Pathway to Sports-Journey Towards Helping Underprivileged Youth

Pathway to Sports-Journey Towards Helping Underprivileged Youth

Meet Wayne Terronez

Wayne was raised by a teenage single mother in Illinois. His mother was 17 when he was born, and she dropped out of high school. Due to her limited education and job skills, he and his brother were raised on state assistance. They were in and out of three foster homes before the age of ten. Wayne knew from an early age how it felt not to afford to play sports because his family was poor. Had it not been for his aunts, uncles, and coaches paying for his registration fees and equipment, he would have been unable to play sports.  Wayne often reflects on those early memories and how he felt, and he wants to help as many youth athletes as possible not feel how he did as a child. He also has overcome being a teenage father. Wayne knew the value of education and worked full time, stayed in school, and graduated high school on time at the age of 18. He joined the United States Marines Corps right after graduating high school at the age of 18. He will retire from the United States Marine Corps as a Master Gunnery Sergeant (E-9) after more than 29 years of service in January 2022.

In the podcast, he shared that as he prepared to retire, he began to look at things he wanted to do after retirement, which led to helping the community. We discuss how his goal of helping the underprivileged led to creating Pathway to Sports and that data has shown that youth are more likely to graduate high school if they participate in sports.

Segundo Barrio Futbol Club-Helping Kids Succeed in Life through Soccer

Meet Simon Chandler

Originally from England, Simon has lived on the US/Mexico border since the early 90s. Born and raised in Marlborough, UK, he came to the United States after completing a bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Stafford University, UK. He spent about a decade working with refugees and undocumented immigrants in El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua with Annunciation House.

He is also the founder and executive director of Segundo Barrio Futbol Club. He first got involved in youth soccer as a volunteer with his son’s team. Segundo Barrio Futbol Club is a small, all-volunteer nonprofit that started in 2011. It seeks to use soccer as a tool for social change by providing opportunities for low-income youth to play the sport. Today it has several soccer programs with over 150 boys and girls ages 8 to 18.

On the podcast, we discuss:

Segundo Barrio Futbol Club’s mission is to use soccer as a tool for change.

How many of the kids struggle in school academically and need a lot of support, and they wanted to start a program to do more than just recreational soccer.

Segundo Barrio Futbol Club uses the philosophy of guided discovery to create the conditions and the structure where the kids learn to resolve problems themselves.

Friends of Organ Mountains-Desert Peak-The Role of Public Lands in Climate Change

Friends of Organ Mountains-Desert Peak-The Role of Public Lands in Climate Change

Meet  Patrick Nolan

Patrick is the Executive Director of Friends of Organ Mountains-Desert Peak.

Patrick brings thirteen years of organizing experience and six years with the American Federation of Teachers New Mexico (AFTNM).  With AFTNM, Patrick worked with school employees across the state of New Mexico as they advocated for strong public schools. Patrick’s work with the American Federation of State and County and Municipal employees took him to several western states, Alaska, Utah, Colorado, and Washington. Public lands play a pivotal role in all of these states and their economies, much as they do in New Mexico. The extensive time working in these states opened Patrick’s eyes to the benefit of protecting and advocating for Public Lands. He worked with folks tasked with protecting and maintaining public lands on state, county, and city levels. The love they had for public lands helped Patrick learn the value of public lands. His experience building coalitions across the diverse state of New Mexico will serve him well as we advocate for Public Lands.

On the podcast, we discussed:

Climate change and the role public lands play in addressing it.

Connecting the community to public lands.

Challenge of fundraising.

FETCH (Fostering Empowerment Through Canine Help)

FETCH (Fostering Empowerment Through Canine Help)

Meet Lindsey Hardman

Lindsey is the Co-Founder of FETCH (Fostering Empowerment Through Canine Help). She has always been an avid horse and dog lover, having managed multiple farms throughout her life. Still, it wasn't until she acquired a stray dog with significant "baggage" that she discovered the near-identical similarities between people and dogs who have experienced trauma. That dog, Noah, became the catalyst for her mission in life. It wasn't long before people around her started telling her to euthanize him because he was so aggressive, but she knew that he was something special without a shadow of a doubt. This proved to be true when he later saved her life on multiple occasions through pure intuition. Years later, this led her to the mission of FETCH, and her desire and passion for educating on these parallels have become a heart calling. Lindsey is a Virginia native living in Texas, where she has resided for the last eight years. Lindsey holds a B.S. in Criminal Justice.

Meet Jennifer Baptista

Jennifer is the Secretary and Co-Founder of FETCH (Fostering Empowerment Through Canine Help). She has always had a passion and love for dogs, but this grew increasingly in 2019 when Willow, a Goldendoodle,  joined the Baptista family and began training with FETCH partner Paws in Hand.  What started as obedience training and hunting training quickly turned into something more when Paws in Hand saw great potential in Willow at a young age to serve the community as a certified therapy dog. Jennifer holds B.S. in Business Administration from The University of Texas at Dallas.

On the podcast, we learned the why behind FETCH.’

-How existing is not just an option for the organization

-The goal of therapy dogs

-Dogs don’t live in the past
