Liftid offers neurostimulation for attention & focus without caffeine
Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.  Instead of more caffeine to help make you more alert…RPW Technology says mild electrical stimulation can do the trick.  It makes a device called Liftid that looks like a pair of goggles that you wear for twenty minutes a day on your forehead… “There are two electrodes that are in a specific area on the top of the forehead that deal with cognitive benefit.” Company partner Ken Davidov.  Neurosurgeon Ted Schwartz, also on the team, says the science is real… “In theory if you’re performing a task where you need to be very focused and very alert, by wearing the device twenty minutes a day, may increase and has been shown in these studies to increase, your alertness and your focus and  attention.” I’m typically skeptical…but so far so good…in testing it out. Find more at www.getliftid.com. You can find us at Techstination.com.  I’m Fred Fishkin.

Hands on with Samsung's Galaxy Note 10+
Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.  After spending some time with Samsung’s latest flagship phone, the Galaxy Note 10 plus,  it is clear that the S pen is the key differentiator…and that the new added remote control functions developed for it…make the pen more useful than ever.  And it is great that Samsung is allowing third parties to make use of the S pen too.  On top of that…there’s a huge 6.8 inch vibrant screen…even the word vibrant doesn’t do it justice… powered by a larger battery that can keep you going all day long and there have been some camera improvements, especially on the video side.  I’m not happy that there is no longer a headphone jack, but the ability to expand storage with a microSD card is still there.  As you might expect…all of the high end features here…carry a high end price tag of 11 hundred dollars.  You can often do better keeping an eye out for carrier deals. You can find us at Techstination.com.  I’m Fred Fishkin.

Zipnostic begins testing remote diagnosis & healthcare
Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.   Telemedicine isn’t new, but this is.  A start up called Zipnostic is looking to transform medical housecalls.  It has created a kit that gets brought to a home by a technician….that enables a physician to remotely perform an exam via telemedicine.  They have begun trials in New York City and founder Dr. Gene Ukrainsky says the kit uses a secure connection to the doctor and… “We’re able to take all the vitals.  Temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, actually pulse asymmetry.  We also have a proprietary digital camera that allows us general intra-oral, ear and eye examination.  Also dermatologic examination.” EKGs can be performed as well.  There are plans to expand availability…and you can find more info at www.Zipnostic.com. You can find us at Techstination.com.  I’m Fred Fishkin.

GM-U. of Michigan study finds safety tech reducing crashes
Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.   A new study from General Motors and the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute has found that safety systems like automatic emergency braking and land departure warnings have been preventing many crashes.  That means preventing deaths and injuries as well.  It found, for instance, that the use of forward automatic emergency braking combined with forward collision alert cut rear end striking collisions by 46 percent.  GM Safety Technical Fellow Raymond Kiefer… “For reverse automatic braking we found a very significant reduction in backing crashes, 81 percent.  So the vast majority of those crashes are being avoided with this feature.” And as the technology improves, so will the results.  And in many cases, there is a need for more consumer education …to teach us what the technology can and can’t do.  You can find us at Techstination.com.  I’m Fred Fishkin.

Higher Ground SatPaq making satellite communication affordable
Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.  Higher Ground is a company that is making communication from anywhere…more affordable.  The company’s SatPaq gives you the ability to send and receive text messages through your mobile device when there is no cell phone service available…as long as you have an open view of the sky.  And service costs as little as 55 dollars a year for 150 messages.   Testing while hiking in a remote mountain area made me a believer in the 249 dollar SatPaq.  The messages include your GPS coordinates in the event of emergencies and the app provides weather and medical information as well.  President and Founder Rob Reis… “You buy messages…you don’t pay by the month.  So it’s there when you need it and that’s what you want for safety.” And Reis says there are more capabilities to come.  Find more at www.SatPaq.com You can find us at Techstination.com.  I’m Fred Fishkin

Asus brings innovative ScreenPad to more notebook PCs
Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.  Asus is continuing to innovate in lots of areas.  We’ve been taking a look at one…ScreenPad 2.0 on the latest VivoBook S15,  an elegant notebook popular with students that thankfully features four USB ports along with a micro SD card reader and an HDMI port.  What the ScreenPad adds is lots of flexibility …essentially acting as an on demand roughly 5 and half inch second screen.   You can toggle between traditional touch pad functionality.   Impressive.  Also new this year is the Zen Book Pro Duo with ScreenPad Plus…that extends that second screen across the full width of the notebook…in 4K resolution… “It adds more room for creativity.  You can use a touch pen.” Randall Grilli of Asus.  You can learn more at Asus.com. You can find us at Techstination.com.  I’m Fred Fishkin.

MPOWERD providing tech to assist Hurricane Dorian victims
Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.   MPOWERD is a company that has been making innovative solar lighting and charging products….and it has also been a leader in providing that technology around the world where it is needed most.  And when Hurricane Dorian this month targeted the Bahamas…even before it approached the U.S. shores…MPOWERD jumped in to begin providing relief….encouraging others to join in as well.  MPOWERD’s inflatable solar Luci lanterns were almost immediately on their way.  Founder John Salzinger.. “We don’t have kerosene or anything like that in our lanterns obviously.  So they can go upside down, right side up, it doesn’t matter.  Our lanterns are full waterproof, you never need to replace the battery.  They are maintenance free, no moving parts.  These are the kind of things that when you’re in a disaster you want something durable and something that’s going to work.” You can help too…by heading to MPOWERD.com. Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.  We’ve spoke to lots of tech start ups over the years….but not to many that were launched by 19 year old college students.  Miracle Olatunji is the founder of OpportuniME…a program designed to connect high school students with  opportunities.   She is also Director of Innovation at Thrive, the personal finance incubator at Northeastern University.   And she can add another title to her growing resume’…as the author of a new book… Purpose: How to Live and Lead With Impact… “What I want to do is be able to show people that we all have potential to do amazing things and to make a contribution to the world.  Whether it’s making a contribution in your community, or your school or your workplace.  Or if you want to think bigger, how you can make an impact in the world.” As Miracle obviously does.  Purpose: How to Live and Lead with Impact  is a wonderful, smart read for all ages.  You can find us at Techstination.com.  I’m Fred Fishkin.

T-Mobile offers no strings attached 30 day network Test Drive
Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.   T-Mobile is making a big push to win new mobile customers by giving them an opportunity to use their own phones and devices on the carrier’s network….using a hotspot that includes 600 Mhz service….for thirty days or 30 gigabytes, which ever comes first.  No strings attached…no credit card required.  Sarah Osmer is T-Mobile’s VP for Consumer Post Paid… “So they can test out our network where they live, they can take it to their office, they can even take it where they like to vacation the most and really take our network for a test drive to make sure it works for them before they switch to T-Mobile.” After that period is up…they can pass it on to someone else for a test drive…return it to T-Mobile…or says the company…just stick it in a drawer.  Head to www.T-Mobile.com/testdrive for more. Rakuten Overdrive brings library audiobooks to Apple CarPlay
Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear.  I’m Fred Fishkin.  Overdrive is a company that pioneered the ability of public libraries to provide e-books to readers.  It created the Libby app…and now it is helping to deliver audio books from libraries that can be listened to using Apple CarPlay.  Founder Steve Potash… “Because of the CarPlay integration in Libby, the app appears and is fully accessible through either the touch screen or the voice commands or the navigational features on the steering wheel.  So I could get in the car, instantly continue where I left off with my audio book.” And even automatically pause if a call comes in.  In the U.S., Kindle owners can read library books using the Libby app as well.  Today Overdrive is part of Rakuten. Edoki Montessori Preschool app attracts kids and parents
Techstination, your destination for gadgets and gear. I’m Fred Fishkin.  Getting young children into the back to school learning mode is a little easier with some online help. Edoki Academy’s Montessori Preschool app is designed for three to seven year olds… and the young ones we’ve tested with are instantly engaged. Lessons cover phonics, numbers, colors, shapes…even coding and foreign languages….from Mandarin, Cantonese and Korean…to Spanish, French and German.  Co-founder Valerie Touze says it brings the Montessori experience …perhaps surprisingly…to smartphones and tablets… “They are powerful learning tools and we design apps that are interactive that are there for children to react to and be active in the way they learn.” Parents can try it for free for seven days…and after that the Montessori Preschool app costs as little as 59 dollars a year.
