Gaslighting is the psychological manipulation of a person, usually over an extended period of time, that can cause the victim to question their own thoughts and experiences and lead to a loss of confidence and self-esteem, as well as a dependence on the perpetrator. In a medical context, that leads to further risk of the patient's well-being as well as their psychological and physical safety.

The Workplace Violence Crisis
Growing violence against healthcare workers is a crisis. A study from 2019 showed that 1 in 4 nurses reported being physically assaulted in the workplace. That number has grown across the COVID-19 pandemic. New statistics show that 2 nurses are being assaulted every hour in the workplace, and health care workers are five times more likely to be assaulted at work than in any other profession.
TNA's CEO Serena Bumpus and Director of Governmental Affairs Jack Frazee sat down with Elizabeth Clark to discuss the aftermath of the Dallas Methodist Hospital shooting and the rise of healthcare workplace violence across the country.

A note for our listeners: On Saturday, October 22, 2022, a gunman shot and killed two healthcare workers at Methodist Dallas Medical Center. Our thoughts are with the colleagues we have lost, their families and friends, their community, and their coworkers. These events are painful, and we extend our hearts to those impacted by this violence. We are working to prevent violent incidents in Texas healthcare facilities, and you will hear more about TNA’s efforts in this episode. But first, as you listen, join us in taking a moment of silence to honor our colleagues Katie Flowers and Jacqueline Pokuaa.
Leaders & Legends of Texas Nursing: Dr. Lynn Wieck
Welcome back to season two of #TexasNursesPod!
Host Chasity sits down with one of this year's honorees for the Leaders & Legends of Texas Nursing award!
“It’s a great time to be a nurse!” K. Lynn Wieck, Ph.D., RN is an author, nursing educator, former TNA President, former TNA Vice President, and former TNA Board of Directors member. She coined this catchphrase to encourage nurses during a time of uncertainty at the turn of the century. The goal was increasing optimism in the face of layoffs and Y2K fears, and later in the wake of the 9/11 attacks and the beginning of the Iraq War. Dr. Wick led TNA as president from 2000 to 2005 and was a vital part of collaborating with the American Nurses Association and other states after the attacks to be better prepared to care for Texans and other Americans in the case of another terrorist attack or natural disaster. She considers one of the greatest highlights of her career to be the outreach clinic she developed in downtown Houston called Project Capable, which provided free healthcare services to older Latina patients, taking students along with her to train and assist.
As nurses established themselves as the country’s most trusted profession, Dr. Wieck continued to turn to her mantra to encourage nurses to become TNA members, so that they could help advance the profession by having a voice in the political arena.

Meet Marisol Adewunmi, Pediatric ICU Nurse, and Jeff Watson, TNA Past President, Discussing Nurse Burnout
Episode 005: Marisol Adewunmi, pediatric ICU nurse, and Jeff Watson, TNA Past President
#NurseLife On this episode of the #NurseLife podcast, we wanted to continue our conversation regarding mental health and why it is SO important that we continue to have these conversations and offer each other support. 2020 has not been easy. To say the least. And while nurses tend to be painted as strong and heroic figures, the fact of the matter is that we are tired. This pandemic will definitely leave an impact on our profession and will require some recovery. And so that’s what we are going to focus on today. What does that recovery look like and how do we use this pandemic as an opportunity for nurses and organizations to flip the script on burnout.
Perspectives on Moral Distress and Self-Care
#NurseLife Nurses care for others. It is what calls them to nursing. But when nurses are in stressful situations, like the COVID-19 pandemic, ethical concerns can lead to moral distress and compassion fatigue. When nurses know what they need to do to care for a patient but are unable to provide the level of care needed due to supply shortages, changes in standards of care and safety concerns — nurses may face a conflict between their ethical responsibilities and the capabilities of their environment. Many nurses even report leaving the profession due to moral distress.
Hear from a panel of direct care nurses, nurse educators and hospital leaders on how moral distress presents in the workplace and how self-care can strengthen nurses in stressful situations.

We also take some time to unravel the overwhelming stigma around this topic, generational differences and their responses to mental health – and discuss why talk-therapy should be viewed as a necessity in our profession.
