of course had to take them up on their offer.

Here’s a glance at what you’ll learn in this episode:

1.) What the real purpose of Hackathons is to me.

2.) Why Hackathons aren't about winning (but something bigger).

3.) What are the 3 language you need for a product-focused Hackathon?

4.) What are the 3 language you need for a proof-of-concept Hackathon?

5.) The greatest lessons I've learned from Hackathons so far (including some funny stories)

This week, I had an amazing conversation on Instagram LIVE with Linda Vivah (https://instagram.com/lindavivah and https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMJpRQjpe), a software engineer from NYC, the founder of Coding Crystals (https://www.instagram.com/codingcrystals), and a fellow AWS Community Builder. • What role creativity has in tech.
  • The path to AWS — why should you get certified?
  • Why is understanding the fundamentals so important?
