Dynatrap battles mosquitoes & more without chemicals
Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear. I’m Fred Fishkin. Tech to help de-bug your deck or patio. Dynatrap is  designed to help you deal with mosquitoes, yellow jackets and other  pesky insects without using chemicals or attracting beneficial insects  like honey bees. Various models are designed for indoors or out and for differing yard sizes…but they all work the same way. Director of Sales and Marketing Julia Wallace… “The Dynatrap mosquito and insect trap creates carbon dioxide. And basically it’s a reaction between UV light and the titanium dioxide coating within the Dynatrap. And that’s what creates that carbon dioxide…attracts mosquitoes and other flying insects to the trap. ” Is it effective? Yes. But the difference isn’t noticeable immediately. It can take several days. But you won’t be spraying poison around. You should know the UV bulbs are designed to be replaced every four months with continuous use.  You can find us at Techstination.com. I’m Fred Fishkin.

Piper updates computer building and coding for kids
Piper updates computer building and coding for kids  Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.   Building a working computer and learning to code with it may sound like a lot for kids as young as seven to take on, but Piper Computer has been making that possible with its fun kits….like the new Piper Computer Kit 2 and a new command center for building a programming a game controller as well.  That’s designed for 13 year olds and up.  We love what they are doing and Piper’s Chief Academic Officer Melissa Belardi says... “We believe that every student should be armed with the skills they need for the 21st century as well as for the automation of the workforce and jobs we don’t even know will exist yet.  And so that’s what we’re trying to do for students.  Ensuring that they are digitally fluent and they have 21st century skills in problem solving, critical thinking and effective collaboration.” The approach at Piper is unique, engaging…and we think…very smart.  Find more at www.playpiper.com. Computer storage is evolving
Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.  Computer storage has been evolving….from traditional hard drives with spinning disks, to solid state drives using SATA connections or SSDs….and now to what are called  PCIe NVME drives.   Kingston Technology will be launching its new A2000 drive this summer and says the company’s David Leong… “NVME uses a little bit more power than SATA and it gives off more heat than SATA SSDs.  So with an A2000, it is single sided, meaning the controller and the chips are all on one side, so it’s super thin, goes up to a terabyte and it’s a little bit slower than its older cousin the KC2000.  It’s perfect for laptops.” And it will still be considerably faster than SATA drives.  What it means for us consumers is more storage in smaller spaces. You can find us at Techstination.com.  I’m Fred Fishkin.

Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.  When it comes to politics…it is easy to get overwhelmed with information and often misinformation.  A Web site called Countable.us aims to cut through much of the clutter …giving users the basic facts about legislation…how their representatives are voting…and provides ways to engage with those representatives and others. COO Paul Stich says it is a bi-partisan platform… “It gives you a way to engage…do you support this..or disagree with it and then leave comments.  And we moderate the comments section very well..so we keep it respectful.  But we also keep it balanced, so we make sure the comments aren’t all focused, directed from the liberals or all from the conservative side.” Kind of an old concept…made new again.  Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.   Some of the first 5G capable mobile devices have been arriving….but in reality…we’re going to have to be patient when it comes to the 5G promise of super fast networking everywhere.  So says Bernard Borghei, co-founder of Vertical Bridge, the largest privately held telecom infrastructure company in the U.S. .. “It is going to take time to deploy a true, stand alone, mobility based 5G network.  We’re looking at at least another five, eight to ten years.  It all depends on how the market responds and how the operators can actually monetize the applications and the services for 5G and therefore how quickly they will continue to invest in it.” Eventually it could replace many wired Internet connections in our homes and businesses too.   Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.  If  you have summer travel plans, the National Cyber Security Alliance is offering some tips on how to stay safer on the road.  Chief Operating Officer Tiffany Schoenike says first on the list…is to do something that should be obvious.  Turn on the find my phone feature on your mobile device… “Because it’s really important so you can disable it and make it basically useless to anybody who might steal it.  Every now and then you might be lucky to have somebody return it, but in case you don’t ..you have apps on there with your financial information,  personal contacts, if they are able to get into your phone.” Which should be password protected by the way.  Also be wary of the kinds of things you use your phone for…avoid financial transactions for instance…while you are on public WiFi networks.  Find more at www.staysafeonline.org. What makes Samsung's Galaxy S10+ a great flagship phone
What makes Samsung's Galaxy S10+ a great flagship phone   Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.  It has been a pretty rough spring for Samsung with issues delaying the release of the Galaxy Fold.  But the company’s S10 line of flagship devices is proving to be a winner.  I’ve been checking out the S10+ and there are a lot of impressive new features.  With a 41 hundred milliamp hour battery…you won’t have to worry about running out of juice in the middle of the day. In fact the Wireless PowerShare feature lets you use the phone as a wireless charger for other phones or Samsung’s Galaxy Buds.  It is noticeably fast…with a Snapdragon 855 processor.  And the camera..that can shoot ultra-wide…and in low light produces great pictures too.  But with the big features…comes a pretty big price tag of about a thousand dollars.  And that, my friend, is for the low end model. You can find us at Techstination.com.  I’m Fred Fishkin.
