VS - World Teachers’ Day 2021 _ 5TH Oct. 2021

VS - World Teachers’ Day 2021 _ 5TH Oct. 2021

There have been many superheroes since the pandemic hit the world. They have kept going out and about to do their work while the rest of the world was told to stay at home. Most of them are acknowledged and applauded for the work they did to keep the world going as it came to a standstill due to the lockdown.

But there is one class of people who played a big role during this pandemic to maintain a semblance of normality and they are our teacher and educational staff. Teachers in the world over, have been working harder than ever to do their job in a totally new online setting that required them to turn to new methods of teaching, adapt and overcome its challenges, and then stir student and their parents through the unfamiliar world of online classes. Teachers have kept the classes going, conducted exams, completed academic sessions, kept everyone safe when schools reopened and, most of all, helped their students cope with the pressures of the ‘new normal’

It is because of these efforts that the teachers of the world are being celebrated and recognized on World Teachers’ Day 2021, with the theme, “Teachers’ at the Heart of education recovery”.  On world Teachers’ Day the service of teachers and their contribution to education are acknowledged, and their role and importance for the development of students and society appreciated. The Day pays tributes to the teachers and tends to resolve some of the issues regarding their profession and hence tries to attract the brightest young mind towards this profession.

These will serve as the bases of our discussion on this edition of village square.

VS - World Peace Day - 21st Sept. 2021

VS - World Peace Day - 21st Sept. 2021

The International Day of Peace, sometimes officially known as World Peace Day, is a United Nations-sanctioned holiday observed annually on 21 September. It is dedicated to world peace, and specifically the absence of war and violence, such as might be occasioned by a temporary ceasefire in a combat zone for humanitarian aid access. The day was first celebrated in 1981and is kept by many nations, political groups, military groups, and people. In 2013 the day was dedicated by the Secretary-General of the United Nations to peace education, the key preventive means to reduce war sustainably.

This years theme is focused on three core areas; the protection of people, planet and wildlife.

Protection of people is simply protecting the right of everyone, regardless of age, gender, religion or ethnicity. Everyone has the right to live their lives free of fear, abuse or neglect. It is essential to protect individual's human rights and safety. Such is the responsibility of government and citizens in turn.

On the other hand, wildlife conservation refers to the practice of protecting wild species and their habitats in order to maintain healthy wildlife species or populations and to restore, protect or enhance natural ecosystems. Similarly protecting the planet is to protect the environment and preserve the planet for our children and future generations, we all need to take proactive steps toward cleaner living habits.

Jos the capital of Plateau State in central Nigeria became the scene of mass killing and destruction on September 7th, 2001. Violence suddenly erupted between Christian and Muslims in a city where diverse communities had coexisted peacefully for year's.

Today we commemorate 20 years of this dreadful event. The whole idea is look at ourselves, ask ourselves hard questions, having come this far, where do we want to go from here?

VS - Demands and Expectations for the year 2021. Part 2 _ 12th Jan 2021

The Nigerian youth have shown resilience in the effort to bring about the desired change through the #EndSARS protest. #EndSARS, End Police Brutality, 5for5, 7for7, those are perhaps the biggest hash tags for 2020, in fact the #EndSARS still pops up till this day.

Nigerian youth dished out five demands, these five demands have, however, evolved into seven demands currently trending with the hash tag #7for7.

A close examination of these demands indicates that the youth are not just about ending SARS or Police reforms alone, rather, the struggle is now for a holistic overhaul of a dysfunctional system for the common good of all.

One of the 7 seven demands is a reform in the youth affairs which calls for employment among others. According to National Bureau of statistics, as of the second quarter of 2020 the unemployment rate in Nigeria stood at a staggering 27.1% and underemployment rate at 28.6% of young people aged 15 to 34.

On this edition of the programme, as we review the events of 2020, we shall be making deliberate plans to improve existing plans, policies and practices to enhance development of the youths, and also the way forward for the year 2021.

These and many more will form the bases of our discussion today. As we plan for 2021. What are the possible solutions to this issues moving forward?

VS - Demands and Expectations for the year 2021. Part 1 _ 5th Jan 2021.mp3

The year 2020   was a very tough year for Nigeria, introducing chronic cycles of poverty,   violence, insecurity and other challenges that thwarted efforts to make huge   difference in the quality of lives of Nigerians.

Insecurity,   education, unemployment, inflation and recession, health and so on, are challenges   that have direct repercussions on our national economic stability, growth and   development.

Insecurity in   Nigeria became an almost every day conversation in 2020, specifically at the   National Assembly; there was hardly a plenary session without motions or   bills on security. On the 28th November 2020, 43 farmers were   killed by the Boko Haram sect group, 3 days later, frustrated by the   situation President Buhari was invited by the house to brief the house on the   true state of security and plans to curb it.

SDG 4: Quality   Education: States, to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and   promote lifelong learning opportunities for all, In Nigeria, though primary   education is officially free and compulsory, about 10.5 million children aged   5-14 are not in school.

On this edition   of the programme, as review the lapses and setbacks of 2020, we shall be   making deliberate plans to improve and reinforce already existing bylaw,   strategies, plans, policies and practices to enhance development and growth   in both tiers of government and the governed, and also the way forward for   the year 2021.

All these and   many more will form the bases of our discussion today. As we plan for 2021.   What are those issue(s) standing out for you? What are the possible solutions   to this issues moving forward? And what are your wishes for this year?

VS - Community Perspectives on Sexual and Gender Violence Cultures, Myths, Tradition and Orientations - 24th Nov 2020

VS - Community Perspectives on Sexual and Gender Violence Cultures, Myths, Tradition and Orientations - 24th Nov 2020

16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence with the global theme:”Orange the World” is an international campaign that takes place each year. It commences on 25 November, the international Day for the elimination of violence against women, to 10 December, indicating that women are the most pervasive breach of human right worldwide. The campaign is a multi-year effort aimed at preventing and eliminating violence against gender around the world. There is a call on governments, Civil Society, women’s organizations, young people, the private sector, the media and the entire UN system to join forces in addressing the global pandemic of violence against both genders.

Gender based violence can manifest in different forms, and it’s important that we identify what qualifies as gender-based violence. Think of it as an act of violence that is directly related to or justified by using the gender.

Gender-Based Violence can happen in the private or public sphere, in kitchens, bedrooms and streets, markets and boardrooms, or in the refugee camps. It can include street harassment, i.e. groping, whistling or unwanted attention in public spaces, marital rape and intimate partner violence. There are many forms of GBV that have been challenged as traditions in certain communities. Whether it is early marriages in certain communities, rape, trafficking of persons, sexual violence, femicide and female mutilation, honor killing as the culture may be. There is no justification for violence.
