By Infrequency
Hosted by Ewan and Nick, and featuring an ever widening range of guests, from musicians, journalists, authors, to fanatical music fans.
We aim to encourage the deep-dive rather than being gatekeepers.
We have looked at bands like the Fall, LCD Soundsystem and more, as well as genres such as Riot Grrrl and New York No Wave.
Head over to our home at infrequency.co.uk and stream some of the shows with music included.

Happy Mondays and Black Grape - 1987 - 1985
Call the cops!
We are back with an episode of Temporary Fandoms, and it's a two-parter.
I am joined by the always excellent John Tansey and Zoe Von Hess to work our way through the work of the inimitable Shaun Ryder.
We look at the first half of his career in this episode right up to the first Black Grape Album.

Math Rock, With Glen Hodgson: Movements, Scenes, and Genres
I invited guitarist for Delta Sleep, Glen Hodgson on to talk us through what is and isn't Math Rock. We got some answers for sure, but I still can never put my finger on what makes something "mathy".
I regale Glen with phrases from the early 90s like "wazzy" which just makes me feel old. We also talk about being in Delta Sleep, touring, music production, the Albini sound, and a bunch of other stuff.
We work our way from Slint, through Don Caballero, Toe, Pretend, Faraquet, up to Real Terms. We even have a track that even to me doesn't seem very "mathy"

The Left Bank Disco, Derry, 83-84, With Raymond Gorman: Movements, Scenes, and Genres
I was joined for this episode by That Petrol Emotion guitarist Raymond Gorman to take us back to Derry in the mid 80's through the lens of his DJ stints at the Left Bank Disco.
We talk about the local scene, living in Derry in the mid 80's, being a DJ with a manifesto, Almost blowing yourself up on a lighting rig, starting a band, moving to that London, and in a break from normal MSG norms, stuff about the guests actual band.
Ewan does tell a few boring anecdotes, and here's a bonus drinking game for you, every time he mentions that he is from Wolverhampton - SHOT.
Tracks include Afrika Bambaataa, Mr Bloe, The Smiths, New Order, yes, and more.
Keep an eye out for the upcoming That Petrol Emotion boxed set, which is coming out in November on Edsel Records and it's called "Every beginning has a future'

Girl Groups, With Molly Tie: Movements, Scenes, and Genres
Punktuation Mag UK editor Molly Tie joins me for a fascinating long conversation about the evolution of Girl Groups. From the Shangri-Las to Girls Aloud, via The Slits, Runaways, Bangles, Donnas, Bananarama, and more.
We discuss sexism in pop, exploitation, fashion, marketing, my inability to form cohesive sentences when it's 40 degrees, why Bananarama were way more important than I thought, and ....well, just have a listen.
You can find Molly at www.twitter.com/molly_tie and at www.punktuationmag.com/

Uncompromising Acts, With John Henderson: Movements, Scenes, and Genres
This took me a while to think up the name for this eclectic journey through the music tastes of Head Honcho at Tiny Global Productions, John Henderson. I think I got it right in the end, despite me using my bad mic by mistake (though it's OK as John does 90% of all the talking)
We take a look at artists who just do, or did, their own thing, hard to pinpoint in any specific genre, sometimes on the cusp of greatness, sometimes on the outskirts. Regardless it's a great selection of tunes from Rocksteady, to Hippy Folk, and much much more.
THERE IS NO SPOTIFY PLAYLIST THIS TIME AS IT WOULD ONLY BE HALF FULL!!!! (best listen on our site or mixcloud then)
With TUNES at www.infrequency.co.uk or www.mixcloud.com/tempfans
John runs Tiny Global Productions, who release amazing music from bands such as The Nightingales, Band of Holy Joy, Blue Orchids, David Lance Callahan, and loads more cool stuff. Find out more and support the artists at https://tinyglobalproductions.bandcamp.com/artists

I am joined by puzzle maker supreme and former contestant of the rumble, Brendan Quigley who takes us through a fascinating journey of one of the most important battle-of-the-bands in US history. Well maybe excluding that one in San Dimas which was won by Bill and Ted.

80's Pop Nuggets, With The Giddy Carousel Of Pop: Movements, Scenes, and Genres
I am joined by not one but two guests, co-hosts of the excellent Smash Hits podcast, "The Giddy Carousel Of Pop" Gavin Hogg, and Simon Galloway. As 80's pop aficionados they chose to take me through some of the 80's unsung pop belters (though I did have to question them on whether a couple of the choices were obscure at all).
There is a playlist on Spotify to the tunes we are talking about, here

PJ Harvey: 1992 - 1998
First of all, apologies for the slightly sub-par sound quality this month.
In this episode of Temporary Fandoms we look at the stunning first half of the discography of PJ Harvey. From the astounding opening Indie Rock of Dry, through to the trip-Hop infused Is This Desire? As always we take you through each album, play a few songs, and then have a ramble chat to see what's what.

Disco, with Dr Liam Maloney: Movements, Scenes, and Genres
We are joined by Doctor of Music, Liam Maloney, to talk about the rise and possible fall of Disco. We look at how Disco began in a New York loft, the Stonewall uprising, the destruction of dangerous disco records, how disco continues to this day, and no Abba, though there is some Ethel Merman, for some reason. And Liam chose some incredibly long, but cracking, tunes for us to listen to, including Idris Muhammad, Eddie Kendricks, and erm Ethel Merman!

You also get to listen to my voice disappear as I had Covid at the time of recording.
The spotify playlist has a few substitutions as there are tracks we talked about that are kinda missing. https://sptfy.com/MSGNR

Das Racist
In the final episode of Season Three we look at the short but complex, fun, witty, and memorable work of Das Racist. You might know them from the Pizza Hut and Taco Bell song but there is more to unpack.
We talk about lyrics, mixtapes, what a mixtape actually is, getting drunk on couches, midwestern basements, the amazing post-Das Racist collaborative work with Riz Ahmed "The Swet Shop Boys", and generally talk about a bunch of random things in a ramshackle way. Which kind of works for Das Racist.
Nick and Ewan are rejoined for this episode by the wonderful Brendan Quigley, and Emily Baldoni.
And you can also discover if, like Ewan, you were pronouncing their name wrong.
Contents:
Album introductions with Brendan Quigley

Bjork Part 2: 2004- 2017
First of all we had major tech-issues with this one. Hopefully it's not too distracting and we promise never to do it again.
Nick brings back his trademarked "Party Björk to Arty Björk" phrase to a much better reception. Ewan had real issues with "one of the most important pieces of music of the century". Emily loves an album no-one else did and Liam veers between love, admiration and disappointment. And we all mispronounce something at least once.
In this episode we discuss these records:
(19:41) Roundtable Chat
Medúlla (2004)
Volta (2007)
Biophillia (2011)

Bjork Part 1: 1993 - 2001
Ewan over-labours a Radiohead analogy, Liam cries under a table, Nick definitely didn't get drunk watching the football, and we are joined by friend of the Facebook Group and man who prepared by watching all of the Björk live DVDs in order...Jeffrey McDonald. Oh, and we are all slightly shocked by how long it took One Little Independent to change their name.
There was a huge tech issue in post-production and if you barely notice it then Ewan deserves a medal.
In this episode we discuss these records:
Debut (1993)
Post (1995)
Telegram (1996)
Homogenic (1997)
Vespertine (2001)
NOTE: This was originally intended to be released much earlier in the season so we may reference that, Yes we are still amateurs!!

But before we move through her "proper" solo career we dive through her origin story.
We briefly talk about her debut as an 11 year old prodigy, the three albums of Post-Punk Indie-Pop The Sugarcubes, and take a look at her oft-ignored album of Jazz classics

Richard Dawson Part 2 (with Hen Ogledd): 2017 - 2020
Well one of us said it, and it's about one of the albums in this episode. Honestly, it's that good. In fact one of us went and paid real cash money to Bandcamp after listening to it a few times. REAL CASH MONEY!!!
Nick and Ewan are again joined by singer and pod regular Zoë Von Hess and podcaster Nick Taylor (My Teenage Band) to scrutinise the latter half (thus far) of the work of Richard Dawson, and this time including his work with Hen Ogledd.
In this episode we discuss these records:
Peasant (2017)
Mogic (2018)
2020 (2019)
Free Humans (2020)
NOTE: This was originally intended to be released later in the season so we may reference that, don't worry there are more episodes to come!!!
As usual there's a Spotify playlist incorporating the podcast and selected songs which you can find at sptfy.com/tfrd2 (https://sptfy.com/tfrd2)
You can buy all the albums and more direct from Bandcamp (and you really should)
richardmichaeldawson.bandcamp.com/music (https://richardmichaeldawson.bandcamp.com/music)
The Guests:
Our guide for the records was Zoë Von Hess, who sings occasional vocals on the recent release by Blood, Wine or Honey, available here: bloodwineorhoney.com/ (https://bloodwineorhoney.com/)
Nick Taylor last joined us for Mclusky and Future of the Left, but he can usually be heard hosting the excellent My Teenage Band podcast here: www.myteenageband.com/ (https://www.myteenageband.com/)

Richard Dawson Part 1: 2004 - 2015
Nick and Ewan are joined by singer and pod regular Zoë Von Hess and podcaster Nick Taylor (My Teenage Band) to scrutinise the first four albums by Newcastle's Richard Dawson.
Can he actually play the guitar? Does it even matter? To quote Dawson himself "Why don't more people sing with their funny voices?"
In this episode we discuss these records:
Richard Dawson Sings Songs and Plays Guitar (2005) (this is not available to stream anywhere expect the YouTubes)
The Magic Bridge (2011)
The Glass Trunk (2013)
Nothing Important (2014)
And trust me, you really wanna come back for the next episode for his finest work.

Neutral Milk Hotel
Somehow we have a really long episode about a band with only two official studio albums. Although one of those albums is very very critically acclaimed. (Though not by all of us)
We've only gone and done NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL.
We discuss, Charlie Sheen vs Emilio Estevez, outsider art, Jeff Mangum and his obsession with Anne Frank, and brass instruments that sound drunk. Also Nick gets very very angry!!
Re-joining Nick and Ewan are Norway's finest stand-up comedian Aaron Troye-White, and the man who gave us the best of our Bowie impressions back in season one, Lael Wageneck.
As there are only a couple of releases, we also take a detour through some of the early EPs and unreleased stuff. And obviously we spend time on their seminal LP In the Aeroplane over the Sea
We discuss the following (some are on Spotify, some are not)

Future of the Left
We discuss under 18 gigs at Camden Crawl, seminal indie-albums, pitchfork reviews, eating cheeseburgers at a Butlins, oh and all of the albums from Future of the Left.
Re-joining Nick and Ewan are Chris Whitby , punk squatter Cheri Amour, and Nick Taylor from the rather excellent My Teenage Band podcast.

Mclusky
Just as we kicked off Season Two with something loud, we thought we would repeat the trick with South Wales' own (well apart from the lead singer) Mclusky.
If you are thinking "who?" then you probably feel exactly like Ewan did when we started all this but by next week's episode it will all become clear.
Joining Nick and Ewan are Chris Whitby who will be taking us through the albums , and pod veteran, author, radio host, musician, can i say polymath? Cheri Amour! What, that's not enough? Fine, let's also add Nick Taylor from the rather excellent My Teenage Band podcast.

ESG
So, back in the early days of Temporary Fandoms we put out a half-finished pilot looking at the output of criminally underrated band ESG. Finally, after a year of churning out episodes we are able to present a proper episode on this amazing punky dancy groovy group.
Re-joining Nick and Ewan to take us through their back catalogue are Zoë Von Hess and Chris Whitby, and new to the pod, the simply amazing Cheri Amour (who is only writing the book on the seminal ESG album Come Away with ESG for 33/3 !!!!)
We talk our way through their career, look at why they are underrated, talk about one of the most sampled tracks of all time, and discuss some...poor albums covers.
Even if you listened to the pilot there is plenty here for you to dive into.

Number Girl
OK, welcome to your new favourite band if you like Pixies, Hüsker Dü and Japanese stuff.
In this episode Ewan tries to convince Nick, returning pod favourite Chris Whitby, and pod newcomer, guitarist of Math Rockers Delta Sleep, Glenn Hodgson of the merits of Japan's Number Girl.
Despite only putting our 4 albums between 97 and 2002 the legacy of Number Girl on the Japanese Alt Rock scene cannot be overestimated. They brought melodic US-style Post Hardcore and left a legacy of guitars, innovation and … some questionable song titles.
We take a look at

We try to get to grips with what made them important, wonder why nobody outside Japan seems to know who they are and fail miserably to understand the obsession with Japanese Schoolgirl iconography.
We also call Pixies - The Pixies, get some album titles wrong and horrendously mispronounce anything Japanese. Oh, and someone's mic got unplugged halfway, see if you can spot whose...

Love: Part 1 1966 - 1968

Re-joining Nick and Ewan is pod favourite Emily Baldoni, and making their debuts are Gavin Hogg (host of the THE GIDDY CAROUSEL OF POP - Possibly the number 1 Smash Hits Pod around) and Paul Hanley (author, podcaster, drummer of Brix and the Extricated, and once upon a time ...The Fall) to share their opinions.

The Fall: Part 6 2010- 2017
It doesn't feel like it's over. We have spent weeks listening to, digesting, dissecting, and discussing over three decades of music from THE FALL. Here we step through the final years, find some praise for the later albums and deal with Mark's tragic death.
The line-up remains the same from last time, and we are joined by James Kennedy, Mike Plowman, Aaron Troye White and The Blue Orchids' Tansy McNally

The Fall: Part 5 2001- 2008
Do The Fall suffer a post millennial slump, or is it all guns blazing into the new century? Does MES revamp the line up again to ruin Nick's argument that the line up was relatively stable? How is Ewan's brain after listening to the entire discography?
The line-up changes again, and we are joined by James Kennedy, Mike Plowman, Aaron Troy White and The Blue Orchids' Tansy McNally
In this episode we work our way through the ups and downs of...

The Fall: Part 4 1995 - 2000
And we are back with the late 90s. As Cool Britannia reigned and Brit Pop peaked and died how did this impact one of music's great acts?
The line up remains the same as last time with TempFan stalwart Zoë Von Hess and newbie Joe Mitchell. Both long-time Fall fans, they both bring their unique perspectives to fandoms, toxic bandmates, pre cogs, 90's guitars and more.

The Fall: Part 3 1990 - 1994
Despite Nick constantly banging on about how The Fall have a pretty solid line up, I'm going to refer to our Fall-esque constantly revolving line up.
Back on the Pod is TempFan favourite Zoë Von Hess and joining her is newbie Joe Mitchell. Both long-time Fall fans, they both bring their perspectives to fandoms, toxic bandmates, 90's wazzy keyboards and more.

The Fall: Part 2 1983 - 1988
Nick and Ewan are re-joined by our very special guests, John Henderson of Tiny Global Productions, Fliss Kitson of The Nightingales, and pod music maestro Jonathan Fisher.
In this episode we look at the mid to late 80s, and tackle what many think of as the Fall's greatest album ( you will probably disagree)
After the last episode we started sneaking into some podcast top ten lists, so let's go to the moon!!
We had some tech issues with this pair of episodes so hopefully the slight drop in sound quality for this ep isn't too annoying.
Hopefully our new release day of Thursdays is good for you.

Can Part 1: 1968-1973
Nothing says future podcast success than a dive though the discography of a 1970s experimental German rock (ish) band.
We have a look a one of the most influential bands ever to come out of Cologne (and maybe even Germany) though one of us isn't fully convinced. But it's the internet so we have three dudes telling another dude that he is wrong.

Yo La Tengo Part 2: 2000 - 2018
Nick and Ewan are joined again by Ben Zimmer, Jesse Jarnow, and Jeffrey Lewis to talk through the work of Yo La Tengo this century.
We get side-tracked a little by Ewan getting excited about Slade.
As you know Ben is a renowned linguist and lexicographer, and big Yo La Tengo fan.
Jeffrey is, quite simply, a phenomenal musician, singer, songwriter, and comic book artist; he is also a massive Yo La Tengo fan.
Jesse? Well Jesse literally wrote the book on Yo La Tengo: Big Day Coming: Yo La Tengo and the rise of Indie Rock.
Join us for an in depth look at the second half of the career of Yo La Tengo, and see if the band re-find that loud sound from their early years.
As usual, take your time. Pause the pod, go and find the music on spotify, deezer, tidal, apple music or wherever.
