What insurance do you need for water damage?

What insurance do you need for water damage?

Just a couple of inches of unwanted water in your house can cause extensive and expensive damage. Most home and renters insurance policies cover water damage—if the water comes from inside the house.

What’s the difference between water damage and flood damage?

Flood damage is caused by water from a rainstorm or a body of water that suddenly rises over a dry area and into your house.

Water damage in your house comes from pipes, water heaters, washing machines, refrigerators, and other devices that hold water.

What does “sudden and accidental” mean?

Most home policies say they cover “sudden and accidental” water damage. That means a water leak or overflow that happens suddenly, and accidentally. It’s not a leak that’s been dripping for a long time. If you notice a leak that’s caused damage, file a claim right away with your insurance company.

Are water leaks from fish tanks covered by home policies?

Not usually. Home policies cover plumbing and appliances, but not fish tanks or water tanks you use for drinking water. If you want to insure a fish tank, talk to your insurance agent or company.

Are mold and mildew covered by home policies?

Mold is covered if it’s on something that your home policy would replace. If mold is on walls, for example, your policy will pay to have that torn out and replaced.

Home policies don’t cover mold remediation, which is when a company comes into your house and finds and removes mold. If you want coverage for possible future mold remediation, talk to your insurance agent or company.

Should I make repairs if I have water damage in my house?

Make enough repairs to keep the damage from getting worse. If a window breaks or there’s a hole in your roof and water is getting in, cover the window or roof with boards or tarps. Keep your receipts too because your insurance company should reimburse you.

What other tips do you have if I get water damage?

  • Take pictures of the damage. Your company will ask for them.

  • Don’t make permanent repairs until an adjuster has seen the damage and said it’s OK.

Who should have flood insurance?

Who should have flood insurance?

As we turn the corner into spring, it’s time to think about rain showers and flooding. Most homeowners insurance policies don’t cover damage from flooding. Who should consider flood insurance? Everyone, according to FEMA. Everyone is at some risk of a flood damaging their home and property. Developers might build a neighborhood in a place where bayous or wetlands would have soaked up rainwater. And a heavy, prolonged rainstorm– like we saw with Hurricane Harvey – could stall over a city, causing flooding where it might not normally flood. Will someone tell me if I need flood insurance? Not necessarily. If you have a mortgage and you live in a flood hazard area, your lender might require you to have flood insurance. If not, it’s up to you to ask your insurance agent for flood insurance. Do I need flood insurance if I’m not in a flood hazard area? FEMA says 40% of the flood claims are for homes outside flood hazard areas. What’s the risk of not having flood insurance? The risk is the possibility a flood will damage your house and contents and you’ll have to pay for it out of pocket. One inch of rain in your home can cause about $25,000 in damage. Most homeowners insurance doesn’t pay for flood damage. Won’t FEMA help me if my home floods and I don’t have insurance? If storm damage is declared a disaster by the president, FEMA might offer financial assistance. The average disaster assistance check is about $4,000. The average flood claim is about $115,000. Disaster assistance isn’t meant to completely fix your home. How do I get flood insurance? Ask your homeowners insurance agent or company. If they don’t sell flood insurance, go to Floodsmart.gov to find a flood insurance agent. You can buy up to $250,000 in flood coverage to repair your home. Renters can also get flood insurance on their personal property. You have to wait 30 days after purchase for your flood policy to take effect. So don’t wait until a storm is on the way to shop. Tips for filing an insurance claim

Tips for filing an insurance claim

Understand the process of filing an auto or home claim to help make the experience less stressful.

When should I file a home or auto claim?

As soon as you can. You’ll want to talk to the company while the accident or incident is fresh in your mind. If you’re not sure you want to file a claim, you can still call your company and discuss your options. Ask how much your deductible is to help you decide if you should file a claim.

What is a deductible?

A deductible is the money you must pay if you file a claim. You’ll pay for car or home repairs up to your deductible, then the company pays anything over that up to your policy limits.

What should I do when I call the insurance company to file a claim?

Write down the time you called the company, who you talked to, and your adjuster’s name. Make a list of the documents or information the company asks you to gather.

What should I do right after a car accident?

  • Move your car and yourself to a safe location.

  • Take pictures of the accident scene, including your car, the other cars involved, street signs, and anything you hit, like trees or buildings.

  • Take pictures of the other driver’s insurance information, driver’s license, and license plate.

  • Get the name and phone number of any witnesses.

What should I do after my house is damaged?

  • Write down the date and time you first saw the damage. Also note what the weather was like at the time.

  • Take pictures of any damage to your house.

  • Protect your house from more damage. For example, cover broken windows or put a tarp on a roof hole. Don’t make permanent repairs until your company says it’s OK.

  • Save your receipts for temporary repairs. Your company might pay you back.

When will I get paid for my claim?

  • A company should tell you if it accepted or denied your claim within 15 days of getting all the information it needs. They can take up to 45 days if they need more time; they’ll let you know if they do.
  • After the company accepts your claim, it has five days to pay you.
  • If you have a loan on your house, the company may send the payment to your mortgage company. The mortgage company must contact you within 10 days to release the money for repairs.

Ways to save on car insurance

Ways to save on car insurance

If you need an auto insurance policy, use our tips to shop.

What are some factors that affect insurance costs?

Some factors are riskier driving, weather events, and inflation. Inflation causes auto parts and repairs to cost more.

What should I do if my auto policy price increases?

First, ask your company if they offer any discounts you’re not getting. They might have discounts if you haven’t filed any claims or if a driver on your policy is a student with good grades.

Why did my auto premium go up more than my neighbor’s?

Insurance companies consider multiple factors when they decide your premium. They include the type of car you drive, where you live, how much you drive, and your driving record. If you have a more expensive car or have been in more car accidents, for example, your rate will be higher than your neighbor’s.

Smart health insurance tips you need to know

Smart health insurance tips you need to know

Finding a new health plan can be challenging. We have tips to make it easier.

How do I get a health insurance plan?

Most people get health insurance in one of four ways:

1.     Ask your employer if they offer a health plan for employees.

2.     Ask your spouse’s employer if you can join their plan.

3.     Stay on your parent’s plan until you’re 26.

4.     Buy a plan through an insurance company, HMO, or on HealthCare.gov.

How do I choose health insurance?

Start by looking at the benefits. Those are the health care services and treatments the plan covers. If you have medical or mental health issues, you want to be sure the plan pays for those.

Also look at the cost. Ask about the premium, copay, coinsurance, and deductible. Those are the costs you’ll pay for your care.

Finally, make sure the plan lets you see your doctors and specialists. Some plans use networks of doctors, so you want to ask if your doctors are in the network.

What other tips do you have to find health insurance?

Shop around. If you went to HealthCare.gov to look for a plan last year, look again. New plans join every year, so there might be more plans. And, again, check your plans to see if you can see your doctors and if the plan covers the prescriptions you take.

How can I avoid health insurance fraud?

Watch out for these red flags:

·       An agent is pressuring or hurrying you to buy a plan.

·       An agent calls you out of the blue without you asking for a call.

·      Anyone asks for your personal information, banking information, Social Security number, Medicare number.

·      The price of the health plan is very low.

What deadlines do I need to know about?

Open enrollment is the time of the year when you can shop for a new health plan or change plans. If you want coverage to start January 1, buy a plan by December 15. If you want coverage to start February 1, buy a plan by January 15.

Cook safely and avoid kitchen fires

Cook safely and avoid kitchen fires

Kitchen fires started by cooking are the No. 1 cause of home fires. Learn more about keeping your home and your family safe from cooking fires

What’s the main cause of fires when cooking?

People leaving cooking food unattended. This can lead to frying grease igniting, cooktop flames getting out of control, or electric burners igniting potholders, towels, or paper that are close by.

How can cooking fires be prevented?

Set a timer when you start cooking something. This will remind you if you get distracted and help you remember to get food off the stove before a fire starts.

What are some safety tips for kids in the kitchen?

Keep an eye on children and don’t leave them alone in the kitchen. Set up a 3-foot zone around anything that’s cooking and keep your children or pets out of that area. The zone also prevents kids and pets from pulling the plugs on electric appliances or being near a boiling pot that might spill over.

What do you do if your microwave catches on fire?

If your microwave catches on fire, unplug it from the wall and don’t open the door until the fire is out.

What’s the most common cooking injury?

Scald injuries from hot liquids are the No. 1 injury when it comes to cooking. Be careful with hot coffee and hot liquids on the stove.

What are some other tips for home fire safety?

  • Make sure your smoke alarms are working.
  • Test smoke alarms monthly and replace them every 10 years.
  • Practice your home escape plan with your family.
  • Pick an outdoor meeting spot if you need to leave your house.
  • After you leave your house, don’t go back in. Tell firefighters if someone or a pet is still inside.

Shopping tips for homeowners insurance

Shopping tips for homeowners insurance

Shopping around is a good way to save money on your home insurance

What’s affecting home insurance prices?

Some factors include weather that has caused more damage to more homes. And the cost of materials and labor has increased in the last few years. As insurance companies spend more money on claims, they raise their rates to compensate.

How often should I shop for home insurance?

Every year is a good rule of thumb. Most policies last 12 months, so you can start shopping a couple of months before your policy is up for renewal.

You can also shop anytime throughout the year. If you’ve paid your premium in full, your company will refund any premium you’re owed.

What do I need to look for when I shop for home insurance?

You want to make sure you’re getting the same or better coverages in a new policy. If you need flood or windstorm insurance or extra coverage for jewelry, ask your agent about those.

You can also look at your deductibles. Raising your deductible is an easy way to save money. Just remember you might pay more for a claim if your deductible is high. The deductible is the part of the claim you pay.

How do I calculate how much insurance I need?

You’ll look at the cost to rebuild your house, not the market value. Your home might be worth $300,000, but it could cost $400,000 to rebuild. Rebuild costs are different around the state. Ask your agent to help you with the calculation.

How do I start shopping for homeowners insurance?

You can find agents on the internet and get a quote in a few minutes. You can also ask an independent agent to do the shopping for you. Independent agents sell for multiple companies and can give you a few different quotes.

Ask the agents you’re working with if you qualify for discounts. Companies offer different discounts that can lower your premium.

What is windstorm insurance and who needs it?

What is windstorm insurance and who needs it?

If you live along the Texas coast, wind and hail insurance (also called windstorm insurance) often isn’t part of your homeowners policy. You’ll need a separate windstorm policy.

TDI’s Coastal Outreach and Assistance Services Team program can help with windstorm insurance questions and complaints.

Where do I get windstorm insurance?

Ask if your homeowners insurance company sells windstorm insurance. That’s the easiest way. If they don’t offer it, you can ask your agent to get you a policy through the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA).

What is TWIA?

TWIA is called an “insurer of last resort” because it’s where you get insurance if a homeowners insurance company won’t sell you wind and hail coverage. The Texas Legislature created TWIA in 1971 after Hurricane Celia. Most homeowners didn’t have insurance to pay for their damages because insurance companies didn’t sell wind and hail insurance on the coast.

Do I need an inspection to get windstorm insurance?

Yes. If you have a newly built home or you're doing home repairs, you’ll need an inspection and a certificate of compliance to get a TWIA policy. The certificate (called a WPI-8) shows that your contractors followed the correct building codes.

When can I get the windstorm inspection done?

It's best to get an inspection before the construction is finished. The inspector can let your contractor know if something they’re doing doesn’t meet the code, so they can stop and correct it.

If the construction is finished, then a Texas licensed professional engineer can do the inspection and send it to TDI for a certificate of compliance. Because it’s more difficult to inspect a completed structure for building code compliance, it may cost more.

What advice do you have for consumers living along the coast?

If you have damage from previous storms, get it fixed before the next storm makes it worse. And if you have a policy through TWIA, make sure your certificate of compliance is up to date. You can use our website to find your certificate. You can also call TWIA at 800-231-5360.

Tips to filing an insurance complaint

Tips to filing an insurance complaint

The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) can help if you have a problem with your insurance agent, company, or adjuster. We resolve thousands of complaints annually. What kind of issues can TDI help with? We can help resolve issues you're having with your coverage. This could be claims and the way they're handled, cancellations or nonrenewals, discriminatory underwriting practices, and customer service issues. What types of issues can’t TDI help with? TDI can't: Help with a complaint against another person's insurance company. Make a company pay a claim unless it violates a law or the policy language. Help with complaints about doctors, auto body shops, or mortgage companies. How does the TDI complaint process work? TDI will first ask if you’ve reached out to the company, agent, or adjuster. Sometimes a conversation can clear up misunderstanding or incomplete information. Next, you’ll fill out an online form telling us about your complaint and upload any documents you think we need. This can be pictures or letters to and from the company. If we need more information, we’ll let you know. TDI will then contact the company and ask for a response to your complaint. Companies have 15 days to respond to us. When a company responds, we’ll tell you what they said or why your policy doesn’t provide a certain coverage. How long does it take to resolve a complaint? It takes 30 days on average to resolve a complaint. There are occasions when we can resolve a complaint in less time. What are the most common complaints TDI gets? The most common complaint is about the time it takes for a company to resolve a claim. It might seem like the claims process is taking too long, but companies are allowed a certain number of days to resolve claims. Another common reason for complaints is because a company denied a coverage you thought was in your policy. How can consumers avoid issues with insurance? Understand and look at the declarations page that comes with your auto or home insurance to know what your policy covers. The declarations page summarizes what’s in your policy. The policy exclusion page lists what isn’t in your policy. If you have questions, call your agent or TDI’s Help Line at 800-252-3439. What if my insurance isn't paying enough? Not sure who to call with your question or complaint? We can help.

Portable generator safety tips

Portable generator safety tips

If you’ve had a power outage in your home, you might have bought a portable generator. Here’s how to stay safe while using it.

What’s considered a portable generator?

Portable generators are intended to be used temporarily while you’re without power. They take gas, diesel, or propane. You plug an extension cord into the generator to run small appliances, fans, and phone chargers. Portable generators will not power a house.

What is the biggest danger when using a generator?

Carbon monoxide is always present with generators, even when used properly. It’s a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas. The only warning signs are headaches and fatigue, so people might not know they’re being poisoned.

How do I use a portable generator safely?

Generators should be at least 20 feet away from your house, doors, windows, and any openings, like dryer vents. Since the generator will be away from your house– never in your garage -- you can keep a canopy over it to keep it dry.

What kind of extension cord do I need for a generator?

You need a heavy-duty cord that's suitable for your generator’s amperage. Refer to your generator’s manual for more information.

Make sure your extension cord isn’t frayed or damaged in any way.

What safety tips do you have for running a generator?

  • Shut off the generator before putting fuel in it.
  • If it’s very noisy or making a lot of black smoke, there could be something wrong with it. Turn it off and get it serviced.
  • Keep kids and pets away from generators. They’re hot and combustible.

Hurricane preparedness

Hurricane preparedness

How to prepare for hurricane season

Hurricane season runs from June to November. There’s still plenty of time to prepare your family and your home for a storm

What should I do to get ready for a hurricane?

Pay attention to weather reports talking about hurricane season predictions and storm forecasts.

You can also start preparing a plan for your family. A plan should include how you’ll communicate with your family during a storm, where you’ll meet if you need to evacuate, and knowing evacuation routes. It should also include building an emergency kit to take with you if you need to leave.

What should I put in an emergency kit?

Your kit should have food and water for your family and your pets, flashlights and batteries, first aid supplies, personal hygiene products, and important documents. Texas Ready has a checklist of items you might need in your kit.

What documents should I put in my emergency kit?

You’ll want copies of the declaration pages of your home and auto insurance. This is the page with your company’s phone number and the list of your coverages. You’ll also want a copy of your health insurance card. Take pictures of these documents and have them on your phone or online.

What programs can help me after a disaster?

The Emergency Assistance Registry is a free program for Texans with limited mobility or disabilities. It lets first responders and emergency management planners know what your needs might be during an emergency so they can help. Call 211 to ask if your community participates in the registry.

The Individual State of Texas Assessment Tool (iSTAT) Damage Surveys help local officials determine how much storm damage there was in your area. They use this monetary amount to ask the state and federal government for disaster assistance.

Do I need flood insurance?

Homeowners insurance doesn’t cover flooding. You need a separate policy. Talk to your home insurance agent about getting a flood policy from the National Flood Insurance Program. If your agent doesn’t sell flood insurance, call 800-427-4661 for help.

Most flood policies have a 30-day waiting period before kicking in so don’t wait for an approaching storm before deciding to buy coverage.

Prepare for spring weather

Prepare for spring weather

Spring is typically the most dangerous time of the year when it comes to weather and thunderstorms.

What kind of storms happen in spring?

Thunderstorms, hail, and tornadoes are common in the spring. But so is rain and flooding. During the wettest month in Texas history in 2015, a flood caused massive damage throughout Wimberley in Central Texas on Memorial Day.

Are hailstorms becoming more common?

Weather experts are getting more reports of hailstorms, but it’s hard to tell if that’s because they’re more common or just more reported. Experts expect more extreme events.

What does that mean for home damage?

Experts also expect more home damage from hailstorms. Texas cities are getting bigger and denser, which means there’s potential for widespread home damage from hailstorms.

How can I protect my home from hail?

Keep your trees trimmed and remove dead trees to prevent loose limbs from damaging your home. Trim tree limbs that are hanging over your house.

How can I prepare for spring storms?

  • Have multiple ways to learn about a storm, like a weather radio, text messaging from your city or county, and a weather app on your phone.

  • Prepare a kit with three days of food, water, medicine, pet food, and batteries.

  • Put together a family communications plan that includes a meeting place if you can’t call your family.

Types of insurance fraud

Types of insurance fraud

Does insurance fraud affect me?

We all pay the costs of fraud because it drives up insurance costs.

Some estimates:

· Fraud in the U.S. steals more than $300 billion a year from all of us.

· Non-medical insurance fraud costs the average American family $400 to $700 a year in higher premiums.

Q: What are some kinds of insurance fraud, that consumers should watch for?

· Agent fraud: Insurance agents commit fraud when they sell fake policies, lie on an insurance application, or keep your premium for their personal use.

· Health care provider fraud: Doctors and hospitals commit fraud when they over-bill insurance companies for services they provided, bill for services they didn't provide, or perform unnecessary tests and procedures.

Q: Insurance fraud can take many forms. What would be some examples?

· Auto accident fraud: People commit auto accident fraud by padding their claims or filing a claim for an accident or theft that never occurred.  Another example is having an accident without insurance. Insurance is purchased after the accident and then a claim is submitted, stating the accident happened after purchasing insurance. We call these “bash and buy” schemes or policy application fraud.

· Homeowner fraud: People commit homeowner fraud when they exaggerate or pad claims or file fake claims, including burglary and arson claims.

· Mortgage fraud: Residential mortgage fraud occurs when borrowers make false or misleading statements to get mortgage loans. Mortgage fraud also includes diverting escrow funds at settlement.

Is there a way to tell if someone selling insurance is legitimate?

Yes. Anyone selling insurance in Texas must register with the state. And most vendors must be licensed.

You can check if someone is registered or licensed by calling TDI’s Help Line at 800-252-3439. It’s open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. You can also check a license status on our website.

Some of my relatives are older Texans. Are people like them more likely to be fraud victims?

Unfortunately, yes. Some older residents are more likely to answer calls from people they don’t know. We should all be wary of anyone who calls unsolicited.

Are there red flags we should look for when someone is trying to sell you insurance?

Be wary if someone tells you that you must act today, or you’ll lose the chance to get an offer.  No legitimate insurance plan has such a purchasing time pressure. Take your time while shopping. It's also a good idea to talk to your family or a financial adviser before you buy.

Be wary too if someone urges you to cash in an annuity or life insurance policy to buy a new annuity, life insurance policy, or other investment. Annuities and life insurance are generally worth more the longer you keep them. Changing to a new annuity or policy during the first three to five years can cause you to lose money.

What do I do if I suspect insurance fraud?

If you know or suspect that someone has committed insurance fraud, Texas law requires you to report it within 30 days. The law protects you from any retribution or liability for reporting fraud in good faith.

If you suspect fraud, or think you've been a victim of insurance fraud, report it to the TDI Fraud Unit. You can report fraud online or by calling our Help Line at 800-252-3439.

Report fraud involving Medicare, Medicaid, or drug or health care discount programs to the Texas Attorney General's Consumer Protection Hot Line at 800-621-0508.

Scams older adults should steer clear of

Scams older adults should steer clear of

Scammers steal about $3 billion from older adults each year through frauds and scams. Learn more about avoiding fraud and staying safe.

Why are older adults targeted by scam artists?

Older adults are generally more trusting and more likely to pick up the  phone. Identity thieves target older adults because they generally have  more financial resources and assets, which leads to good credit scores.

What should people know about social engineering?

Social engineering is the art of manipulating people to give up their confidential information, like passwords and bank account numbers. Scammers try to build trust with their victims to persuade them to give their information.

What’s a popular scam going around?

In the “grandparent scam,” someone gets the name of one of your grandchildren by looking online. They call you pretending to be your  grandchild and ask for money to fix a flat tire in Canada. They say  they’re too embarrassed to call their friends or parents. Then they ask for $500.

The signs of fraud are there: urgency and international boundaries. If you send money outside of the United States, it’s almost impossible to  get back.

What tips do you have to avoid scams?

- Hang up on callers if something doesn’t sound or feel right.
- If a caller gives you a company name, look it up online. You might  find information about the scam from other people who got calls.
- Don’t be pressured to act quickly on any offer. If someone calls, emails, or mails you an offer, decline it and look it up yourself to see if it’s true and the company is real. Health plans and annuities don’t  go on sale.
- Never give out or send your personal information, money, jewelry, or  gift cards.
- Keep your computer’s anti-virus security software up to date.
- If someone suspicious is going door-to-door trying to sell something, tell your older neighbors so they can avoid the scammer.

Looking for health insurance?

Looking for health insurance?

Can you shop around for health insurance?

Where can I get health insurance?

There are four possible options for private health insurance (if you don’t qualify for Medicare, Medicaid, or CHIP)

1. An insurance company or HealthCare.gov. Use HealthCare.gov to see if you can get a tax credit.
2. Employer: If your employer has a plan, it may pay for part of your premium.
3. Spouse’s employer: If your spouse’s employer offers a plan, you may want to compare the costs and benefits of being added to it.
4. Parent: If you’re under 26, you may be able to join your parents’ plan. You don’t have to live at home, be enrolled in school, or be a dependent, to be added to your parents’ plan.

What dates do I need to know when shopping?

Open enrollment for HealthCare.gov ends on January 15. If you want a plan that starts on January 1, then the enrollment deadline will be December 15. January 15 is the deadline to sign up for coverage that starts on February 1. If you don’t sign up by January 15, 2023, you may not be able to get coverage until 2024.

Are those the only times I can buy a plan?

There are special enrollment periods, which are times outside the annual open enrollment when you can sign up for health insurance if you’ve had certain life events, like losing a job, moving, getting married, having or adopting a child, or your income falls below a certain amount.

How do I select a health care plan?

Review the plan’s key documents, including the summary of benefits and coverage, provider list, and drug list, for the information that matters to you. If you want to read the fine print, you can also review the full policy or evidence of coverage document.

If you have a medical or mental health issue, you want to make sure the plan you buy has the benefits you need.

The same thing goes for your doctors and prescriptions. Make sure the plan will let you see your doctors and will cover your medicines.

You also want to look at the price (the monthly premium) and what you’ll have to pay when you get care (cost-sharing). There are copays, deductibles, and coinsurance.

Copays are what you pay every time you go to the doctor. The deductible is the part you must pay before the plan will start sharing the cost. After you’ve met your deductible, coinsurance is the percent of the cost of care that you will continue to pay until you meet the plan’s out-of-pocket maximum.

If a plan has a low premium, make sure it has the benefits you need at a price you can afford.

How do I shop for health insurance?

Our checklist will help you get the facts you need to pick a good health plan. Texas Department of Insurance's health plan shopping guide.

How can I spot problems with a plan or agent?

Here are a few red flags to look for when buying a plan:

· The agent or salesperson can’t answer basic questions about the plan, or give you specific plan information in writing.
· You feel pressured to decide right away. There are no limited time offers in health insurance.
· A price that is much lower than other companies you’ve checked with probably means the plan has fewer benefits and more limits.
· You get a call or email from a company or person you didn’t contact first. Be especially careful giving out your Social Security, Medicare, or credit card numbers. Never give them to anyone you didn’t call first or ask to call you.

Tips to understand Medicare open enrollment

Tips to understand Medicare open enrollment

Medicare open enrollment is the time you can change your plan each  year if you’re not happy with yours. The enrollment period runs from  October 15 to December 7. If you like your plan, you don’t have to do  anything.

Learn more about open enrollment and how to avoid common scams.

How do I know if I have the wrong Medicare plan?

If your doctor doesn’t take a specific plan or the drug coverage you get through Medicare Part D, you may want to change your plan. Or if  you’re in an HMO and have to ask your doctor for a referral to a specialist, you may want to switch to a PPO. With a PPO, you can go to a  specialist if they’re in your network.

What’s the difference between a Medicare Advantage plan and a Medigap plan?

Medicare Advantage plans bundle the benefits in Medicare Part A, Part B, and Part D, the drug plan. Medigap plans (also known as Medicare  supplement) help cover the 20% of costs you are responsible for when you’re on traditional Medicare. It’s an extra plan to help you out.

I like the Medicare plan I have. Do I need to do anything during Medicare open enrollment?

You don’t have to do anything if you’re happy with your plan. Open enrollment is just for people who aren’t satisfied with their plan.

How can I get help if I have Medicare open enrollment questions?

You can make an appointment with your local office of the Area Agency  on Aging. Call 800-252-9240 to find your local office or view the Area Agencies on Aging Directory.

What kinds of Medicare open enrollment scams should we watch out for?
  • Anyone who claims to be an official Medicare agent. Medicare doesn’t have sales representatives.
  • Phone calls or home visits from anyone trying to sell you a Medicare plan. Insurance companies and agents aren’t allowed to call you or  knock on your door to talk about Medicare unless you asked them to call  or visit.
  • Anyone telling you that you need to do something or act fast to keep your coverage. If you don’t want to change plans, you don’t need to do anything during open enrollment.
  • Anyone asking for your Medicare number, Social Security number, or bank account number over the phone.

Mental health treatment and insurance

Mental health treatment and insurance

Learn about how your health plan covers mental health treatment. And what to do if you have any issues getting help.

Does my health plan cover mental health treatment?

Most plans do. There are exceptions for plans that aren’t subject to Texas law, like large employer plans.

For plans that do offer mental health treatment, they must offer coverage that is equal to medical treatment. This is called mental health parity.

What does mental health parity mean?

It means that the treatment of mental health conditions and substance use disorders must equal the coverage you get for health issues. Equal coverage includes things like financial requirements, deductibles, copays, and coinsurance.

What kind of mental health care should my plan cover?

Your plan should cover treatment for mental illnesses, like depressive and bipolar disorders, and autism spectrum disorders and substance use disorders.

What should I do if my mental health treatment isn’t being treated the same?

First, call your health plan and ask for an appeal. You can also ask for an external review, and someone outside the health plan will decide whether the services are covered.

You can call our Help Line and we’ll walk you through the steps. You can also file a complaint with us against your health plan. The Help Line number is 800-252-3439.

Where can I go for more information?

You can call the Texas Health and Human Services Commission behavioral health ombudsman at 800-252-8154. Also visit mentalhealthtx.org.

What happens if my car is totaled?

What happens if my car is totaled?

One thing most drivers don’t want to hear after a car accident is, “Sorry, your car is totaled.” Learn what that means and what your options are.

What does “totaled” mean?

Totaled means that the cost to repair your car is more than its worth. If your car is worth  $10,000, and the cost of repairs is $12,000, the insurance company will want to pay the lower of the two.

How does the insurance company decide to total my car?

Insurance companies use computer programs and databases to estimate the cost of repairs and the value of your car.

What can I do if I think my car is worth more than the insurance company says?

If  your own insurance company is paying for repairs, you can ask them to  reconsider the value. You may need to do some research. Find out what a car like yours – the same make and year – would sell for in your area. Get written quotes from used car dealers.

You can also ask for an appraisal. You and the company each hire an appraiser to determine the value of your car. The appraisers choose a third appraiser to act as an umpire.

How does my company decide how much to pay me?

It depends on your policy. If you have a “replacement cost” policy, you  may get paid what your car is worth at today’s cost. Or, if you have an “actual cash value” policy, the money you get may be based on the age of your car.

Can I keep my totaled car?

Yes, you have the  option to keep your car. Tell your company you want to keep it and the company will take off the “salvage value” amount. That means if they can  get $3,000 for your car at an auto auction, they will lower the amount  they pay you by $3,000

Keeping college students healthy and safe

Keeping college students healthy and safe

Shopping, packing, saying goodbyes. Going off to college is a busy time. But don’t forget to build in time to talk to your college student about using their health plan and staying safe in their dorm or apartment.

Where can college students go if they get sick?

Most health plans pay for visits to urgent care clinics or virtual doctors. Call your plan or go to their website to find out which urgent care centers are nearby and in your plan’s network. Please note that an urgent care center operator that is in network in your hometown may not  be in network where your student is living.

Should I drop my college student from my auto policy if they don’t have a car with them?

Probably not. If your student comes home on weekends or holidays and wants to drive, they’ll need auto insurance. The same goes for driving a  friend’s car. You’ll want them to have insurance.

What fire safety features should a college student’s dorm or apartment have?

Look for sprinkler systems in the units and hallways. If the building has a fire alarm, ask if there is a beep or a voice telling people to evacuate. Also find out what the evacuation plan is, like the safest routes to get out and where to go.

How can college students avoid fires?
  • Don’t cook on a stove if you’re tired or distracted. You’ll be more likely to walk away or fall asleep and forget about the lit stove.
  • Don’t overload outlets and power strips.
  • Avoid using candles. Too often a nearby item can catch on fire.
  • Ask if dryer vents have been cleaned; clogged vents are a fire hazard.
  • Look at the date on the back of smoke detectors. If the  manufacturing date is older than 10 years, ask your landlord to replace  it.
Do college students need renters insurance if they live in an apartment?

Your homeowners policy will cover your student’s stuff in an apartment, but the coverage is limited. Renters insurance will offer more coverage and usually pays if your student needs to move if their  unit is damaged. The landlord’s insurance covers only the building itself, not your student’s personal property if it’s damaged by a fire or pipe burst.

Why carbon monoxide is dangerous

Why carbon monoxide is dangerous

Thousands of people are sent to the emergency room each year with symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. Learn how you can protect your family from this invisible killer.

Do I need a carbon monoxide detector in my home or camper?

Yes, everyone does. Carbon monoxide is let off by anything that burns fuel to run, like a car or appliances. Cars running in closed garages or  gas-powered appliances could put carbon monoxide into your living space.

Do only broken appliances let off carbon monoxide?

Not necessarily. As appliances get older, they might let off carbon monoxide. Get gas appliances checked for leaks each year. The inspector  will also look for damaged vents that aren’t pushing out carbon monoxide like they’re supposed to.

What are the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning?

Headache, fatigue, dizziness, and nausea. If you’ve been exposed longer, you could have blurred vision, shortness of breath, and might faint. If you’re  exposed long enough, it could kill you.

Carbon monoxide is called “the silent killer” because you can’t smell it. If you have any symptoms and feel better outside your house, don’t go back inside. You should tell everyone at your house to leave. You might have been exposed to carbon monoxide.

Where do you install carbon monoxide detectors?

On every level of your home, including upper levels and basements. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions on where on the wall or ceiling  you should install them. Instructions should also include how far detectors should be installed from gas-powered appliances.

What do I do if the carbon monoxide detector goes off?

Don’t ignore it. Get everyone out of your house and call 9-1-1. If you can’t leave your house because it’s not safe outside, open all the windows to  air out your house until help comes.

Learn what different smoke alarm sounds mean

Learn what different smoke alarm sounds mean

Just about everyone has woken up to the sounds of a smoke or a carbon monoxide alarm going off in the middle of the night. But what do those chirps and beeps mean?

We talked to the National Fire Protection Association to find out what the noises mean and how to keep your family safe.

What do all those different sounds mean?

Alarms have different sequences of beeps. A smoke alarm is a three-beep sequence. Carbon monoxide (CO) alarms have four beeps. There’s also a single chirp, which either means your battery is low, or the detector needs to be replaced.

Many newer detectors have a voice. Research shows people are more likely to wake up when they hear a voice. Even the loudest alarm may not wake up a teenager, but a voice may help.

When should I replace the battery in my smoke or CO detectors?

All alarms have a manufacture date or an expiration date on them, or you can find it online. It’s important to replace your alarms within 10 years of that date. Older alarms may last only five years. You don’t want a vintage smoke alarm.

Test the alarms each month and replace the batteries each year. Then replace the alarms themselves within 10 years.

What about people who don’t wake up easily or have hearing loss?

There are alarms for the deaf and hard of hearing with either a bed-shaker that goes under your pillow or a strobe light. They also include traditional alarms, in case that person has a visitor or people with hearing live with them.

Where should I put new alarms?

Inside and outside each bedroom or sleeping area. Some people sleep on a couch or in a recliner due to physical issues or for other reasons. Have smoke alarms anywhere people sleep, and on each level of your home.

With CO alarms, you also need one in your garage. You may have a generator there, or a vehicle that you accidentally leave running. A lot of new cars are very quiet or can turn on and off automatically. So, it’s good to have an alarm in the garage.

You should also take a portable alarm with you when you travel. A lot of hotels and vacation rentals don’t have alarms. We’ve seen some vacation disasters where entire families died due to carbon monoxide poisoning.

What do I do if a smoke or CO alarm goes off?

- Have a family escape plan.
- Practice it during the day and at night.
- Pick a meeting place. Make sure it’s not near the road if you have small children.
- If someone with mobility issues lives with you or visits, make sure they can get out of the house. They should be on the lowest floor

Lightning safety tips

Lightning safety tips

Texas had more lightning strikes than any other state in 2021. Each year in the U.S., there are about 70,000 insurance claims and $2 billion of damage from lightning.

What are my chances of getting struck by lightning?

The odds are low, but your chances go down if you’re not being safe around thunder. Your chances of getting struck in any given year are about one in 1.5 million. If you live until about 80, that number drops to one in 18,000. For every 10 people, there’s a one in 1,800 chance one of them will get struck.

How can I protect myself from lightning?

The best tip is to monitor the weather. If you’re headed outside for the day, check to see if a storm is forecast. If you get caught outside and hear thunder, get inside a building or a car with a hard top as soon as you can. Don’t take cover under a tree.

If you’re inside, stay away from water or electronics. Lightning can go into your plumbing and electric systems.

How do you help someone if they’re struck by lightning?

If someone is struck, the top concern is that they’ll go into cardiac arrest. If this happens to someone around you, call 9-1-1 and start CPR until help arrives.

How can I protect my house from lightning?

Homeowners can invest in a lightning protection system, which has three parts:

  1. Lightning rod: Intercepts the      lightning.
  2. Down conductor: Takes energy from      the lightning down the side of the building.
  3. Ground terminals or grounding rods: Takes the energy      from the down conductor and puts it deep into the ground.

If you want to install a lightning protection system, hire a professional certified by the Lightning Protection Institute.

What is a fact about lightning that people don’t know?

Lightning can strike up to 10 miles from where it’s raining. And you can hear thunder only about 10 miles from a storm. So, if you hear thunder, you’re within striking distance of lightning.

How to save money on car insurance

How to save money on car insurance

Has your car insurance gone up lately? Or maybe you’re just wondering about some ways to lower it. We talk about ways to save on car insurance.

Why are car insurance prices going up?

There are more drivers on the road going to work and school than  there have been in the last couple of years due to the pandemic. With more cars on the road, there are more accidents and more car damage that insurance companies pay for. The cost of parts to repair cars has  increased also.

How can I save money on car insurance?

Talk to your auto insurance company. Make sure they know about life  events that might lower your rate, like a child moving out and getting their own insurance. Also ask your company if there are any discounts  that you might qualify for.

What car insurance discounts are available?

A lot of companies offer a discount if you have multiple policies  with them, like a car and home policy. If you have a student on your policy, the company might offer a discount if they’ve taken a driver’s ed course or get good grades.

What do insurance companies look at when they set my premium amount?

The two biggest factors are your age and your driving history. If you  haven’t caused any accidents, you might get a lower rate. Some companies will also look at your credit history.

What should I look for when shopping around for a new policy?

Be sure you’re comparing the same coverages, coverage amounts, and deductibles. If one of those is different when you’re looking at policies from different companies, you’ll notice a big price difference.

Can I lower my car insurance deductible or drop coverage to save money?

You can, but make sure you understand what impact that will have. The  deductible is what you’ll have to pay when you file a claim. If you  have a $500 deductible and it costs $10,000 to repair your car, your  company will pay $9,500 toward the repair.

Another way people think they can lower their rates is by dropping collision and comprehensive coverage. Collision pays if you’re in an  accident or if you hit something. Comprehensive pays for damage from  something like a storm or a tree falling on your car. Ask yourself how you’d pay for the damages or pay to get a new car if you don’t have those coverages.

Home insurance tips for homebuyers

Home insurance tips for homebuyers

If you’re buying a home, it could be your biggest investment. You’ll want to make sure that it’s protected. Most people ask their insurance  company how much a home policy will cost. But there’s more to home  insurance than the price. You want to be sure you’re getting the coverage you need. Here are some of the questions you should ask when shopping for insurance:

What types of damages will this policy pay for?

Beyond the basic fire and theft, ask what other types of damages the policy  pays for. Also ask what it doesn’t pay for. One coverage you’ll want to  ask more about is water damage.

Do I need flood insurance if I don’t live in a flood zone?

You’ll want to consider flood insurance even if you don’t live on the coast or near a lake or river. Almost every major city in Texas is in an area at  risk of flooding. Home policies don’t pay for flood damage; you’ll need a separate flood policy.

How can I check a home’s insurance claims history?

Ask your insurance company or the property owner for the home’s Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange (C.L.U.E.) report. The C.L.U.E.  report shows any claims filed in the past seven years. For buyers, it shows repairs or damages, even ones you may not be able to see. Past claims could affect the premium amount on the new policy.

Does this house have any features that could lower my premium amount?

Ask your insurance company if the roof is new and if the house has an alarm system or fire sprinkler. Those features could earn discounts on your  insurance.

Should I shop around for insurance?

Yes. People shop around for other large investments. Insurance is no different. It can be complicated but you want to the have the right coverage at the right time for the right risk.

Tips to protect your pipes from winter weather

Tips to protect your pipes from winter weather

Are your water pipes ready for winter?

It’s time again to find those faucet covers and water shut-off wrenches and get those pipes ready.

What should I first do to protect my pipes?

Insulate pipes in your attic. The No. 1 place where pipes froze last winter was in the attic. You can buy pipe insulation from a home improvement store and do it yourself.

Should I drip my faucets to prevent frozen pipes?

You can run water through your indoor faucets – hot and cold -- before you go to sleep. Or you can let facets drip from the cold and hot taps. Be  sure to follow your local government’s instructions, which may limit water use.

How do I protect the pipes on the outside of my house?

You don’t want to drip outside faucets. But you should insulate them. If you don’t have a faucet cover, wrap a towel and some tape around the  faucet.

Should I turn off the water to the house?

If you can’t insulate your pipes, you might want to turn off the water. Your home’s water shut-off is probably near the street in a concrete or plastic box in the ground.

After the water is off, turn on the hoses outside and the faucets inside to drain the pipes. If the pipes freeze, at least they won’t have water in them to spill out.

If my pipes do burst, will my homeowners insurance pay for repairs?

Most insurance pays for “sudden and accidental” damage. Frozen pipes and broken appliance hoses are common examples.

Ways to help make healthy New Year’s resolutions stick

Ways to help make healthy New Year’s resolutions stick

It’s that time of year again when we set New Year’s resolutions to get healthy, eat better, and exercise more. The wellness coordinator at the Texas Department of State Health Services gives us tips for sticking to our goals.

How do you get started on your fitness goals?

Start small and work your way up. Do you want to run a mile? Start by walking. Then you can increase your endurance, which will build your confidence to keep going and do more.

How do you stay motivated to keep your resolutions?

If you’re not commuting to work, use that extra time to get moving and take a walk. Or sit on your patio to get some fresh air.

Do health plans offer wellness tips?

Your health plan might offer a health risk assessment, tools, and trackers to help with weight loss and fitness goals, or wellness coaching. Visit your plan’s website or call them to ask.

How do you keep your fitness resolutions?

Write your goals down. Having them in front of you to remind you might help. Make your goals more approachable. Do you want to lose 20 pounds? Break it down to drinking more water, eating more veggies, and exercising more. And try not to get discouraged.

Do health plans cover mental health services?

Many health plans pay for mental health services. If your health plan does, the law requires it to give the same level of benefits. For example, you should get the same number of office visits as you would for a physical illness or injury.

Call your health plan to ask about your benefits. And learn more about your right to equal benefits and mental health services at mentalhealthtx.org.

How to prepare for winter driving

How to prepare for winter driving

Many Texans experienced bad driving conditions during Winter Storm Uri in February 2021; tires spun in snow and vehicles slid through ice.

Winter weather can turn travel into a tense experience. Even knowledgeable drivers need reminders about how to commute in sloppy road conditions. The Texas Department of Transportation explains what you should do when driving through snow and ice.

What can Texans do to prepare for safe driving in winter weather?

The last thing you want to be is stranded on the road. Here are some things you can do to prepare:

  • Make sure your tires are properly inflated.
  • Check that your car’s fluids are at the right levels.
  • Check your battery.
  • Keep cat litter or sand in your vehicle in case you need to drop some around your tires to gain traction on ice.
  • Before you drive, let your vehicle warm up outside of an enclosed area.
  • If there’s ice or snow on your car, remove it.

Should people prepare differently for quick trips vs. long-distance trips?

There’s no such thing as a quick trip. Anything can happen, so you don’t want to be in a position where you’re out in your pajamas and slippers in cold weather. Make sure whenever you get in your vehicle in cold weather, you are dressed appropriately.

This means wearing layers and even having blankets in your vehicle. It’s also a good idea to have bottled water or snacks available in case you need to wait for roadside assistance.

What should people know about driving in winter weather?

Slow down. Trucks and higher sitting vehicles can also spin out of control.

Always know what your vehicle does or does not do. Is your vehicle rear wheel drive? Front wheel drive? All-wheel drive? Read your owner’s manual and know what your vehicle can do in winter weather and follow those recommendations.

How can I check road conditions before driving?

Visit DriveTexas.org to get up to date highway conditions.

How do you keep from driving drowsy?

Make sure you get plenty of sleep before a long drive. Take breaks and stretch your legs. If tired, pull over to a safe spot and get some rest. Driving drowsy is just as bad as driving drunk.

What does travel insurance cover?

What does travel insurance cover?

Taking a trip this holiday season? More people are considering travel insurance as part of their vacation planning. The US Travel Insurance Association explains what insurance covers.

Is trip insurance necessary?

Think about what you’d have to pay for if you had to cut your trip short due to an injury or illness. Could you pay for another plane ticket? Or  could you afford to be evacuated for medical reasons? If your flight is  delayed, could you book another night at a hotel? If not, consider  travel insurance.

What are some types of travel insurance?

Comprehensive plans reimburse things you already paid for, like a flight, a cruise, or a hotel deposit. Some offer non-insurance services, like a 24-hour assistance line that can help you coordinate medical care, call your family back home, or provide translation, security, or legal assistance.

Another option is “cancel for any reason” or CFAR coverage, which lets you cancel for any reason or even no reason. It costs more, but this coverage will reimburse 50% to 75% of the cost of your trip.

Do policies cover you if your plans change because of a viral outbreak?

Only  “cover for any reason” policies would cover you. Always check the terms and conditions. Sometimes things like a quarantine, loss of a job, or a  government-mandated airport shutdown would be covered, but not a pandemic itself.

Will your health insurance cover injuries or sickness when you’re away, or is there other coverage you should check out?

A comprehensive travel insurance policy can help. Keep in mind Medicare and Medicare supplements generally don’t cover expenses outside the United States.

How much is travel insurance?

It’s about 5% to 10% of your trip cost. “Cancel for any reason” coverage may cost 40% to 70% more.

What other ways can you cover losses when you travel?

Contact your airline and your hotel before you cancel a trip. They may let you change your trip without penalty or waive penalties. You could get a refund or future credits. Check with travel suppliers before you file a travel insurance claim.

Expert answers about auto insurance

Expert answers about auto insurance

TDI experts answer Texans’ top auto insurance questions.

What should auto insurance cost, and what’s the best kind to get?

To answer a question about cost, you need to know what a policy covers first. TDI’s automotive insurance guide can help, and there’s a policy comparison tool at www.opic.texas.gov. It’s important to know what you need, because a lower price may not give you enough coverage. If you live in an area with hailstorms, tornadoes, or flooding, you need more coverage than someone who doesn’t.

Why do my neighbors pay less for auto insurance than I do?

Insurance companies look at a lot of factors when they set rates: age, driving record, claims history, where you keep your car. They also look at whether the area has storms, if you park behind a locked gate, or you’re in a high-crime area. They’ll look at your credit score too. So it’s not unusual for neighbors to have different rates.

How can I lower my car insurance costs?

Start with good driving habits. Drive defensively, stay under the speed limit, don’t look at your phone. If you insure a teenager, you can get discounts for good grades or drivers ed classes. You can also save if you get home, life, and auto from the same company. And there are mileage-based insurance plans if you drive less than you did before COVID-19. Don’t be afraid to ask your insurance company for a discount.

Why do insurance rates in Texas seem higher than in other places?

Texas is unique. We have every kind of climate: coast, mountains, plains, hills. Some parts of the state are prone to flooding and hurricanes. Other parts have tornadoes and hailstorms. Some states may have one or two of those, but Texas has everything, so it costs more to insure against it all.

What’s the difference between liability and comprehensive insurance?

If the accident is your fault, liability insurance takes care of it. Every driver in Texas is required to have liability. Comprehensive and collision coverage, on the other hand, takes care of damage to your car or truck regardless of whose fault the accident was.

You might be tempted to skip comprehensive to save a few dollars, but remember, if you hit somebody at a stoplight and it’s your fault, your liability won’t pay to fix your car. So you need to do the math to see what kind of coverage you need and what you can afford.

Should I buy the insurance car rental companies try to sell me?

It depends. If you just want extra peace of mind, it might be worth it. Every policy is different, so ask your insurance agent first. You might already be covered. Keep in mind some policies will cover a rental car on a vacation, but not if you rent for a work trip or because your car is in the shop. Make sure to check your policy.

Are credit card loyalty programs real coverage?

Those are coverage options, but they’re not technically insurance. TDI can’t help you with them if there’s a problem.

Whose insurance covers accidents when I borrow a car?

If you borrow a car with permission, the owner’s policy is going to pay in an accident. You might have some coverage from your own policy, especially if you get hurt. But if you borrow a car a lot, you need to look into “non-owners” coverage, or an uninsured motorist policy that gives you personal injury protection when you’re in someone else’s car.

Should I get “gap coverage” when I buy a new car?

A new car loses value when you drive it off the lot. If you total the car, your insurance will pay you that lower value, not what you paid for the car when it was new. Gap coverage helps cover that difference.

Tips to strengthen your home

Tips to strengthen your home

Fred Malik from the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety joins us to give tips on how Texans can reduce the risk of roof and home damage in severe weather.

What is the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety?

The IBHS is about keeping people in their homes and getting them back to everyday life after a major weather.

How can Texans reduce the risk of storm damage?

Texans can reduce 50% of your losses just by getting a better-performing roof. Your roof is the thing that’s most exposed in a storm, and damage to a roof is the easiest to mitigate.

When replacing a roof or building a new home, what should a contractor know?

Attach the roof with ring shank nails (nails with ridges or grooves on them). Ring shank nails can double the strength of your roof. And they’re extremely affordable, less than $50. Attach the roof decking (the part the shingles or metal roof sits on top of) to the trusses of the rafters with ring shank nails.

Seal the roof deck to keep wind and water out of the primary roof cover. That will keep the water from getting into the house and leading to more expensive damage.

The bulk of insurance claims from natural disasters in Texas are from smaller storms (flooding, hail, etc.) and preventable damage. The roof covering products that you choose should be designed to resist the conditions you might face in your area. You don’t necessarily have to spend more money.

Focus on opening protection. If you lose a door, a window, or a garage door, all the pressure in your house gets into places where it’s not supposed to be. That can lead to major structural failures. If you don’t live on the coast, your biggest issue is your garage door. Make sure it is properly rated.

In Texas, hail is the No. 1 threat to roofs. Can impact-resistant shingles help against hail damage?

Most shingles are tested with a solid sphere of ice or a steel ball dropped on the surface. According to the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety, that’s not a realistic way to test hail damage. So they created a new test that studies the way different types of hail hit a roof and how they can damage a home.

In 2020, IBHS released the test results and the list of shingles that perform better. If they rate shingles as good or excellent, it’s going to resist most of the different types of hail. Roofers and contractors should visit https://www.ibhs.org or https://www.fortifiedhome.org to see the list of products that work best. And not all of them are the most expensive.

The IBHS doesn’t get any compensation from shingle manufacturers. They recommend the products that deliver the best no matter the cost or brand name. You can also find guidelines for hurricanes, high winds, and hail at https://www.ibhs.org and https://www.fortifiedhome.org. It’s free information for roofers, contractors, and consumers.

Buying a used car? Here’s how to avoid scams

Buying a used car? Here’s how to avoid scams

Technology is changing the way most people buy new and used cars. But  it also opened the door to a lot of new scams. We talked to the  National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) and the Better Business Bureau  (BBB) to find out how you can steer clear of the latest scams. A good  way to start is to look up the vehicle identification number (VIN),  which will tell you a lot about a used car or truck.

What is a VIN number?

It’s  a standardized code that goes with everyone’s car or truck. A VIN can  identify a vehicle’s manufacturer, body style, trim, and engine type.

How do I check a VIN?

Go to NICB’s VINCheck. You can run five free VINChecks a day.

What does a VINcheck show?

If  you want to purchase a vehicle, run a check and it will identify when  the car was built. Knowing that can help save you money when you buy a  used vehicle, especially if it’s from another state. It can also tell  you if a vehicle was stolen.

A VIN check also lets you know if a  vehicle was in an accident or if it’s a salvage vehicle. For example,  after Hurricane Katrina, a VIN could tell you if a vehicle had been  damaged by flood. And if a vehicle is damaged by flood, sensors for  airbags and bumpers can fail in an accident.

Where can I find a VIN?

A  car’s VIN is often on the lower-left corner of the dashboard. Every  document that goes with your vehicle will have your VIN number on it.  It’s on your insurance documents, your title, and your registration. The  DMV will have a copy, your insurer will have a copy, and your insurance  card will have it.

How can the Better Business Bureau help?

The BBB can share the complaints and reviews they have for websites that  sell vehicles. You can even see how that business handled complaints from customers.

What are some online car sales scams?

Scammers  are using many of the most popular online marketplaces. Often, they’ll  post a photo of a car and a description, but with an extremely low  price. Or they’ll try to rush you into buying. Often, the car doesn’t  even exist, it’s just a photo. Another trick is to use a fake  third-party escrow site that the scammer says will keep your money safe.  It won’t.

How can I avoid getting scammed when buying a car online?

Watch  for red flags. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. A  scammer will also be hard to reach and will try to avoid meeting you in  person.  To pressure you, some scammers will say they have COVID, or  they’re in the military and they’re going overseas soon. Anything to  rush you or avoid letting you see the vehicle.

What else should I look out for when buying a car online?

Make  sure to do a reverse image search on the vehicle’s photo. If you see  the same photo on several marketplaces across the country, that’s  probably not a legitimate offer. Or a scammer will ask you to pay with  gift cards or wire transfers, which can’t be easily traced. You probably  won’t get your money back if you pay that way.

What should I do if I fall for a scam?

Notify  local police, the FBI, and the Federal Trade Commission. Let them know  what happened. It will help them put a stop to the scammers. Also check  with the Better Business Bureau before you buy: https://www.bbb.org/

How to shop smart for health insurance

How to shop smart for health insurance

In this podcast, we discuss health insurance options and how to shop for coverage.

What are my options for getting health insurance?

You  might have access to a group health plan at work or from a union,  association, or church. You can also buy an individual health plan  directly from an insurance company or licensed agent. You also might be  able to get coverage from Medicare or Medicaid.

When can I buy a plan through the Affordable Care Act?

Normally  you have to enroll in late fall. But due to the pandemic, federal  officials created  special open enrollment period for everyone, which  runs through August 15, 2021.

Do you need special documentation to qualify for an ACA plan?

Normally  you have to prove that you moved, got married, had a baby, or lost a  job. But right now you don’t have to prove any of that. You can select a  plan at www.healthcare.gov.

Can you get help paying for this coverage?

Yes, if you purchase coverage through www.healthcare.gov, there are  subsidies that can help with coverage, just like in the normal  enrollment period.

If you buy a plan, when does coverage start?

You will be covered starting on the first of the month after you choose your plan and get all your paperwork done.

How do you know if you’re getting the right plan?

If  you see a certain specialist or doctor, and you don’t want to change,  you need to make sure they are in the plan you choose. If you have  certain medicines that you take, you’ll want to get a plan that covers  them.

What will my plan cost?

There’s a  wide array of costs. The premium is what you pay every month for that  plan. You also need to know how you’ll pay for the deductible, copays,  and coinsurance.

How can you avoid health insurance scams?

An  agent or company selling a plan should be able to answer questions  about it and know how it works inside and out. Look out for terms like  “limited time offer.” You shouldn’t have to rush. If you feel pressured,  look elsewhere.

See our health plan shopping guide:  https://www.tdi.texas.gov/consumer/health-insurance-shopping-guide.html.  It has a checklist that can help you decide on health coverage.

How to prepare for the 2021 hurricane season

How to prepare for the 2021 hurricane season

The 2021 hurricane season runs from June through November, but you  still have time to prepare. We talked to the National Weather Service  and the Texas Division of Emergency Management for tips on being  prepared this storm season. We’ll also talk about the dangers of carbon  monoxide poisoning after a storm.

How did the  2020 hurricane season compare to others?

Last year was one for the  record books. We had 30 named storms. That was a record. The previous  record was in 2005, when we had 28.

Are we still using the Greek alphabet to name hurricanes?

No, the National Weather Service will no  longer be using the Greek alphabet to name storms. It was too confusing.

Are storms becoming more frequent or stronger?

We've had five consecutive years with above average hurricane activity in the Atlantic  Ocean. So that’s a trend of more hurricanes and more tropical systems in  the Atlantic.

How should we be preparing for the 2021 hurricane season?

Everybody should be preparing the same way, every year, which is  more than last season. Make sure you have your evacuation kits. Know  where you’ll go if a storm is approaching.

What should be in a  family’s disaster kit?

Develop a disaster kit that has enough water and  food for your family for three days. Also throw in a flashlight,  batteries, and solar phone chargers. Then gather important documents,  like your insurance policies. And don’t forget food and supplies for  your pets.

How can we prepare our houses?

Storm proofing your house doesn’t have to be expensive. Here are a few things you can do now:

· Apply sealants to cracks in foundations and windows.

· Install check valves on your pipes.

· Point your gutter runoff away from your house.

· Find the emergency gas and water shut off valves.

Once a storm is coming your way:

· Lift your washer and dryer off the floor with a wood pallet or concrete block.

· Clean out your gutters.

· Move things off the floor and to an upper floor or to the top of a closet.

· Shut off your electricity to avoid water killing the system.

Can generators cause carbon monoxide poisoning?

Sheletta Brundidge tells  her story about losing five family members to carbon monoxide poisoning  from a gas-powered generator. When the family went to bed, they left a  generator running in the attached garage. A strong wind blew the garage  door shut while they slept. Fumes from the generator seeped into the  house and everyone inside died from carbon monoxide poisoning. There was  no carbon monoxide detector in the home.

What are warning signs of carbon monoxide poisoning?

The  early warning signs can be a headache, fatigue, and dizziness. You can  also get short of breath, blurred vision, and even faint.

Do I need a carbon monoxide detector?

It's  a good idea to have carbon monoxide detectors in any home. If you have  an attached garage or a gas water heater, gas heat, gas cooking  appliances, or even a fireplace, you need to install detectors.

After a storm: Dealing with insurance claims and avoiding repair scams

After a storm: Dealing with insurance claims and avoiding repair scams

Most people file an insurance claim after a storm or disaster damages your home. Then you have to find the right person or company to make the repairs. We have tips on the claims process, what to do if you disagree with your insurance company, and how to find a good contractor.

What do I do if a disaster damages my home?

Contact your insurance company or agent to file a claim as soon as possible. Make a list of any damage and take photos or video with your phone. And then start cleaning up. Don’t throw anything away until the insurance company tells you to do so. Save your receipts from any temporary repairs. Those expenses might become part of the insurance claim.

What if I can’t live in my home due to damages?

Your insurance policy may help pay for food or a hotel depending on your coverage. You can ask if you have additional living expenses.

What can I do if I disagree with my insurance company?

First, ask the company to reconsider the decision. If your claim is denied, you also can file a complaint with TDI. We will ask your insurance company to show that it met the terms of your policy.

What if my insurance company isn’t paying enough?

Your policy may include an appraisal process to resolve complaints. The appraisal process begins with you and the company each hiring an appraiser. The two appraisers then choose a third appraiser as the umpire. Your appraiser and the company's appraiser make their own estimates of your loss. If they are different, the umpire makes the final decision, which is binding on both you and the company. You are responsible for the expenses of the appraiser you hire and for half of the umpire's expenses. Check your policy for any deadlines to demand appraisal. If you need help finding an appraiser, search for a “property damage appraiser” or check with your contractor.

You can also hire a public insurance adjuster. That's somebody who represents you when working with the insurance company to help settle a claim. You will pay the public insurance adjuster from the amount of your insurance settlement. Payment can be up to 10% of the entire final claim.

How to find a good contractor

Try to use local contractors. And just because someone has a local address doesn't mean they're local to that area. Learn if contractors are registered with an association or industry organizations.

How to avoid contractor fraud

Make sure to get more than one bid, check references, and go online to see reviews. Don’t pay for all of the work up front. And make the final payment once the job is done. Avoid contractors who offer to waive your deductible. That’s illegal in Texas. And never sign a contract that has blank spaces on it.

Car burglaries and break-ins are increasing. Here’s how to protect your car

Car burglaries and break-ins are increasing. Here’s how to protect your car

Auto thefts and burglaries were up in Texas and across the nation  last year. We talked to Sgt. Tracy Hicks with the Houston Police  Department’s Auto Theft Crimes Task Force about how thieves pick their  targets, what they’re really after, and how you can protect your car.

Where do car break ins happen?

Sgt. Hick said popular targets for auto burglaries include parking lots at restaurants, gyms, and even convenience stores.

Criminals  have learned that people going to gyms won’t store their valuables  inside gym lockers. So criminals hang out in gym parking lots and watch  people put purses in trunk or hide wallets in cars. Then they quickly  break into the car to steal the item.

How can I hide things in my car?

The first place that crooks look in a car is the center  console, the glovebox, under the seat, seat pockets in back, and the  door panels. They check the five places where everyone hides their  stuff.

Sgt. Hicks said guns are a popular target in car  burglaries today because they have a high resell value. If you need to  leave a gun in your car or truck, Sgt. Hicks recommends getting a small  gun safe for your car.

Do thieves target certain cars?

Older  cars are targets for theft because they’re easier to break into, Sgt.  Hicks said.  Thieves steal older cars to commit other crimes.

What cars are most likely to have catalytic converter stolen?

Sgt.  Hicks said police are seeing a spike in thefts of catalytic converters.  The parts contain a few grams of precious metals, making them valuable  to resell. Thieves often target hybrid cars like the Toyota Prius  because it’s easy to remove the converter and the metals are less likely  to be corroded than in a gas engine car. If you drive a hybrid or a  Prius, you may want to consider buying a casing or converter lock to  protect your catalytic converter from theft.

Anything we can do to prevent a car from being stolen?

Lock  your doors, roll up your windows, and always take your keys with you.  Park in a garage or a well-lit area. If you have an alarm or a starter  kill system use it every time.

Does insurance cover my stolen car?

A  stolen car is most likely to be covered if you have comprehensive auto  coverage. Those policies will also cover high value parts like a  catalytic converter or an airbag.

Does insurance cover what was stolen from inside my car?

Property  stolen from your car could be covered under your home or renters  insurance. It depends upon the policy and your deductible.
