Up Up And Away - Richard Crosbie

We aren't the first generation to walk around Dublin and not look where we are going and walk into poles and signposts. Back in 1785 The Lord Mayor passed a law to stop people gazing up in the air scanning for flying machines. This is the story of the intrepid explorer who challenged that ban and made the first flight through Irish skies - Ladies and Gentleman I give you .....Richard Crosbie.

The Original Cable Guy - Robert Halpin

The Original Cable Guy - Robert Halpin

This week's episode of Tell Tale is all about Robert Halpin from Wicklow, who was one of the most interesting and important mariners of the 19th century.

He lived an extraordinary life! Running away to sea as a young boy was just the start and he had many adventures such as the laying of a cross Atlantic Cable (that almost everyone said couldn't be laid) then losing the connection when it snapped in the middle of the Ocean, then finding it again, then losing it again (D'Oh!) and then finding it again.

On his retirement, Robert designed and built the magnificent Tinakilly House in Wicklow where he lived out his days and died after cutting his toenails.

St Patrick and Mantan Visit Wicklow

Tell-Tale is our weekly storytelling podcast that features a different character from Ireland's colourful and interesting past.

Some of our podcasts are also available as Stop Motion Animations and you can view these at www.youtube.com/telltaleanimations

This episode explores the time when Patrick arrived in Ireland and met with a less than friendly welcome on the shores of Wicklow. We learn how Mantan (aka The Toothless one) received his name and how he later gave his name to the county.

If you would like to learn the skills to make your own podcasts in class or at home please visit www.createschool.ie

This project was made possible with the support of Wicklow County Council Arts Office.
