Sjögren’s disease is an auto-immune disease also known as an “unseen disease.” Sjögren’s is characterized by inflammation, and may result from, or be triggered by, a dysregulation of the normal immune response. It can be difficult to diagnose, as its symptoms are similar to Rheumatoid Arthritis and other auto-immune diseases. In this episode, we are discussing Sjögren’s disease and the science behind its two cardinal symptoms, dry eyes and dry mouth. As the pandemic continues to keep its presence and remain relevant in our world, researchers are discovering more information about the progression of the COVID-19 virus and the connection to saliva’s enzyme receptors in the mouth. As most of you know, your mouth is the first line of defense against foreign bacteria, viruses, and overall infections. Saliva has one of the most difficult roles in the body. Not only does it protect the body as the first line of defense, but it also must fight off all foreign microorganisms that enter the mouth and protect the mucosa and oral tissues from trauma, burns, and lesions. Today’s focus is on the general overview of Arthritis on a spectrum and delve into the pathological process of Rheumatoid Arthritis and the impact it has on the joints in the body. We will also be discussing the stages of Periodontal disease and what bacterium in the oral cavity causes Periodontal disease.  I will be discussing the bacterium that is in the oral cavity that can destroy the bone around the teeth.  Also, the direct correlation this same bacterium has in the fluid around the joints is those suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis.
