Sober Nonsense
By Teresa Rodden
Our goal is to help you re-imagine your life without wasting it away with habits that keep you stuck or going in circles.
Sober Nonsense invites you to rethink what you’ve always thought and frequently taught about regularly drinking to unwind, slow down, shut down, fill the void, and stop the noise.
We believe that shifting beliefs, changing habits, and embarking on a new path can be messy, scary, and fun with the right mindset, tools, and information.

This Is Not Goodbye!
Melissa and I started this project with the idea we'll start with eleven episodes and see where we go from there. This makes number fourteen and have decided to scale back until.
Melissa doesn't just want to talk just to talk but I have so much to share with you about my journey, philosophy, what I've witnessed coaching women for more than a decade, and experiencing this wild journey of life without alcohol for almost twenty years! So, don't be surprised if I make an announcement in the coming days or weeks. ;)
This episode is two women having a conversation about coming to an agreement on how to move forward when we are at different places.
How often do we make bigger issues out of things that a simple and clean conversation can move us forward along our path? This entire project was done out of genuine interest to serve and lessen the struggle and suffering of others considering a change in their relationship with alcohol.
You don't have to adopt a limiting identity, language, or beliefs to find peace with alcohol.
Here's the deal we are making with you...

Intercept Negative Thoughts
What does intercepting negative thoughts bring up for you? "Intercepting" is a concept that Coach Teresa learned while studying the feedback loop that leads to our habitual, often called addictive patterns. Melissa leads us in this discussion and shares how Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can help you break the cycle. Both Therapist and Coach discuss their personal experiences with intercepting their negative thoughts that had been critical for each.

What more can I say? Retire the judge already. If you are tired of beating the crap out of yourself with shame and guilt, listen and savor every minute.

Sober Intentions
Sober Intentions what are they and how to use them?
First, let me remind you that being wholly sober is not a commitment to abstinence but learning to live without relying on alcohol as a shortcut to address loneliness, boredom, fear, doubt, shame, or even fun. Wholly sober is about learning to express yourself and embrace life with a clear mind, open heart, and defined intentions. This enables us to become to trust ourselves and have confidence in our choices.
Sober intentions replace the tension of I can't drink, I'm not supposed to drink, I shouldn't drink with how you wish to experience this one and only precious life of yours.
Instead of the goal of not drinking, replace it with building a desire to fill up on life while edging out the desire to drink. This takes time, INTENTION, and practice.
You can do it. I know because I have done it for almost twenty years, and Melissa shares her progress in less than a year.
Ask yourself, how long have you been shoulding and shaming yourself for drinking? This is a habit too. It will take time to stop being hyperfocused on alcohol and seeing it as the enemy.

Outgrowing Addiction and Second Acts
We discuss my particular experience with this concept, and a book called Outgrowing Addictions by Stanton Peele and Zach Rhoads.
Listen in for a fresh perspective on an age-old problem.
Punch a horse in the face - Holiday debriefing
Punch a horse in the face? If you know us, you know we would never think to cause direct harm to any living creature.
Listen in to hear how we both had our own challenges and noted moments of gratitude and cheer.
Melissa reached out, feeling the weight of shame, and I held space for her and asked her questions to help her shift her perspective. Melissa shared part of my text with her: Hey girlfriend, we don't do self-shaming....
We also pull a few cards and give some affirmation and food for thought.
Let's have some fun and partake in Sober Nonsense.

Holiday Tips and If Abstinence Is Your Focus You're Thinking Too Small
Hello, all you nonsense listeners!
You may have noticed that we pushed out our original show for 12/21/2022, Outgrowing Your Habit, to Episode 8, released on January 4, 2023.
As we were recording today's show, we couldn't help but talk about the upcoming holidays starting this weekend with Christmas and discuss ways to enjoy them with less struggle, suffering, and shame.
We talked about so much, and Melissa did an excellent job asking questions to go deeper.
A few planned points discussed:
You won't be the same person a year from now, either by design or default; it's your choice.
When your desired goal is clear, it inspires a system for success.
Be playfully curious about what could be... places to look for clues.
We both wish you a bright and beautiful holiday making memories full of love and laughter.

How And Why To Be A Perpetual Student
You can't be a student without having a teacher. We can find the best teachers in the most unlikely places, for instance, in the grocery store, during a random conversation with a stranger, watching a romcom, watching nature, or reading a horoscope. If it gives you a different perspective or insight or maybe even shifts your beliefs, it is a teacher. Always be curious, and you'll master being a student.
